Remember that scene in "About Schmidt" when Jack Nicholson sees all his work piled up to go to storage/be destroyed? That's kind of how it feels in the office today. Five years of work going in the recycling bin and the shredder. And a lot of it was really great stuff, too.
Then yesterday I see this news bit on how my university, Michigan State, is promoting the new art museum as a catalyst for economic revitalization for Mid-Michigan. It gives me hope that someone out there gets it.
Just not here. Our state leaders are too busy dismantling anything that makes Arizona a worthwhile place to live – no arts, no state parks, no access to health care for the poor, babies and elderly, even less funding for education (if that's even possible).
Kind of like what ol' Pol Pot wanted to do with Year Zero ("the return of Cambodia to a peasant economy in which there would be no class divisions, no money, no books, no schools, no hospitals"), but without the genocide. For now. With some of leadership we have in place and the rabid right wingers running around, I'm sure they are trying to figure out how to destroy the intelligentsia.
Despite all the gloominess of above, I'm having a better day than yesterday. I've been stressed out of my mind and I haven't been able to figure out why. I'll be financially secure for a while, so nothing to worry about there. I should be able to buy some kind of health care coverage at a decent price, I have a lot of wonderful people offering moral support – it's going to be just fine. I just feel really scattered these days. Very unfocused.
My old boss picked apart my resume yesterday so I need to knuckle down on that. Again. I know I'll need to always be tweaking and testing it.
I bought a ticket to Wisconsin to visit Gram. So far I have trips planned to Montreal/Ottawa (w00t! PeepMeet!), Wisconsin and Rio.
You know what? Brazil is really hard to get into. Communist China is practically wide open to Westerners compared to the hoops we need to jump through to get our Brazilian visas. Cambodia was a cakewalk, even! Miss K and I will be flying to LA in a few weeks to present our passports in person, that's after we're able to get an 'interview' scheduled which we'll try to set up on Monday. Then we have to present between 9-12 on some day at the consulate, then we'll need to go back for something else. I don't know. She's in charge of this trip so I'm just doing what she tells me.
Hey, Brazil! You want our money or not?! Pffft!
Okay, that's enough rambling. I need to get back to throwing away all my work. (Of course, I'm keeping the good stuff). I'm decked out in Green & White today for the MSU game later on. I have an MSU shirt that's subtle, so I'm not running around with a big Sparty head on my chest. All my jewelry is green and white, as are my shoes. Green purse and I'm ready to go. It works out that clean-out-the-office day is today so I can be uber-casual.
GO STATE!
In other news, Fabulous Co-Worker has already found a new job. His PTO will carry him through the 31st so he can still get his severance AND a new paycheck. Huzzah!
I suppose I should finally get around to doing my list, now that I'm a week and a half late. I also suppose I should go back to see what I wanted to accomplish.
Let's say these, because I did do them when I said would, but they never stay done: Vacuum
Iron
Clean Kitchen Table
The last few weeks were nutso busy, even for me. This is a pretty quiet week. I have rehearsal tonight, going to the First Friday Art Walk (it's killer, you should come out for it sometime) and to the bar Saturday morning for the Michigan State v Michigan game.
I just may GO GREEN! all the way and ride the bus, since the bar is walking distance from the bus line that is also walking distance from my abode. That means I'd have to be on the bus by 7:30 to get there by 8:45. Or I could drive and leave my house at 8:15 and get there at the same time. See why we don't ride the bus out here? But it would give me a chance to catch up on all my reading. So that's a plus.
We'll see. If I do the bus, then I can stop on the way back, pick up the local shuttle bus circulator and go to the Tempe Oktoberfest. Then I can drink all afternoon and take the bus back home. That's thinking ahead, I tell you what.
What else? Oh yeah, my list.
1. Clean all the stuff off the piano. It's the kitchen table overflow area.
2. Fix guest bathroom toilet. I came home from Safford to find a pool of water in the guest bathroom. Glad I went in there – every since Elvis left I have no reason to go into his bathroom. I shut off the water and drained the commode. That's as far as I got. I'm not having guests for – wait, I'm hosting book club in two weeks. Good thing I'm putting it on my list! I don't know if it's from where the water lines attach or somewhere else.
3. Dust. We can dust every day out here in the desert. I don't, but could.
4. Work out. I'm doing pretty good this week. Let's hope I can keep it up.
5. Write a letter to Grams. She's doing great in Wisconsin. Yay!
6. Write a letter to soon to-be-departed colleague. A wonderful guy here in town accepted a job as an arts center director in Calgary. You Canadians will love him. We'll miss him terribly.
