KARP (VOL I)

ADVENTURES & ANGELS is now available here on AMAZON:

Other than the Prologue, which has been deliberately paused at the part of the supernatural intervention, the remaining chapters are written to introduce young Karp and his accompanying characters.

Most of the poignant life stories we review have either been based upon my own life experiences, testimonies I’ve read and heard, or heart-rending situations that have impacted me sufficiently to make me want to shout out and echo the words of so many philosophers before me through the ages, “those who cannot learn from history, are doomed to repeat it.”

As we meet each character and they open their lives to examination, we see how similar we all really are. How the same grasping passions that were at work in our ancestors in the first century – greed, pride, fear, doubt and even self-loathing, run eternally and consistently through us all within the twenty-first. Even though we view life through a harsh unbending prism of reality because the light and hope of God burns anew and is ever faithful towards his children who are locked within their own personal struggles.

In the opening chapters, we see how Karp’s family perished through an outbreak of Cholera and how, in his depressive state, he was kidnapped, brutally abused, and forced into slavery, yet divinely protected and ultimately loved and mothered through the rekindled kindness of a lonely old spinster, who we find is none other than a seventy-year-old, depressed, and companionless, Mary Magdalene.

We also meet several other predominant characters who have already enjoyed a footnote in Christian lore and world mythology. These characters are brought back into the light within the pages of the book, and as we investigate their lives, I believe that we, too, will be challenged by their choices.

From helping a King to rescue a kidnapped princess and working covertly with the occupying Roman forces to rid the islands of evil marauding pirates to then dealing with the terrible demonic powers at the temple of Artemis of Ephesus, Karp is always at the forefront of adventurous events and spurs us all on ever to choose the greater paths of hope and faith.

One day Jesus taught his disciples this: “Betrayals are inevitable, but great devastation will come to the one guilty of betraying others. It would be better for him to have a heavy boulder tied around his neck and be hurled into the deepest sea than to face the punishment of betraying one of my dear ones!

So be alert to your brother’s condition, and if you see him going the wrong direction, cry out and correct him. If there is true repentance on his part, forgive him. No matter how many times in one day your brother sins against you and says, ‘I’m sorry; I am changing; forgive me,’ you need to forgive him each and every time.”

Upon hearing this, the apostles said to Jesus, “Lord, you must increase our measure of faith!” (Luke‬ ‭17:1)

This message must surely be for me only today, I cannot believe that anyone other than me struggles with forgiveness…! “Holy Father, open the eyes of my heart (again) to see just what the sin of my unforgiving attitude did to you on the cross. I choose to forgive those who have hurt me – Lord, help me to release my memories of the events to you. Amen.

Thank you my awesome Father. ❤️

Day 75

https://www.muchgracepublications.com/daily-blog/

(James 1:5) “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.”

This series explores how God speaks to us. Part 19: Wisdom (Discernment) — knowing how to apply God’s truth in complex, everyday decisions.

What is Wisdom (Discernment) in practical terms?

– The skill of spotting key differences in people, choices, and situations, then choosing the wisest, most ethical action.

– Noticing what matters in a situation and prayerfully picking the best, most Christian [moral] course.

What it looks like

– Slowing down to gather facts before deciding.

– Testing options against clear values or principles (e.g., Scripture, conscience, organisational mission).

– Asking focused questions: What are the motives? Who benefits or is harmed? What are the likely consequences?

– Seeking input from trusted, experienced people.

– Noticing emotional influences (fear, pride, haste) and separating them from clear reasons.

– Choosing small experiments or incremental steps when outcomes are uncertain.

– Willingness to revise a decision when new evidence or correction appears.

Concrete examples:

– Sensing that a colleague’s praise has an ulterior motive, then verifying before trusting them.

– Recognising a too-good-to-be-true offer, researching details, and declining if red flags persist.

– Distinguishing constructive criticism from personal attack and responding productively.

– Choosing when to speak up about wrongdoing versus when to gather more information first.

– Prioritising requests based on urgency, impact, and alignment with goals.

Life without wisdom [discernment] is aimless, short-sighted, and full of unnecessary pain. Life with wisdom (discernment) is purposeful, clear-sighted, and marked by right choices that bless you and others.

