Happiness quotient is proportional to our state of mind. If the mind and five senses are in sync within our control, then, we can transform disappointments into joyous abandon thereby having a state of balance. Having balance means we’ve self–control means having control over our senses and mind. This is the clear indication that we remain in joy abandon in any situation and condition by the grace of Almighty God.
Factually, today is being celebrated as the International Happiness Day, but how come, this day could be termed as the Happiness Day when the situation around the world is worsening due to deaths and destructions caused due to missiles and drones. For ‘happiness’ to be a reality we need peace internationally. And peace is not a material prosperity but mental peace which can be acquired through inner satiety and when your own life is hanging in balance then how come we can expect happiness could be got!
HAPPINESS
Happiness is the state of mind It is acquired trait Thru our self–effort Based on our behaviour pattern Along with acquiring balance By following a lifestyle Bereft of anger, greed and lust By leading belief on self With indomitable belief on Omnipotent and Omniscient.
Having unlimited desires which are not within our reach to acquire thru our sincere efforts But we want to acquire for showcasing our status in the competitive world of ours Which may lead to our downfall ultimately Keeping us away from our eternal happiness
A path of happiness Leading to our happiness Is thru following a balance in our mind Which is acquired by controlling our mind And senses Bereft of egocentric tendencies.
All these will give us satiety and peace of mind For a blissful existence With ample happiness in abundance.
Happiness could be spread By dividing it By following the path of compassion and amity For adding to our happy quotient tally.
HAPPINESS IN OUR LIFE
Happiness is state of joy, glee, delight, and finally bliss which is equivalent to nearness to God. Happiness is acquired when we have attained total contentment. A man with contentment with what he is having, feels a sort of balance in life. Having nothing or profuse hardly matters for a person who has acquired this state. It is godly. Everyone with a sound mind wants to be in this state of mental attitude. It is in fact final destination of an individual. This should be coveted mission in our life. This could be acquired by giving more credence to living a life of satiety in good or not so good days.
WORLDLY POSSESSIONS DOES NOT GIVE US ETERNAL HAPPINESS
True happiness is not acquired only through worldly possessions since having worldly possessions can give us capacity to purchase the items of our choice and enhance our status in society. But worldly possession can hardly give us holistic contentment when that possession is not attained by having power to purchase but it may or may not give us power to use or not having power to use; physically or mental state. We can purchase all the comfortable sleeping items but having no sleep will not give us the significance or usefulness of these items. Having all the eatable but no digestive power will make those tasty items of no use to us. Hence having all the worldly possessions does not give us the license to happiness. On the other hand, if that wealth is acquired through unfair means or using corrupt practices. Contrarily, it may give us momentary pleasure but eternal happiness is attained when our possessions give us total satiety after the same is used for our benefit besides giving us inner peace.
JOY AND SORRW GO HAND IN HAND
Bhagwad Gita advises us joy and sorrow go side by side since nothing is permanent in our lives. One day we have something which may please us but another day some misfortune may befall. Therefore, we have to remain ready for a change accordingly. We have to navigate our life according to the time and the environs in which we are livig. Believing that we cannot have adverse situation(s) is like believing that Sun rises in the west. Hence having eternal joy or happiness in this impermanent existence is belief found in fairy tales.
ADOPING SPIRITUL EXISTENCE CAN GIVES US CONTENTMENT AND PEACE OF MIND
When we adopt spiritual or righteous way of living, it can give us happiness. Following the path of spirituality means we transact all our duties assigned to us with focus, with sincerity and total involvement of our faculties for our evolution, under the influence of spiritual bliss. When surrounded by problems, we can stand these with steel determination having belief on Supreme Power for deliverance.
MORE THE UNFINISHED DESIRES MORE THE UNHAPPINESS
With more desires, we have the feeling of incompleteness when some of our desires do not fructified. In this state, we remain dissatisfied and having dissatisfied existence is key to many uncertain situations and conditions leading to stresses and strains in our lives thus paving the way for fleeing away from happiness. Therefore, the best course is to have less desires which could be acquired through our sincere efforts.
HAPPINESS CANNOT BE GAINED BY BORROWING MONEY
When we take money on loan in order to satisfy our current desires with maximum rate of interest, we make ourselves vulnerable to many a problem. We may not be having capacity to pay back the loan due to some uncertain circumstances befalling us. Then what? We may face unimaginable situation due to this debit trap giving fillip to our worries thus becoming away from happiness.
PEACE OF MIND IS A REQUIREMENT FOR GETTING PEACEFUL LIFE
For getting happiness in our life, we require to transact various functions in our life. For getting these functions successfully accomplished we have to work hard. For the work in hand to be fructified, we what is required is the peace of mind. This peace of mind is attained when we have balanced living; both internally and externally. It has also been found that when we work with tranquality, we can utilize our faculty optimally thus increasing the happiness quotients.
ENLIGHTENMENT THROUGH ACQUIRING KNOWLEDGE
When we acquire knowledge, we become insightful. Having knowledge means removing our ignorance. Having removed our ignorance means having power of discrimination; to distinguish between good or not so good. This gives us power to distinguish what ought to be done and what not. This gives us satisfaction and eternal peace and end result is happiness.
REMOVAL OF THREE GATES TO HEALL: ANGER, GREED AND LUST
The three negative things which we should shun from our daily lives are anger, greed and lust. When we have these, we are making ourselves more vulnerable to different vice thus spoiling our Karma. Thus, keeping ourselves away from real happiness.
But if this goal seems out of the reach of the common man, then he must at least realign his outlook. He must keep try to find his own inner anchor, his own source of happiness within. Something that does not depend upon pleasure objects or upon playing catch with the outside world.
PEACE WITHIN COULD BE ATTAINED BY HAVING FAITH
Faith in ourselves and indomitable faith in our Creator can condition our mind to follow Him in thick and thin. This way we can weather any storm and remain happy in all situations.
In sum, it could be said that if we want to lead a happy life, we should acquire balance in our life. This balance results when we have limited desires, follow righteous path, lead a spiritual oriented lifestyle, belief on ourselves and belief on God, becoming away from three vices lust, anger and greed. Then following a spotless character in any situation or condition and not get lured by any unethical tendency for gaining temporary happiness, will give us eternal peace and immense HAPPINESS in life and pave the way for our ULTIMATE MOKSHA (LIBERATION from births and deaths for good.
