A Jellycat Curling Stone. Brilliant!

A “Flying Rat” with Jellycat

“Strutton Pigeon is a one-bird clean-up crew. Every dawn, he’s out with his litter-picker and hi-vis vest (self-issued), tidying the pavements, riverbanks, and anywhere that needs it.

He’s a volunteer through and through – part civic pride, part unlimited energy. He’s even petitioning for a composting initiative!

When the day’s work is done, you’ll find him perched by the canal, preening his feathers and admiring the view. Now, if only Amuseables Peanut would stop dropping crisp crumbs…”

That’s one way to look at a FLYING RAT!

Image

“Flying rat” is a common, often derogatory, nickname for urban pigeons (Columba livia), due to their scavenging behavior, tendency to nest in buildings, and potential to carry diseases via droppings. Considered vermin in many cities, they are actually highly adaptable, intelligent, and historically significant birds.
Key details regarding the “flying rat” nickname:
    • Why they are called this: Pigeons are seen as pests that clutter cities, create loud noises, and spread diseases through their droppings, which can contain bacteria, fungi, and parasites.
    • Behavior: They are urban foragers known to peck at trash and scraps on the ground.
    • Origin: While often despised, they are descendants of domesticated rock doves and have been part of human civilization for thousands of years
    • Scientific Value: Despite their negative reputation, they have been studied for their remarkable navigation abilities and were even used in military history for communication.

The mittens were Golden!

Image

dievca was wearing her Team USA mittens yesterday.  They turned out to be the lucky mittens with the USA winning Olympic Gold in Women’s Singles Figure Skating and Women’s Hockey!  Fun events to watch, too!  Maybe the next Winter Olympics – dievca will wear them for 14 days~

Getting ready for the Lunar New Year! Feb. 17, 2026

Image

Why is it the Year of the Horse?

Incredibly complex, the Chinese zodiac calendar is best described as a 12-year cycle represented by 12 animals, in this order: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig.

Your personal zodiac animal sign is determined by your year of birth, meaning 2026 will welcome plenty of baby Horses. Children born in the last lunar calendar year were Snakes, while those born on or after the Lunar New Year in 2027 will be Goats, and so on.

And every year, a heavenly stem (one of five elements, which fall into the yin or yang category) is paired with an earthly branch (one of the 12 Chinese zodiac animals). This year, the heavenly stem is “Bing” (big sun) and the earthly branch is “Wu” (the Horse), making it the Year of the Fire Horse.

Followers believe that for each Chinese zodiac sign, luck will depend largely on the positions of the Tai Sui — a collective name for the stellar deities thought to rotate parallel to and in the opposite direction of Jupiter.

Its a particularly lucky YEAR for:

  • Sheep
  • Horse
  • Tiger
  • Dog

What works for EVERYONE:

The Year of the Horse asks for momentum over hesitation, instinct rather than overthinking. We’re asked to have the courage to charge headfirst towards our innermost desires. Visibility, movement, and pioneering are rewarded.

  • Listen to your inner knowing immediately. This year asks you to embody swift, free-spirited movement. Over-strategizing or planning your next steps takes away from its magic. Horses thrive on speed, energizing activity, and bold moves. Say yes, be the first, respond promptly, and don’t wait to take the initiative.
  • Take up space. Visibility is vital during the year ahead. Don’t shrink the shadows. Dare to be seen in all your glory, imperfections and all. Those who dare to embody the spotlight, share their skills, and believe in their abilities thrive. The more open you are, the more doors open.
  • Follow your full body “yes”. If you feel your body energized, excited, and passionate about something, your instincts are activated. Pay close mind. The year of the Horse asks you to move with purposeful energy. Take it as a sign that you’re aligned and should take action.

Pick-Me-Up with Missoni

Image

“pick-me-up” (as one word) is the classic term for a mood/energy booster.

Missoni’s backpack has been crochet-knitted in Italy with colourful zigzag stripes, so it’s instantly recognisable. Made from wool and durable nylon, it has plenty of pockets for organising the essentials and a compartment for your laptop.
100% Wool MSRP $1120
dievca was looking for a little “pick-me-up” after the work project.  she ran into this 2023 Missoni backpack on the HousingWorks eShop site for $350. she also had a 30% off coupon code.  The backpack is in amazing shape and taking the edge off of enduring the cold weather in NYC.

