And Now For Something Completely Different

November 19, 2009

I don't know if all these files will come through – or if you are even remotely interested – but I was sending one of the tunes out to some of my band friends and thought I may as well post it here.

Our next concert will feature guest trumpet soloist Joe Burgstaller, who has played with the world-renowned Canadian Brass. He was listening in via Skype from New York City and I must say, I thought he was pretty darn cute. Now that's something to look forward to. I must also say, his stand-in/trumpet-double for the evening was no slouch. Anthony Something-Something, ASU music student from Mexico City was fantastic. Wow. I love being around great music.

This is one of the pieces we'll be playing. It's an arrangement for brass band and has Vincent DiMartino on trumpet when he was a professor at U of Kentucky. I was stage crew for one of the Brass Band of Battle Creek concerts back in my college days and was astounded. At the time (not sure how it's made up now), it was a group of college and other music professionals/educators from around the Midwest started by the director of the Michigan State school of music.

Just for fun, because now I have it stuck in my head after listening to it in my car, is a medley of classic Disney tunes. It's long, but stick around to the end for some kickin' renditions of songs from my favorite childhood movie soundtrack: The Jungle Book. I listened to that album on a near-constant basis for a very long time. I should pick up a CD of it one of these days.

Rocktober 5, 2009

October 5, 2009

Not sure if this falls under "RAWK!", but it's a fun tune none-the-less. Whatever happened to Macy Gray, anyway? Is she even still recording? I don't pay much attention to bands these days and what they are up to. I hear music, if I like it I buy it, but I don't memorize the biographies of band members like I did for Huey Lewis & The News.

Rocktober Days 2 & 3

October 2, 2009

It's past midnight in the Eastern and Central time zones, so this will count for my tomorrow's entry. I have a 7:30 am meeting (oof) and then I have to go to Tucson for a lunch meeting, then I'll be hitting the First Friday art walk tomorrow night in downtown PHX. Then Saturday is the MSU v UMAA (U of Michigan @ Ann Arbor) game followed by Oktoberfest.

So this post has two songs because I may not get around to posting again until Sunday at the earliest. Unless I drunk post, which is always a possibility.

One song is a repeat, so I hope that's okay.

Next up on the AmyH Ska Punk Rockin' Funk Collection: Ben Folds Five.

Song #3: Reel Big Fish

Have a good one, kiddos!

Rocktober & Randomosity (Take 2)

October 1, 2009

I don't know what the hell is going on with my computer, but the first time I tried to post – and I made it all the way to the end, it kept jumping to a different interwebs tab. Then it eated the entire post. Aargh!

Anyway, let's see if I can do this all over again.

Screw it – I'll condense. I spent too much time already and I'm hungry and frustrated.

I'm going to play with Val, Cappy and Hotrod this year for their annual Rocktober Festivities. I may not have a lot of what they might consider RAWK!!11!, but I'll have fun with it. What are they going to do? Kick me out of the club? I'll start my own. So there.

I decided to start off easy (for me) and go through all the tunage on the AmyH Ska Punk Rockin' Funk Collection. Yes, that's what it's called. When I run out of songs, I'll see what I have worthwhile on Amy's Dance Party. Not really dance music, the title just cracked me up.

Without further ado, here's the first song from the AHSPRFC: The Presidents of the United States of America.

I promised randomosity, so here goes.

Did you I tell you I'm hiking the Grand Canyon in November? That's right, mofos – I'll be hiking in and staying here for two nights before hauling myself back out:

The beauty is we're staying in a cabin so I don't have to haul around a sleeping bag and other such gear. We'll even be fed while we're there. That's what I call roughing it! I've been running the bleachers at the track so I can get my Rear in Gear This Year literally, not just figuratively.

My allergies are so bad my head is all fuzzy. I think I had other things to say but I forgot them already.

ROCK ON! w00t!

Two of My Favorite Things

June 27, 2008

Beer and music. A little fun for your Friday.

This reminds me of a small concert held here in town in an art gallery. It was a chamber music concert that featured a contemporary piece that incorporated the sound made by rubbing your finger on a crystal glass. The organizer went through the glass collections of all the Phoenix Symphony members, thrift stores and other places to get all the varying pitches he needed.

The entire show was incredible, but that was mesmerizing.

Music Library Grab Bag

June 11, 2008

Once again, I closed my eyes and grabbed a CD from the pile Brother Steve gave me at Christmas. Once again, I have a new Favorite Band of the Moment (FBotM).

So far he's scored this year with: Lilly Allen, Lo-Fidelity All-Stars and The New Pr0nographers. Previous finds include Southern Culture on the Skids. I had to throw them in there just for kicks.

Without further ado, I give you the Kaiser Chiefs. (Once again, pretend the cover image is attached to the sound clip).

Green Plastic West Virginia Truckstop Cowboy Hat

November 30, 2007

No, that's not another line from Email Spam Poetry (although it could have been). It's one of my favorite lines in all of music, from the band Southern Culture on the Skids on its album "Plastic Seat Sweat".

I've been meaning to post it for a while and since one of Dancing Bear's littlest relatives was wearing a green plastic cowboy hat for Thanksgiving, I couldn't wait a minute longer.

(While I'm finally able to post music from home [w00t!], I'm still not going to figure out how to do the album cover trick just yet.)

This is the closest thing to country music I will listen to. Ha! That doesn't count Bluegrass, which is something else altogether and a music form I adore. (Just needed to qualify a little bit).

It’s Time to Love Your Monkey

November 15, 2007

That's a line from one of my fave songs from the rockin' band, Eagles of Death Metal. Okay, maybe it's all about the monkey. Anyhoo, the group is a lot of fun, although the sound doesn't change much from this album to the next so I only have Peace Love Death Metal.

(I don't know how to do the fancy album cover/song mesh, and don't have the patience to figure it out. :-P)

QotD: Music Festivals

September 26, 2007

Out of all the music festivals this year, which were the coolest?  Did you travel to attend any of them?

Three days of blues music and beer tastings in one of the most stunning settings in the West. Could it get better? If it does, I'd love to see it.

I didn't go this year, but I've gone in the past. A six-seven hour drive from Phoenix through the Navajo Reservation, a little longer if you make a sidetrip through Monument Valley (highly recommended).

Silly Song Wednesday

August 8, 2007

A friend sent this to me after he heard it on his "All Songs Considered" NPR podcast.

"Apparently, it’s from some bizarre show on HBO involving a group from New Zealand."

Since I don't have an mp3 player (gasp!) or cable (double gasp!!) I depend on my more connected friends to find these gems for me.

It's possible the song is NSFW, if only because you may end up laughing out loud like I did and then needing to explain why to your curious co-workers.

BONUS! There's a video of it -

if that's what you're into…
