Have a great week!

Humored!

Image

Master will be visiting LegoLand with young family this year.  dievca is completely humored by this development.  It tickles her funny bone.  Maybe she can talk her Master into a bit of Pirate Play when he comes back.

Arghhhh!

Finally made it to Coronado

dievca didn’t make it to Coronado for the fireworks as initially planned. she did make it over to the Hotel del Coronado for her finale!

A little Mexican food with friends and then sushi before flying home – it was an amazing weekend.

Now, back to the humidity of NYC.

stopped to smell the blossoms -NYC

dievca stopped to smell the crabapple blossoms and found signs of an elegant Spring designed to spread Joy.

Simple hiking through the Desert

dievca’s knee does better on trails than flat surfaces. Going up is easier than heading down. 5 miles is her max limit, but she’s keeping it simple, due to heat, dry air and ability.  It’s a Joy to be able to do something before work starts.

Seeing a couple of Roadrunners is good luck according to the Pima and other American Indian tribes!

Flower Song – Francisco Alarcón

The Lady in 38C – Lori Jakiela

Image
“The Lady in 38 C
gets confused. She thinks I’m her nurse.
“Nurse!” she yells. “My finger!”
So I bring her a band-aid
and put it on even though she’s fine.
“Oh thank you nurse!” she yells.
“You’re a good one.”
She winks and smiles and the woman next to her
glares into her computer.
I think the old lady’s charming.
She’s 86, still pretty. Her eyes are blue.
Her hair is a cloud.
She looks exactly like what’s outside.
She’s the only air in this cabin, the only light.
“Nurse!” she yells, and I look back
over the sad heads, eggs in a carton,
faces pressed against
the mite-ridden blankets
and pillows they fought for,
and there she is, beaming.
“Nurse,” she says. “Where are we?”
I take her hand
and look out the window.
I scratch my head, smile
and say, “Somewhere
over Idunno.”
She’s the only passenger
who’s ever gotten that joke.
Up here, nearly everyone is miserable.
I count on small joys to get by.
The woman in 38C says, “Oh, Nurse!”
and the woman next to her
who probably thinks we’re somewhere
over Idaho, that wonderland of Hemingway
and golden potatoes,
rolls her eyes and bangs the computer keys
until the seatbelt sign goes on
and the captain says,
“We’ll be experiencing weather.”
which is what people say
instead of scary things like storm and turbulence
and pretty soon the plane is bouncing
and the woman with the computer
grips her armrest
while the old lady throws her arms up
like she’s on a roller coaster and yells,
“They should charge extra for this!”

Fancy Colours – NYC Hudson Yards

Hudson Yards has a “raised patio” area next to the “Vessel” (Egg, Shwarma, etc.)  dievca has seen it wrapped in various murals, but not one directly painted on to the surface.  They are currently working on it – here are the beginning stages:

~ then March ROARED in

dievca didn’t have to work this past Saturday – so, she decided to catch up with friends for lunch.  It was a gorgeous 62 F (17C) sunny day.  They met at Cafe by the Girls on 23rd Street between 10th and 11th.

Simple, clean and easy – it was nice to get by without a coat.

dievca recommends:

THE COLOMBIAN
Classic south American shredded beef with grilled queso fresco, spring mix, cilantro mayonnaise and red pickled onions.

After lunch, dievca biked across 23rd street to the Gramercy Housing Works to pick up a pair of Tom Ford Teak T-strap Sandals she won from an auction:

As she biked, the wind picked up and the temperature dropped in the late afternoon.  It’s sitting at 20 F (-7C) this morning. Add gusting winds. Looks like dievca will be back to bundling up!

Good Morning! XO

something ridiculous on a Tuesday: the child in dievca

dievca has the honor of hanging around young kids occasionally.  This week it was a nine-year-old who was excited to share information about a squirting cucumber.

dievca’s young friend excitedly talked about the squirting cucumber, but ended her description stating that she “thinks” it exists.  Queue Google videos!

It does exist!

After the video – the comment was “it farts and poops”!
Yes, yes it does~

(May we all take joy in the ridiculous ways of the World!)

Here’s the link if you want the 5 min description/better slo mo (its the video we watched).

A shiny apple pie! (recipe)

20241009_181331

dievca’s friend is still giving her apples from the orchard in upstate New York. It was use them or lose them~  So, this week, dievca decided to make an apple pie.  she had time constraints and used a store bought crust rather than making her own. The crust is not the best nor the worst – just middling.

The apples, on the other hand, shine!

