Small towns in the Evergreen state

Coupeville is part of Ebey’s Landing National Historical Reserve and is the second-oldest town in Washington. It was settled in the 1850s. The town has a lovely waterfront with its historic red wharf. Many of the buildings date from the 19th century. The seafood restaurants serve locally sourced mussels.

From the town you can take a trip to Whidbey Island to explore the hiking trails..

The island has historic landmarks like the Admiralty Head Lighthouse.

Situated in the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, Artist Point is a breathtaking location. It offers views of neighboring mountains, among them the famous Mount Baker and the majestic Mount Shuksan.

Towering over the Columbia River, Beacon Rock is a giant basalt monolith. Climbers enjoy climbing it and a roundtrip trail will take you up to the rock. This climb is an exciting challenge with amazing views all around. Along the way, you can enjoy the colorful wildflowers blooming on the lower slopes.

The New Tygart Flyer is a train that visitors can take to see the surrounding mountains and forests.

Visit the Cranberry Glades Botanical Gardens, which feature such plants as cranberries, sphagnum moss, skunk cabbage, and two carnivorous plants.

The Bull Run Regional Park features the lovely Bluebell Trail, a one-and-a-half-mile loop. It is best to hike the trail when more than 25 varieties of wildflowers, among them bluebells, are in full bloom.

Burke’s Garden is located near Bluefield and at one time was home to Native American villages until German settlers arrived. The garden is also referred to as “God’s Thumbprint.” The area gets its name from the first European settler, whose potato peels supposedly turned into massive potato plants in the valley. The beautiful fertile farming land is surrounded by mountains.

About small towns

Wisconsin is known as “The Badger State.” The state has a diverse landscape with rolling hills, rocky bluffs, and forests. There are many rivers and streams and about 15,000 lakes. Wisconsin joined the Union in 1848 and features historical buildings, preserved town squares, and monuments reflecting the state’s history. The state also has a strong maritime heritage, especially along two Great Lakes—Lake Superior and Lake Michigan.

On the shores of Lake Superior is Ashland. It is one of the most historically significant small towns in Wisconsin. The has Native American roots and was a key port for French fur traders.

Downtown Ashland has tree-lined streets and historic brownstones and is a picturesque setting.

The Burlington Earth Clock is a contemporary compass, calendar, and clock that looks like a prehistoric stone circle on the shores of Lake Champlain. If someone stands in the middle and assumes the role of gnomon—the component of a sundial that casts a shadow—the shadow cast upon the ground will tell the time. With specific stones oriented in the four primary cardinal directions, the entire circle serves as a compass. Circles for Peace, a grassroots nonprofit, produced this stone circle. By aligning with the cycles and rhythms of nature, the composition seeks to assist in discovering inner peace.

The town of Afton is renowned for its hospitable arch. It is the biggest arch made of elk antlers in the world. The Call Aircraft Factory, which manufactured CallAir aircraft, had its headquarters here. You can find information about them at the CallAir Museum. The Cedar Basin Trail leads to the Periodic Springs, one of the area’s natural wonders. The springs are a phenomena, operating on an 18-minute regular operational cycle where water flows as quickly as 100 cubic feet per second.

In Huntsville, see the Blue Lagoon, two limestone quarries filled with blue-green spring water. Pine trees shade the water. It is a great place for scuba divers, who can camp overnight. Those who come just for swimming cannot stay overnight. However, you can have a great day, so pack up a picnic.

Boca Chica State Park on the Boca Chica Sub Delts of the Rio Grande River includes the Boca Chica Beach. This is a natural preserve. There are trails to hike around the park.

During the Mexican-American War, a floating bridge was built across the bay to transport medical supplies and some of it can be seen today.

You can enjoy a picnic on the beach, swim, surf, and fish. It is also a good place for birdwatching.