Our purpose in our life should be to remain happy and enjoy the Natural Beauties bestowed by our CREATOR.For this to be reality, it could be attained through inner peace and prosperity in an atmosphere of amity and not through selfish motives. I pray to Almighty God to grant us PEACE so that all live happily and with satiety in abundance.

HAPPY NAVRATRI TO ALL
It is significant to mention that Navratri is one of the most sacred festivals that the devotees celebrate. It is not merely celebrated by observing some particular rituals but we live a spiritually oriented life in all manifestations during these NINE DAYS NAVRATRI. This year it is being celebrated from 20th March onwards for nine days.
TRANSFORMATION OF LIFE AND MAKE IT PUEPOSEFUL
The purpose is to follow the way of life which puts more stress on the subjective experience of sacred dimension. We undertake those karmic deeds during Navratri which transform some of the debit-karmic-deeds to credit-karmic-deeds which helps us in our personal growth and development individually and also collectively who celebrate it with religious fervor and enthusiasm. Moral and ethical values when followed sincerely could be imbibed as permanent habits to be followed in future too thus Navratri could prove to be a life-changer for the devotees since it carries the blessings of our MOTHER DIVINE.
OBSERVATION OF FAST
A lighter refreshment consisting of milk made product, fruits, and nuts, keeps the body light and the digestive system gets improved thus there is a spread of fragrance of Satoguna and alleviation of Tamoguna and Rajoguna traits. The devotees observe strict fasts during the duration of Narratri. All these traits enhance the credibility of an individual devotee who observes the fasts and also offers sincere prayers during these days with utmost devotion. The fasts help us to purify our mind, provides lightness to our body provides us an opportunity to devotees for prayers to Goddess Durga Maa – an embodiment of SHAKTI or reservoir of energy.
FREEDOM FROM CONTAMINATED THOUGHTS AND ACTIONS
Freedom from contaminated thoughts purifies our mind. Thus observance of fast or vrat (also means resolve) continuously for nine days brings about the stability of our mind and helps in enhancement of our concentration. Besides these, we exercise maximum restraints in our thoughts and deeds and behave in a dignified manner by remaining within confines of decency. All these facilitate generation of the feeling of love and affection for others, enhances peace and calmness, a feeling of compassion for others and above all a Godly feeling.
Each day has its own significance. The same is mentioned as under:

MENTION OF NAVRATRI IN DEVI MAHATRAM; A PART OF MARKANDEY PURANA
DEVI MAHATYAM is a part of Markandeya Purana which was penned down by Sage Markandeya. It is also known as Devi Saptashati or Chandi Path. It is a Hindu religious text which tells us about the victory of Goodness (Durga) over the Demon named Mabusgasura. It has 700 verses that is why it is called as Shaptashan (Phapta means seven and Shata means hundred. This text is generally read during Navartri Celebration. Mention of Navrratri is also there in Mahabharta and Ramyana.
My special prayer to Mother Divine to bestow peace and prosperity to all and rid the humanity from the scourge of death and destruction caused due to wars in different Parts of world.
WOMAN IN A VARIETY OF ROLES AND AVTARS: AS MOTHER, WIFE, GRAND-MOTHER, DAUGHTER, DAUGHTER-IN-LAW, SISTER AND AS A FRIEND
HAPPY INTERNATIONAL WOMAN DAY (IWD) TODAY
In essence, today is being observed as the International Woman Day, therefpre, following needs to be mentioned for reminding us about the prominent roles played by women in various sphere of activities and changed the very thinking about feminine virtues. Lets affirm our commitment for equitable/balanced development in the field of socio-economic, cultural and ensuring equality between all genders.
In Bhagwad Gita, there is mention regarding feminine virtues like fame, fortune and speech as Divine Energies. It is emphasized that women has the potential to excel and attain supreme destination by taking refuge in Lord Krishnna through Bhakti Marg (Devotional Path) which is accessible to all. They are equal to men and even more proficient, Bhagwad Gita stresses about equality in characteristics which outshines them. Krishna says that he is present in all beings and does not differentiate on any pretext. Meaning she is not weaker when comparison is made. The traits of persistence, tolerance and resistance which a woman possesses are second to none.
In great Epic Ramayana, by Sant Valmiki, Sita, Kaikeyi, Mandodari amonst others are mentioned to be strong, influential, and have showcased their will power and resole despite societal constraints.
In Bible, it has been mentioned that women has played significant roles and demonstrated immense faith. Leadership and courage in challenging male domination. For example, Deborah (Judge), Esther (Queen), and Mary (Motherr of Jesus) played respective influential roles.
The women in their various functions are second to none. I am of the firm opinion that without a woman’s pro-active role, this world of ours would NOT have been what it is right now – progressive and forward looking. Her various roles as mother, grandmother, wife, sister, daughter, friend besides handling miscellaneous responsibilities are unique in nature and our appreciation for these roles need mention.
MULTI DIMENTIONAL ROLES OF A WOMAN
Women is only one of its kind of our creation By our most benevolent Creator Without whom we cannot fathom existence of our own For she is the reservoir of energy (Shakti) with huge difference.. Her day starts in the early hours in the daybreak Waking herself, preparing herself for home chore And for the day’s drudgery in the right earnest Prepares milk or feed for the tiny tots Followed by morning tea or breakfast for the relatives entire Though this over, there are many a turns and twists in her life Yet her work has just not been over still Thence preparation for going to workplace starts Since she has to add-on the kitty To financially support the family To meet the needs of the members to make up for inflationary pressures She rises to the occasion without much ado about herself She does not shirk from any responsibility assigned as a responsible member Goes an extra-mile To contribute her mite Stand in good stead in whatever way she is expected For meeting the myriad of needs of shelter, schooling et al, So that their present of members is better than days gone by This is the reason why we call her the homemaker. She is now capable to run an office with flair Her new normal is just enormous – just unbounded Including taking control of flying fighter planes In this process she faces challenges Both at home front and at the workplace With unbroken composure With insightfulness and with tact at her command She excels in many a ways in comparison to her men counterparts Moves files including sensitive ones and what it takes Moves on the ladder of career devoid of any crutches Catches on the trend in the market and at workplaces. She gets used to everything with ease At workplaces or in the cockpit of a plane with ease She plainly is in the best of her elements Even those who used to call her weaker gender Are constrained to have a second opinion now about her, Her mindset has gone a sea change But her tenacity and courage in all situations and conditions are above par. And in their own home and hearth The best creation of our Creator Excels in every way and proves Equal to the occasion at every front she is expected at all times Confronting the animal of complexity with ease in all fields. My warm salutation to thee for keeping alive our races But also race hard to win the battles at home and out of offices. It is due to the women That we’re here on this beautiful earth The various relations – so varied Such as a lovable daughter The one who looks after us when we need assistance In the son’s absence Gone somewhere to pursue his ambitions Sister, who reminds us that we can bank on her when we need assistance Daughter-in-law, continues our family and its traditions Wife, who comes from other family dissimilar in cultural mores and traditions but imbibes everything of the adopted household Nurses everybody Becomes home-maker Takes responsibility of the children and elder members alike Mother, mothers us from the birth to different stages of our life without any demand whatsoever Mother-in-law, gives us motherly love You just introspect and see How much women mean to us Without them what we have been Nay, our existence will not be here On this beautiful earth For writing these lines Now, finally our MOTHER DIVINE Who created everything and everybody Including the Gods Without Her this world and universe Without Her this creation would not have been there at all My warm salutation to her for proving her mettle at all times and in all situations.