Screenshot_20230916_092606_Chromedievca mixed MacIntosh apples from the orchard with Comic Crisps from Governors Island.  she added Fuji apples and realized her mix may be too sweet – so she cut down on sugar.

If you are asking yourself, “Who is eating all this baked goodness?” It’s not dievca.

she has shared with Master, neighbors, friends from work, colleagues from work.

Here’s the recipe dievca used – its for her Dutch friend who stated that she has too many apples, too!

Ingredients

Servings:  people
  • 1 recipe for double pie crust
  • 2 1/4 lbs applespeeled, cored  6-7 apples (7 cups thinly sliced)
  • 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 8 Tbsp unsalted butter
  • 3 Tbsp  all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg + 1 Tbsp water, for egg wash

Instructions

  • Make the pie crust recipe and chill per instructions while preparing the filling. Preheat oven to 425˚F (218 C)
  • Melt butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in 3 Tbsp flour then simmer for 1 minute, whisking constantly. Whisk in 1/4 cup water and 1 cup sugar and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and continue simmering for 3 minutes, whisking frequently then remove from heat.
  • Peel, remove cores, and thinly slice 7 cups of apples and place them in a large bowl. Sprinkle the top with 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon and toss to combine. Pour the sauce over the apples and stir to coat the apple slices.
  • Sprinkle your work surface with flour and roll out the bottom pie crust to a 12″ diameter circle. Wrap it around your rolling pin to transfer it to the 9″ pie plate. Add apple mixture, mounding slightly in the center and being careful not to get the filling on the edges which would make it difficult to seal.
  • Roll the second crust into an 11″ round and cut into 10 even-thickness strips using a pizza cutter. Arrange strips in a woven lattice pattern over the top (see video tutorial). Beat together 1 egg and 1 Tbsp water and brush the top with egg mixture.
  • Bake at 425˚F in the center of the oven for 15 minutes. Reduce the heat to 350˚F (177 C) and continue baking for another 45 minutes or until the apples are soft and the filling is bubbling through the vents.* Rest at room temp 1 hour before serving.

Notes

*Place a sheet of foil on the rack below the apple pie to catch any potential drips from the pie.

-Granny Smith Apples are good apples for apple pie, but you can also use any sweet/tart crisp apple, like Golden Delicious, Honeycrisp, or Pink Lady.

-Store cooled pie covered on the counter overnight or in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. To freeze, store the cooled pie in a freezer-safe container for up to 6 months. Thaw on the counter or in the fridge and then warm in the oven at 350°F for around 20 minutes

– If you need the imperial measurements converted to metric – just let dievca know.

Finishing the Summer – nail color

dievca is spending the rest of the month (August) by herself – Master is traveling to the West Coast for family stuff and work. Because she’s alone, dievca has been letting her toenails “breathe” which means take a break from nail polishes.  That said she would like to do one more bright “hurrah” for the Summer.

Here’s what she has in her box:

Apparently, classic Red is OUT! So, dievca is leaning towards the Green or the Orange, but “Makin’ Waves” looks fun and the French Blue Gel might be good.  OK, this is going to be a last minute decision!

What color are your toenails?

Peonies – Mary Oliver

20240529_121346

This morning the green fists of the peonies are getting ready
to break my heart
as the sun rises,
as the sun strokes them with his old, buttery fingers

and they open —
pools of lace,
white and pink —
and all day the black ants climb over them,

boring their deep and mysterious holes
into the curls,
craving the sweet sap,
taking it away

to their dark, underground cities —
and all day
under the shifty wind,
as in a dance to the great wedding,

the flowers bend their bright bodies,
and tip their fragrance to the air,
and rise,
their red stems holding

all that dampness and recklessness
gladly and lightly,
and there it is again —
beauty the brave, the exemplary,

blazing open.
Do you love this world?
Do you cherish your humble and silky life?
Do you adore the green grass, with its terror beneath?

Do you also hurry, half-dressed and barefoot, into the garden,
and softly,
and exclaiming of their dearness,
fill your arms with the white and pink flowers,

with their honeyed heaviness, their lush trembling,
their eagerness
to be wild and perfect for a moment, before they are
nothing, forever?

The view from the Train

The train car was a “club car” and built in 1947. Fully restored.  The carpet came from a Cinema and followed the original pattern.  The windows were large and offered a view of the Hudson River (George Washington Bridge, new Tappen Zee Bridge, Hudson, NY lighthouse, etc).  The chairs were quite comfortable, too.  By the way, does anyone want to become a Marine Corp. Officer in the Reserves? XO
