I'm running on over 36 hours of being awake with a 14+ hour travel time. I'm tired. That said, I need to stay up a little while longer so I can get back on a real schedule.
So here are some photos and I'll do my best to say some things about stuff. Okay, first off the city is in a spectacular physical location. Beautiful mountains everywhere, amazing beaches and views. But architecturally and city-planning wise, I give it a 4 out of 10 stars. Buildings are put up where there is level land, except where the favelas creep up the hillsides.
However, the sidewalks are great, even if they can be dangerous. It's all mosaic stonework, with each area having a different design. Here is Ipanema beach:
Another thing Rio is known for is the wide distance between the haves (view from where we were staying with friends):
and the have-nots. This is the closest we were to one of the famous favelas, the shanty towns overseen by drug lords and where the people live in poverty. But one thing I'll say, is some of these favelas have million dollar views.
No trip to Rio is complete without a trip up Sugarloaf for the views:
The Christo statue was closed for up close viewing – he's undergoing some repairs. From Sugarloaf you can see him overlooking Rio.
The other thing no trip to Rio is complete without is time at the beach. We spend most of our time on Ipanema. Copa can be kind of sketchy these days.
This guy was the best salesman ever. I've been wanting one of these purses but the Fair Trade shops sell them for a lot of money. Because we bought two, we paid around $8 each for them. I apologize for the side view – I'm just happy I figured out video on my camera:
After a day of lounging and beach vendor shopping, we topped off with a cold beer. Cariocas (the name the locals give themselves) are not big fans of the Iranian leader.
I have photos of the food market but I don't want to push my luck with the file size. Enjoy!
