The Humming-Bird (Beatrice Ravenel)

ImageThe sundial makes no sign
At the point of the August noon.
The sky is of ancient tin,
And the ring of the mountains diffused and unmade
(One always remembers them).
On the twisted dark of the hemlock hedge
Rain, like a line of shivering violin-bows
Hissing together, poised on the last turgescent swell,
Batters the flowers.
Under the trumpet-vine arbor,
Clear, precise as an Audubon print,
The air is of melted glass,
Solid, filling interstices
Of leaves that are spaced on the spines
Like a pattern ground into glass;
Dead, as though dull red glass were poured into the mouth,
Choking the breath, molding itself into the creases of soft red tissues.

And a humming-bird darts head first,
Splitting the air, keen as a spurt of fire shot from the blow-pipe,
Cracking a star of rays; dives like a flash of fire,
Forked tail lancing the air, into the immobile trumpet;
Stands on the air, wings like a triple shadow
Whizzing around him.

Shadows thrown on the midnight streets by a snow-flecked arc-light,
Shadows like sword-play,
Splinters and spines from a thousand dreams
Whizz from his wings!

dievca was daydreaming about a hummingbird she saw in Amagansett, NY

Simple hiking through the Desert

dievca’s knee does better on trails than flat surfaces. Going up is easier than heading down. 5 miles is her max limit, but she’s keeping it simple, due to heat, dry air and ability.  It’s a Joy to be able to do something before work starts.

Seeing a couple of Roadrunners is good luck according to the Pima and other American Indian tribes!

“March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb” NYC

Image

The last three weeks have been especially windy in the Big Apple, with more than half the days registering “strong breezes” — and its making life difficult for city slickers.

The wind speeds themselves weren’t out of the ordinary for March, but they ripped through the five boroughs much more frequently thanks to the much stronger and disastrous storms ravaging the Midwest.

Apparently the winds come crashing in behind each one, which is pretty typical. It’s just been at a higher frequency because of those systems moving out of the “flyover” part of the country to exit off the East Coast.

The Midwest and Southwest were hit especially hard with storms this March, including a series of devastating systems that tore through eight states two weeks ago.  By the time the systems crossed the NYC metro area, they were composed of little more than rainfall and semi-strong gusts that were on par with typical March storms.

That doesn’t mean the winds weren’t noticeable, however — especially in Hudson Yards, where the high rises pushed the wind to create wind tunnels on the sidewalks.

So far, winds in March clocked in an average range of 25-30 mph gusts, according to weather stations at LaGuardia and JFK airport, which is considered by the National Weather Service to be a “strong breeze” — but more than half the days reached “near gale” territory.

Over half the days in March experienced a max wind gust of 30 miles an hour or greater, which doesn’t sound like a lot, but day after day, it does start to add up.  If New Yorkers and tourists were wondering if it’s been extra windy lately, it has been.

The winds will continue through this last week of March as a new system is expected to clobber the Big Apple with rainfall and whipping winds of up to 50 miles per hour.  This incoming storm could be the breezy finale for a chilly March — as winds are expected to finally die down.

“A “Thank you” to the NY Post” and the photo was taken on top of the Empire State building.

Wintery Mix

Image Wintry showers is a somewhat informal meteorological term, used primarily in the United Kingdom, to refer to various mixtures of rain, graupel (soft hail.snow pellets) and snow at once. Though there is no “official” definition of the term, in the United Kingdom it is not used when there is any significant accumulation of snow on the ground. It is often used when the temperature of the ground surface is above 0 °C (32 °F), preventing snow from accumulating even if the air temperature near the surface is slightly below 0 °C (32 °F); but even then, the falling precipitation must generally have something else other than exclusively snow.

In the United States, wintry mix generally refers to a mixture of freezing rain, ice pellets, and snow. In contrast to the usage in the United Kingdom, in the United States it is usually used when both air and ground temperatures are below 0 °C (32 °F). Additionally, it is generally used when some surface accumulation of ice and snow is expected to occur.

NYC is expecting a traditional “Snow Storm”, today.  dievca is rolling her eyes because it usually just ends up as a Wintery Mix mess.  Snow boots are good for snow, but rain boots with wool socks are better for the “mess”.

Chooka offers some inexpensive options:

Taking a walk along the Palos Verdes: a soft lesson in geology

At one time, Palos Verdes was actually an island—part of the Channel Island archipelago that today still comprises eight islands, including those off the coast of Ventura as well as Catalina, San Clemente and their neighboring islands.

You may have heard that Ranchos Palos Verdes is dealing with massive mud slides.

An ancient complex of landslides under the Portuguese Bend Reserve, located within the larger Palos Verdes Nature Preserve, was activated in 1956, which halted all housing development in the area. That allowed many of the homeowners to buy their properties for far less than what they would later be worth after undergoing extensive renovations.

For hundreds of years, the Portuguese Bend barely felt any movement from the gradually shifting landslide complex. But this year, residents living in the community’s 140 homes started to see cracks in the ground – in their closets, bedrooms and gardens – steadily getting bigger and ripping apart their properties as the land movement began to accelerate following two years of severe storms starting in 2022.