How the Mornings go ~

7:07 am: Watch the sunrise on the beach, walk to get coffee, head to the pool for 30 min of water works/treading water, shower, then focus on the work project in the shade for however long.

Packing for FL (very casual)

dievca has to pound through a large project, she doesn’t need to be in NYC. Hopefully, she will make it out of the City before a storm hits the area.

The weather forecast in FL:

It looks like layers will be necessary – here’s the start:

Wearing the Funnel Neck Jacket

Recycled, Sold, Gifted in 2026

dievca recycled 5 vibrators and other toy items, 12 pair of Patagonia Underwear @ the Patagonia store, and a number of cotton and wool items including a small wool rug @ Trashie.

The great Holiday Tinsel Headband was given to a friend who admired it and was going to a party.  she needed it more than dievca did 😘  Add the riddance of annoying feathers from two decorative pillows (not down – pokey feathers). They went into the composting bin. Apparently feathers are good for composting – something about nitrogen.

dievca’s eBay store was “hopping” over Christmas break, 18 items sold – it was something dievca could handle while she was sick.  The photos above include the sold pieces that have been seen on the blog.

Is anyone else having a clear out?

Practicalities – recycling vibrators in the New Year

Image

In 2025, dievca casually mentioned that she and Master were testing all of their vibrators and toys to see which ones were of interest or a disaster. There were clear winners and some losers.   Some winners needed a solid charging from being in storage or new batteries, Currently, dievca has vibrators plugged in all over her apartment.  she’s determining which of the good vibrators still hold charge.

Master just laughed when dievca told him what she was doing on Jan. 2nd of the new year.  Look, she wants/needs to recycle the losers and the ones that don’t a hold charge – small NYC apartment.

It’ll be fun in a couple of hours when she does some testing. XO

Stylin’ while Sick

Image

LeLe Sadoughi Chicago Winter Hat (ShopBop on sale)

dievca is sick. she needed to sleep in, but she also needed to schlep out to NJ for grocery shopping.  Let’s just say she slid in and slid out as fast as possible at 6 am with her Chicago Hat on. Why? No Orphan’s Christmas Eve this year – an Orphan’s Christmas Breakfast instead…

dievca’s motto? keep it simple:

  • Scrambled Eggs
  • Baked Ham
  • Bagels
  • Fruit Salad
  • Water, Orange Juice, Coffee and Tea

Now she’s back after a 2.5 hour nap and looking to fully clean the apartment in the next three days. Yeah~

Look – dievca will heal and da ‘Bears won! Breakfast will be fine. XO

$20 well spent at Urban Outfitters

Image

Urban Outfitters Tinsel Headband $20

Master laughed when dievca presented in the nude with only the Urban Outfitters tinsel headband on.  Apparently it made an engaging picture during fellatio.

dievca just checked – the colored version and the silver version are both sold out.

Bummer – XO

the 2025 Torrance, CA Marshall’s haul

dievca had good luck in 2024 while shopping in Torrance, CA. This year, she was feeling the “red tags” and practical options with her purchases:

Red Tag items:

  • Hello Kitty Make-Up Mirror with light and magnification $12 (for those of us who need help seeing)
  • Camila Coelho Navy Fur Collar Zip Vest $32 (surprisingly flattering)
  • Levi’s Grey Cotton Utility Jacket $45 (for Master, or dievca a classic)
  • “da Bears” Chicago NFL Rhinestone colossal Tumbler $28 (It’s so tacky its GREAT)
  • House of Harlow 1960 Fleece / Wool mittens $14 (cozy)
  • Joe’s Coffee Donut Shop blend $5 (needed)

Not red-tagged:

  • Better Homes & Garden Two Cotton Reversible bath rugs $9.99 each (hard to find smaller size)
  • Jason Wu 100% Cashmere grey hoodie $99.99 (cozy)
  • Nivea Roll-on deodorant – two packs of 2 @ $7.99 (dievca’s friend from Sweden sends it – hard to find)

Clearing the Closet – a continuing saga

dievca was thinking about the items in her closet that have worn out (which she didn’t/couldn’t replace), that don’t fit her, glasses she broke, pieces she sold, she’s selling, or she gave away in the past two years, etc. Just scratching the surface! “Sayonara”

Spreading coffee love with a JellyCat

Amuseables Espresso Cup – $23.00

Using a JellyCat London stuffy to make someone who has been having a tough time – smile.
Cross fingers that it will work.