+++
Let’s pray, “Heavenly Father, You promise Wisdom to those who ask. I ask now—give me clear, humble wisdom for the decisions and trials before me. Keep my heart soft and teachable, so I receive Your guidance. Help me rejoice in Your true exaltation and be content and humble in every season. Keep pride from my heart and grant me the perspective that honours You rather than myself. Fill me with Your Spirit, steady my steps, and let Your wise presence shape my thoughts and actions.” Amen!

(Acts 10:34) “Truly I understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. ”

Here is the much-awaited second part to yesterday’s message from John Hagee:

BIBLICAL IGNORANCE ABOUT WOMEN IN MINISTRY—Two lies that the Church tell women today. (2Women must not preach or teach to a man in a Church setting…!

Some base this teaching on two particular Bible verses, 1 Timothy, “Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet.” and 1 Corinthians 14:34, “The women should keep silent in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak, but should be in submission, as the Law also says. If there is anything they desire to learn, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is shameful for a woman to speak in church.”

I will tell you why that happened … Paul was an Orthodox Jew speaking to Jewish people and their conduct at the Synagogue. Factually, he was having trouble with women speaking out because of this. Then, and now, Orthodox Synagogues have a curtain that runs the length of the middle aisle. The women are on one side and all the men on the other. What was happening was that Paul (or the Rabbi) was speaking, the women were not picking up on what was being preached, and they started shouting to their husbands through the curtain, “… What does he mean by that?”

Paul was simply saying, “Stop that! Go home and let your husband explain that to you!”

This is an honest answer. To say that a woman in the 21st Century may not preach or teach the Word of God simply because of Orthodox custom is just Biblical ignorance. You only need to do minimal research to see that God has favoured women to be world-shakers throughout history!

+++
Let’s pray, “Heavenly Father, You have shown us that You show no partiality. Help us likewise to reflect Your impartial love in our hearts and actions. Remove prejudice, pride, and fear; give us eyes to see every person as made in Your image and worthy of dignity. Teach us to welcome others into Your family with humility and grace, to listen more than we judge, and to serve without favouritism. Fill our communities with unity that mirrors Christ’s reconciling love.” Amen!

Day 73

https://www.muchgracepublications.com/daily-blog/

(Galatians 3:28) “There is neither male nor female… in Christ Jesus,”

I’m pausing the series to address something that’s been on my heart for a long time. As the father of three wonderful daughters, and having had the joy of knowing my wife and many of her Christian friends, I want to speak sincerely about Paul’s instruction in 1 Timothy 2:11–12—“I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet”—and the related passage in 1 Corinthians 14:34–35, which calls for women to be silent in the churches and to ask questions at home. With that in mind, John Hagee, a man of God I deeply respect, addresses this beautifully:

THE TRUTH ABOUT WOMEN IN MINISTRY—Two lies that the Church tell women today. (1Women are not equipped to assume leadership in the Church…!
Church history has been hostile to women. Listen to the leaders of the past: John Knox said, “Women in her greatest perfection was made to serve and obey men.” Likewise, St. Augustine said, “I fail to see what women can be to a man if one excludes the function of bearing children.” Billy Sunday said, “Concerning women leading in the Church, it produces a plastic, spineless and effeminate, sissyfied Christianity.”

But did Jesus believe women could lead? In Jesus’ ministry, women were the ‘last‘ to leave the cross and the ‘first‘ to arrive at the tomb! Where were the men? They were hiding, terrified! Luke 8:1 states, “…the twelve were with him, and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, and Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod’s household manager, and Susanna, and many others, who provided for them out of their means.”

There was always a group of women who ministered to Jesus’ needs during His ministry. Did the Holy Spirit exclude women when He fell in the upper room? Many of the women who followed Christ, including His mother, were there to receive the Holy Spirit. Acts 2:17 says: “Your sons and your daughters shall prophecy…”

The Holy Spirit included women!
What was the purpose of the Holy Spirit in the Upper Room? To empower people to fulfil the Great Commission! “Go into all the World and preach the Gospel to every creature…!” (To be continued…)

+++
Let’s pray, “Heavenly Father, thank You for the women You call, gift, and send into ministry. Bless their faithfulness, wisdom, compassion, and courage. Fill them with Your Spirit, Truth, and Grace; give them boldness and humility. Grant leaders wisdom, and congregations open hearts to recognise and affirm their gifts. Heal wounds of rejection, restore dignity, and bring reconciliation so your Church may serve in unity. Empower women in teaching, leading, and serving for the growth of Your kingdom.” Amen!

(Isaiah 41:10) “…Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

This series explores how God speaks to us. Part 18: Grief — the normal response to losing something precious.

