Shanga Karim is a Kurdish–Canadian writer and former journalist from Kurdistan, Northern Iraq. Before coming to Canada, she worked as a journalist and editor-in-chief, reporting on violence against women, honour killings, and female genital mutilation. In 2015, she fled to Canada, where she continued her commitment to storytelling and advocacy through literature, writing, and community engagement. She holds a BA in Media and a Creative Writing Certificate from Simon Fraser University’s Writer’s Studio. Shanga is the Vancouver Coordinator for The Shoe Project, a national initiative that supports immigrant and refugee women through writing, storytelling, and performance. She also facilitates workshops for newcomer women, empowering them to share their experiences of migration and resettlement. Her work has appeared in Geographies of the Heart (UBC Press, 2024), at the Vancouver Writers Festival (2019), Emerge 24 by SFU, and in other publications. She received the 2022 Renate Shearer Human Rights Award from the United Nations of Canada.
