Happy La Kermeese!

I’m watching them set up for the block party right now. We got front row seats to the concert and fireworks and we don’t even have to leave to house! Can’t get out the front door right now, cause there’s a Slush Puppy machine and a hot dog stand in the sidewalk. The radio stations are setting up in front of my bedroom window. Such exicentment going on. I love it.

Wondering: Are any of you guys going to be here tonight?

For Those who don’t know, it’s a French festival celebrated in Maine. It celebrates the peace between Maine and Quebec and the mixed heritage of everyone that lives in the area. It’s headquarters are in Biddeford Maine, which is a predominaty French town, and they close off all of Main Street and the off streets and turn the entire city into a giant carnival.

It looks like the entire population of Quebec is here right now, you should see the traffic!

A green frog is the symbol of the festival, and everyone has got frogs on their shirts and frog hats, and kids are winning stuffed frog prizes at the game stands.

This is our first year living in Biddeford (we used to live in Old Orchard Beach on the other side of the river), so we’ve never gotting to see it like this before. We’ve only seen it after it was open. It opens in a half hour, but they started setting up last night, so we’ve been watching the whole thing.

They have fireworks off the bridg at 9. We are in the first house off the bridge, overlooking the river, so the fireworks are going to be shot off just a few feet from my window. That ought to be interesting.

EDIT:

They just started. Right now they are singing the National Anthem of the US, they’ll do the Canadian one next, and the one for Quebec. Everything the announcer says gets said twice, once in Engligh nd than again in French.

EDIT:

Only in Biddeford! There’s a guy with a “trash pick up claw” going around picking up the trash that is grewing steadily on the streets. An elderly man with a cane just came walking by, waked the trash-picker-upper with the cane, and now the two men are duelinging, with cane and trash-pick-up-thing, like it was a sword fight.

EDIT:

I’m back again. Had to go out and watch what was going on out there. The fireworks just ended. Oh it was just amazing! The La Kermeese fireworks are the largest fireworks display in Maine… 4th of July has nothing on La Kermeese. The fireworks are so big andthey shoot them up so high that they can be seen over most of Southern York county. So we always see them no matter where we happen to be when they go off each year. But this year we are living in the first house off the bridge, right on the river’s edge, so this year we got to see them up close. And boy did we see them up close! OMG! I’ve never seen fireworks so close before. They were shooting them off about 50 feet from our front door. I went out on the front porch to watch them. OMG! It sounded like there was a canoon in my brain! That thing they shoot fireworks out of is SO LOUD! Even with tens of thousands of people all talking at once and the big band music playing (live band too!) I couldn’t hear them, all I could hear was the firework’s canon-thing.

But seeing it was amazing! OMG! It was like we were right inside of the fireworks! They were going up straight over our heads. I’ve always seen fireworks from a distance, far off, away from the crowd; kind of on a hill “looking down” at the fireworks. But this time I was right underneath them!!!! Boy is that ever a change of perspective! Watching them fan out from underneath, was just undescribably amazing! I wish you guys could have seen it! I’ve never seen anything like that before!

Well, it’s all done down, so I cam back in. The fireworks lasted a full half-hour, and ended with a big “atomic bomb” looking mushroom display that just kept going up higher and higher. It was beautiful! Now the band’s playing again. It sounds like an old 1800’s ciruse out there, they are playing the old carousel/carvial type music. Like what you hear on a merry-go-round, only it’s being played live by a real band… and boy is it loud!

I love La Kermeese.

Harassment Update: Lockdown?

I’m not sure I understand what it is they are up to this time, but now we are not allowed on our land??? We are being told it is being auctioned off! ?????? WHAT! Aren’t we supposed to at least get a 30 day notice or something? I don’t get it.

Spring is here

Today my  little brother found a snake under a board. Cute little thing, not quite out of hibernation, cause I picked him up to move him, and he stayed coiled up. We moved him over to the woodpile where he wouldn’ be in danger of being stepped on. You can tell that spring has arrived when you see a snake, because they won’t surface untiol after the danger of frost is past.