Last minute trip – Back in Black

dievca was under a time crunch to pack for a trip out West. Apparently she defaults to NYC black under duress. The clothing choices were good with nights at freezing and days at 60 F (16 C). Layers could be pulled off throughout the day. she just stuck out like a sore thumb wearing mostly black. Good to know~

Drinks and Dinner + more

Halloween was a nice quiet evening for Master and His dievca.  Wine and conversation, re-arrange the living furniture to adjust the location of the recently cleaned area rug, play, dinner, aftercare.

the one that got away

Image

Description

  • Custom-made chest of drawers for an Interior Decorator
  • Solid wood
  • 92″W x 22″D x 32″H
  • Marble drawer pulls
  • Dovetailed joinery
  • Soft close drawer glides
  • HEAVY – Drawers can be removed to reduce weight
  • Unmarked
  • Shows light signs of wear with some scuffs, scratches, and dings to wood

dievca lost the auction.  she was prompted to bid beyond her “set” amount.  Its better this way – now she doesn’t have to get a moving company to heft the “chest of drawers/credenza” anywhere.  Still a bummer.

shopping for hardware

dievca schlepped over to the east side to help a friend shop for home build fixtures: toilets, bathtub, plumbing, kitchen appliances, drawer pulls, etc.  They went to the Ferguson Home showroom on E. 58th Street (previously Build.com), Miele and Bosch/Thermador/Gaggenau.

Every time dievca wandered off on her own – she was drawn to the “custom” items.  The ones without prices listed.   For example, the most expensive option for a kitchen sink fixture in the whole space – a custom order from Brooklyn.

Yeah – dievca is dangerous to anyone’s pocketbook.

The good news is that her friend was able to ignore dievca’s instincts and created a solid mid-high tier of nice ADA-compliant choices. (ADA-compliant = suitable for or accessible by people with disabilities, in compliance with the accessibility standards specified by the Americans with Disabilities Act.)

Kohler, Toto, Miele, Emtek, Hansgrohe, to name a few.

Its a lot to build a house!

Braving the Storage Unit

Image

dievca is spatially aware and excellent at packing.  she used to pack Master’s bags for trips, but he couldn’t replicate her efficiency. she still helps, but He makes sure there is extra room for errors.

This process extends to dievca’s storage unit.  Her spatial awareness is great for getting the unit to hold a maximum amount of “stuff” and, yes, dievca stores the items she “needs” consistently (clothing) in the front.  But today’s visit is asking for something else…

  • Switching bedding from Summer to Winter
  • Switching Summer to Winter Clothing (bins)
  • Finding a Baby Shower gift (dievca keeps little GAP jeans jackets or OshKosh Bibs in stock)
  • Finding the Christmas gifts for her Grand Nieces and Nephews – putting them in front
  • Deciding whether to keep an oak Wardrobe and Bedside Table or not
  • General Review

This means the unit needs to be completely emptied and repacked.

She’s setting aside 2-3 hours for today. Time to use those Tetris skills~

Wish her luck!

PRESERVE KITCHEN SPACE: Foldable design that stores in a drawer! Rubber funnels: expand for usage, collapse for storage.
SIMPLE TO CLEAN: They are safe to throw in the dishwasher and won’t warp or alter color. Very simple to maintain—just give it a quick water rinse, add a little soapy water to remove any oil with ease.

dievca uses it to tranfer coffee or a hot beverage from a large cup to a tight-neck travel flask (her S’well bottles that are still working well!).

    Schoolhouse Home Goods

    Our Roots

Schoolhouse began with a simple idea: that heritage and utility still deserve a place in modern living. When we discovered vintage lighting molds in an old upstate New York factory, it sparked a pursuit to reimagine traditional forms through thoughtful design and honest materials. Since then, we’ve dedicated ourselves to creating pieces that honor the past while fitting seamlessly into the present. More than just objects, our designs are modern heirlooms—celebrations of quality, craft, and the moments that make a house feel like home.
