Another Year, Another Resolution(s)?

In a few more days, the new year will be upon us again... How time flies.

Some of my friends are already setting their resolutions for the new year. What about me?

I think I mentioned some time back that usually when I set resolutions, I end up forgetting them or not meeting them. So, this year onwards, I will do something slightly different. I will set an ongoing resolution that can be reused every year. (Hahaha lazy me)

So from now on, every year my main resolution will be:
- To live a happy life, with no regrets*

Of course, to be politically correct, all statements will have fine prints to define the boundaries and criteria etc. So here goes:
* Note: Does not, in the process, make others unhappy/suffer
* Note 2: Does not become indecisive on decision making, in fear of regret

I think that's about it. I'll add on if I think of additional things later. :P

Irony

Ever encountered a situation where you did something in order to protect someone, but end up your actions caused misunderstandings and the very person you are protecting misunderstands you?

Sucks right?

Hahaha... such is the irony of life :P

Grading Time Again

After putting off my grading for 2 years (last grading was in 2009), my sensei asked me to go for my 2nd Kyu test. Actually wasn't very confident with it, because still not familiar with all the moves, but since sensei say ok, then ok lah :P

Overall did not too bad, although towards the end didn't have enough stamina, can feel that I have went into auto pilot mode. Very weird...

Need to be more relaxed and conserve more energy. I think the beginning part I was doing quite ok. Also need to boost my stamina.

Nevertheless, not sure if I will ever have chance to go for further grading next year onwards. We'll see...

On a separate but related note, I actually bumped into a diving friend in one of the classes. Quite surprised that he has already been learning for 6 months but this is the first time I've met him in class. Small small world.

Recent Events

Past few days has been quite a lot of drama for me... now where do I start...

1) Recently went to Taipei to visit my friend there. It's a very interesting place that I have wanted to visit for the longest time but until recently, haven't done so. It's a nice and clean place, which reminds me a lot of Japan (possibly due to the fact that it was occupied by Japanese for about 50 years or so previously). Pictures can be found in Facebook. Cost of living is quite similar to KL, although the food seems a little more expensive. Liquor and cigarette (according to my friend) is very cheap though. What next? I might take up my friend's offer to have a look in Makati as well. Yet to be confirmed.

2)  Last week, it was Thanksgiving, then there was Black Friday, and followed by Cyber Monday. Reminds me of last year when I was in Toronto during the same period. Lots of good deals of electronics on these 2 days. Feels a bit nostalgic as well, thinking about the time I've spent in Toronto.

3) I got to know a girl about 2 weeks back over dinner with a few friends. Then we chatted and she told me she was going through a break up. And then I found out that her birthday is coming soon, so I decided to treat her to a birthday dinner to cheer her up. Then the whole thing took a dramatic turn, where the ex though I was the reason for the break up. He actually showed up that night because she revealed where we were. He rudely interrupted us, and probably wanted to punch me. Too bad he didn't, or he would be in a lot of trouble. Oh well, anyways in the end she decided to get back with him, so drama ends there I guess. At least the dinner was good.

4) This girl whom I chat with a lot, suddenly decided to ignore me for reasons unknown to me. Totally have no idea why or what did I do to her to deserve this. Oh well... whatever

5) Chatted with an old friend and found out he is going through a nasty divorce. Actually, I did noticed from his FB activities that something seemed not right. But I didn't wanted to ask him about it until he tell me about it himself

Joke of the day

“Why did the British wear red coats in battle?”

A long time ago, Britain and France were at war.
During one battle, the French captured a British Colonel.
They took him to their headquarters, and the French General began to question him.

Curiously, the French General asked, “Why do you British officers all wear red coats?
Don’t you know the red material makes you easier targets for us to shoot at?”

In his casual, matter-of-fact, way, the British officer informed the General that the reason British officers wear red coats is so that if they are wounded, the blood won’t show, and the men they are leading won’t panic.

And that is why, from that day forward, all French Army officers wear brown trousers.