Harassment Continues…

Once again we came home to find that someone had tresspassed onto our land and let the hens lose. You know, I’m really getting sick of this. Whoever is doing this, it is not funny, and the fact that it happens again and again, makes it go beyound annoying. I’d really like to find out who is doing this and why. I don’t take to kindly to people endangering my pets.

pet food recall update: HUMAN FOOD BEING RECALLED!!!!!!!!!

Remember when I wrote this post and questioned what would happen; the effects of farm animals eating tainted food ; being a poultry farmer, my post focused on chicken not pork, but news that corn was now effected, and chickens eat corn one thing lead to another and I started questioning what we feed our chickens…. PORK from pigs that have eaten tainted food, has now been added to the recall!!!
Reading this post lead me to:

You know what this is staring to sound like? Biological warfare.

New Book Projects, Job Searches, & Seventh Sanctum

You may have noticed that the past couple of days, I have not been posting as often as I was; from 4 or 5 posts a day to about one every other day. There is a reason, quite simple. I got an idea for a new book, and spent the last few days researching it. As ever, one thing lead to another and now I’ve got ideas for three new books and have been working on them all at once. Of course, me writing longhand means I wasn’t online, meaning I was not here to blog. Sorry.

Other reason, is I’m still out searching for a job type job, but have yet to find one. As usual I am told that businesses just won’t hire someone who had never been to school, or someone my age who has never had a job before. 😦 (Apperantly, 7 years as a door to door salesman for Avon, doesn’t count as a job, nor does 27 years of writing… or so I’m told by interviewers.) It is getting quite depressing, as I have been seeking a job since May of 2006 and now May 2007 is just around the corner and still all of my endless applications and interviews have turned up nothing. I’m now having a hard time finding places that I have not yet applied to. I feel like I’ve run up against a brick wall, cause I’m still intent on finding a job, yet I can not find any place that I have not already been turned down.

Well, after a day of searching classified ads and online job searches, I have given it a rest for the night and am back here to say hi to you all and let you know what I’d been doing and thinking. Columbo is on TV right now, so I’m gonna go watch that now, after which I’ll be heading to Seventh Sanctum in search of some ideas for my 3 new book projects. Seventh Sanctum is such a great site, I get loads of ideas from them. If you haven’t checked them out yet, be sure to do so.

Treespassers OR Harassers?

I am getting really sick and tired of this. Once again we came home tonight to find that vandals  have been here. This time they took a wheelbarrle and left it across the path AND once again they have opened the gate and I found myself spending 2 hours looking for missing hens and roosters. I wish I knew who it was that is doing this. One hen got killed by a hawk because of these bastards. They are in a fenced in yard for a reason! To keep them safe from predators! I want my hands around their necks, and I want to know why are they doing this to us. Where is the logic in any of this? What is wrong with these people? Who the hell are they? What do they want? Sick bastards who  ever they are. Sooner or later they’ll slip up and we’ll chatch them in the act.

Why Do You Blog?

Why do you blog? That is a very good question. I’m glad you asked, cause it makes me stop and evaluate myself. I like doing that. Now I have to stop and think. Why do I blog? Okay, let’s see.

I think it’s a “multi-task” reason. First off, I started blogging because I just wanted to have a place where I could talk about any subject that popped into my head. At the time I had just started building websites, and I found out than how longwinded I could get. No, that’s not true…. I already knew how longwinded I was. I’ve have pen-pals since the 1980’s, more than 70 of them from all over the world. My average letter to each person was 20 pages long and I wrote on both sides for a total of 40 written pages. I wrote a letter a day, on top of my fiction/book writing. I was a teenager in the 1980’s and I was writing to other teenagers. Sadly, one by one, my pen-pals grew up, got married, had kids, and eventually we all stopped writing to each other. I went from writing to 70 people to writing to 2 people. I started feeling very lonely. I transfred from pen snail mail to email in 1997. By 2004 blogging was becoming the “in thing” so I tried it out as well, and it quickly took the place of my pen-pal writing.

So, I guess you could say, blogging was my way of communicating to people worldwide, when pen-paling went out of fashion. Like when I was pen-palling though, I keep my blogging and my book/fiction writing separate. I do not think of them as the same things. One I do because I’m obsessively compelled to write about the characters that are in my head, I have to get them out on paper, otherwise I’d never be able to do anything else; I have never felt that I had control over my books, but that the characters themselves take over.

