The Road Less Traveled

Popping more pills into his mouth, he groaned. Having a migraine was certainly not the best way to start off the week.

Micah made his coffee as strong as possible, hoping it would help. He had tossed and turned most of the night. It was no surprise that he had a migraine. This important decision that he had to make was taking a toll on him. At least he didn’t have to go into the office until Wednesday.

He would try to get some computer work done today but would take it easy most of the day. With hope that his migraine would completely go away.

Later that afternoon, the migraine finally went away, enabling him to get a little more work done.

The big decision loomed in his brain no matter how much he tried to concentrate on other things. It was always there.

Shutting down the computer, he decided to call it a day. Maybe if he got a good night’s sleep, he would take a walk in the woods tomorrow. Perhaps it would help him make a decision. Whether it did or not, there was no doubt that it would be better than working.

The real estate agent wanted a call by the end of the week, so he didn’t have much time left to decide.

He felt like he had found his dream home, only it wasn’t without its problems. Was he crazy to want to buy it?

The house needed repairs, but it was right by a lake. He couldn’t ask for a better view.

What if the repairs added up to more than what he was thinking. Would it be worth it? He would want to make sure to find trustworthy contractors and not be left with something half finished and his money gone.

After some brain numbing television, Micah went to bed early. The migraine had left him exhausted. It didn’t take him long to fall asleep.

The next morning, he was glad to wake up feeling much better. He packed a water bottle and some food to snack on, preparing to go for a hike in the woods.

He would hike for a few hours and then go back to the house and get some work done.

The cool air and smell of the crisp leaves as he walked, invigorated him. His head was beginning to clear, He wouldn’t debate about buying the house today. Today was a decision free day. Instead, he would soak in the moment and breathe.

About a half hour later, Micah came to a fork in the woods. Which way should he go? It looked like he would have to make at least one decision today.

He turned to the left and followed that path. The trees along it were vibrant with color. More so than the trees he had passed before. It gave the path a magical feeling and he was glad he had chosen it.

The path wound around the woods, and Micah kept walking. He had walked in these woods many times, but something felt different this time. He didn’t know how to explain it, but he walked with the expectation of something special ahead, though he had no idea of what it would be.

The path kept going, and Micah kept walking. He had been out longer than planned, but he wasn’t tired and had no intention of turning around. He was approaching another fork in the road up ahead. This time, he turned to the right, the leaves covered the path, as if no one had walked down that way in quite awhile. Was that the sound of water that he heard?

The sound grew louder as he walked. He felt like he was walking close to the ocean. But that was crazy. Who goes for a walk in the woods and ends up at the ocean?

What was happening? Micah was stunned speechless. He was no longer walking beside autumn trees, but found himself beside the sea.

The salty sea air was wonderful, but how did he get here? He was so confused. Maybe his coffee had been a little too strong this morning. Was he imagining all of this?

“Hi! You are right on time. Are you ready to see the house?”

Micah stared at the fiery red-haired woman in front of him. She was average height with some light freckles across her cheeks. Who was she?

“Excuse me, what house?” Micah asked.

“Aren’t you here to see the house up there?” She pointed to a lovely house that overlooked the sea.

“I think you dropped this.” The lady handed him a shiny silver cowbell. Now Micah was really befuddled. He never had a cowbell, but the house did catch his eye, not to mention the pretty redhead smiling at him.

“Thanks.” He accepted the cowbell from the lady.

“Yes, I would like to see that house, please. My name is Micah.”

“Wonderful. My name is Sarahbelle, follow me.”

Micah followed her down the path and up the hill to reach the house. He was in awe as they toured the house. Now, this was his dreamhouse! It was in perfect condition and by the sea.

This house must be meant for him.

“All you need to do is sign on the dotted line, and the house is yours.” Sarahbelle said.

Was it really that simple?

“You can’t put a price on a view like this. Come, look out the window.”

