Has anybody seen PROJECT HAIL MARY yet?

I honestly was planning to skip it. I’m more of a blow-em-up kind of science fiction movie fan, but I keep hearing it’s not half bad. Anybody go and got impressed by it?

PS: I honestly don’t why I skipped THE MARTIAN, either. I used to read Andy Weir’s webcomic religiously. You’d think I’d be all about watching adaptations of his films.

Birthday in a week!

The celebratory plan is simple: Brazilian steakhouse. We have found a good place near us*. I shall make certain to have only a minimalist breakfast and lunch ahead of time.

That’s it. That’s the post. It’s kind of been a slow month, honestly.

*If it falls through, the backup plan is also simple: Korean BBQ. Which is what we did last year, when the steak place we were originally going to go to turned out to be packed. We ended up being mightily pleased that the plan had changed.

Books of the Week: The Age of Unreason.

I’m recommending Greg Keyes’ The Age of Unreason partially because it’s a pretty good alchemical-punk alternate history series (featuring people like Sir Isaac Newton and Ben Franklin), but also because it has a few things to say about artificial intelligence. Or, more accurately, it has a few things to say about some of the blind spots we’re seeing from people who are just a little too enthusiastic about LLMs. Be sure to check out the books!
