When does something become a tradition?
Key factors for establishing a tradition:
Transmitting customs: The core of tradition is the transmission of a belief, practice, or custom from one generation to another.
Time and repetition: While there is no specific number of times an activity must be done, repetition over a significant period helps establish a tradition. Some sources suggest a practice may be considered a tradition after it has been passed down through multiple generations, while others say it can be considered a tradition much sooner if it is done consistently, say two years in a row.
Social participation: A tradition is more likely to be established when a large group of people participate in the activity.
Honor and respect: A sense of honor, respect, or acknowledgment of the past is a crucial element in establishing a tradition.
Deepening meaning: Over time, the motivation behind the activity often deepens. What may have started as a habit can become a tradition as it gains more significance.
Personal or cultural: Traditions can be personal to a family or group, or they can be larger cultural or social customs. Both can become traditions over time.

dievca schlepped over to the east side to help a friend shop for home build fixtures: toilets, bathtub, plumbing, kitchen appliances, drawer pulls, etc. They went to the Ferguson Home showroom on E. 58th Street (previously Build.com), Miele and Bosch/Thermador/Gaggenau.
Every time dievca wandered off on her own – she was drawn to the “custom” items. The ones without prices listed. For example, the most expensive option for a kitchen sink fixture in the whole space – a custom order from Brooklyn.
Yeah – dievca is dangerous to anyone’s pocketbook.
The good news is that her friend was able to ignore dievca’s instincts and created a solid mid-high tier of nice ADA-compliant choices. (ADA-compliant = suitable for or accessible by people with disabilities, in compliance with the accessibility standards specified by the Americans with Disabilities Act.)

Its a lot to build a house!

Taking a Chance on Taking Chance

I was stupidly wandering Instagram Reels and for some reason someone’s compilation of scenes from the movie, Taking Chance, popped up. The movie came out in 2009 via HBO. I’ve never had HBO. I didn’t know the movie existed. I ended up watching the clips…then crying hard. A little too close to home.
But the film seems to be so on point and well done~
Do I watch the movie and ugly cry for 80+ minutes?
Do I pass and miss something I should be witnessing/ honoring?
Its similar to when I was on the Grand Jury and a case of someone being set on fire (evidence included graphic photos) – I felt my job was to be present and bear witness.

dievca is ALWAYS a Chicago Cubs fan. Bad, Bad and sometimes Good. This year she started watching with the Cubs/Dodgers series in Japan. she’s more invested than in past years. It might be a fun year to be invested. dievca is having trouble with the media always trying to “get a story”, so she’s just keeping it to games/checking the score or watching the highlights on YouTube.
The fun part is Master is a Dodgers fan.
An odd moment in a new age

dievca’s job doesn’t call for her to be on the phone for any significant amount of time. It was odd when she looked up and saw she had been on the phone for 4 hours. 3 conversations – one with someone who cried. she realized that it was an “old school” moment and sometimes people need those moments to feel touched.

family communication – a learning experience

dievca’s oldest cousin passed (mid-80’s). Their partner (late 60’s) sent a text to dievca to let her know and asked if she could let the cousins know. Why dievca? she’s the youngest by a number of years (10+), she’s the last cousin to call the oldest cousin and chat (non-traditional spouses). As the baby, she is Switzerland – too young to be involved in any of the normal family spats.
dievca’s list was about 10 cousin’s long (dievca is missing 5 other cousins phone numbers), plus the last standing Uncle.
dievca texted.
It was an eye opening experience. dievca thought she was bad at texting – yeah, no. Her cousins are much worse.
Actually, the ones in their 60’s were ok. It was the ones in their 70’s.
Let’s just say communication became hilarious. dievca broke down and called the older cousins who needed it. she helped them text the partner of the cousin who passed. she asked the sisters to connect with their brothers and the other female cousins she missed. she learned who uses Facebook the most.
She also realized that she is the only GenX cousin in the Family.
As for her Uncle? He was lost on the telephone with dievca – dievca speaks too quickly and has experienced a Life her Uncle can’t envision. she kept it simple with an “I love you and I am thinking of you” at the end of the conversation.
What has dievca learned through this experience?
Try to stay on top of technology until you die.
Firmware Update – death of a laptop

dievca was prompted to do a firmware update. her computer is stuck on the restart screen and a forced restart isn’t moving anything. The laptop is still under warranty, but she has to ship it to be fixed.
In the mean time, a friend lent dievca a computer – its running Windows 10. When she was prompted to upgrade to Windows 11 – dievca’s reaction was a “hard NO“.
Yes, it has been nice to link her Samsung phone with a Samsung Laptop – but the laptops do not seem as robust as their phones.