The other (blogging) I do, because I am driven by the desire to just talk about whatever topic I may want to talk about. As those who have today, meet me face-to face know, my actual ability to speak is rather limited due to the fact I grew up in a family where speaking was almost forbidden, and topics one could talk about were limited to The Bible or the Book of Mormon and pretty much nothing else. The result was I rebelled against them by writing to people outside the confines of our family: pen-pals and later blogging.

Last year when I got my job at Macy’s I was faced with something I had never anticipated: the telephone. This is not a thing that I had used more than a couple of times in my entire life. The first few times it rang, I did not answer and my boss was quite upset with me. I had not realized that I was supposed to answer, she had not told me that use of a phone was to be part of my job, and when I did answer it, I found it very difficult to use, never having used one before. This causde me to be chided by the other girls who I worked with, girls 10 to 15 years younger than me, girls who asked, how can you have never used a phone before? Girls who found reason to force me to speak as a result. My answer was quite simple, I have never needed to use a phone before, I don’t talk, I write. At work they questioned my working and never taking a break to talk with either costumer or worker. My answer again, was the same. I do not talk, I write, I was there to do my job, not talk, I had no reason to talk and saw it as a waste of time that distracted from my work. My job at Macy’s was my first real face-to-face contact with people outside of family or my family’s church, I had not realized how much people talk. Nor had I realized that getting a job would involve the act of talking or phoning. When I want to talk to some one I write them a letter, that is what I have always done. Now with the online world, people no longer answer my letters, they respond only to tell me their phone number or email adress, neither phone nor email I use, and so instead I write a new post on one of my 12 blogs. For me blogging is a form of communication, that takes the place of talking, talking being a thing which I don’t really like to do, simply because I’m not used to doing it. Blogging is, for me, what I suppose you would call “talking”, which is why I do not consider blogers to be writers..

And there in lay the difference I find between blogging and writing. Writing is something that I do to write books, as I have been doing since 1978. Writing is the creation of stories, while blogging is just me talking to you. That’s why I blog, to “talk“ not to write.

My other reason to blog, is to teach people what I know about writing. Writing takes up 90% of my time. I spend about 8 hours a day asleep, 2 or 3 hours a day taking care of the animals, and the rest of those 13 hours I spend writing, either on paper for my books or online for my blogs. I have been doing this for 27 years now. My life evolves around writing, the result of my writing so much, so often, is that I’m often asked for my advice about writing, thus how my blog turned into a blog devoted to helping other to become writers and why most of the posts on my blog are devoted to teaching others how to write.

That is why I blog.

“Where do you come from?”

When people ask me that question I never know how to answer and usually I say something like this:

I was born in Maine, USA;

my dad’s grandfather was Cherokee; his other grandfather was the serveral greats grand son of Thomas Rodger, friend of Capt John Smith and founder of our town, settler of the land on which we still live)

my mom’s mother was Kickapoo;

my mom’s dad was Canadian; his mom was British (and her dad was Capt John Drake… several greats grandson of Sir Francis Drake the Dragon) and his dad was Scottish

I can go on like this tracing my ancestors all the way back to the 1300’s… several inter racial marriages one after the other for a period of 700 years… so what am I? A hell of a mixed up mess  born and raised in the mixed up state of Maine, living on land that has been in our family for more than 300 years… I just tell people I’m a Maine-iac and leave it at that.

Spring In Maine

It’s a nice warm spring day in April in Maine. I bet you can tell, that is if you can see through the driving snow outside your window. Yep, it’s April, and right on schedual is our annual snowstorm. Jim Thomas and Ken Shoop must be ripping their hair out right now. More snow mean longer snow on the ground and a longer time we got to stop them from stealing the Goldeneagle (my 1964 Dodge 330 which they have said must be junked as soon as the snow melts, otherwise the town of Old Orchard Beach well fine us $2,500 a day for each day we refuse to remove it.)