Hehehehehehe

Yet another wedding

Last Sat, went to help out for another couple's wedding - Vic and LT. Both of them are my diver friends. Morning, the usual jip san leong stuff... bride's sister LS thought up all those games:
  1. With hands tied, use mouth to place post-its notes on specified body areas
  2. Wasabi applied on top of our lips, have to lick it. Then groom had to lick the unfinished left overs (damn disgusting... haha)
  3. Gangnam style dance (yeah... already expected)
In the afternoon, became driver to send couple to hotel. Evening, part time IT support to help play slides and videos on projector. CC was the mastermind organizer, D and LS emcees.

Event went well except minor hiccups on the alcohol supply. Very happy to see the loving couple and all the happy and happening guests.

Note: Frankly speaking, after going through so many marriages of my friends, I don't think I could do it. So much preparations has to be done... not to mention, I don't think I could find someone for myself in this lifetime.

Jip San Leong

One of my best friend got married last Sunday (although they have done their ROM few months back). So I was tasked with becoming his bestman plus hengdai for the morning "jip san leong" ceremony. Due to unforeseen circumstances, I was also tasked to be the wedding car driver since the supposed driver fell sick, not to mention back up cameraman because the cameraman almost couldn't make it due to food poisoning. So my role = bestman/hengdai/driver/backup cameraman... LOL

After some kelam kabut due to lack of planning, our departure time was delayed from 10:15am to about 11am. Then on the way to pick up the bride, we hit another snag - groom forgot to bring flowers (left it on the table at home). So one of the car had to make a u-turn to fetch it. Finally after all the unplanned incidents, we got to the hotel. Seriously, Empire's elevator is so so so slow, given that it's such a new building.

Then began our encounter with the opposition force (bride's jimui's). First thing they requested is the gangnam style dance. Oh man... seriously? I think this is gonna be like the theme for a lot of "jip san leong" challenge for some while. The other hengdai's all don't wanna do it, so no choice, I had to do it.

Next they make us all eat spicy nasi lemak with added chili padi. That was quite a joke really... they absolutely underestimated our capacity for spiciness. C'mon, regular chili padi? "Sup sup sui" lah.

Next up was pushups, and then while on the floor, use mouth to pick out some candies from a plate. Easy peasy, 2 hengdai completed the task in no time. And then they want 5 different types of notes to be stuck on a big love sign. No big deal.

Not sure if there is supposed to be another game or two... but the plan was foiled by me. As the photographer was entering the room, I blocked the door from closing, and then together with the hengdai we pushed through the door. LOL.

Finally, friend was "forced" to read out some conditions and sign the paper, and once done, mission accomplished.

Hahaha haven't been doing this for a while... quite fun indeed.

In Bangladesh

Wednesday (5th Sept)

This morning at the hotel's cafe, there was a Bangladeshi father and son sitting at the table next to mine. The father took notice of me and said hi to me. And the first question that popped out is "Are you from China?"... Hahaha that is actually kind of funny, because if I remember correctly, it is very rare for people to  ask if I'm from China. I guess I do not look as Chinese (from China anyway) as can be. The other time that I remember someone asking if I'm from China, is a China student. And that was because I emulate how they speak Mandarin, thus he was actually believing that I'm from China.

So anyway, back from the tangent, I told the guy I'm from Malaysia. And so, in a distinctively British slang, he told me that he has migrated to the UK since 30-odd years ago. And this is like his summer holiday trip back to his hometown of Chittagong (2nd largest city of Bangla, after Dhaka) where he will bring the whole family (parents, wife, kids) for a visit every year.

He said he remembered many years back when M'sia and Bangla are quite similar in economic standings (I guess that would probably be like 40 years or so ago). But now, M'sia have moved far ahead while Bangla is still struggling in a downward spiral (in his description). He attributed this to the inefficiencies and ever rampant corruption in the country. Also, the transport system is a mess, and major roads run through city centers causing massive jam (not to mention the reckless driving of the rickshaws and CNGs).

After the short chat, he bid me farewell as he had to leave for the airport early (in the crazy morning traffic) to avoid being late in catching the flight home.

**********************

Thursday (6th Sept)

Today I had lunch with a guy from the local partner here. I was kind of curious after yesterday's chat and wanted to know more about what's the situation like in this country now, so I asked him about what's going on right now.

