Final Ramble of 2024

Image

2024 has been an incredible year for me both creatively and personally. I initially planned to adjust the way I process creative things and achievements by taking more time to reflect on them and for it I have grown. From better improved mental health to a lot less burnout. My outlook on this creative path is rather positive right now and that’s awesome.

This year hasn’t all just been about me because I have you to thank kind readers for joining me and also being there for me when I have needed you. From the many book reviews posted on here to other content, to have good people read my stuff really does mean a lot. Views for this blog have continually remained positive and haven’t dipped at all – that’s a huge deal and an indicator I’m going in the right direction.

In terms of wider content produced, I must acknowledge my loyal paying Patrons who have given me purpose to keep creating. This has also extended into YouTube content and indie book review videos which has been a fun endeavour. You can expect a lot more indie book talk episodes next year alongside plenty of guide based content for Patreon.

Probably my crowning moment of 2024 as a writer was to finally release something new with Last Outlaw – my book saved for a rainy day and now early release results suggest it has been one of my most successful ever. From good sales to reviews to even indie ink award nominations, this book might be a pinnacle moment for my wider indie author career.

Here’s to a great year and hope the next one is good also!

The Best Books I Have Read in 2024

During the year of 2024 I have read some wonderful books, many of which were either self published or indie. This post is dedicated to the books that stood out the most to me in 2024. Let us dive in

Image

Raw: A Memoir by Damien Linnane

Image

‘Raw’ is a unique memoir that isn’t afraid to shy away from real-life issues while also telling the uplifting life journey of writer and artist Damien Linnane. I first connected with Damien some years ago and learned part of his story which even involved time he spent in prison but there is a lot more within and it makes for a great reading experience. This is a memoir that I would highly recommend and you can read my full review here.

Three And A Half Minutes of Fame by Alex Boucher

Image

Many of the wonderful indie books I discover come from authors who approach me directly for a review and Alex Boucher did exactly that with Three and a Half Minutes of Fame. His memoir is a wonderful time capsule and homage to life as a musician in the 90s. Alex experienced indie rock band success as a young man during a great era for indie music and he succeeds in relaying a great life story with this book which pulls back the curtains of what it was like to live through it all. You can read my full review here.

The Soulburn Talisman by David McIlroy

Image

For the sheer amount of indie fantasy available, I’ll admit that I probably don’t read enough of it but every now and then I’ll dip into some and The Soulburn Talisman by David McIlroy ticks all of the right boxes for the genre. Its an easy to read, accessible for most ages and a fun tale of three classmates who find themselves lost on a school trip and then they enter another world. For anyone who likes an original world with plenty of magic then this is the one for you! My can read my full review here.

Murder at the Pirate Festival by Abigail Yardimci

Image

Cosy Murder Mystery, Pirates and British Seaside towns are an awesome combination and Murder at the Pirtate Festival by Abigial Yardimci really stuck out to me this year. There are so many awesome vibes to this tale that follows young adult ‘Paulie Trinket’ who might have indirectly witnessed a murder. What follows is an immersive journey with backstory and eventual revelations. You can read my full review here.

Death Cult by Janelle Schiecke

Image

Back in the day, one my fondest memories was going to Blockbuster and choosing a movie, most of the time a horror movie – Death Cult by Janelle Schiecke very much fits into the bracket of classic style horror story that carries those vibes. While there is homage within, there is also wider story partnered with some great description that delivers a great reading experience. There’s mystery and bloodshed and even some humour. You can read my full review here.

Rider’s Blood, Moonlit Black By Myka Silber

Image

Some of you will know that I enjoy a good western and Rider’s Blood, Moonlit Black was on my TBR list for a while. I’m glad I took the plunge into reading it this year as this haunting tale combines the concept of gunslingers with magic alongside some horror elements. The result is a great story that contains an early twist which then defines the rest of the journey. You can read my full review here.

Sly Fox Hollow: A Novel by Brett Allen

Image

Comedy and satire are very much alive in 2024 with thanks to authors like Brett Allen who presents an incredibly fun fusing of genres. From cryptozoology to politics of a small town dominated by a corporation with an election on the horizon – Sly Fox Hollow has it all and is very much worth reading for laughs and a great story. You can read my full review here.

Dark Presence: A Paranormal Thriller by John Turiano

Image

John Turiano has put together a book that combines genre in a unique and clever way with Dark Presence. For what begins as a murder mystery turns into a chilling tale with quantum science vibes that dives into the potential of the human mind. This one has everything and is well worth a read. You can find my full review here.

Brutal Moon: A Time & Fate Adventure Gamebook by Andrew Morris & Laura Dodd

Image

Space sci-fi is one of my favourite genres and when that is combined with the unique concept where readers choose the fete of a story you have Brutal Moon. I enjoyed this concept which was popular a little before my time so this was my first game book experience and one that stood out as a great reading experience. You can read my full review here.