Image
Image

For those of you who do not know The Goldeneagle is the heart and soul of The Twighlight Manor series. If not for this car, none of the books would ever have been written. Back in 1978 when the first volum was written their were 4 characters: EelKat, Sir Roderic, Emporer Blue, and Captain Goldeneagle a.k.a Etiole. Captain Goldeneagle was the character based on this car, the character that would go on to be the most celebrated and most contraversal of the entire series: Etiole. The car itself has been featured again and again thoughout the series. It is an icon with fans of the series. An icon who is now threatened on the latest method of harassment that Jim Thomas and Ken Shoop have brought down on our family. (and ours is not the first they have done this to, they have a long history of doing this!)

First they put my dad in the hospital in a coma.

Than they force us to live in a tent during Maine’s sub-zero winter.

Than they threaten our pets.

Now they threaten my car.

And I continue to wonder: when well this end? When well someone put a stop to this man’s reign of terror? Why does everyone turn a blind eye to what they are doing?

~~EK

Treespassers

We came home today to find that someone had tresspassed onto our land, let the hens lose, moved to lawn chairs from one side of the yard to the other, dragged our trash barrels from the back yard to the front yard, uncovered the Goldeneagle, and appaerently “threw” our shovels, rakes, and hoes out into the garden. I have no idea who did this or why, but I must say it does not make me happy to know that they did this.

Writing Tip of the Day: March 29, 2007: Critics

When you receive critical advice or feedback about your writing, learn to evaluate it then follow your instincts.

Get feedback, any and all feedback, about your story. Feedback is important, it well tell you more about yourself and your writing style than you really want to know, but it’s a lesson worth learning.

Listen to those who praise your work, but listen with an open mind. Think about this: ask yourself who is giving the good feedback and what’s in it for them?

Is your family? Your best friends? Do they really know good writing when they read it, or are they just glowing with pride because they know you? Feedback from your friends and family is rarely worth listening too, because unless your mom is an editor from Harlequin or Doubleday, chances are good that she is just fanning your vainity. Harsh? Yes, but true.

What about the bad feedback you are getting from friends and family, should you believe it? No. Chances are good that they are jealous and spiteful, and want to put you down and make you feel bad, and really have nothing good to say about anything in your life anyways.

So what does that all mean? Well, what it means is, never have someone who knows you personally give you feedback on your stories, cause it well not be objective. Yes, get their feedback, but no, don’t rely on it to determ if yours is the next best seller.

You want feedback from editors, agents, book reviewers, talk show hosts, and newspaper critics. They get paid to give writers feedback. Impossible? No. All it takes is sumbitting your manuscript to as many places as you can think of. Here’s one to get you started: Harlequin Romance Novel Critique Service, finding others is as easy as saying Google.

So, where has all this taking us?

  • #1 get feedback from everyone: family, friends, online groups, & profesionals

  • #2 consider who is giving the feedback and what their motive is

  • #3 do you see a pattern in feedback given, regardless of who gave it? if you get the same feedback over and over again from everyone, than they may be right and you might want to look at that point harder

  • #4 when all is said and done, it’s your work, your story, your characters, your book, not theirs… you only need to change what you think really needs changing

Think about every feedback you get from every possible angle and than act accordingly, based on what YOU feel is best for YOU and YOUR book

I know what my characters are doing and why, and where that well lead them… you tell me to change them and you’ll get a roaring lion on your hands, but you want to tell me about my grammer/style/spelling mistakes, (and I do make them, I admit it) I’ll take note and try to improve with willing ears.

I get most of my attacks, not on my style, but on one of my reoccuring characters who is a drag queen, and those attacks come not from my readers, but from close friends and family who think I am “ruining their good name”… ??? … whatever,

Everyone has a bone to chew, and you can be sure that the more famous you get the more “hate mail” you’ll get too, it comes with the job

to all you writers out there: good luck on your story, and be sure you got a hard shell… we writers need it if we want to stay in the game

Writer’s Debate Team: Is Working At Home For You?

When one dreams of being a writer, one often forgets that writing is a career, not a hobby. This can lead to problems down the road, esp. when one is not used to working at home. So, I have created this topic to help you to do a little self-evaluateing. Read it, think it through, than write about your answer and how you came by it.🙂 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ )

Is Working At Home For You?

What are common problems that you might encounter?

What can you expect from a job out of your own home?

