Prepping for Thanksgiving

Trussing the Turkey – not quite the option we need!

But elegant to look at!  A bird in bondage by Violet Lee (Violently).

Happy Thanksgiving!

May your turkey trussing be effective for evenly cooking the bird.

1970’s Day-Dream with Alfred Tennyson

PROLOGUE

O LADY FLORA, let me speak:
A pleasant hour has passed away
While, dreaming on your damask cheek,
The dewy sister-eyelids lay.
As by the lattice you reclined,
I went thro’ many wayward moods
To see you dreaming—and, behind,
A summer crisp with shining woods.
And I too dream’d, until at last
Across my fancy, brooding warm,
The reflex of a legend past,
And loosely settled into form.
And would you have the thought I had,
And see the vision that I saw,
Then take the broidery-frame, and add
A crimson to the quaint Macaw,
And I will tell it. Turn your face,
Nor look with that too-earnest eye—
The rhymes are dazzled from their place
And order’d words asunder fly.

EPILOGUE

SO, Lady Flora, take my lay,
And, if you find a meaning there,
O whisper to your glass, and say,
‘What wonder, if he thinks me fair?’
What wonder I was all unwise,
To shape the song for your delight
Like long-tail’d birds of Paradise
That float thro’ Heaven, and cannot light?
Or old-world trains, upheld at court
By Cupid-boys of blooming hue—
But take it—earnest wed with sport,
And either sacred unto you.

The Day-Dream

Terry Richardson’s provocative photography walks a fine line between fashion and pornography, liberation and debauchery. This portfolio surveys Richardson’s distinctive aesthetic and offers a peek into his crazy, hedonistic world. Packaged in a clear plastic box with a Terrybear, this enormous Art Edition includes the chromogenic print Asses, a typically titillating image of two behinds jostling for attention.

Limited Art Edition of 250 copies (No. 751–1,000), each numbered and signed by Terry Richardson, including a Terrybear and the signed chromogenic print Asses

WTF moment on the Hudson River

Imagedievca attended her WaterWorks class and stepped out on the sundeck to use the outdoor shower.  As she was rinsing off she glanced at the Hudson River to see a VERY LARGE MASS of jet skis (PWC’s) heading upstream!

Absolute Chaos~

Apparently this yearly jet ski convention is called the “NYC Jet Ski Invasion”

Its held in conjunction with NYC Pride weekend activities and raises money for US Coast Guard programs. 400 participants this year.

Clink on the link above to see amazing footage from yesterday!
dievca didn’t have her phone around while she rinsed off…

The “trail” plan was:

400 jet skis and other support vessels will launch from various locations around New York Harbor, Hudson River, and East River to gather in the vicinity of the Pepsi Cola Sign on the East River, Long Island City, NY by 10 am. The jet skis and support vessels will then travel in formation southward down the East River towards Battery Park and then northward up the Hudson River towards the George Washington Bridge. Expect a high volume of jet skis on the waterways following the event as the group disperses.

dievca saw them pass Chelsea Piers NYC at Noon.  And noticed that some of the NYC ferries didn’t look happy.  It was quite a show and created a number of waves/wakes.

Fancy Colours – NYC Hudson Yards

Hudson Yards has a “raised patio” area next to the “Vessel” (Egg, Shwarma, etc.)  dievca has seen it wrapped in various murals, but not one directly painted on to the surface.  They are currently working on it – here are the beginning stages:

What you see

In NYC

When your PT (Physical Therapy) is on 44th street between 5th and 6th Ave.

The parade started at 44th Street and traveled uptown on 5th Ave until 79th street.  Something dievca would have avoided had she known it was on a Monday.  Actually, the policeman working the street closure was great and let dievca through easily. Just another odd thing to see while living in NYC.

Signs of Spring

Image

On dievca’s ride to work she noticed patches of crocus’ blossoming, one lone daffodil and a tiny patch of violets.  The first signs of Spring in NYC.  It makes her heart sing.

I Watched a Blackbird

By Thomas Hardy

I watched a blackbird on a budding sycamore
One Easter Day, when sap was stirring twigs to the core;
I saw his tongue, and crocus-coloured bill
Parting and closing as he turned his trill;
Then he flew down, seized on a stem of hay,
And upped to where his building scheme was under way,
As if so sure a nest was never shaped on spray.

“winds roaring”

Image

Wind on the High Line, NYC  Hudson Yards

dievca has been in NYC for 20 + years.  The majority of those years have been lived in high-rise apartment buildings and she has located herself above the 20th floor.

High-rise buildings are defined by NFPA 1 and NFPA 101 buildings where the floor of an occupiable story is greater than 75 ft above the lowest level of fire department vehicle access.