Apparently they are going into election mode soon (Nov if I recall correctly). The bad thing about this is that everything will be on a standstill. Businesses will cease to expand for at least the next 2-3 months while waiting to see new government being formed, and what will be their directions. At the same time, the current incumbent govt is trying to pass a bill that will allow the incumbent govt to manage the electoral commission (EC) for the upcoming election.

Seems that unlike M'sia, Bangla has experienced many times of govt changing hands, and one of the reason for that is their EC has been pretty independent and transparent, being participated by people from various party. So in that sense they have some sort of check and balance in place to ensure minimal cheating on the voting process.

So from Nov onwards, he anticipated that there will be some demonstrations going on which would cause the whole country to crawl to a halt. Hopefully the project will be done by then. But anyways I should be outta there by 20th Sept.

*************************

Friday (7th Sept)

It was sort of Thursday midnight as I went to airport headed for home. In the MAS queue, there was this Malaysian Chinese senior couple right behind me. I strike up a conversation with them, and was told they have 2 textile factories here in Bangla. They invested on the first factory here since 10 years back, and the 2nd one has just completed and started to go into production.

After checked in, the auntie offered some Heong Peng to me, brought from Malaysia. She said that I could help her lighten her luggage load. Haha. Such nice people they are.

As we sat and chit chatted, they shared their insights of this place with me. I was very surprised that there is a currency control in place where you cannot carry more than 500 takas (local currency, translates to about RM20) out of the country. If found, they will just confiscate the excess money from you. Then he also told me things like there's not much tourism here, other than the Cox Bazar, so-called the longest beach in the world as claimed by the locals. But even that is not much of an interesting place because it was not well run.

To Bangladesh (part 2)

Yup, I'm in Bangladesh for about 4 days by now. So this post I'm going to talk about some first impressions and some observations of this place:

1. Much like india
Yep, first thought in my mind as I got out of the airport, is that this is so much like India. Well not surprising, being a neighbor of India. Basically dusty, polluted, constructions going on everywhere, unstable power supplies, streets filled with auto (motorized) rickshaws (normally called auto in India)... etc. Of course there are slight differences, like the autos here are called CNGs (because of the fuel they use - compressed natural gas), and you see a lot of manual rickshaws on the road (don't see that in Bangalore).

2. Loose dress code
Well being a pretty poor country, it doesn't come as a surprise dress codes are not enforced much. It is not uncommon to see white collars (I presume, lower ranking ones) wearing sandals and jeans to office.

3. Crazy traffic
If you think KL traffic is bad, wait till you see the traffic here. Roads are chaotic, everyone trying to squeeze their way through, CNGs travelling in opposite direction (ok sometimes cars too, saw one just today). And according to colleagues here, due to bad planning, most main roads cut through the city, causing massive jam  at peak hours. For example, even travelling in short distance, say 3-5km, would take 1 hour at times (ok, this is similar to Jakarta I guess). Oh before I forget, they always honks, all the time... just like India. I think they would not dare to drive if their car horns are broken.

4. Cars with bull bars
Bull bars are also commonly known as nudge bar or kangaroo bar. And you read it right, cars. Somehow they seemed to be obsessed with installing bull bars on cars, front and back. You can see some pictures of them in FB once I uploaded them. Well I guess this is kind of related to 3. The cars probably nudges and bullies the rickshaws out of the way on the road. But so far I have not witnessed it. It's either that, or they want to make sure that in case of any small accidents, the car won't get damaged.

5. Expensive
You'd be surprised that despite being a poor country, some things are pretty expensive. Hotel, transport, food etc are not cheap. The only thing that's cheap is mobile prepaid starter pack. :P Another thing related to this is a lot of people try to get money from you. In a way I guess it's not very surprising for travelers/tourists. Because I definitely stick out like a sore thumb. Beggars goes around on the streets knocking on car windows, hotel staffs trying all sorts of way to earn money from you (one fella even kept trying to pimp girls to me).