“The Lady in 38 C
gets confused. She thinks I’m her nurse.
“Nurse!” she yells. “My finger!”
So I bring her a band-aid
and put it on even though she’s fine.
“Oh thank you nurse!” she yells.
“You’re a good one.”
She winks and smiles and the woman next to her
glares into her computer.
I think the old lady’s charming.
She’s 86, still pretty. Her eyes are blue.
Her hair is a cloud.
She looks exactly like what’s outside.
She’s the only air in this cabin, the only light.
“Nurse!” she yells, and I look back
over the sad heads, eggs in a carton,
faces pressed against
the mite-ridden blankets
and pillows they fought for,
and there she is, beaming.
“Nurse,” she says. “Where are we?”
I take her hand
and look out the window.
I scratch my head, smile
and say, “Somewhere
over Idunno.”
She’s the only passenger
who’s ever gotten that joke.
Up here, nearly everyone is miserable.
I count on small joys to get by.
The woman in 38C says, “Oh, Nurse!”
and the woman next to her

Why are people called Crabby?dievca did a Wal-Mart run to New Jersey. she tries to shop early and avoid traffic and crowds. People watching is always a highlight. This run offered mostly Hispanic and Asian patrons. A good amount of older gentlemen shopping and something new, younger Hispanic couples. A lot of half-awake, kinda grumpy non-morning people.
For the 1st time, dievca made the connection that everyone can be crabby, yet, young people can get away with it while older people just look like a**holes.
There is a turning point where a 23-year-old “Karen” is high maintenance, a 53-year-old “Karen” is a b*tch and an 83-year-old “Karen” needs a nap.
Crabby is crabby at a young age.
Crabby is crotchety and more annoying at an older age.
You can get away with complaining at a young age, but its not a good look at an older age.
Something dievca will keep in mind as she attempts to age gracefully.

(dievca just explained what a pinball machine is to a Senior in high school – the kid didn’t know what it was but did know about the existence of arcades because of PacMan and Frogger – so there is hope.)
Shopping local – Redondo Beach and Torrance, CA

Some items were less expensive than NYC and other items were more expensive.
As for clothing, dievca wasn’t really finding too much of interest for local clothing boutiques – so she stopped in a TJMaxx (Redondo Beach) and a Marshalls (Torrance). The two stores had a completely different vibe.
The Redondo Beach TJMaxx was “gritty” and didn’t offer higher end items. dievca picked up Holiday Cards for the yearly tips to her apartment building staff (17 people) and a hairbrush. The store and clientele were a bit grim.
Less than a mile (1.6 km) away,
the Torrance Marshalls was fun! People and staff were happy! They offered some of the same items as the TJMaxx, but had an overall larger selection. The store also offered mid-tier cashmere sweaters and generous discounts on items.
dievca picked up a Tahari Light Grey 100% Cashmere mock neck sweater (MSRP $398) for $60:
and a $450 The Recycled Planet Men’s Autobot Orange Recycled Down Jacket for $68:
The men’s sizing is large on dievca, but it covers her bum and will be great for being seen when biking NYC during the dark winter mornings!
So, dievca didn’t break the bank and saw a little deeper into the South Bay area of Los Angeles.
Very interesting.

Sorry for the disappearance, dievca and Master have had guests come and stay for Thanksgiving dinner and onward. It’s reminding dievca of the quote from Benjamin Franklin:
“Guests, like fish, begin to smell after three days.”
Why?
dievca has been catering to one high maintenance guest’s wants and what activities they scheduled for less than three days. Last evening, that guest spoke of creating an intricate schedule for the next two days… dievca is out.
Today – she takes back her Holiday and that friend is welcome to the house – but no longer allowed to dictate the activities and the schedule.
Cross fingers dievca can do this course correcting push in a gentle manner.🤞
This may not go over well and dievca may look like an a**, but Master has got dievca’s back.

Thanksgiving Day, is an annual national holiday in the United States (4th Thursday of November) and Canada (the 2nd Monday in October) celebrating the harvest and other blessings of the past year. Americans generally believe that their Thanksgiving is modeled on a 1621 harvest feast shared by the English colonists (Pilgrims) of Plymouth and the Wampanoag people.
What is the meaning of Thanksgiving?
Thanksgiving is celebrated as a means of giving thanks for family, friends, food, health and other positivity. Some families incorporate religion by giving thanks in prayer, but Thanksgiving is a federal holiday and celebrated nationwide.
The word Friendsgiving is, of course, a blend of friend and Thanksgiving, and it refers to a large meal eaten with friends either on or near Thanksgiving. When Friendsgiving first came into use, it was used to describe something much more informal than the traditional Thanksgiving meal. dievca is using the word to convey a celebration on Thanksgiving with friends, plus people who might be holiday orphans, traveling far from home, coworkers, etc. No immediate Family Members, this year.
But just because you can’t go home for the holidays doesn’t mean you have to be alone and leftover-less. Friends, coworkers, neighbors and “holiday orphans” can celebrate a fantastic “Friendsgiving” instead.

