I haven’t been consistent with posts mainly because I having been consistent with keeping busy. We (my husband and I) went to NYC two weeks ago for the weekend. We had drinks at McGee’s Pub & Restaurant. This amazing pub is the inspiration for McLaren’s on How I Met Your Mother. Obviously we ordered drinks from the special HIMYM inspired menu and OBVIOUSLY I bought a HIMYM shirt. Overall, it was the best pub ever and I wish we had stayed there longer. Are we seriously considering going back next year for the series finale of HIMYM to hopefully meet the cast? We are.
We went to a couple of other bars for happy hour. We were so caught up in the fact that we could enjoy some delish beverages without worrying about how we were going to get home that we almost forgot to eat dinner. We ate a late dinner at the Mermaid Inn. The reviews I read online said that the lobster sandwiches were incredible. We both ordered one. The sandwiches were good, but not as good as I expected for the price ($28 per sammy!). The fries were delicious though.. and I consider myself a french fry connoisseur (unfortunately). The service was slow and our server was a bit arrogant. I would like to return for happy hour but would never return for dinner.
We went to Eataly and Chelsea Market. Both places were incredible. We didn’t spend a lot of time at either place, so next time we go both will be at the top of our list. We walked to the Hester Street Fair. Call me crazy, but I thought it’d be bigger. It was a cute LITTLE street fair that you should check out if you’re nearby but it is definitely not worth a long walk.
We attempted to walk through China Town and Little Italy but there was some weird parade going on and an abundance of really really really old people and children. We wanted to sit down for lunch and have pizza and wine and eventually landed at Novella Ristorante in Little Italy. This place was darling and had a cool lunch special- $14 for pizza (or pasta, a panini, or a salad) and a glass of wine (or soda). The options are slim and you only can get their house wine but it was all delicious anyways. We shared “rice balls”. I know there is a correct name for these things but I forgot.
Saturday night we went to see Annie: The Musical starring JANE LYNCH!!! As I said (bragged) in a previous post, my amazing husband bought me the tickets for a birthday gift. The show was on Broadway and was packed with couples, friends, and families. I was just as excited as all the little girls, obviously. The show was incredible. Jane was unbelievable, as expected, and Annie along with “the orphans” were remarkable. I wish I could see this show over and over and over again!
Sunday morning we went to Philip Marie for brunch. This place was recommended to me by a friend and I am SO SO happy we tried it! Apparently we are crazy though.. we got there before noon and intended on ordering a drink. We are finding out that most places don’t serve alcohol before noon. Bummer. Anyways, I had the baby shrimp burrito and husband had the mahi mahi fish and chips. Everything was delicious and super reasonably priced. Next time we’re in the city we will for sure be there for the unlimited mimosa brunch!
We ended our getaway with a trip to Anthropologie to collect more of the coffee mugs I am obsessed with.
After a quick trip to IKEA to browse and of course make sure the husband got to eat his share of Swedish meatballs, we headed home.
New York is so busy, smelly, and dirty, but I love it. I love the lights, sounds, and people. I love that there is always something to do and you don’t have to drive everywhere. I could totally see us living there. I mean, c’mon, we all know I’m obsessed with brunch and brunch is EVERY WHERE in the city..