WARM REGARDS TO THE VENERABLE WOMEN.
MOTHER
I feel sorry for those who have never known the love of a mother, because by missing this ultimate love, such people may not be able to know the true meaning of love at all. It is also a fact that every mother is a greatest gift of Divine. She is the symbol of indomitable and unconditioned love, affection, adoration, care, a symbol of suffering for others, a symbol of sacrifice, a symbol of selfless service, a symbol of hope for the entire family, a symbol of endurance for others without self-care besides taking responsibility without caring for self as an human being.
Those who are fortunate to experience the love of a mother know what this sacred relationship means. I was hugely influence by my mother since I lost my father (A 1st World War veteran) when I was studying 8th standard. As an ex-soldier, he led an active life connected with social service etc. As far as my mother is concerned, she gave me everything which I possess today i.e. value system, my courage of conviction, attitude towards others, way of conducting myself, how to suffer lonely, how best to live with poise and balance even in hard times besides how best to adjust in the joint family. She taught that if we care for present time, the future will be well care for us and what has happened in the past should give us experiences. If the experience is good, we should continue following the same and if bad then we should forget it as a bad dream and clear our head altogether. Although she was not that much literate but she was having all the wisdom of a most endearing and caring mother. Her hand on my head ensured that I shall march ahead in my life. Ultimately, at the ripe age of 95+ I lost her.
WIFE OR SPOUSE OR COMPANION
It has been observed that marriage as an institution becomes a smooth journey when both the spouses act for overall welfare of the family. Before the marriage, a girl in her father’s home is adored immensely. She learns values system, becomes adept in cooking, and other miscellaneous skills such as stitching and keeping the household neat and clean besides taking care of the elders and children in the family. She gets proper education at her parents’ home and when she reaches the marriageable age, a suitable partner is chosen. It has been rightly said that behind every successful man there is a woman who assists the family as a well-knit unit. She not only assists in miscellaneous/assorted tasks but also ensures that functions of family run smoothly. As a wife or consort, she assists her spouse to bestow unconditional physical and emotional love. Whenever there is hard times, she not only assists her husband in maintaining her husband home but many a times takes up some profession for supplementing the income of the household besides keeping the dignity and honour of the household. She not only respects her husband and remains true to him but also other members of the family to fructify the needs of the family. Her opinion is both acknowledged and respected by all in the family along with take care of the household duties. She acts responsibly, acts with patience and at times have to face opposition but she takes everything in her stride. She is the architect of household who procreates for the family and keeps the civilization ticking. She educates her children and teaches them the value system to her children since as a mother she is the first Guru of a child.
My wife has performed all the important functions for my family. She assisted me in every situation. I know when I was financially stringent, while my children were studying, she pro-actively assisted me how best to make adjustment in ups and downs of life. It may be provision of right education to our children or construction of a habitable home, finding suitable for my progenies besides career selection for them. There will not be any exaggeration in mentioning here that presently I am satisfied with what I am, it is solely due to my wife, my companion for life. I respect her immensely. May God bestow her strength and fortitude to assist my family tide over the harder situation with aplomb with the grace of Almighty God.
SISTER
Although I have got no real sister, yet, I know what a relationship as a sister connotes. A sister is the one who grows with you, takes care of you even while gorwing with you. If she is elder sister, she looks after you with care and caution and not let the absence of mother bother you since knows how best to look after the family. In the festivals; she is most sought after. She shows her skill in cooking the best dishes not only for the entire family but also for the guests who visit the household. She conducts herself with smile with everybody while serving the entire family and guests. While during festivals like RAKSHABANDAN, she ties Rakhi to her brothers and the brothers give firm promise of her safety and security in front of Divine Mother (The embodiment of Shakti). On the BHAIDOOJ, she applies sacred vermillion and flower on the forehead of her brother (s and prays for the well-being of her brothers.. She is considered the light of the family besides she spreads love and light in the family including a message that without sisters a house cannot be termed as a home. Thus, sisters are the embodiment of tolerance, persistence and when she leaves home after her marriage, the entire family misses her hugely.
DAUGHTER
Our daughters are the light of our homes. Without our daughters, our homes are considered incomplete. I do enjoy the company of my two daughters. While they were small, we looked after them, brought them up in the good surroundings, after their school and college studies thereafter proper professional training they got employment. Now despite being married off and having their own homes to take care, both of them look after me and my wife in the absence of my son who has married and is presently in abroad pursuing a profession. Fortunately, their homes are not that far – in fact walking distance from my home. While I go to attend my office, my daughters after their morning chores, performing other tasks including sending their children to schools pay a visit to my home routinely and take care of my wife. If and when there is any requirement of medi-care or to purchase any groceries, they help both of us. Even they help us choosing our clothes! Both I and my wife enjoy their company to the maximum. What our lives would have been without my daughters. They are the gifts of my dear Bhagwan Ji.
The espoused cause of Government of India BETI BACHAO BETI PADAO is on the dot so that the girl child is cared, protected and provided right type of education because when we teach a girl, it means we are teaching an entire family as a unit because she assists the family she is married in educating her children and others.
