and tried to steal
my sapodillas
I got out
of my house
screaming
and they ran away
they were so amused
they were sitting
down the road
and laughing
and when I
looked at them
they got up
and ran again
and disappeared
into another road
and once
some boys
had tried
to steal my coconuts
they had jumped
into my property
from the one
alongside mine
but upon seeing me
looking at them
they ran away too
and I remember
myself as a boy
the mischief
I was up to
with my friends
though we never
stole anything
lighting firecrackers
in the exhausts
of lovers’ cars
parked on our
street
shooting streetlights
with air rifles
and the thrill
of pressing
someone’s doorbell
and running away
gives me the chuckles
today.