TESTIMONY – For years, I lived under the same relentless grief. Night after night, the nightmares came, and my mother—fierce and faithful—did everything she could. She would find me on the stairs, shaking and screaming, her face wet with tears. She called the priest, she walked the rooms with prayer and blessing, she would not let me fight alone. Still, the thing called, and like a hooked fish, I felt I had no choice but to answer.
I hadn’t met Jesus then, and I learned the hard way people survive—by shutting down, by hardening, by whatever small, stubborn survival tricks I could conjure. She had placed a crucifix above my bed, and I remember staring up and wondering how someone nailed to a cross could help me. The question lived in me like a small, aching doubt.
One night, the demonic call came again. I moved on automatically, climbed the landing, trying to outrun the fear. I tried a plan born of childish bravery: I spun, jumped the bannister, and forgot the dark. I hit the floor with a crack that rang through me—my ankle broken, my shoulder slammed into the wall. Pain and fear blurred together, but adrenaline pushed me on. I scrambled to the bannister, hooked my arm, and saw it at last—not a totally grotesque monster but something eerily beautiful, hair flowing, pulsing light—and a face full of cold triumph. My mouth dried; I could not call for help.
Then everything changed. In the middle of that terror, something came alongside me—some Presence, some Force—so real I could not name it. The pull stopped. The thing’s triumph broke into stunned confusion. It bowed its head, said, “I am sorry. I will not come to you again,” and vanished. I collapsed as my mother rushed out to me, falling on me and crying prayers to Jesus. I went to the hospital with a fractured ankle and bruised shoulder, but I went under the shelter of her love and His Divine protection.

Looking back, two truths stand out: my mother’s fierce love, and her total belief in this Jesus—that began to hold me. They didn’t erase the scars, but they opened a path to healing and the knowledge that I was not alone.

If you’re in that dark place, you are not alone. Help can come in small, steady ways—someone’s prayer, a caring hand, and the patient presence of God—and with one gentle step at a time, there is hope.

+++
Let’s pray, “Heavenly Father, You have promised not to leave us or forsake us. Help us to cling to Your Word. Breathe peace into our trembling hearts, steady our steps, and replace doubt with the quiet courage of Your presence. Help me to receive the small, faithful hands You send—prayers, care, and truth—and to take the next gentle step toward healing. Remind me that Your strength is made perfect in my weakness, and that I am held by a righteous hand that will not let me go.” Amen!

Day 71

(John 16:33) [Jesus speaking] “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart—I have overcome the world.”

This series explores how God speaks to us. Part 18: Grief — the normal response to losing something precious.

God will never abandon us to griefScripture repeatedly affirms that God draws near, comforts, and participates in our grief.

Grief can touch your feelings (sadness, anger), your body (fatigue, poor sleep), your mind (confusion, trouble focusing), and your spirit (doubt, a loss of meaning).

Sometimes it feels like a wall between you and God: anger or numbness makes prayer hard, painful questions crowd your heart, unmet expectations leave you feeling abandoned, and sheer exhaustion drains your spiritual strength.

Be honest with God—pour out your pain as the psalmists do—and stay near in small ways: a brief prayer, a comforting verse, or a familiar song.

Let others in; their presence often matters more than answers.

Name your feelings and consider speaking with a priest, pastor, trusted friend, or a recognised grief group. Above all, cling to who God is—even when your emotions don’t match that truth.

Like bringing a virus‑infected computer to an expert, bring your wounded heart to the Holy Spirit, who gently steadies, reframes, and heals with patient care.

+++
Let’s pray, “Heavenly Father, when grief, fear, or weariness rise, remind me that You are with me and have already won the final victory. Give me courage to face today, peace that steadies my heart, and hope that outlives my circumstances. Help me rest in Your triumph, trust Your presence, and lean on Your strength.” Amen!

Day 70

https://www.facebook.com/groups/muchgrace/
https://www.muchgracepublications.com/daily-blog/

(Ezekiel 36:26) “…I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.”

This series is about how GOD is believed to communicate with us all. This next part is through (17) REVIVAL (awakening). NB – Because free will allows us to choose destruction, GOD uses whatever means He wills to rescue us—and one of His life‑changing gifts is revival.

