Ferguson riots victim stunned by $200K donations in 24 hours

A crowdfunding campaign has helped raise thousands of dollars for Natalie DuBose after her shop was looted in the Ferguson riots

A shop owner whose business was vandalized in riot-hit Ferguson admits she is “overwhelmed” after receiving a flood of donations.

Natalie DuBose was pictured weeping outside her bakery shop as violence erupted in the Missouri city this week.

Kind-hearted strangers have donated more than $215,000 (£135,000) in just 24 hours to help the mother-of-two.

The windows of her business, Natalie’s Cake‘s & More, were smashed and equipment damaged by looters.

Ms DuBose initially hoped to raise $20,000 (13,000) through her #GoFundMe campaign to help pay for repairs to her shop, which only opened in June.

The first American Thanksgiving was entirely religious and took place on December 4, 1619, but most Americans think of the first “official” Thanksgiving as the one that took place at Plymouth Colony in October 1621, a year after the Pilgrims first landed on the New England coast. Today, Thanksgiving is a time for family reunions and traditions, most of which center around the preparation of an elaborate meal featuring turkey and a dozen or so accompanying dishes. Garland Day

On Old May Day, the children of the Dorset fishing village of Abbotsbury still “bring in the May” by carrying garlands from door to door and receiving gifts in return. Each garland is constructed over a frame and supported by a broomstick, which is carried by two young people around the village. Later, the garlands are laid at the base of the local war memorial. At one time this was an important festival marking the beginning of the fishing season: fishermen rowed out to sea after dark and tossed the garlands to the waves with prayers for a safe and plentiful fishing season. Senators Demand the Military Lock Up American Citizens in a “Battlefield” They Define as Being Right Outside Your Window

While nearly all Americans head to family and friends to celebrate Thanksgiving, the Senate is gearing up for a vote on Monday or Tuesday that goes to the very heart of who we are as Americans. The Senate will be voting on a bill that will direct American military resources not at an enemy shooting at our military in a war zone, but at American citizens and other civilians far from any battlefield — even people in the United States itself.

Senators need to hear from you, on whether you think your front yard is part of a “battlefield” and if any president can send the military anywhere in the world to imprison civilians without charge or trial.