6. Lift etiquette
One observation that I find kind of interesting is their lift (elevator) etiquette. People actually queued up for lifts. I mean, who does that? Not Malaysians, not foreigners (they would give way, but not queue). Maybe it only happen in corporate offices, that I'm not too sure. Also, nobody bothers about pressing the close button of lifts. I mean, I do that a lot, just to save a few seconds instead of waiting for the door to auto close. I believe most Malaysians do that. But here, no. They just happily wait for the door to auto close.

So there you go, some of my observations about Bangladesh.

Edit:
I forgot to add one more:
7. Power connectors
This is the first place I go that almost every wall socket and power connectors I've seen are universal plugs. Only very rarely I see India plugs around. Makes it very convenient for foreign plug devices to work here. Very good idea actually.

To Bangladesh

Yup... the inevitable has happened. I'm now sitting in KLIA updating my blog while waiting for the gate to open. Bangladesh, here I come (reluctantly... hehehe). I'm having very very low expectations for this trip, so hopefully I'll be pleasantly surprised (fingers crossed)

I believe I will be there for 2 intervals of about 15 days each to make up to about a month. Reason being the visa only allowed me to stay a maximum of 15 days per visit. That hopefully would allow me to make it to my friend's wedding on the 30th Sept. That is, as long as they don't ask me to go there for the 3rd interval (fingers crossed again).

Still have about 40 minutes till gate open. Have been surfing net and stuff since an hour ago. Good thing my laptop has a battery life of 8 hours compared to my old one which lasts about 2 hours. :P

To be continued... ;)

Waterfall Trekking

Been a while since my last waterfall trekking... tomorrow will be following my friends to Lepok waterfall. It will be my first time visiting this fall. Before this I've been to other falls like Jerangkang, Perdik, Pisang... and one or two more which I've forgotten the names.

Better be getting some rest soon... need to wake up early :P

Edit:
On the way there I realized I've been to Lepok once before this. I just don't remember the name. So this is my second trip here. Much easier this time as I'm fitter, and the place was drier. The last time I was here, I slipped quite a few times on the wet muddy ground due to rain earlier. Oh and another fall I've been is Lata Khong.

Travelling Again Soon

After South Africa and Kenya failed to materialize, looks like Bangladesh will be on. Well, of course, still depends if I'm able to get the Visa done up. But I guess should be not much of an issue.

So yeah, will be going to Bangladesh for about a month (hopefully no delays) for a project. Kinda scary going to these 3rd world country. Keeping fingers crossed hoping for the best :P

01 May 2012

After some time...

here I am again, back at my blog. At one point I was so lazy that I didn't want to do any more updates, but now I've decided to revisit blogging casually, maybe even start another blog with a specific topic.

As I was fiddling with the new interface (not sure since when this was implemented), I realized that there are some new templates available, like the one you see currently (dynamic template - flipcard), which looks quite awesome.

Anyways, some updates even though you might not be interested to know. I've been doing quite a bit of travelling last year (if you've noticed from some posts back then). When I look back and made some calculations, I've spent about 8 months out of Malaysia in 2011. About 2 months was in Singapore, while another 6 was pretty much in Toronto. Kinda scary because my 2011 just zoomed by without me realizing, and suddenly it's 2012 already.

For this year (2012), so far I've spent about 1.5 months in Jakarta already. And next up I'll be going to Singapore again for about a month. Anyways I don't foresee this year to be travelling as much as last year, but I better not speak too soon. :P

Actually I'm kinda surprised with all that travelling in 2011, I still managed to squeeze in 2 dive trips to Tenggol. This year I have yet to 开斋, which is kind of worrying. Supposed to join my friend's trip in May, but now seems like I won't be able to make it because I will be in Singapore. Oh well, let's see how things go.

Also, another side effect of the travelling is that my progress in Aikido took a hit obviously, as I am not in town to join classes. I did try to join some classes in Toronto, but wasn't very consistent. I think I probably should seek out the Singapore Aikikai group and join their classes. Sometimes I do feel kind of sad when I came back and join the local classes, seeing most of my juniors surpassing me and obtaining higher rankings. But then again, I remind myself that my main purpose is to train and learn, and in fact I didn't want to progress in ranks in the beginning. So it's all good.