7. Read two magazines. They are taking over my house. Yikes.
That's enough for me. I think I'm doing other things this weekend but I can't remember.
I'm feeling pretty good for a Monday. I woke up early and ran three miles to start making up for all the Mexican food, margaritas and kettle corn I ate this weekend while at the Safford Salsa Fest. It was a good time, but there wasn't much to do in the evenings. Just a little town. Check out my previous posts for pictures, especially of my surprise ride in a hot air balloon. THAT made my weekend.
I really need to get back to the grind, so here are a few blips from my brain.
The Lions were the lone bright spot in my weekend of football. Michigan State lost to Wisconsin, Michigan beat Indiana and ASU lost to the Georgia Trashers (it looks like they tried to clean up a little more this weekend, but I'm still disturbed, espeche with the public urination AND defecation. Eew.). Then the Cardinals stunk it up on national TV against the Colts. It's almost as if the Lions victory sucked all the good mojo out of the universe and there wasn't any left over for the other teams I care about. I'll call it a sacrifice and be good with it.
State plays Michigan this Saturday. I wonder if I'll see Michigan Guy at the bar our alumni groups share. That will be interesting since we haven't had contact since our date last week, which went well until he got weird at the very end. That's the second time I've been out with someone, it all goes well and then all of a sudden in the middle of a story he is telling, he abruptly calls the date over. Huh.
Oh well, I decided to turn my matches back on at eHarmony so we'll see what this new crop of guys looks like.
I'll do a Rear in Gear list today now that Cranky is back. I used her vacation as an excuse to not do my to-do list. Also, my week was a scheduling nightmare and I was under a lot of pressure so didn't have time to do anything anyway.
Gotta run. Hope everyone has a great day!
GO GREEN!!
Could I possibly be more excited about tonight's game? None. None more excited.
Unfortunately, I'm going to be stuck in a car with my boss and others on the way back from a meeting in Northern Arizona. Fine, I'll listen on the radio, right? Probably not. There are some in car who either do not like sports or having the radio on. CURSES!!!
Maybe this is my punishment for saying I'm skipping church for Lent in order to follow the tournament action. Sorry about that, God. (UPDATE – A friend sent me an email saying God responded to everyone's GO GREEN! with a big GO WHITE! snowfall in Michigan today. LOL!)
I can only hope some of the same action from Saturday will happen again tonight. Did you see the Darrell Summers dunk over Robinson, who is 5 inches taller than Summers? Summers has serious hang time and an unbelievable vertical leap. After the dunk, the place was shaking like an earthquake hit Ford Field. Awesome.
For some sentimental reading of the meta story of MSU playing in its home state and economically ravaged Detroit, no one does schmaltz better than the Detroit Free Press' own Mitch Albom.
Go get 'em, Spartans. I'll be with you in spirit if nothing else.
GO GREEN! GO WHITE! GO STATE! FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT!
It's St. Patrick's Day, so you know what that means… Show us something green.
Instead of proving that I bleed green for my beloved alma mater, I will instead present to you the 2009 Big Ten Player of the Year, Mr. Kalin Lucas.
May your swiftness and skill take you and the team all the way to Detroit for the Final Four.
Godspeed, young man.
GO STATE!
This time with pictures!
Brother Steve and I had a fantastic time in San Francisco this past weekend. He was decked out in Michigan State gear when we went to my favorite SFO Irish Pub Friday night. Johnny Foley's. I seem to always forget the name but never its location. Tons of other people were wearing the green and white as well so we were making friends all over the place. Good times!
Tourists were pretty sparse early Saturday morning, so we hopped the Powell/Hyde trolley to Lombard Street and on to Fisherman's Wharf. At the Wharf we took the harbour tour, checked out the aquarium and toured the Boudin Sourdough demonstration bakery and had lunch. Yum!
After our yummy lunch of soup in authentic San Fran sourdough, we were off to the Michigan State/Cal football game over in Berkeley. On the BART were plenty of young Cal fans drinking beers out of brown paper bags. Yeah, because now no one knows what you are doing. Ha ha.
As a casual observer, I've always been curious as to why you go to class at "Berkeley" but all the athletic teams are called "Cal". It's like they don't want anything to do with the other. Once we passed through the beautiful campus and up to the stadium, it became clear that they don't. It was obvious that the university puts more time and money into academics than athletic facilities, despite what the hippies living in the trees think. (We never did see the Tree Hippies, much to Steve's disappointment).