TESTIMONY – There have been many seasons of Revival fire in my lifetime—movements that shook pews and spilled into the streets. One such blaze was the Brownsville Revival (1995–2000, Pensacola, USA): a sustained, Spirit-driven awakening that set hearts afire, filled altars with tears and shouts, and forged disciples whose faith kept burning long after the lights dimmed. I remember it being broadcast live on Christian networks—households tuned in, hungry for something real.

While this was happening, in the heat of a difficult squash match, I broke my ankle hard—the pain was immediate, the joint swelling and blackening as if my body had been branded. I couldn’t put weight on it; crutches became my lifeline. I’d hobble into work at 6:30 a.m., feet aching, and turn on the Revival as I set up for the day, drinking in the prayers and testimonies like medicine.
One morning, the service focused on healing. I prayed with everything in me, tried rising to my feet with raw hope—and was slammed back down by pain so fierce I saw stars. I tried two more times; each attempt ended the same. I felt defeated and ashamed, whispering, “Sorry, Lord,” as if my faith had failed.

Then, at 8:30 am, my Technical Director arrived and found me standing by the water cooler, arms raised, singing along to the Worship—no crutches in sight.

I have no clear memory of how I’d gotten there. My ankle was still swollen and bruised, but somehow I was now walking unaided. It felt like a small miracle—an ordinary morning touched by a whisper of Grace that turned my despair into stunned, grateful Praise! (Warren)

Revival is midwifed by costly prayer and shepherds who bow low. The cheap thrill–seekers won’t find it on God’s market stall; it rests in His hand, waiting for the brave to approach and ask.

+++
Let’s pray, “Heavenly Father, come now and do this work in me. Remove my heart of stone—hardened by sin, fear, and pride—and replace it with a heart of flesh that feels for You and for others. Fill me with Your Spirit: soften what is stubborn, ignite what is cold, and renew my desires to love, obey, and serve You. Teach me to walk in Your ways, to hate what displeases You, and to delight in Your truth. By Your mercy, let this new heart bear fruit—repentance, compassion, faith, and steadfastness—so Your name is glorified in me.” Amen!

Day 69

(Joel 2:28) “…I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions… in those days I will pour out my Spirit.”

This series is about how GOD is believed to communicate with us all. This next part is through (17) REVIVAL (awakening). NB – Because free will allows us to choose destruction, GOD uses whatever means He wills to rescue us — and one of His life‑changing gifts is revival.

While we were Bible students at Kingdom Faith, an American pastor and his team came to visit—and I was assigned to go to the airport to pick them up. Apparently, his church was in the midst of a revival back home, and that evening something extraordinary happened in our meeting: a roiling, beautiful cloud formed on the platform about a metre high. Some saw it clearly; many more only felt it. My wife dug her nails into my palm so hard the marks stayed for days.

The cloud hovered there, radiant and holy, for about five unforgettable minutes, then suddenly surged forward and passed through the entire congregation—800 to 1,000 people. For many, it brought wild, overflowing rejoicing; for others, it was overwhelming—some ran out screaming (and didn’t come back for days). One of the Bible College teachers later said, “It was much too real for me…”!

I’ve never forgotten how tangible GOD can be—mysterious, gentle, terrifying, and utterly loving all at once.

In fact, when my wife and I were first born again, we joined a little house church in Haworth, Yorkshire, where the miraculous felt ordinary and close. We watched in stunned gratitude as a crippled girl’s leg grew before our eyes. We saw people arrive in wheelchairs and, after encounters with GOD, sob as they pushed those same chairs back to their cars—empty! Broken marriages were mended, estranged families were brought together, and hope felt tangible in every room. Then, painfully and suddenly, it all began to unravel. Because we didn’t recognise the enemy’s subtle lies, the joy we had known was shaken when the pastor betrayed his marital vows with the woman who played the keyboard—and with that betrayal came confusion, grief, and a faith community left to pick up the pieces…!

Each revival is born and kept alive by costly, fervent prayer and humble pastors. It isn’t stocked on GOD’s supermarket shelves—yet it waits in His hand for all who dare to ask!

+++
Let’s pray, “Heavenly Father, we come in humble dependence, longing for Your renewing fire. Stir in us the Spirit of persistent prayer; teach us to seek You with expectant hearts. Raise up humble, faithful leaders with integrity and shepherd’s love. Awaken Your Church through clear, Christ‑centered preaching so repentance and transformed lives follow. Prepare us by Your Spirit—cleanse, soften, and ready us to receive. Whether revival is gradual or sudden, let its fruit be lasting: deep discipleship, strengthened churches, and holy transformation that honours Jesus. Come, Holy Spirit—revive, renew, and send us.” Amen!

