Quantifying Through Art

August 27, 2009

I heard Chris Jordan speak a few weeks ago. His work is sobering. He's a photographer who turns global issues into art to tell stories. I won't do what he does justice, so take some time and wander through his website.

Here's an example:

This is 8×11 feet, in three vertical panels and depicts 2.4 million pieces of plastic, equal to the estimated number of pounds of plastic pollution that enter the world's oceans every hour. All of the plastic in this image was collected from the Pacific Ocean.

Detail:

More of his work can be found here.

Giant Turd on the Loose!

August 13, 2008

Hee hee hee.

In international art news today: A giant inflatable dog turd created by the American artist Paul McCarthy was blown from its moorings at a Swiss museum, bringing down a power line and breaking a window before landing in the grounds of a children's home.

Full story here. Picture of the Turd at rest here.

That's right, you have to go click on the turd picture yourself. I'm not posting that kind of crap on this blog.

My New Avatar

January 23, 2008

Just a word about my new avatar, since I now will be probably be confused with our dear Little Miao.

If you don't see it at first - take a second look. It's not in Chinese, it just looks like it is.

Amy

From the artis Xu Bing and one of his projects. He had his word art exhibit at the Arizona Museum for Youth recently. I sat down at a computer, typed in my name, and this is what came out.

I gave a copy of this to MomH and she's working on a quilted wallhanging for me. My nieces were curious about it and she asked them what it said. They protested that they couldn't read Chinese. Mom told them to look again. So they did and they realized it was actually my name.

Checking In

December 18, 2007

I thought I had better post something to get that damn Christmas song/atrocity off the top of my blog.

I dropped Elvis off at the vet this morning so he can get his glucose curve done today. Poor kitty. When I dropped him off, there was an obnoxious yappy dog in the waiting room, skittering around on the tiles and letting loose with high-pitched whine-barks. Gah. I wanted to give that dog a reason to be at the vet, if you know what I mean. It was getting on my nerves, not to mention setting off my cat-mom-protection-instinct.

He gets released any time after 4:00 p.m., so I'll shoot out of work a little early. I've been slammed here, but that's a good (and fun!) thing. Today is also my performance review so I'm hoping for a decent raise. *crosses fingers*

Hmm, what else? I'm all set with cat-sitting while I'm gone for Christmas. My neighbor came over to practice giving Elvis shots, so that's cool. As his back-up, my friend referred me to her Crazy Cat Lady co-worker who is more than happy to help out. She came over on Sunday to meet us and I'm feeling really good about it. Yay!

I ran five miles on Sunday! w00t! The last half mile was killer – my legs were giving out before my lungs did, so that's a good sign. I'm slowly working my way up to the seven I'm shooting for before the Big Race (2/29-3/1). Actually, since I'll be going 14.5 total, I'd like to be able to get to 8 miles by then.

No one can send me anymore Christmas cards because I did all I'm doing last night and I ran out of stamps. Plus, I've run out of time. So that's settled.

Tomorrow is our Christmas concert, some fun stuff on the program.

Not much else to report. I fly home to see the FamilyH on Saturday and I hope to meet up with many of my way cool Michigan friends while I'm there. Which reminds me, I need to send emails and let people know I'll be around.

Oh – remember the beaded cat I commissioned? Elvis II is ready to go, I take ownership of him on Friday. I saw him when he was half done and he was soooo cool. I've seen the artist's work in a few galleries around town and I must say, she's giving me a great deal on the price. She is amazing. I'll put up pictures when I have them, along with some description of the beads and beadwork patterns.

That's all for now, peeps! Stay warm!

Vox Hunt: Coffee Table Book

August 21, 2007

Book:  Show us a great coffee table book.

This is a bit self serving, because my organization is involved with this, but I just have to share it. The publication, Phoenix: 21st Century City celebrates the art, architecture and design happening here in the Valley of the Sun, against a backdrop of rapid growth and a desert landscape.

If you think we're all a bunch of retirees playing golf, we have some surprises in store. Here is the cover shot in the middle of some of the pages and another page excerpt shot.

We worked with Edward Booth-Clibborn, a publisher of fine arts book to make Phoenix the fourth in a series of emerging cities for creative professionals. It's a beautiful book and one we are quite proud of. The mayor has even lifted the cover design and text for his State of the City address. I think he owes us some royalties. 🙂

In Honor of Elvis

March 30, 2007

If the Silver Lemon stops sucking money out of my checking account long enough to save up some fun money*, I'm going to commission a piece of art. I know Ron Burns and he and his wife are super people, but I can't afford him. Ever. Unless I win the lottery. He has a cow painting I desire, but it's $9,000 and I can buy a real cow for that. If I had the money and I wanted a cow, that is. I can visit them at home for a lot less.

But I digress. I've worked with a lovely bead artist here in town who has studied beads for their cultural significance and meaning. She is simply amazing. I was looking over her portfolio to commission her for a fun project for a board memeber and I went nuts for her small animals. So I told her how it would mean so much to me if I had something to remember my cat by. She said she would come and visit to meet Elvis and work something up that I can afford.

Here is a sample of her work. This is Nigel. Nigel the real cat loves to sit on the microwave and watch food spin around inside. Take a close look at the detail.

I love the artistic representation and whimsy. I even passed up my ritual of Clinique Bonus Week and suits on clearance at Macy's to help in my quest.

*Vacation money does not count as fun money. That is a standard savings 'pile' as my trips are vital to my existence. 🙂