DAUGHTER-IN-LAW
This relationship is one of the most important one since if a daughter or sister is married off to another family, another girl from other family has to be brought in the family fold. I should say, she her relationship for me is just like a daughter being the father-in-law for her and a wife of the son who is brought up and contributes for strengthening the bond in the family. Her contribution for the family is not less than a daughter and a sister who are married off to other family. For her, it is a great thing since she is brought up in a different atmosphere of a family and has to adjust and be adaptive to change in the new setting of another family. My salutation to her since it is not an easy task to assimilate in another environs after being married.
GRAND MOTHER
I was very small child, may be about 5 years, when my grand-mother died. She too died of old-age. I remember her as a tough woman with poise and composure; with her voice full of charm which always attracted children towards her. She remained busy with household chores even in her old-age. One day when sleeping, she did not get up. I tried waking her but in vain. She had given maximum to the family and kept the honour and dignity of the family as a close knit unit.
While, we have ups and downs in life, it is relevant to mention the Bhagwad Gita that we should celebrate life, forgetting our worries and live joyously despite hurdles; with a detached mindset.
Lord Krishna teaches detachment: While one gives up all his material desires meant for the satisfaction of the senses, one who lives freeing from desires and gives up his false ego attains the state of peace and calm.
Holi is a Basanta Utsav or Spring Festival – it is a festival of colour (Rangwali Holi) or a celebration with happy emotions mixed with love. It is celebrated in India, Nepal and other parts of the world where Indians are settled. It is also associated with arrival of pleasant Spring Season. On the occasion of this festival people forget their differences and connect with their long–forgotten friends and relatives.
The first day before Holi is Holika Dahan (Burning of Holika Demon) it is also called Chhoti Holi. This year, it would be held on 2nd March 2026. As on 3rd March 2026, there is Lunar Eclipse (Starting at 3:20 PM onwards), therefore, the Holi would be celebrated on 4th March 2026.
In essence, we face multiple problems in our lives while aspiring for material and sensual objects, people become attached to these. Such attachments develop lust and lust generate anger and other baser traits. Anger leads to delusion and delusion leads to mental disorientation. When the mind is bewildered, wisdom is the victim. Loss of wisdom leads to downfall of an individual. In such a scenario, a healthy diversion is a must. Different festivals give us occasion to celebrate with our relatives and friends. We celebrate Holi with our nears and dears. The colourful festival HOLI presents our golden opportunity to share our joys with others. The gifts are exchanged in the form of homemade sweets, such as Gujia etc.
The festival of colour HOLI finds its mention in Vedas and Puranas (Narad Purana and Bhavishya Purana). There is a practical Archeological proof through excavation of stone, related to 300 BC on which there is an inscription of word ‘Holikotsav’ which means Holi. Even in the ancient paintings, there is a mention of Holi festival – the festival of colour.
Holi is a cultural festival which has its own significance in the lives of general masses. It is a festival of colour which imbues us in different colour. Its cultural mention is made in Puranas. Poet Kalidasa, in 4th century poet and a thinker, under the rule of Chandragupta II also mentions about the importance of Holi in his literature. Holi festival has an ancient origin and celebrates the triumph of ‘good’ over ‘evil’. The colourful festival bridges the social breach and renews sweet relationships with each other.
SIGNIFICANCE OF FESTIVAL
Holi festival signifies the victory of good over evil. It also signifies the end of winter and arrival of pleasant spring. It is a festival when people forget their differences and thus mend their ruptured relationships. On this day, people hug and wish each other well with fond wish: ‘Happy Holi’ and may the colour of HOLI imbue us in God’s impossible to remove colour so as to spread the feelings of brotherliness and fellow feelings amongst each other without consideration to caste, creed, colour, region etc.
IMPORTANCE OF HOLI IN MATHURA (THE BIRTHPLACE OF LORD KRISHNA)
Holi has special significance in Braj i.e. in Mathura and Vrindaban region, the birthplace of Lord Krishna. Women-folks playfully hit their men-folks with sticks. This act of theirs is called lath maar the holi (A holi which is played with sticks). Here men are constrained to save themselves from their blows with the help of a shield. There is an air of festivities around in the entire Braj region during this festival spanning for days together. It is a spectacle in the real sense of the term.
SYMBOLIC LEGENDS
TRADITIONAL HOLI DAHAN
There is a symbolic legend attached to this. There was a demon king named Hiranyakashap. This demon king did hard penance due to which he got a boon that no human could kill him at daytime or at night time. This made him very haughty and egotistical besides excessively arrogant. So much so was he drunk with pride that he passed an order that henceforth nobody would pray God in his kingdom. People should rather pray him in place of God
He ruled his subjects with the iron hand. Not even the hermits or sadhus were spared. Those who disobeyed his orders were meted out huge punishments or handed out the death penalty. He had a son by the name of Prahlada. He used to worship Lord Vishnu. The demon king felt slighted and very furious when he found that his own son was disobeying his orders hence he gave him an alternative – either he should worship him or face the death penalty after giving various severe punishments which did not deter Prahladha from worshipping Lord Vishnu.
Then Holika the Hiranyakashap’s sister, evil in her intentions offered herself to sit in the bonfire (pyre) with Prahladha; knowing fully well that she would not be harmed because of her special cloak which made her immune to fire. Subsequently, the two entered the roaring fire. Hiranyakashap felt assured that no harm would result to his sister because of protection but his son would meet his end
After the fire subsided, all felt including Hiranyakashap surprised that Holika got perished in the fire that engulfed her despite her protective cloak but due to the protection and grace of Lord Vishnu, he survived!
Holi was driven from the name Holika. Holika represents/personifies evil and its burning is the end of evil. Pradhan personifies goodness.
One day before Holi, especially after sunset, the pyre is lit, called as Holika Dahan. The ritual symbolises the victory of good over evil. People gather around the fire, sing and dance at the beats of drums. It may have different names in different part of the country but the spirit of the festival is the same – a colourful one.
Holi Dahan also signifies burning of our excessive desires. It is for bringing about a balance in our desires by putting an end to our greed and base internal yearning (Kaama Dahan) – our conquest over our evil or carnal instincts which have made residency in our mind and rely more on detachment from our action.
VICTORY OF GOOD OVER EVIL
Subsequently, in the daytime, people celebrate this as a sign of victory of good over evil by sprinkling either the coloured water or dry colour (Gulal) of various colour. A real rainbow of colour! In the evening, people, after proper wash, go to their friends and relatives and partake sweets prepared at their homes.