KARP (VOL I)

ADVENTURES & ANGELS

My book has finally been published …

Other than the Prologue, which has been deliberately paused at the part of the supernatural intervention of GOD, the remaining chapters are written to introduce a wonderful character called Karp and his accompanying characters. Most of the poignant life stories we review have either been based upon my own life experiences, testimonies I’ve read and heard, or heart-rending situations that have impacted me sufficiently to make me want to shout out and echo the words of so many philosophers before me through the ages: “Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it.”

As we meet each character and they open their lives to examination, we see how similar we all really are. How the same grasping passions that were at work in our ancestors in the first century – greed, pride, fear, doubt and even self-loathing, run eternally and consistently through us all within the twenty-first. Even though we view life through a harsh, unbending prism of reality because the light and hope of God burns anew and is ever faithful towards his children who are locked within their own personal struggles.

Day 68

(Psalm 85:6) “Will you not revive us again, that your people may rejoice in you?”

This series is about how GOD is believed to communicate with us all. This next part is through (17) REVIVAL (awakening). NB – Because free will allows us to choose destruction, GOD uses whatever means He wills to rescue us — and one of His life‑changing gifts is revival.

Revivals are not just about huge supernatural breakthroughs; GOD can (will) use anything to save us from ourselves! For example, A churchgoer who’d stopped attending services was visited one cold evening by his Pastor. The Pastor didn’t speak and just sat in silence by the blazing fire. After watching the coals for a while, and still without a word, he picked out a large log and set it aside; as its flame dwindled and died, the two men sat quietly, feeling the room grow colder. After a few minutes, the Pastor gently returned the now cold ember to the heart of the fire. It flared up at once, warm and glowing. Deeply moved, the man wiped away a tear and said, “Thank you for your fiery sermon — I’ll be back in church next Sunday.”

I’ve been searching for a simple definition of revival. This testimony by Charles Finney in God’s Generals expresses that truth plainly, and I will base my series on it.

The manager of a Cotton Mill—haunted by drunkenness, fights, and the hollow lives around him—asked Charles Finney to speak to his workers at lunchtime.

Amid the clatter and steam of the Cotton Mill, Finney climbed the gantry above the machines to pray. From that high perch, he caught the eye of a young girl working a machine and smiled. She returned his smile, then suddenly flushed and sank to her knees, overcome with conviction. One by one, the faces of the workers around her changed—workers began dropping their tools, tears began to fall, wails, cries, and confessions rose. Repentance spread like wildfire. The manager himself stepped out and, seeing the scene, ordered the machines stopped and Finney to speak.

When Finney spoke, there were no polite abstractions. He preached with the force of a man who felt eternity pressing in—plain, urgent, uncompromising. He named sin for what it was, demanded immediate repentance, and hammered Scripture into everyday conscience. His words cut through pretence; his calls to confess and believe were direct and unavoidable.
The effect was instantaneous and electric. Men and women, driven by conviction, came forward with raw testimony and public confession. Conversions and renewed vows erupted across benches and walkways as lives turned from old patterns to a new allegiance—Christ Jesus!

They did not leave the moment to burn out. Prayer meetings sprang up, discipleship groups formed, and local churches rallied to care for the newly awakened. What began with a single trembling girl became a sweeping tide of restoration—Evidence that GOD, through plain, passionate words followed by corporate repentance and faithful follow‑up, can bring spiritual and social renewal to the most neglected places.

+++
Let’s pray, “Heavenly Father, I come before You asking, Will You not revive me again? Breathe new life into my ever hardening, judgemental heart. Stir repentance where there is coldness, rekindle zeal where there is apathy, and restore my joy in Your presence. Teach me to walk in holiness, unite me with Your Body in faithful love, and raise up a lasting harvest of praise and obedience for Your Glory.” Amen!

Day 67

(Acts 20:7) Paul raises Eutychus after he falls from a window.
“Do not be alarmed, for his life is in him.”

This series is about how GOD is believed to communicate with us all. This next part is through (16) TESTIMONY (witness)—Honest (vulnerable) testimonies always invite — not coerce! GOD uses these Spirit-empowered testimonies to encourage believers and multiply faith as people encounter both the story AND the living GOD behind it.