And so that wraps up the best books I have read in 2024 which has been a great year for my personal reading goals. Shout out to all of the amazing authors who gave me something to read this year. Did you know that I also do video reviews also? You can find my YouTube Channel here.

Vote for Last Outlaw in the Indie Ink Awards

Image

Hello kind readers and thank you for stopping by. I’d like to also extend a further thank you to those who took the huge step in recently nominating my newest book Last Outlaw for several Indie Ink Awards.

To see my work embraced and held in such regard has been a dream come true for me and considering I haven’t published anything for over two years, this book represents a major comeback for an indie author who has been through some tough times. But I kept going and kept embracing fellow creatives which has led me here. Last Outlaw has been a result of gradual progress over time and has already exceeded my expectations by becoming one of my most successful releases. Now it has a chance for even more success.

Having thrown my hat in the ring, and because of that amazing support many of you have shown to nominate it, the book has now found itself in the voting stage of the Indie Ink Awards alongside plenty of wonderful indie books.

It would be very much appreciated if you could vote for Last Outlaw and help me prove how far indie books can go.

In order to vote for Last Outlaw, you will need to sign in to Indie Story Geek by creating an account which is dead easy. You’ll just need an email address and username + password. Once you are signed in, or for those already with an account, you can find the voting page here.

Below I have linked each category that Last Outlaw has been nominated for. After placing your vote, remember to click ‘save’ at the bottom of the page.

The end of this year has been incredible and it now has the potential to be the very best ever for me with your help – thank you!

Arlo and Jake Enlist: The adventure begins! by Gary Henson – Review

From retirement to an unexpected space sci-fi adventure…

Image

This was a fun and easy-to-read tale of a retiree who swaps life by the beach for something way more adventurous and it involves space sci-fi. Alongside his pet Chameleon, ‘Jake’ finds himself whisked away from a comfortable world to the unexpected setting of space. What follows is a choice to ultimately leave his former life behind and try his best to help defend the galaxy.

The dynamic between main character and his pet ‘Arlo’ makes for some entertaining reading and their witty dialogue is a fun pillar that holds up this story. Packed with humour, action and some original concepts, this book is just the beginning of an adventure and makes for some great escapism.

“Great. My pet lizard is now sprouting John Denver song lyrics. I’m almost afraid to say this, but could this get any weirder?”

Weekly Ramble #209

Image

I’ve never really won anything before for my writing and to see that my book Last Outlaw has been nominated for multiple indie ink awards is rather incredible.

Thank you to everyone who put in the effort to nominate my work – it really does mean a lot. The journey of returning to publishing hasn’t been easy and it really has been fostered by the fact I haven’t given up. From believing in myself during the darker less productive times to leaning into writing as not only a hobby but a way to work through things to also reading books by fellow indie authors and connecting with so many awesome creatives over time. Writing is something I think I will always need in order to find some kind of purpose and the creativity it presents helps with so many things. To see others have now nominated me for writing is a really wonderful thing.

Like I said in the previous ramble, this year really has been awesome and to be nominated for multiple awards is the cherry on top of quite a cake! You can expect some more information soon about the next stage of the indie ink awards.

A Dream About White Rabbit: A Horror Suspense Novella by Kristina Gallo – Review

A page turning tale with dark tones and a gritty edge…

Image

Kristina Gallo delivers a novella length page turning tale with dark tones and a gritty edge. Early on we are introduced to main character ‘Alex’ who is kind of a lost soul where she has recently received a terminal diagnosis. Her situation gives scope to embrace the perhaps more sinister side of life as she ultimately has nothing to lose but even then she meets some interesting types on her path.

Leaving her previous life behind ‘Alex’ embarks on a journey that reflects Kristina Gallo’s strengths as an author who takes readers to different places in this story. There were moments of the unexpected alongside a unique direction this book takes – a ride I would recommend.

‘She couldn’t leave this world like a loser who gave up. The world must celebrate her for doing something marvellous…’

Weekly Ramble #208

Image

With the final month of 2024 being here I’m taking the opportunity to reflect on what has been an incredible year. For all the struggles and times of hardship, there has also been some great moments and things are good right now. It might not have been easy getting here, but that’s the reflection of a journey from someone who hasn’t given up.

My new method of taking things slowly to reflect has now become a vital process in my creative and wider life. In order to grow, sometimes you need to slow down and take on just a few things at a time in order to get the very best out of them. I know that process now works for me and it has helped reach some wonderful milestones for this year.

Sometimes it isn’t about reaching any particular destination but more about being on the journey and letting that shape you for the better. Experience is a huge thing on this path and I used it this year to get through some serious anxiety struggles while also ensuring the successful release of my long awaited 9th book. I’ll be wrapping up my Goodreads reading challenge this month along with putting together a few more posts and then it’s onwards to 2025.

Rock and roll and writing!