In both cases, the buildings were built to sway with wind and would creak with the motion.  As dievca is sitting in her apartment, this morning, the winds are roaring the apartment is creaking.

Wind roaring, also known as eolian tones or aeolian sounds, is the sound of wind blowing over objects and creating friction. This friction produces sound waves that travel through the air.

dievca knows when she bikes to work this morning – it is going to be a slog.  Unless the wind is behind her – then the ride will be described in one word, “wheeeeee!”.

Have a good morning!

Are you able to navigate NYC?

Image
Without pissing off the “Natives”?

  1. New Yorkers don’t stop at the top or bottom of Subway stairs.
  2. New Yorkers don’t congregating in a group on Subway platforms or on sidewalks.
  3. New Yorkers don’t Walk three or more abreast of each other on the street. Or hold hands while walking which causes everyone else to walk single file in opposite direction or having to push through in the same direction.
  4.  For New Yorkers walking is not just a stroll for fun. Its an effective means of transportation to get through a very crowded city. NY-ers walk fast and with intention. Its really hard to walk behind lots of tourists when you need to get somewhere quickly.
  5. New Yorkers don’t stop in the middle of the street or sidewalk to gaze at Buildings or take Selfies.
  6. New Yorkers avoid popular tourist spots that can become very crowded which makes it difficult for locals to navigate their own neighborhood.
  7. New Yorkers don’t have patience with tourists who struggle with the subway system during peak travel times. It leads to delays and chaos when they are on a timeline to get to their destination.
  8. New Yorkers don’t have patience with tourists who don’t follow local customs, such as standing to the right on escalators, allowing others to pass them.
  9. New Yorkers walk with intent. Some might call it quick paced or looking like we’re in a rush. We call it knowing where you’re going.
  10. New Yorkers are always moving forward – we don’t abruptly stop in the middle of the sidewalk.
  11. New Yorkers actively attempt to avoid the squares: Time Square, Washington Square, Union Square…
  12. New Yorkers know that an empty subway car on an otherwise crowded train is NOT a car we want to get into.
  13. New Yorkers don’t disturb celebrities that we see on the street, in a restaurant, on the subway, running in the park…
  14. New Yorkers do not stare. If we initially appear to be looking in your direction or seemingly directly at you, you will likely get more of a feeling that we are looking past or even through you.
  15. New Yorkers will ignore things that most others would consider bizarre. For example, the guy who begins screaming at his invisible lover while riding the downtown express train.
  16. New Yorkers don’t attempt to hail occupied taxis. On top of every cab in NYC is a roof light. An available taxi is one where just the center numbers/letters are lit. These same lights are off when the taxi is already occupied.
  17. New Yorkers don’t yell “taxi.” We simply hold out our hand, much like the once used Olympic salute.
  18. New Yorkers have learned to completely ignore anyone who attempts to: 1) hand them a flyer, or 2) sell them candy to support their high school basketball team; 3) asks “Do you like comedy?”; or 4) holds a clipboard while standing on the sidewalk.
  19. New Yorkers refer to the subway system ONLY by the numbers or letters of the train. For example, “Take the C to Times Square and then transfer to the 7 towards Grand Central.” The colors mean nothing to us.
  20. New Yorkers demonstrate a “queueing” behavior which can be exceptionally efficient. Despite the number of available registers, New Yorkers will form a single line whereby the front person goes to the next available register.
  21. New Yorkers know their coffee and/or food order before they get to the head of a line. Tourists tend to dither and appear indecisive.

the City has been quiet

20231028_080428dievca has a late arrival this morning.  she noticed the City was quiet Wednesday morning and yesterday morning.  It’s quiet this morning as well.  Perhaps the election took up much of the City’s energy, perhaps the time change allowed people a slower start to their days, perhaps people are traveling.  Whatever.

The silence offers dievca a moment to watch the dawn break.

Mankind has its drama, the Earth holds steady.

The last of September Asters

20241006_171917September’s birth flower are asters. In ancient times, asters were held to have magical powers. For example, it was believed that burning their leaves could drive away snakes and evil spirits. Greek myth claims two possible origins for the flower, saying either that it sprang from the tears of Astraea, the goddess of innocence, or from the blood of King Aegeus, who committed suicide in the mistaken belief that his son Theseus had been killed by the minotaur. As an emblem of Venus, the Roman goddess of love, the flower was also used as an ingredient in love potions.

In general, asters are considered to symbolize love, affection, and wisdom. In the Victorian flower language, they also carried the meaning of daintiness, patience, and charm. However, the specific color of an aster can change its meaning. Purple asters, the most popular kind, denote wisdom and royalty, while white asters mean innocence and purity. Choosing red asters sends a message of undying devotion, with pink asters conveying love and sensitivity.

October’s birth flower are marigolds.