TESTIMONY – enough about me! Here’s a fabulous testimony from our brother Akin in Nigeria

“I have been privileged to bear some dramatic and consequential testimonies in my life, to the glory of God. Like when, one morning, I woke up to find out that I was paralysed from head to toe and was rushed to a hospital.

I managed to say that God wanted to make a point, and He will make it very loud and clear, and that I would drive myself out of the hospital soon. Shortly after that, I lost consciousness.

I was later told that a laboratory technician who was requested to run a test on my blood sample said the reading was that of a corpse.

I recovered miraculously after 3 days but stayed in the hospital for a couple of weeks longer and was then discharged, and I asked for my car to be brought to me, and I drove myself home.

No one could say what exactly happened to me. Worthy as this is, and thankful as I am, there is nothing surprising about this. After all, my God is the Almighty and sovereign God. The miracle worker for whom nothing is impossible.” (Akin x)

Let’s pray, “Heavenly Father, we come together as those gathered on the first day, listening to Your Word and sharing life and bread. Fill our meeting with Your Spirit: give us ears to hear, hearts ready to obey, and courage to speak truth in love. Where there is weariness, revive; where there is sorrow, bring comfort; where someone has fallen, raise them up by Your power as You raised Eutychus through Your servant Paul. Let Your presence knit us together, strengthen our faith, and send us out renewed to serve and love one another.” Amen!

Day 66

(Acts 1:8) Jesus speaking: “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

TESTIMONY – continued “… The third part of my testimony has already been covered here, under (13) ACTION (obedience):
 https://www.muchgracepublications.com/day-54-4/

So, here’s Part 4 – “…My mother was locking up the newsagent’s by the time I came back from my visit to the hospital clinician. I went into the kitchen as she wrapped up all the unsold papers, made two coffees, and carried them into the little kitchen at the back. I remember her moving with the same practised economy she had used for decades—one hand already wiping the counter, the other reaching for a chair—so when I said, “Mamma, please sit down. I have something important to tell you,” she paused, the cloth halfway across the surface.
She sat opposite me and tilted her face, waiting. Expectation tightened her jaw; caution sat in the small, quick blink before she spoke. “What have you done this time, my son…? Don’t tell me that nice Tracey [my wife now of 40 years] has finished with you?”
A laugh came out of me, thin and a little breathless. “No…” I let the word hang there, then added, steadier: “…Mamma, I’m a Christian.”
For the longest time, she simply stared at me, as if measuring the weight of the label with her eyes. Then she dropped her face into her hands and began to cry, the sound small and sharp. “No, Gesù. Non di nuovo.” [No, Jesus—not again].
It took a long while to calm her. I poured more coffee and sat close enough to feel the heat of her arm when she let me put mine around her shoulders. She then began telling me about her time as a young girl in Bari, Italy…
“The war was brutal,” she said, her voice rough with memory. “Food was desperately scarce. If it hadn’t been for some men—men from the Mafia—stealing supplies from the Allies, we would have all starved.” Her hands traced an invisible map on the table as she spoke. “My favourite uncle worked for them. One night, he got into big trouble with them. We never knew exactly what he had done. He ran away and hid in a convent for many weeks, and when he came back, all he could say was that he’d met ‘Jesus’ and that He’d saved him.”
She swallowed. The old hurt settled into the room like a winter cold. “Men from the Mafia were searching everywhere for him, but some of his good friends took him that very night and hid him on a ship at the harbour, sailing directly to America. He left with just the shirt on his back, and we never saw him again. I loved him! Will GOD take you from me, too?”
She searched my face. Her question was small and fierce.
I slid my hand over hers and squeezed. “No, Mamma.” I kept my voice steady because my heart felt like it might break. “Why would He do that?” I asked, and let the warmth of my arm be the answer.
NB – Years later, I learned the rest: my mother’s uncle arrived in America and, according to the letters I found from his son, soon had a church and became ‘Pastor del Zotti’. The fact settled into the story like the last piece of a puzzle, softening nothing, explaining almost everything… (Warren)

+++
Let’s pray, “Heavenly Father, fill me with your Holy Spirit and grant me boldness. Empower me to be your witness in my place and to the ends of the earth. Give me courage to speak your truth clearly, compassion to love those I meet, and wisdom to follow your leading without doubting your guiding hand. When fear, doubt, or hesitation rise, remind me of your presence and strengthen my trust in your direction. Let your power, not my strength, move through me so lives are touched and your name is honoured.” Amen!