- Herb Roasted Turkey (cooked in a Reynold’s Wrap bag) holds the juices and is easy
- Pepperidge Farm Stuffing/Dressing (doctored up with corn, Andouille sausage and walnuts) Can you tell that dievca isn’t a huge fan of stuffing?
- Fresh Green Beans – steamed (butter and salt) A strange note, dievca has never eaten a green bean casserole
- Fresh Mashed Potatoes (herbs, milk and butter) something dievca does like to make
- Turkey Gravy – Heinz jar (adding fresh roasted garlic, drippings and a splash of wine) dievca did not grow up eating gravy, she doesn’t trust her skills
- Fresh Cranberry Sauce dievca is probably the only person who really likes this and she cannot stand the canned option
- Homemade Biscuits dievca does trust her baking skills
- Homemade Granny Smith Apple Pie (with ice cream) dievca does trust her baking skills
Note: Master has a child who has trained as a gourmet cook -dievca cannot compete, so she doesn’t try. she just goes for simple and clean ingredients for items she knows. she gets help (stuffing and gravy) for things she doesn’t know. dievca ran into a friend’s apathy the other day. dievca is supposed to take an interest in this friend’s work, family, social activities and any “gem” the friend offers. dievca does respond and will take a moment to show engagement.
Then when dievca offered up a tidbit, she was completely ignored.
she asked about the tidbit and the person could not be bothered. In fact, they were an asshole. All it would have taken is a “have fun”, “Thanks for sharing”, “I hadn’t heard about that”, “It’s not my thing – but thanks for thinking of me”.
It’s not enough of a problem to cancel the friendship, but its enough to be annoying.

Women’s Karma Recycling Tee from Amazon
As Master knows – dievca kills herself to recycle. she brings recycling home from people at work. she sorts, cleans, and organizes. dievca tries to find out how to move items to where they can be utilized.
And, yes, she has heard enough people say “You know, all that stuff goes into the landfill, anyways.” dievca’s theory is that if she organizes her materials and everything does go into a big pile, the plastics won’t break down- so maybe someday her clean, organized stuff will be useful.
Does dievca compost her food? Yes
Does dievca save the ketchup packets and use them rather than buying ketchup or soy sauce? Yes
Has dievca taken all the single use shampoos/soaps/conditioners from her and other’s past travels to the Homeless Shelters? Yes
Does dievca save the plastic cutlery packets that are dumped into her take-out food order even when she checks, “no utensils” on Seamless? Yes. And then she collects a bag full of unused packets and returns them to a local diner for a 2nd Life.

The feel of the evening wasn’t Autumn, but more “end of Summer”, so she got away with the lighter accessories. Yes, she added beads to her Topsiders!
The UWS (Upper Westside) is known for an aging population, so it was odd to see a young, eclectic crowd flock to Chama Mama. Master and His dievca were the oldest people in the joint!
The food was excellent! There were a number of vegetarian/vegan options and the prices were lower – maybe that was the draw. No matter – it was a lovely evening.
What did Master wear?

Wiped out for a good reason~

- 6 adults
- torrential rain
- a good Zoo to wander (Milwaukee Zoo)
- Irish Pub Food (closest and everyone was up for something warm)
- a Birthday celebration with hot cookies and ice cream (dievca’s birthday)
- Swimming at dievca’s hotel (always makes kids happy)
Yesterday was an amazing day and wiped dievca out completely. Lots of good energy!
she has a really great family.
Gameplan to battle Mental Malaise

It can include symptoms like: Emotional tiredness, Difficulty concentrating, Mental uneasiness, and Lethargy or discomfort that is vague or unfocused.
To counteract dievca’s negative emotional state….she took the afternoon off and went on the rooftop to enjoy the sun. A little selfcare, vitamin D + chatting with friends goes a long way to dispelling ire.
Traditional Mentality Clearing activities:
Relaxing in the Sun: putting on a great swimsuit (Else) and Linen Gauze Kaftan (Lisa Marie Fernandez) for the rooftop rather than just shorts and a jog bra
Self-Care: legs waxed, “Old School” low-impact aerobics workout to techno music with a solid stretching session afterward. Verbal and text chat with two good friends. Take B12 and magnesium. Early to bed.
Retail Therapy: Lisa Yang denim blue cashmere Stockholm Hat and Paris Scarf
Healthy Meal: heirloom tomato Caprese salad and a Luigi’s Cherry Italian Ice for dessert
dievca is very much on her way to a Positive Mental Attitude!