He walked over to the window and gasped. There was a puffin! He looked down in his hand at the cowbell. This thing had to be magical and if he was dreaming, he didn’t want to wake up. He was glad that he had chosen the path in the woods that he did. As Robert Frost would say, “I took the one less traveled by and that has made all the difference.”

“I will take the house.”

This has always been a favorite poem of mine by Robert Frost from the time I read it when I was young. We stopped and saw his house in New Hampshire, while on vacation. He had a poetry trail in the woods behind the house, which made for an enjoyable walk to stretch our legs.

Friday’s Super Short Stories!

My husband asked me if I remembered how to cook … I told him I may not … But its alright, because we are on a salad diet, though we should be okay … Vacation food is automatically zero calories, right?

My heart goes out to all those who were in the path of the recent hurricane … Nature can really wreck havoc sometimes!

The pictures below will show you why I wanted to visit Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. Don’t worry, no more sad pictures from the cemetery, like yesterday’s post.  We didn’t expect the cemetery to be as large as it was. My dear husband walked with me as we searched for Authors Ridge …

The road went on and on, up, down and around.

Eyes of Blue

It was a slow day at the mercantile. Usually, a slow day would bother Amos, but not today.  Slow days pretty much added up to making a small bundle of cash, which wasn’t good, but today Amos didn’t mind.

Today his mind was filled with thoughts of his young bride.  They had only been married for two years and he still couldn’t believe that she had chosen him.

He remembered the first time she walked into the mercantile. She was wearing a blue hat that matched her blue dress, setting off the beauty of her cerulean blue eyes.

Amos chuckled as he remembered the little conversation they had that day. He replayed it in his mind.

“Excuse me, how much for some sugar?”

You can have some for free.” He leaned forward,  couldn’t stop staring at her red lips.He was smitten.

Oh, how kind of you. Make it five pounds please.”

Wh-what??” He drew back in surprise.

She fluttered her eyes with a big smile. “Five pounds of sugar, please.”

Oh, yeah, right. Coming right up.” Amos straightened himself up, feeling like a fool.

The bell rang, bringing him back to the present as a customer walked in.

Amos smiled as he walked out from behind the counter.

“What can I do for my favorite mother-in-law?”

Rose shook her head with a hint of a  smile.

“I need a pound of sugar and flour please “

Amos scooped the flour and sugar into two separate bags and handed them to Rose.

“Don’t forget to come tonight.” Rose said.

“For my sweet Lucy’s favorite birthday cake. I wouldn’t miss it.”

He gave Rose a hug, and her eyes misted.

“Thank you.” She squeezed his hand and walked out the door.

A few more customers came through the door, keeping Amos busy, but when they left, his mind drifted back in time once again.

Lucy had looked like an angel in the finest blue material wedding dress that she made for herself.

That day, he felt like the luckieat man in the world for making Lucy his bride.

The feeling didn’t fade as they started their life together. There were days her eyes were a stormy blue due to him acting like a fool. But she could never stay mad at him for long.

They had a happy life, and then Lucy started feeling real weak and dizzy. Amos was so scared. She was often pale.

She had promised him to come straight to the mercantile after seeing the Dr. Like today, he hadn’t been able to concentrate on work. His mind drifted back again.

Amos felt his chest tighten as Lucy walked in. What had the Dr told her? He couldn’t read her face. She was quiet as she walked over to him and gave him a kiss.

What did the Dr say?”

The candy jar is almost empty.”

Amos gave her a strange look. “The candy jar can wait. What did the Dr say?”

Lucy put her hand on her hip. “This candy jar better always be full, for when our little girl or boy wants to come see Daddy and ..”

His heart quickened. What was she talking about?

She leaned in and whispered in his ear.

He was going to be a Daddy! Lucy was pregnant.

Amos wiped a stray tear. They had been so excited! They were going to be a family of three.