PEOPLE FORGET THEIR DIFFERENCES AND CELEBRATE THIS COLOUR FESTIVAL
It has also been seen that on Holi festival, people forget and forgive their old enmity and animosity and establish the new relationship with each other. It has been seen that people from all religions participate in this festival. It looks as though all have been imbued and coloured with happiness and goodwill for each other. If such an idea fructifies then there would not be any ill-will for anybody in the society in general.
RADHA AND KRISHNA LEGEND
Holi festival is celebrated as Rang Panchami as a commemoration of divine love of Radha for Krishna. As a child, Krishna developed his dark skin because Putana’s (she demon) poisonous milk he had sucked. He was concerned about his colour and was skeptical whether fair skinned Radha would like his dark colour. His mother suggests him to tell Radha to colour him in any colour she wanted. This was actually done thus they developed inseparable friendship between the two. People of Indian origin too celebrate Holi with gusto in foreign countries too.
KAMADEVA AND RATI LEGEND
Holi is also linked to Shiv-Shakti concept of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. In order to bring back Shiva from his deep meditation for quite a long time, Goddess Parvati takes the help of Kamadeva (The God of love) who shoots an arrow of love at Shiva while he was in deep meditation on Vasant Panchami. Shiva opened his third eye and burnt Kamadeva to ashes. This disappointed both Rati (The Kamadevi) and Goddess Parvati. Thereafter, Rati worshiped Lord Shiva for 40 days after which Lord Shiva forgave him and brought back the God of Love to life after which there was rejoicing in the form of Holi after 40 days.
TRADITIONAL/CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE
Holi too has cultural significance. After the end of cold season and start of the pleasant spring season with blooming of the flowers people enjoy the natural beauties. This also develop a feeling of forgive and forget acrimony and ill-will and establish new relationship, Holi serves a meeting ground for establishing good relationship. They also exchange sweets made at their homes.
Lessons learned from the FESTIVAL OF COLOUR – HOLI
As all community activities participate in this festival, they cement their relationships, thus enhance their sense of correlation and cooperation for better compatibility.
People forget their inherent differences and go to each others’ homes with colours and sweets thus a spirit of forgetting and forgiving are created.
One day before actual festival, HOLIKA DAHAN (Burning of symbolic Holika – the sister of Demon King Haranakyshapa) – which is synonymous with burning of evil from our midst. Therefore, this festival helps us burn the evil existing in us and establish the kingdom of goodness in our heart.

When body, mind, and soul are colored together In the hue of our eternal Creator Then a warm emotion of love is created With a flood of warm feelings Of togetherness in all beings Where there is no difference based on any discrimination Like age, sex, colour, caste or religions Everything loses its relevance What actually remains Are the likings they’ve for each other Mixed with warm emotions With variety of colors Whosoever meets us on the street corners Corners us with colors Reddish, yellowish or bluish in tint Charming us to a maximum extent Mesmerizing us with color’s touch Having deep meaning If we care to fathom its importance really These colours can transform hostility Between neighbours with a drop of colour. O Almighty God of ours Imbue us with Thy indelible Colour Thy colour touches our heart’s chords Including every atom of our body Made of five elements which die (Ether, earth, water, air & fire) On the death of our mortal body Only Thy colour and our Soul last Manmade colours just fade away and are lost After a few hours have elapsed.
Legend has it that a mighty and conceited Demon King Hiranyakashyap prided his prowess the most He wanted his subjects to worship him in place of God above Virtuous Prahlada, his own son agreed not Being a staunch devotee of Lord of Evolution – Lord Vishnu The King wanted his son to be put to sword – very soon For not obeying his dictates Different methods were used to kill but in vain. Hiranyakashyapa had a sister named Holika Blessed with a boon of not being burnt by blazing fire Both were made to enter a bonfire at full fury Thinking fire will harm her not due to boon to her But just opposite happened Prahlad came unscathed with grace of Lord Vishnu Whilst Holika met her end most tragic. Legend too has it that Lord Krishna played holi with his beloved Gopis To shower love and affection with the shower of colors Holi celebrated is at Vrindavan, Mathura And Bursana is so matchless even today Showing the thread of that time remains in fact intact People light a bonfire on the night before Holi Day With devout heart brimming with bliss Celebrate triumph of good over evil And also remember how devotion to Lord, gets rewarded.
A spirit of Spring Festival springs just naturally Scattering joy and hope everywhere we venture to see Nature too is in its finest attire – so colorful When Mother Nature is at its best All around greenery prevailing Along with fragrance of blooming flowers With full Moon as though it is chipping in, too To enhance the charm of colors which overwhelms To share the fun and joy of the people around. Different people celebrate Holi with different style But the common thread of celebration remains alike, People prepare special sweets to welcome their dear folks Shopkeepers & women are busiest lots Bestowing magnetism to their living places Bonhomie pervades wheresoever our eyes could survey Abuzz with activity mixed with the rainbow of colors Scenes at the marketplaces are indeed mesmeric.
People play with variety of colours Intoxicated with joy of the day Pour coloured water to each other Songs, dance, and beats on the drums abound everywhere People exchange greetings and pray to God for His bounties. O God, let the humans not shower bullets at each other Spilling blood of the unfortunates in the process Which may distance us from one another But rather with a blood-red colour of HOLI Spreading feelings of brotherhood Which may engender love for each other Along with amity and well-being, in humanity as a whole Our prayers to Thee O Lord – the Love One Do colour us all in Thy Holy colour So that peace and harmony spread amongst all Let this be the message of this Holy Holi.
My sincere prayers to our OMNIPOTENT GOD to rid this world off differences based on religion, colour, region, language etc. and celebrate life as a precious gift of ALMIGHTY GOD. Let’s all imbue ourselves in the colour of indelible colour of God, creating PEACE & PROSPERITY rather than biases.
In Bhagwad Gita, Lord Krishna advises the best Dhayshdhari Arjuna to follow his dharma; to fight as Kshatriya. This should be done without any attachment to the fruits of actions. In fact following our dharma is sacrosanct with inner potentials which we have to draw out for our forward march. Those who follow Dharma in different manifestations, like following political dharma, personal dharma in right spirits are the flag bearers of truth.