Officials say the land underneath Rancho Palos Verdes is moving at approximately 1 foot per week. And while it’s been moving slowly for thousands of years, construction in the mid-1950s greatly accelerated the slippage and the last two years of wet winters have only caused it to move more.

So, what is it about the land in this particular area that makes it so susceptible to slippage on a big enough scale to uproot homes and the families who live there?

The biggest driving force behind the landslide? Water trapped in the ground.

The land movement happening in Rancho Palos Verdes is called a translational landslide — one that measures over a mile long and a mile wide. It’s tending to be more uplift than lateral movement, dropping vertically at the top and rising up at its toe.

To make matters worse, there are two landslides at play — the shallower one that initially caused red-tagging of homes and a stoppage of electricity, then a deeper one that’s moving even faster.

The shallow slide has been well-documented over the decades.  Its the deep slide that is of concern.  Its a large complex that seems to be moving as a unit.

How do you get the water out of the land to stop or limit the movement towards the ocean? Its a Herculean task. Will implemented measures to relieve the water pressure work? How much will it cost over a long period of time? Note – a land mass this large has been stabilized and documented.

dievca really experienced the landslide driving around the southern peninsular subregion – there was a portion of the road which had a drop — it looked and felt like going down a ski jump. Much more than a 45 degree angle. Whoa!

something ridiculous on a Tuesday: the child in dievca

dievca has the honor of hanging around young kids occasionally.  This week it was a nine-year-old who was excited to share information about a squirting cucumber.

dievca’s young friend excitedly talked about the squirting cucumber, but ended her description stating that she “thinks” it exists.  Queue Google videos!

It does exist!

After the video – the comment was “it farts and poops”!
Yes, yes it does~

(May we all take joy in the ridiculous ways of the World!)

Here’s the link if you want the 5 min description/better slo mo (its the video we watched).

The last of September Asters

20241006_171917September’s birth flower are asters. In ancient times, asters were held to have magical powers. For example, it was believed that burning their leaves could drive away snakes and evil spirits. Greek myth claims two possible origins for the flower, saying either that it sprang from the tears of Astraea, the goddess of innocence, or from the blood of King Aegeus, who committed suicide in the mistaken belief that his son Theseus had been killed by the minotaur. As an emblem of Venus, the Roman goddess of love, the flower was also used as an ingredient in love potions.

In general, asters are considered to symbolize love, affection, and wisdom. In the Victorian flower language, they also carried the meaning of daintiness, patience, and charm. However, the specific color of an aster can change its meaning. Purple asters, the most popular kind, denote wisdom and royalty, while white asters mean innocence and purity. Choosing red asters sends a message of undying devotion, with pink asters conveying love and sensitivity.

October’s birth flower are marigolds.

Where dievca has visited in Utah? Its a mix between State and National Parks.  And its been a great deal of driving.  she’s making her way back to California now.

The good news is that her knee held up well on trails up to three miles (4.8 km) and with some mild scrambling.  Plus, the quad and glute muscles strengthened.

The bad news?  she had to be really mindful: ice the knee, put the large brace on in the hotel to straighten her leg, go to hotel gyms to strengthen, stretch, use the Theragun mini and she’s not sure how to keep the muscle she gained when back to walking on flat surfaces in NYC.

Well worth the trouble.

PS. Happy belated Summer Solstice! Full Moon tonight – don’t forget to shake your wallet at the moon! XO

Prepping for Midsommar

dievca’s friend had a delivery from her Father – new potatisar (potatoes) and jordgubbar (strawberries) from their Summer House garden.  We have a dill plant, chives in the garden, sour cream and pickled herring.  Lamb will be on the grill.

The traditional accompaniment is a cold beer and schnapps.

dievca’s task? Scrub the potatoes…

The annual trip – and a better Sunset/Sunrise

20211002_184533
The Governors Isalnd annual trek is very simple – a bike ride, $3 round-trip ferry ticket and the splurge for a “Glamping” Tent. Worth every penny when your view is of this sunset and a morning walk around the island offers a mystical view of….Brooklyn!

CA to AZ is flat until…

The drive from San Diego to outside of Sedona is a long one. The gas prices dropped from $4 a gallon to $3.09 to $2.99.  After a long gradual incline of 4000+ feet and an uneventful ride – beauty arose:

The First Day of Spring!

Image

This spring flowering bulb was first brought to Europe from its native Middle East in the 1500s. It was mostly grown for the fall blooming species used for making an expensive cooking spice. However, most gardeners know it for the early blooming varieties that herald spring. It’s the crocus.

This iris family corm (a rounded underground storage organ present in plants such as crocuses, gladioli, and cyclamens, consisting of a swollen stem base covered with scale leaves) produces tube-shaped flowers in abundance in colors such as mauve, lavender, white, and yellow.

Crocus chrysanthus varieties bloom early, often while there’s still snow on the ground.

Crocus are fall planted, like daffodils and tulips. Even with winter hanging on through March, look to see the crocus blooming in warm spots or protected areas.

A crocus is often the first sign of Spring in NYC.
