Whuppity Scoorie (2015)

On March 1 every year, Lanark‘s parish church bell rings exactly at 6 p.m., after a four-month silence. As the bell begins to ring, children in this Scottish town parade three times round the church, dangling pieces of string with paper balls attached at the other end. Then they start striking one another with the paper balls in a play fight. Once pennies are tossed to the ground, the children rush to collect them. One explanation for the origin of this festival is that it can be traced back to pagan times, when people believed that making a great deal of noise would scare away evil spirits. More… Discuss

Brightly colored detergent pods containing concentrated laundry soap have sent more than 700 children in the US to the hospital in the two years since the pods became widely available there, and poison control centers have fielded thousands of calls from worried parents and caregivers whose charges have been exposed to or ingested the contents of these packets. Some manufacturers have already altered their packaging to make the pods safer for children, and this seems to have had some positive effect, but it is still advisable to store such products out of the sight and reach of youngsters. Having access to video chat technology reduced stress levels for kids who lived an average of 35 miles from the hospital and were only hospitalized for about five days. A weeklong Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) sting operation spanning the US has led to the arrest of 281 pimps and the rescue of 168 children from sex traffickers. Approximately 400 law enforcement agencies in over 100 cities took part in Operation Cross Country VIII, part of the FBI’s Innocence Lost National Initiative, which, since its inception in 2003, has recovered approximately 3,600 children and gained 1,450 convictions against those exploiting them. St. Gregory, a sixth-century monk who became pope, is also the patron saint of schoolchildren and scholars. In Belgium, schoolchildren rise early on March 12 and parade through the streets dressed as “little soldiers of St. Gregory.” They carry a big basket for gifts and are accompanied by a noisy drummer. The young girls in the procession wear big shoulder bows that resemble the wings of a butterfly. Attentive Older Siblings

Studies show that children from larger families score more poorly on tests of IQ, vocabulary, and other academic indicators than kids from smaller families. Experts attribute this in part to reduced parental attention resulting from the need to divide time and attention among the children. This effect appears to be mitigated in families where older siblings are attuned to their younger siblings’ abilities and interact positively with them. Hugh Lofting (1886)

Lofting was a British-born author and illustrator best known for his classic children’s books about Doctor Dolittle—a gentle, eccentric physician who shuns human patients in favor of animals, whereupon he learns to speak the language of animals. A civil engineer-turned-writer, Lofting created the Dolittle character to entertain his children in letters he sent home from the front during WWI. Sarah Trimmer (1741)

Trimmer was a British writer and critic of children’s literature. Books written specifically for children had only become popular around 1730, and Trimmer helped to define the genre through her periodical The Guardian of Education. Her interest in education came from teaching her 12 children. Devoutly religious, she wrote her own scripture lessons, condemned fairy tales, and supported Sunday schools. Don’t Worry, This Won’t Hurt a Bit

It is natural to want to reassure children during medical procedures, but it may be better to refrain from doing so. A study of children’s anxiety during dental visitssuggests that placating words from nurses actually raise their stress levels rather than lowering them. Comments like “Don’t worry; it won’t hurt” or “It’s not going to last much longer” distress children by drawing attention to the negative aspects of the treatment. Kids seem to do better when they receive praise instead. For example, if a child opens his or her mouth, the nurse could say, “Well done for opening your mouth wide!” More…Discuss

Mothers are often criticized for “babying” their youngest child, but we should cut them some slack—they may not be able to help it. Researchers say mothers can estimate the height of their older children with a fair degree of accuracy but consistently underestimate the height of their youngest child by an average of 3 inches (7.5 centimeters). Spare the Rod Lest You Spoil the Child

Evidence is mounting that parents should not put too much stock in the age-old adage “spare the rod and spoil the child.” In a recent study, researchers linkedspanking in early childhood to later behavior problems,aggressiveness, and even slight vocabulary deficits. Experts suspect that children who are spanked are more inclined to use their fists rather than their words to solve problems because this is the sort of behavior that has been modeled for them. It is less evident why spanking might hinder vocabulary development, but one possibility is that parents who spank may speak to their children less often than parents who use other forms of discipline. Parents who access their babies’ health records online are more likely to take their children to all of their recommended well visits and may also be more likely to keep youngsters up to date on their vaccinations. This does not mean that viewing these health records compels parents to take their children for regular checkups. After all, it is possible that parents who take advantage of these sorts of tools are simply more proactive than others when it comes to their children’s healthcare. The tooth fairy seems to have lost her head in recent years, spending wildly to expand her collection of baby teeth. A study by financial services company Visa finds that the going rate for a tooth in the US these days is $3.70 on average, well above the quarter many of us remember finding under our pillows. Some kids get even more. Six percent of tooth fairy representatives—otherwise known as parents—shell out $20 per tooth, while two percent leave an outrageous $50 or more.