Have you assessed your potential for working at home happily?

You well be working for yourself. Can you be your own boss?

Going it on your own. What does it take? Do you have it in you?

Are you self-motivated?

Are you a self-organizer?

Are you able to manage your time effectivly?

How good are you at keeping a buget?

If you are married, can you manage work and family and not let one interfere with the other?

Town Begins Investigation of Manager

What follows is a copy of a news article from a Maine newspaper: Portland Press Herald. If you haven’t done so already, please read last month’s post: Government Corruption: Town’s Harasment of Disabled Senior Goes Too Far!for more information regarding the series of events in the lives of just one of the families that this man has tormented.

Town Begins Investigation of Manager

Jim Thomas’ management style has led to complaints in Old Orchard Beach

By Seth Harkness;Staff Writer, Portland Press Herald York Edition March 15, 2007 copyright 2007 Blethen Maine Newspapers Inc.

OLD ORCHARD BEACH_ The Old Orchard Beach Town Council voted Wednesday night to hire a lawyer to examine complaints against Town Manager Jim Thomas. The councilors did not name the employee under investigation when they voted unanimously to hire Brunswick attorney Martin Wilk “in connection with a personal matter”, and no councilors would publicly confirm the town manager was involve. But in the last six weeks the town council has held two closed door meetings to discuss personal issues, neither of which were attended by Thomas. The Old Orchard Beach town charter requires the town manager to “attend the meetings of the Town Council, except when the Manager’s removal is being considered.”

Before the meeting, Town Council Chairmen Joe Klein was asked whether the personnel matter on Wednesday night’s agenda involved Thomas. “That’s a logical deduction,” he said.

As recently as last fall, the council extended Thomas’ contract and gave him a raise. Many people also credit the town manager, a Lewiston native who was hired in 2003, with helping to improve the appearance of downtown and attracting a new wave of economic development.

However, what some describe as Thomas’ headstrong style of dealing with town employees and members of the public has credited conflict, both in Old Orchard Beach and at his previous manager’s job in Sterling, Colo.

Thomas was fired from the Colorado position in December of 2002 after four months on the job, according to Frank Gower, a city councilor in Sterling for the past nine years. “He didn’t get along with employees and it was like his way or the highway,” said Gower. “He’s a good visionary man, but I think his management style left a lot to be desired. It was a conflict type management style like I’ve never seen before.”

Some former town employees in Old Orchard Beach said they had similar experiences while working for Thomas.

Tim Braun was director of Public Works in Old Orchard for six years and is now town engineer in Gorham. Braun left his position in Old Orchard one year after Thomas arrived, he said, because he could not tolerate working with the town manager. Braun described Thomas as a temperamental boss, prone to delivering orders and threatening employees with the loss of their jobs.

“He uses the authoritarian model,” Braun said. “I was reminded that I was an employee at will. There wasn’t any mincing of words.”

Thomas did not respond to requests for an interview Wednesday.

In September of 2005 the Town Council discussed residents’ complaints that the town manager had shown a lack of respect toward individuals and a disregard for public opinion. The council took no action at that time and Thomas said that his efforts to improve the town were bound to upset some people.

One recent controversy involving Thomas occurred last week when two town councilors, Jim Long and Robin Dayton, questioned the legality of a closed-door meeting in which they said Thomas urged the council to extend a contract with Poland Spring.

Thomas also was accused of running afoul of freedom of information laws during his tenure in Colorado. In October of 2002, the Journal Advocate, a daily newspaper in Sterling, published an editorial that chastised Thomas for refusing to release a copy of minutes from a city staff meeting. The paper also criticized Thomas for a policy requiring city employees to answer questions from the press only in writing.

Despite the controversies, a majority of the Old Orchard Beach Town Council voted in October to extend Thomas’ contract through June 2008 and raise his salary to $92,000.

This Day in History: March 13

March 13 is an interesting day; here are a few examples:

On March 13 in 1781, German born English astronomer Sir William Herschel discovered the seventh planetfrom the sun, Uranus.

On March 13 1887, Chester Greenwood of Maine recieved a patent for earmuffs.

