Time for joy and time for cheer… oh wait, that’s a different song. But you know what? This year we truly were yearning for Spring!
Our beloved country was devastated by never ending floods and strong winds and at last, there’s warm sunlight, a flowery breeze and sweet young birds everywhere.
And we have also completed our celebratory image for Cirsova! This is a sneak peak of one of the main characters and this week, we will share with you the complete image.

We have shamelessly infiltrated ourselves into the celebrations and are hard at work to finish this piece for them which, for now, is only in its sketching stage.

A energia deste ano promete ser ousada, transformadora e cheia de movimento. Vamos ver aonde nos leva e que todos nós possamos aproveitar o impulso deste corcel flamejante para alcançar os nossos objetivos, ao ritmo que consigamos, seja a galopar, seja a trote.

The 14th of February is here with its romantic flair, and to that we say: Happy Saint Valentine’s Day! But today it also marks the beginning of a period of festivities known as Entrudo, here in our small, rain‑afflicted country. And believe us, with all these storms we’ve been having, it couldn’t have come at a better time.
Entrudo, from the Latin word Introitum, is an ancient ritual in Portugal that predates Christian times. It is deeply connected to winter and to rites of folk esotericism, in which a community establishes a space of controlled chaos to ensure that the rest of the year will be well‑behaved. (Many say it is essential for growing good crops and keeping farm animals healthy)
Thus, for three days, mostly in our northern villages, the streets become battlefields of mischief, where neighbours, kin, or friends throw buckets of water, small palm‑sized bags filled with flour, eggs, tangerines, and, in some places, you’ll even have to run from people trying to paint your face with soot! Nevertheless, it is safe to say that nowadays some of these practices have been toned down. Well, just be careful either way.
Here, the centre stage of the celebrations belongs to the enigmatic Caretos!

This year, we bring you another one of these amazing masked figures, from the village of Lazarim, which is considered one of the most authentic Entrudo celebrations in our country.
Unlike other Caretos, the Careto from Lazarim wears a wooden mask made of alder tree wood, and left unpainted. This fact alone makes it stand out from other masks in Portugal. Their clothes are made from whatever is around: mainly pieces of rope, hay, and wool. Skilled seamstresses sew the materials together, while the men sculpt the masks, a tradition passed from father to son.
The festivities culminate in a grand parade, with the Caretos walking the streets of Lazarim to the sound of drums, pranking whoever crosses their path. As one can guess, the anonymity of the mask allows them to perform all kinds of mischief and, of course, taunt any young woman who crosses their path. But young and older ladies don’t need to feel threatened; the prank will only go as far as you’re willing to allow it, and often, it’s the village’s women, in on the joke, that suffer the worst of it. An extra tidbit: these Caretos can be either male or female. You never know who’s behing the mask.
Another wondrous feat, for someone dressed in wood cords and leaves is their amazing jumps over fire (perhaps it is a good thing that the Entrudo is celebrated in the Wintery, rainy season after all)
Thus the Careto jumps, offends, and embraces. In the Entrudo, all this is allowed.

O dia 14 de Fevereiro chegou com o seu toque romântico e, por isso, também dizemos: Feliz Dia de São Valentim! Mas hoje assinala igualmente o início de um período de festividades conhecido como Entrudo, aqui no nosso pequeno país tão fustigado pela chuva. E acreditem, com todas estas tempestades que temos tido, não podia vir em melhor altura.
O Entrudo, que vem da palavra latina Introitum, é um ritual antiquíssimo em Portugal, anterior aos tempos cristãos. Está profundamente ligado ao inverno e a ritos de esoterismo popular, nos quais a comunidade cria um espaço de caos controlado para garantir que o resto do ano decorra de forma ordeira. (Muitos dizem que é essencial para boas colheitas e para manter os animais saudáveis.)
Assim, durante três dia, sobretudo nas aldeias do Norte, as ruas transformam‑se em autênticos campos de batalha de travessuras, onde vizinhos, familiares ou amigos atiram baldes de água, pequenos sacos do tamanho da palma da mão cheios de farinha, ovos, tangerinas e, nalguns sítios, ainda temos de fugir de quem tenta pintar-nos a cara com cinzas! Ainda assim, é seguro dizer que hoje em dia algumas destas práticas já foram amansadas. Bom, é melhor ir à cautela na mesma.
Por cá, o centro das celebrações pertence aos enigmáticos Caretos! Há muito tempo fizemos um post sobre eles, e convidamos-vos a relê‑lo ou a descobri‑lo pela primeira vez:

Este ano trazemos outra destas figuras mascaradas magníficas, vinda da aldeia de Lazarim, onde decorre a que é considerada uma das celebrações de Entrudo mais autênticas do país.
Ao contrário de outros Caretos, o Careto de Lazarim usa uma máscara de madeira de amieiro, sem pintura. Só este detalhe já a distingue das restantes máscaras portuguesas. As suas roupas são feitas do que houver à mão — principalmente cordas, palha e lã. Costureiras habilidosas cosem os materiais, enquanto os homens esculpem as máscaras, numa tradição passada de pai para filho.
As festividades culminam num grande desfile, com os Caretos a percorrer as ruas de Lazarim ao som dos tambores, pregando partidas a quem lhes aparecer pela frente. Como se pode imaginar, o anonimato da máscara permite‑lhes todo o tipo de travessuras e, claro, provocações às jovens que encontram pelo caminho. Mas nem jovens nem mulheres mais velhas precisam de se sentir ameaçadas — a brincadeira só vai tão longe quanto cada uma permitir e, muitas vezes, são as próprias mulheres da aldeia, cúmplices na partida, que acabam por apanhar com o pior. Um pequeno detalhe extra: estes Caretos tanto podem ser masculinos como femininos. Nunca se sabe o que está por debaixo da máscara.
Outro feito impressionante, para alguém vestido com cordas, madeira e folhas, são os seus saltos por cima de fogueiras (talvez seja mesmo uma sorte o Entrudo celebrar‑se no tempo do frio e da chuva)
Assim, o Careto salta, ofende e abraça. No Entrudo, tudo isto é permitido.