ESSENCE OF DHARMA IS DISSEMINATION OF VALUE SYSTEM
In Vedanta, Dharma is understood to be the science of values and also unfolding of human essence or truth for the benefit of self and others around us. It has been observed that in today’s world, value system is not given much significance that is our children are not taught the traditional mode of behaviour along with how best to adjust with the society in which we are living. These values have to be imparted by the parents but the parents are busy in their respective professions and have little or no time to infuse positive influence on their progeny. This is the reason the children today have no connection with the values requisites.
DHARMA OF LOOKING AFTER THE PARENTS AT THEIR OLDAGE
It is the Dharma of the grown ups to look after their parents when they grow old and infirm. Although, they may have financial backing such as social security or some saving, yet, somebody has to take care of them for meeting their needs in their oldage. This need is felt immensely when a single parent is left (Male or female). The one who is left behind requires somebody to look after them and not left at the mercy of elements! We must have known the cases of some parents being left alone while the children leave to live comforts of their own lives. This is the travesty of oldage problems felt while their children fail to shoulder Dharma of caring for their parents when there is a dire need; for medicare care or fulfilment of their requirements. Seemingly, the progenies do not remember the care and protection rendered by their parents from their birth till they attained a good position and status in their lives. Hence, the old people should be looked after by their grown up children, with a realization that they will also one day meet the same fate when they stage of oldage. They should keep in mind that leaving their love ones in the lurch is Kukarmic Deed and a huge slur.
DHARMA & KARMA ARE INTEGRAL PART OF OUR LIFE
Our Dharma starts with the origin of a thought. Then such a thought creates conditions for performing our function or action or Karma. If the thought is negative in orientation, then, its result would be bad for the individual or the community in which the individual is living. Therefore, Karma, in essence, is significant for following Dharma. Following Dharma through righteous Karma shapes our personality as holistic and makes us enlightened individual and we are able to spread the light and love generated by knowledge through righteous Karmic Deed to others too, whenever there is a need. Therefore, need is to acquire knowledge to remove the darkness from our midst. A person who is knowledgeable, influences others positively. In other words, a knowable person is just light a wick in the dark room which spreads light to the nook and corner of the room. All this happens with right thought and action thereof.
MEANING OF DHARMA
Dharma means following a certain code of conduct or way of living with special principles involved which are to be followed individually and collectively. These may be devised by legislation or social norms followed by all since ages in family together by communities and countries. These rules could also be followed universally which could be termed as Law of the Universe.
Dharma is also following an eco-system which is progressive in nature, acceptable by all in thoughts, actions or deeds. Our actions should engender spiritual maturity and creativity in our daily thoughts and Karmic actions thereof while performing the multifarious duties.
The thoughts and actions should make us evolved with the passage of time. Also, these Karmic deeds should create realization as to what is the function of each one of us on this beautiful planet. Besides, realization should dawn on us as to what function is ethically righteous and what is not.
DHARMA IS UNIVERSAL IN NATUREE
Dharma being universal in nature, also takes into cognizance social and religious rules for the fulfilment of the purpose of life on this earth. Individually, my dharma is to think and act in a manner which could help me perform my duty reasonably, rationally and religiously while following the code of conduct followed by the society and also the family as a tradition. As we have to live in the society, therefore, we have to follow norms/rules. But whatever duties we perform, we should perform with a missionary zeal and enthusiasm without losing ourselves in the bargain since we cannot perform all the functions individually, or collectively we’ve to rely on the other members of society.
FAITH & BELIEF IS A MUST
Factually, we may follow any belief or faith that we believe to be spiritually beneficial for us but one thing should be kept in mind is that while following the belief system, it is imperative that we should not create hurdles in the path of others following other paths.
DHARMA IS BASED ON FREEWILL, EQUALITY, AND ENOUGH DIGNITY
We are free to follow Dharma based on our free-will. In this, no credence or relevance is given to caste, creed, colour or position/status one is holding. Dharma, factually, is the value based. In following one’s Dharma, there cannot be any corrosion, bias, subjugation or oppression or any other consideration while pursuing our personal Dharma.
DHARMA IS BASED ON RIGHTEOUSNESS
Dharma is based on right-mindedness, right conduct, the right attitude, right thoughts, right action and living one’s life without let and hindrance without resorting to any sorts of violence and terror. In other words, the practice of Dharma unfolds human essence, human excellence, and divine potential.
DHARMA IN OUR FAMILY LIFE
Essentially, while we follow our family Dharma, we endeavour to follow all the norms of behaviour as a member of the family wherein all the members take decision in unison. In this scheme of things, social etiquettes, following and observing moral and ethical standpoints count a lot. Observation of our family dharma means observing all the norms of behaviour which help establish harmony amongst the members of the family.
ADHARMA OR IMMORAL LIFE COULD COST US DEARLY ULTIMATELY
A few days back, I happened to meet a lady whose daughter is studying in one of the institutes. Her daughter was found to have involved in the fight with another girl student of her class. The bone of contention was a common boyfriend. I asked the lady why she did not give quality time to her daughter to which she replied that she was the victim of domestic disharmony created by unfaithfulness or infidelity of her husband due to which she had to seek divorce for separation for good. This separation was thus due to distrust created by immoral conduct/activities followed by her husband. Following unethical and immoral life means following an unreasonable and irrational existence which breaks the closely knit family and thus is ADHARMA in true sense of terms. Immoral life not only adversely impacts spouses but also the children who are left to fend for themselves. It also put to disrepute the institution of marriage creating doubt in the minds of the impressionable minds – creating physiological and psychological implications for the children. This shows how following an ADHARMA or immoral lifestyle cost us dearly for us all.
DHARMA IN OUR COMMUNITY
Then, we have Dharma conduct that we have to follow in the community in which we are living. We have to work according to norms set by the society and we have to perforce follow those rules of behaviour. Following wrong or irrational path creates negative impact on our life. Some of us may think that my irrational behaviour may or may not be known to others but it is not so. An information revolution is going on. What we act willy– nilly comes on the spotlight sooner than later.
DESH DHARMA – DHARMA FOR OUR COUNTRY
Subsequently, we have DESH DHARMA (Dharma for our Country) that we have to follow for the country of our birth for the protection/safeguarding of its unity and integrity we are constrained to remain within the confines of laws of the land and never ever even think about its breakup.
THE UNIVERSAL DHARMA
Then we have Universal Dharma, the laws or rules which are relevant for all the countries of the world. UNO works on this philosophy but now–a–days, UNO too is not able to function rationally due to pulls and pressures of powerful lobbies which makes it difficult to follow the dharma for the world as a whole.
