On one hand, India befriends Iran
Two Iranian warships take sanctuary in India and Sri Lanka
Defense News reports on the two Iranian ships that found safe harbor with India and Sri Lanka.
Two Iranian warships have docked in India and Sri Lanka after a U.S. submarine torpedoed an Iranian warship in the Indian Ocean just off Sri Lanka’s coast last week.
The sinking of the Iris Dena on March 4th was the first military strike outside the Middle East since the war began, and analysts say it raised concerns that the U.S.-Israeli military campaign against Iran could widen beyond the Persian Gulf if it drags on.
It also became a diplomatic embarrassment for New Delhi, which had hosted the sunken vessel for peacetime multilateral naval drills.
All three Iranian ships — the two vessels that are now in India and Sri Lanka as well as the torpedoed ship — were sailing in the Indian Ocean after participating in the exercises along India’s east coast.
The South Asian countries have called their decision to permit the ships to enter their ports a “humanitarian” gesture.
Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar told parliament Monday the Iranian ship Iris Lavan sailed into the southern port of Kochi last week after it reported a technical problem. Its crew, mostly young cadets, have been housed at Indian naval facilities.
He said that the government believed “it was the right thing to do.”
Sri Lanka, an Indian Ocean island country lying southeast of India, took control of Iran’s Irins Bushehr and offloaded some 288 crew members at Trincomalee port after the ship had sought assistance saying one of its engines malfunctioned.
A day earlier, its navy rescued 32 sailors and recovered 87 bodies from the sunken Dena.

It seems that India might be just staying out of the way of hotheads
While some accused India of supplying the coordinates of the Iris Dena, that seems preposterous considering the sophisticated targeting equipment available to the American ships.
Instead, it seems that India is just trying to thread a needle with the stumbling giants around it.
On the other hand, nobody can ignore the state sponsorship of terrorism borne by Iran
While India may have chosen to deal with Iran in order to keep their enemies close, they surely had to recognize the ill effects of giving money to the world’s largest supporter of terrorism.

India has a military sharing agreement with the U.S.
India-US sign 10-year defence pact amid tariff turmoil
The BBC documented the 10-year defence pact in a 31 October 2025 article written during the initial hoopla surrounding the tariffs.
India and the US have signed a framework agreement to expand defence cooperation over the next 10-years.
The pact was announced after a meeting between US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and his Indian counterpart Rajnath Singh in Kuala Lumpur.
The agreement will enhance “coordination, information sharing and tech cooperation” and advance “regional stability and deterrence”, Hegseth said on X.
It comes as the two countries are trying to close a trade deal and tide over tense ties after US President Donald Trump slapped 50% tariffs on India, including a 25% penalty for buying Russian oil and arms.
The agreement is expected to provide policy direction to the entire spectrum of the India-US defence relationship.
“It is a signal of our growing strategic convergence and will herald a new decade of partnership. Defence will remain as a major pillar of our bilateral relations. Our partnership is critical for ensuring a free, open and rules-based Indo-Pacific region,” Singh said, in a post on X.
According to Pramit Pal Chaudhuri of the Eurasia Group think tank, the agreement was supposed to have been concluded in July-August this year, but India’s irritation at Trump’s statements about his role in ending the conflict with Pakistan led to it getting delayed.
The pact is the latest in a series of agreements between the two countries that have made it “easier for the two militaries to achieve interoperability, India to access technology and the two defence sectors to work together”, Mr Chaudhuri said.
“This provides for further potential in all three areas,” he added.

As previously mentioned, some have cited this agreement as a source of the American ability to target the sunk Iranian ship
That suggestion that India needed to provide the coordinates of the Iranian ship are insane.

India buys oil from Russia
India’s Reliance buys 6 million barrels of Russian oil for March
Reuters informs us in a 9 March 2026 article of India’s continued purchases of oil from Russia.
India’s Reliance Industries Ltd. (RELI.NS) has bought at least 6 million barrels of Russian oil for March delivery after supplies from the Middle East were hit due to the Iran war, two industy sources with knowledge of the matter said.
India refiners have purchased millions of barrels of prompt Russian oil stuck at sea since Washington last week granted New Delhi a 30-day waiver from sanctions for cargoes loaded on vessels as of March 5.

It seems that India has no qualms about buying from Russia (and would have been doing so had it not been for the Trump tariffs)
For all who complain about the Trump tariffs, do you really approve of otherwise allowing the support of rouge states?

India is the one of a few countries to get its tankers through the Straits of Hormuz
Strait of Hormuz: Which countries’ ships has Iran allowed safe passage to?
Al Jazeera provides a short list of the countries allowed to pass through the Straits of Hormuz by Iran.
During the United States-Israeli war on Iran, Tehran has said the Strait of Hormuz is open to all except the US and its allies. One-fifth of the world’s oil shipments transit through the strait.
(continued)
Here is what we know about which countries’ ships are being allowed to pass through the strait and which nations are reported to be negotiating for safe passage.
Pakistan
A Pakistani-flagged Aframax tanker called Karachi sailed out of the Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday, Bloomberg News reported.
India
On Saturday, Iran’s ambassador to India, Mohammad Fathali, said Tehran had allowed some Indian vessels to pass through the Strait of Hormuz in a rare exception to the blockade that has disrupted global energy supplies.
Fathali did not confirm the number of vessels. However, on the same day, New Delhi said two Indian-flagged tankers carrying liquefied petroleum gas bound for ports in western India had passed through the strait.
“They crossed the Strait of Hormuz early morning safely and are en route to India,” Rajesh Kumar Sinha, special secretary of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, said at a news briefing in New Delhi.
Turkiye
A Turkish-owned ship that had been waiting near Iran was allowed to pass through the strait after authorities received permission from Tehran, Turkish Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu said in comments to Turkish media on Friday.
“Fifteen ships [with Turkish owners] were there. We obtained permission from the Iranian authorities for one of them that had used an Iranian port, and it passed,” Uraloglu said.
China
China is in talks with Iran to allow crude oil and Qatari liquified natural gas carriers safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, the Reuters news agency reported on March 5, quoting three unnamed diplomatic sources.
China, which has friendly relations with Iran and relies heavily on Middle Eastern petroleum supplies, is unhappy about Iran’s decision to paralyse shipping through the strait and is pressing Tehran to allow safe passage for its vessels, according to the sources.
China receives 45 percent of its oil via the Strait of Hormuz.
France and Italy
The two European nations are understood to have requested talks with Iran about allowing their ships to pass through the strait, the UK’s Financial Times has reported, citing unnamed officials.
What is the naval coalition Trump proposed for the strait?
US President Donald Trump called for a naval coalition to join the US Navy in deploying warships to secure the strait.

So it seems that India was not the only one getting ships through. But they did get the most ships through.
France, Italy, and China may have talked about getting a ship through. Pakistan and Turkey may have gotten a ship through. However, it was India that got multiple ships through the otherwise closed straits.