Business picked up in the last two hours. He totaled the day’s sales and got ready to go. He couldn’t be late for his sweet Lucy’s birthday dinner, but he had a stop to make first.

He walked down the all too familiar path.

“Happy Birthday, sweetheart! Oh, how I miss you. Give our little Clara a kiss for me.”

**These photos are from Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Massachusetts. It was interesting seeing graves from the 1800s, and some made me sad, like little Clara. There was a simple grave besides hers that said Mother and my imagination kicked in. The real reason we visited this cemetery is a surprise that will come later. **

Tuesday’s Thoughts

Brad’s picture of the Portland Headlight

Happy Tuesday! Due to being afflicted with Vacation-itis the quotes are shorter today. Don’t worry I bave it on good authority that a cure for vacation-itis needs to be found due to my husband’s wallet being afflicted with weight loss. Normal blogging routine will soon return with a heart full of memories. ❤️

Apples and Love

Once upon a hill, there was a young, fair maiden who was twirling around with a song in her heart.

Young Selena was in a world of her  own. Totally oblivious to her cousin walking towards her, until … Oomph!

Selena collided with Patricia. “Sorry, I didn’t see you.”

“Well, if you weren’t so busy twirling about, you would have seen me coming.” Patricia frowned at her as she picked up the apples that  had fallen out of the basket when Selena bumped into her.

“Don’t be such a sourpuss. You need to lighten up some. Smile more  You are always so serious. What are some of your favorite things to dream about? What do you long for? What wish do you hope comes true?”

“You really want to know my big dream?”

“Yes!” Selena’s eyes lit up.

Patricia plopped the basket of apples into her arms. “You can take these to market today to sell.”

Selena staggered at the sudden weight of the basket thrust into her arms and watched Patricia walk away.

“Oh, Selena, guess what?” Patricia called.

“What?”

Turning around Patricia faced Selena. “I am smiling.” With a small mocking laugh, she turned back around and walked away.

“When the dog bites, when the bee stings…” Selena muttered to herself as she headed to the market.

After walking five miles to market, Selena wasn’t feeling like singing anymore.

Two hours passed, and Selena had sold only three apples. Ugh!

“Raindrops on roses and warm purring kittens ….” she softly sang to herself and then stopped. Maria was wrong. Singing  about your favorite things doesn’t always help.

“Watch out!”

Selena’s head jolted up. She must have dozed off in the hot sun.

Her eyes widened as a brown cow came barreling down the street towards her. Selena stepped back and, in her hurry, spilled her basket of apples.

Why was a crazy cow running down the street, and was she losing it, or had the cow winked at her as it passed by?

His large hands picked up a couple of  apples.

“That will be $2, please?” She told the guy.

When he placed them in her basket, she realized he was only trying to help her.

“Thank you, sir.”

“Sir? I don’t think I am that much older than you.” His kind eyes smiled at Selena as he placed an apple in her hand.

Selena’s face warmed, “I am sixteen going on seventeen.”

Oh gosh, had she really said it that way.  She looked down, avoiding eye contact for a little.

Their hands touched as they both put apples in the basket. Her arm tingled. Then he placed his fingers gently under her chin, tilting it up.

“I am eighteen going on nineteen.” There was a gleam in his brown eyes.

“So how much for your whole basket of apples?”

“You-you want to buy all my apples?”

“Would it free you up for the rest of the day?”

Selena felt dizzy, looking up at his winsome smile.

“I-I think it would.” She replied with a shy smile.

“Then shall we go?” He put out his arm. They walked down the country road and passed by a green meadow.

Selena did a double take. Was that the same crazy, runaway brown cow from the market? Did it just wink at her again as they passed by?

Tuesday’s Thoughts!

Happy Tuesday! Unlike Reginald from Saturday’s post, we do not eat pbj sandwiches every day. But like Reginald, we did need some adventure! So we are off to find it. Whether you are off on adventure or going through the same routine, I hope you can find some smiles and peace this week. Enjoy the quotes!