DHARMA AND SPIRITUALISM
Whatever duty we perform, we should do that with sincerity while following a life with positive orientation – a life of Dharma. It can also be that whatever we do, we can do that with the partnership of our GOD – bearing in mind that BHAKTI & SHAKTI could go together by adopting a Dharma lifestyle. In this quest, we should not follow a life of Adharma; unethical OR immoral lifestyle.
Dharma is based on our belief and faith. No credence is basically given to caste, colour or any other narrow consideration while we follow our Dharma.
Dharma is independent of any narrow considerations.
Dharma encompasses all rituals which rather confuse us.
Dharma is a science of values, without these, it cannot be followed in true sense of terms.
Dharma unfolds our inner potentials and helps unravel the Divine power which exists in us.
Following a life based on our DHARMA gives us joy of the highest order.
Dharma helps us to live spiritually – follow our belief system without let or hindrance.
Our Dharma dwells with us – it helps us never to live a life of ADHARMA which is the opposite of DHARMA.
MAHA SHIVRATRI IS THE PIOUS NIGHT (Happy MAHA SHIVRATRI – 15th FEBRUARY 2026
MAHA SHIVRATRI IS BOTH MOST AUSPICIOUS & PIOUS NIGHT
LORD SHIVA IS A MAHA YOGI, (WHO LOVES TO LIVE AT CREMATON GROUND) THE ONE, WHO LOVES HIS CREATION WITHOUT BIAS
MAHA SHIVRATRI
Maha Shivratri is celebrated on Krishna Paksha Chaturdashi in the month of Phalguna as per Hindu calendar which is in the month of February. This is an annual feature which is celebrated with great enthusiasm and reverence. This is the holiest day since this day is associated with the sacred marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati (the daughter of Himalaya) – in fact coming together of Shiva & Shakti.
SHIVRATRI MEANS THE NIGHT OF SHIVA
On this day devotees observe the strict fast and keep themselves awake during the night time, immersed in Lord’s prayers for deriving maximum benefits out of these sacred rituals.
SHIVRATRI IS LORD SHIVSHIVA’S MOST FAVOURITE DAY/NIGHT
When the earth was created, Shakti (Goddess Parvati) asked Lord Shiva which day was the dearest and favourite one for Him. Shiva replied that 14th night of the new moon in the month of Phalguna was most pleasing to Him. Parvati thus repeated these words amidst the company of friends and others and thus the word spread far and wide to the multitudes and since then this day is being celebrated with great adoration.
Maha Shivratri is associated with the marriage of Shiva and Shakti. The devotees (Bhakta) know the significance of this day since it is very dear to Lord SHIVA. On this day, the devotees in different age groups (young & old) take the early bath in some sacred rivers like Ganga, Yamuna etc and offer prayer (pooja) in temples and also make offerings of bel patra and other leaves including berries also pour water on the Shiva Linga. Before washing the Lingum (the symbol of Lord Shiva) with utmost reverence with milk, ghee, honey, rose water etc people chant mantras. As Lord Shiva is known for His austere living, he likes simple things and simple offerings in the form of herbs and leaves for pleasing him. Devout perform prayers with immense pleasure and devotion.
SHIVSHAKTI
Shiv-shakti Shiv is called Kala (the eternal time) and Parvati the consort of Shiv is also called Kali meaning ‘Time’ or ‘death’ (two mixed together means the ‘time has come’). Various people worship Shakti or Kali represents the feminine force whereas Shiva is the masculine force along with the power of peace.
It is pertinent to mention the background, as to how Shiva and Parvati had their first meeting. Parvati had seen Shiva while she was only eight years old. She formed an opinion that she will marry him only, when she grows up to be of marriageable age, while he (Lord Shiva) was in a meditative trance. When she grew up, she told her father (King Himavan) that she wanted to marry Shiva but he always remained in meditative consciousness. She was also fully determined to make him realize her love for him. She used to take leaves only and after a while, she left eating anything and thereafter even drinking water. Then finding the suitable opportunity, her father made mention about the state of health of his daughter to Shiva.
Mysticism of it all is that Shiva wanted to test her love for him still more. He went to her in the form of a handsome young man and asked her why she wanted to marry Shiva who, more often than not, remains in a meditative trance and always remains in the cremation grounds amongst ghosts etc with ash smeared on his body. He offered himself to marry her. Parvati straight away refused to marry him and was adamant that she will marry Shiva only and no one else. This way, he came back to his original form and asked Parvati for a boon. She asked Shiva to marry her.
There is also another legend attached to this day. At the time of the churning of the sea by the Godheads and the Demons (Rakshas) there surfaced a vessel full of poison amongst other enchanting objects like Kamdhenu (Wish-fulfilling cow, white horse, white elephant, Kalpavriksha (Wish-fulfilling tree), Lakshmi (Goddess of wealth), Dhanvantri (Divine Physician) and finally the vessel of Amrita (nectar). To save the world from the devastating effects of poison, Lord Shiva consumed the pot of poison and kept the same in his throat with his Yogic Powers and that is why He is also called NEELKANTHA or Blue Throated with immense reverence. By doing so, LORD SHIVA saved the world from being annihilated.
SHIVA OR SIVA means ‘that what is not’ or which is beyond anything or everything. It is comparable to the nothingness of vast cosmos/nothingness of space with galaxies, planets, etc. That which is propitious, pure, simple, gracious, benevolent and full of beauty. In Vedic scriptures/literature, Shiva also connotes liberation or emancipation. He is the auspicious deity who is creator, reproducer, and destroyer of the forces of negativism and darkness. Shaivism also represents beliefs and practices of Hinduism. Shiva is not affected by three Gunas (Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas). He is called Supreme Lord. He is a great Yogi. One who is beyond any limit of appreciation – nothingness which can absorb anything and everything.