On March 13, 1964 Catherine Genovese was killed in the Kew Gardens Community of Queens, NY, while 38 of her friends and neighbors, “not wanting the get involved” watched for nearly 30 minutes as the girl was repeatedly stabbed by her 29 years old attacker. Others, outraged by her friends’ testamony declared March 13 “Good Samaritan Day”, a day to emphasize the importance of unselfish aid to those who need it.

What happened to this girl reminds me of our family. Dozens of people, possibly hundreds, know what has been happening to our family, and yet, no one well help us, no one well do anything to stop it, even when we have begged and pleaded for help from everyone we can think of, still no one well help us and thier reason is always the same: “It’s not my place to get involved.” Most of those would say this claim to be Christians. Now I ask you, in view of this being Good Samaritain’s Day, “What would Jesus do?”

Copper Cockeral Introduces it’s New Blog: Xavier’s Nest

The following is an introductory quote from Xavier’s Nest:

Copper Cockeral Cards & Gifts began in November of 2003 when I got this computer I ue today and the free printer that came with it. I had the printer set up in less than an hour and by the end of the day I had gone through 2 reams of paper and card stock, after printing up hundreds of sample designs for cards, stationary, and what not. The printer being also a scanner, ment that I had set out to scanning all of my paintings into the computer as well. One of those paintings I call, The Copper Cockeral. It’s a close up of a rooster’s head, painted an aged copper green-blue. I shrunk it down to a tiny logo and printed it on the back of everything I printed up. A month later I was printing up Christmas cards for paper carriers to hand out o their customers, as task which I continued to do for the next 3 years. And so began Copper Cockeral’s early days as poor quality printed off a free printer. I was happy that I had gotten this business off and running, but I was very displeased with the quality. I went on to test out the quality of four more printers and every type of paper I could find, but still none meet my standerds of perfection.

In the meantime however, I discovered an online printer called Zazzle, who would take my designs and put them on thier products, allowing me to build a website to sell them on. I was intreged and quickly set up my own Zazzle Gallery. In those days Zazle offered 3 products: cards, plain white t-shirts, and posters. Today Zazzle has expanded their line to include buttons, bumper stickers, silk ties, t-shirts in every color imaginable, US Postage stamps, keyrings, posters, framed prints, mugs, hats, totebags, and lots more. As they expand their line, so too does Copper Cockeral.

My income with Zazzle has been hit and miss, mostly due to the fact that they do nothing to promot your line. It’s up to you to do that, marketing and advertising was not something I was interested in, I was more interested in creating the products than promoting them, and back than, the Space Dock 13 Network did not yet exist.

Displeased with the slow sale of Zazzle (and still not marketing on my own) I set out in search of another printer. This time I found CafePress. CafePress, at the time, only had 14 products; today they have 90. Compareing CafePress’s 14 products to Zazzle’s 3, I realized that there was so much room for me to expand the Copper Cockeral line. CafePress not oonly had cards and t-shirts, but they also had clockes, cups, and ceramic tile jewerly boxes. Copper Cockeral expanded.

Today Copper Cockeral embraces both Zazzle and CafePress, offering over 60 designs each on more than 150 products. While most of the line is still designed by me (Wendy C. Allen / EelKat), there are 4 others also creating designs: my three brothers and our mom.

Starting on February 16, 2007, Copper Cockeral now has it’s own web site, still under construction as I type this, but online and taking orders.

This site which you are reading right now, is the blog for Copper Cockeral, named Xavier’s Nest, in memory of the long line of real copper cockerals all named Xavier that have lived on our farm over the years. The original Xavier was Xavier Logan, a character out of my Twighlight Manor series: a wild rock star from planet Flame, most noted for his long firey-red hair and his neon yellow clothes trimmed in pink. In 1989, our farm expanded to include a flock of 25 bantam roosters, which saddly got lost in the mail, and shipped to us 3 days late, with all but one having died. That one went on to become my first Xavier, the first of many. Xavier roosters are always green-eyed Partrige Cochins, a rare mutation, with brilliant green eyes and bright firey red feathers, that oddly resemble Xavier Logan, for whom they are named.

Well that’s weird… there was supposed to be a Flash Panel on this post.  I guess Flash/Jave Script doesn’t work on WordPress. Oh Well.