The stadium is built on the side of a hill, with free seats to be had above on the hill for the hardy souls who climbed that far up. The restroom facilities were fleets of porta-potties circling the stadium and the bleachers were tired old wooden planks. The media booth looked like the one across the street at the high school and had a couple of pop-up shade tents for some overflow.
Despite the lack of rudimentary amenities, we lost. State played like crap. But the MSU fans were out in full force and we were a loud bunch. Everyone was really nice to Steve and I on the way back, so that was nice. Oh, and the halftime show had parachuters, which was pretty cool.
It was also pretty cool to get evacuation instructions over the public address system in case of earthquake. Steve wondered what the NCAA game rulings are if you had to call it by earthquake. Will you have had to play through halftime for the game to be considered done? Through the third quarter?
Sunday: Strolled through Chinatown where I bought some tea and trinkets. Then off to Alcatraz with the LTs! We had a great time, despite that look on my face in jail where I was trying to tell Steve how to work the camera.
Monday morning: Steve took off, I slept in. Then I took myself to breakfast in North Beach, hanging out at Cafe Trieste just like all the beat poets used to do. I made my way up Telegraph Hill to the Coit Tower and was happily surprised to see there was a bus! It was a nice little workout up, but I was glad to know I could get a ride down. Whee!
Then the most darling Electric Firefly swung by the hotel to pick me up and we were off to lunch and browsing in the Mission. I can NOT believe I didn't get a picture of us! Sorry, EF!
And Laurie – you might know about this place already, but there is a pirate shop on Valencia! Proceeds fund – of all things – a writers workshop!
So there ya go. A good time was had by all yet again in the great City by the Bay.
What shows are you looking forward to in the new fall TV season?
Other than the Simpsons, which is a given, that would be none.
The only other shows I may be caught watching are College Game Day on autumn Saturdays and the Road to the Final Four, or whatever they call college hoops coverage. Plus I like to check in on Tempe Channel 11 to see what the city council is up to.
I'm getting increasingly peeved by most of the sports getting moved over to premium cable. I'll be damned if I pay oodles of money for more crap I won't watch. That's why you'll find me at the bar when a Michigan State game is on. Watching sports is more fun in a crowd, anyway. And I like Blue Moon from the tap. And nachos. Yum.
As soon as my TV becomes obsolete with the new digital/HD/whatever transmissions in a few years, I'll probaby drop all viewing rather than by a new set. Good thing I finally ponied up $50 for a DVD player.
I still don't have my voice back. Michigan State hockey won the National Championship yesterday. As much as I love football and basketball, my heart has always been with the hockey team.
MSU was down 1-0 going into the third period. Things were looking glum but the team never gave up. Neither did our group of alums, chanting "Go Green! Go White!" a thousand miles away. MSU ties it up and then with 18.9 seconds left, scores the go ahead goal. Boston College pulls their goalie and State scores with 1.7 seconds left and the team goes nuts.
In a real show of class, BC coach Jerry York tells the refs to run out the clock and let the Spartans have their moment. Thanks, Coach York.
The crowd was definitely pro-State. Maine folks, North Dakota folks – everyone seemed to be pulling for the Green & White. Everyone loves an underdog. Or everyone hates Boston College.
The State goalie, Jeff Lerg, is 5'6". He's a foot shorter than most of the goalies he faces. Way to go, Lergie.
Here's what Rick Comley, out from the shadows of legendary MSU coach Ron Mason (now athletic director) said of the team:
"We know we're not fancy, and we know we're not picked by anybody to win anything, but what a great, great group of kids," Coach Comley said. "And they deserve this. One thing those kids have always wanted is to be proud to be a Spartan. They want so badly to walk around with their head high, and to represent the program in that locker room, and now they're going home with a national championship. I couldn't be prouder of them."
Me, too. Thank you, boys. Great job.
Go State!
St. Patrick's Day: Show us if you wore green or got a pinch.
I'm cheating on this picture, as I'd rather post this picture of my brothers and me, some 30 years after this picture was taken. But we are all in green, so that counts.
From left to right: Me, Brother Ray, Brother Steve. Brother Steve turns 40 today. Happy Birthday, Steve!
We ended up losing the game in the final minutes and Brother Ray said, "Well, Aim. You aren't allowed to come home anymore". Brother Steve said, "You can still come home, you just can't come to anymore football games."
You see, the year before I went home for MSU v Notre Dame – and we lost in the final minutes. I apparently am very bad luck.
I do, however, love seeing, "Michigan: 0" on the scoreboard behind us.