A great Yogi who gave us Yoga and method of living – living as mystic Yogi but not oblivious of the family bondings. His contribution as a recluse and the householder is the phenomenon and cannot simply be ignored. The complexity of His traits as a deity cannot be comprehended if we do not delve deep into his life. In the earlier years, he used to wander in the Himalayan region and subsequently an ascetic who is always absorbed in Yogic meditation. This was proved right when the barat (marriage party) was received. Strange as it looked: Shiva as a groom, rode a bull, with matted hair, ash smeared all over the body, was a part of koupina or loincloth., a garland of bones and skulls, as usual, a trident in one hand and damru (drum) in the other hand.. There was the beating of drums and the mixed sound of trumpets – a terrific sound indeed. Amongst the baratis Marriage party) were Gods and Demi-Gods Not to speak of this, his marriage barati’s consisted of the ganas, ghosts and other strange and fearful witches, vampires etc. The marriage receiving party
LORD SHIVA IS A MYSTIC WHO COULD BE PLEASED EASILY
We always see him in meditative posture – completely immersed in contemplation. He is Yogi with a difference who could be termed as the deity who could be pleased with bel patra and fruits. Simple but sincere prayer can earn His bounties – that is why He is called as Bhole Shankar.
ULTIMATE WHEN WHILE IN FURY
When Shiva is provoked beyond a limit, when He is in trance, as was done by Kamadeva, He opened His third eye and reduced him to ashes in a fit of anger.
There are 12 Jyotirlingas (Lingas of Light) which are held sacred by the devotees. They offer prayers at these holy places.
Devout chant Mantra OM NAMON SHIVAYE and also Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra to get special benefits since this day falls in the most appropriate planetary positions in the Northern hemisphere; helps devotee raise his / her spiritual energy vigorously. The prayers are answered if these are done with sincerity. This day is also celebrated because on this night Shiva performed His cosmic dance (Tandava). This dance was enjoyed even by other Godheads.
Lord Shiva’s abode is mount Kailasha. He bearer of sacred river Ganga on his head besides a serpent named Vasuki. His devotee Nandi is the carrier of Lord Shiva.
In Shiv Purana, it has been mentioned that Shiva prayers should be done in the following manner to get maximum benefits:-
SHIV LINGA. Shiva means auspiciousness and lingam means a symbol and when put together it means: ‘a symbol of the great God of the universe who is all-auspicious’. It also means ‘the One in whom the whole of creation sleeps after dissolution. The worship of Shiva in the form of Longa is most prominent. It represents as a symbol God Himself. Shiva lingam is to be bathed in water, milk, and honey. For purification of these, bel patra should also be added. Vermilion paste represents virtue, after bathing the Shiva Linga with water, honey, curd etc with utmost devotion vermilion paste is applied on it.
Natural fruits like berries are very dear to the Lord, hence these are offered. Fruits are also the sign of fulfillment of our desires and hence should be offered.
Forgetting His grace and bounties offerings when dhoop (incense) is ritualistically burnt give maximum benefits.
The lamp is lighted. The lamp symbolizes knowledge and wisdom and keeps away our ignorance. If this is lighted with devotion and offered to the Lord, we can derive maximum benefits.
Om Namah Shivays also termed as Panchakshari Shiva Mantra: Chanting this Mantra purifies mind, body and soul; besides it bestows Dharma, Artha, Kama, and Moksha and is pleasing to Lord Shiva.
Mahamrityunjay Mantra: This Mantra is also termed as the Mrita-Sanjivini Mantra. Chanting tthis Mantra removes the fear of death besides granting lontivity.
Rudra Mantra. Chanting this Mantra grants us Lord Shiva’s bountiful blessings.
Shiv Dhyan Mantra. Chanting this Simple Mantra ‘Om Sivaye’ enhances our focus on the subject at hand.
Finally, betel leaves are offered which symbioses the satiation of our worldly desires besides keeping our spiritual onward march intact.

These are created only by some SUPREME BEING to whom we can feel if we have the right attitude and all the other fine-tuned attributes like love, trust, etc. He has fathered us for a purpose and it is our duty to fulfill the assigned tasks in whatever way we can – by helping those who are not able to help themselves, doing good to others, forgiving others’ follies etc.
I consider religion as a pathway to reach to our Creator, it may be any religion to that matter. One thing that binds us together is that our requirement(s) are the same. He has given His precious bounties like air, water and other the gifts of nature without any bias. Let us thank Him in our own way suiting us for connectivity with the Source and living a life full of peace and happiness.
LORD SHIVA

And the venerable Lord of all Lords, With healthy mix of potencies & benevolence, Enjoys esteemed place in realm of Godheads, With the power to cause destruction, Dissolving or destroying for fresh creation, On the premise, if end is not there then there is no fresh beginning A golden chance of our soul’s cleansing
Shiva is known variously by 1008 names according to Shiv Purana Mahadeva, Maheshwara, Ardnarishwara, Devadeva, Gurudeva, Lingaraja, Natraja, et al. In fact Vishveshwara – One who is the Lord of Universe.

The Lord is too found in Phallic Symbol of Linga. In this form, He is the Centrifugal Force of the Universe, And is mix of the simplest And most complex amongst all the deities. Mass of curly hair, crescent tucked into it, The Mighty Ganges flowing out from His piled hair. With trident representing true virtues, Coiled serpent named Vasuki signifying Kundalini, The immense spiritual energy within, Two sided drum (Damroo) drumming rhythmically, Enchants everyone including other Deities magically Simplest in His manifestation Immersed in His Yogic mystic meditation.
With ash smeared all over the body, Wearing Rudraksha beads round his neck and arms, He is the Lord whose grace could be had with ease, Differentiates not at all between demons or sages, While bestowing His graces, Demon King Ravana was His most likable devotee, Whosoever invoked Him with sincere love and piety, Becomes a candidate for His bounty, The Omniscient & Omnipotent Yogi’s abode is Mount Kailash, Where He dwells with our Divine Mother Parvati, And sons Ganesha & Kartikeya – the greatest in their own right, Lord Ganesha for His troubleshooting, And Lord Kartikeya for demon conquering, His Cosmic Dance is second to none, By this Cosmic Dance, all the Gods & Demi-Gods get enthralled.
Behold still, when immensely provoked by callous acts, Opens His Third Eye – a ferocious one And annihilates the evil doers Kama Deva, the God of Love got reprisal when he provoked Shiva when He was in deep meditation and met his end.
We rejoice this occasion and seek His Ultimate blessings with immensity of reverence in our inner recesses of being For our spiritual health and inner peace.
Conclusively, it is mentioned in scriptures that our LORD SHIVA is very benevolent, a simple prayer, simple offerings with sincerity could move Him to shower His Bountiful Blessings, therefore, pray for His graces and prevent all the fighting between countries.
