My First (Indoor) Duathlon

Two decades ago, I’m pretty sure I learned how to ride a bike. I mean I have a few photos, and memories of racing around my childhood subdivision. Buuuuuuutt… I kinda stopped when we moved some time ago. So, I think I forgot how to ride one. hahaha. Seriously, I haven’t been near a bike in over ten years. Unless of course, you count the ones at the gym 😛

So when I found out about the Fitness & Athletics Indoor Duathlon, I thought it would be a good chance to find out how a duathlon felt. Fortunately, I didn’t have to try hard to find somebody who would join me. Carlito also didn’t know how to ride a bike, so he was equally excited to get a chance to try a duathlon. I think this is probably a good opportunity for anyone that wants to try a duathlon in a safer environment. haha. Here’s the link to the registration page if you want to give it a try.

Our First Duathlon

There was actually a bit of a hitch when we got there. One of the bikes was having trouble, so only one of the two sets of equipment were available. I let Carlito go first so I could see how the equipment worked. hahaha. I really liked the controls on the treadmill – much easier than the usual ones with only two buttons to increase/decrease the speed. Anyway, Carlito really went for it right at the start! He was pushing that treadmill to 11-12kph. I thought to myself: Mukhang di naman kami gagabihin at this rate (We won’t be out too late at this rate).

Well, I couldn’t be more wrong. The bike was a shocker for both of us. It was a challenge for us both. It really felt heavy for Carlito right at the start – the gear must have been set really high. We also noticed how slow he was going… Well, I’m partly to blame for the wrong expectations. hahaha. Apparently, it was a really different kind from the bikes we’re used to at Moro (I can do 17-km on those bikes in 30 mins.). LOL. At some point, Carlito thought of using the Galloway method on the bike by alternating the gears. Man, I really thought it was going to be much easier XD. It was a real rough ride for Carlito, whom I’ve never even seen try the bike at the gym. I think what really helped him was the Gatorade and the store staff cheering him on and talking to him.

When Carlito was on the treadmill again, it was my turn to start on the other treadmill as well. I really love that you can charge your iPod on the it as I didn’t get to charge mine fully. I started out with a slow run at 8-9kph, then moved it up to 10-11kph when my legs felt warmed up. When it was my turn on the bike, I took Carlito’s lead on the Galloway method. When I got a feel for the gears, I then alternated between a higher gear (for 3 minutes), and a lower gear (for 1 minute). I started to feel myself slowing down at about 30-40 minutes though. Fortunately, Carlito was just in time with some food to snack on.  It really gave me the energy boost I needed, and I managed to push my bike leg to just about 75 minutes. When I finally got on the treadmill, I chose to walk a while because my legs felt like jelly. lol. That feeling was definitely a first! hahaha. After I shook off the fatigue from the bike, it was a smooth run all the way to the finish!

Thanks again to the nice folks over at Fitness & Athletics. Sorry we took so long to finish (around 11PM) XD

Tips for the Indoor Duathlon

This is probably applicable for anybody who has no experience with bikes, and duathlons like Carlito and I. hahaha.

  • Know your Gear – We were caught by surprise by the bike. hahaha. Fitness & Athletics actually welcomes participants to get a feel for the equipment beforehand.
  • Bring Friends – preferably talkative ones that will cheer you on.
  • Bring a Music Player – Kind of an alternative to the tip above if you’re a loner, or don’t want to talk while running/biking. hahaha.
  • Bring Food and Hydration – You’ll especially need it during the bike leg.

SBR.ph Triman Triathlon Photos

Congratulations to all the finishers of the recently concluded SBR.ph Tri Series! The final triathlon leg was held at Fontana, Clark last Sunday on May 26. The event featured a 1-km swim in the olympic size pool, followed by a 30-km bike, and a 5-km run. Just as last time, I was there to support “Team Daza.” In this case, however, only Kuya Sherwin was participating, with Cathy, Daryl, and I watching from the sidelines.

An unexpected surprise was to see two of my fellow batchmates from Ateneo: Daniel and Ted. Congrats to you two! Especially Ted, who saw his triathlon debut that day. Maybe I’ll join you guys someday? lol. More likely from the sidelines again, taking photos. hahaha.

I had a  noob photographer moment early on. I apparently forgot to clean up one of my SD cards, and forgot another one, in my haste to get my gear ready the night before. I cringed as I changed my camera’s setting to shoot in JPEG. T_T Time to change my workflow so this doesn’t happen again. Sorry to the ladies, but I wasn’t able to stay the whole morning. That’s why I almost have no photographs of the female participants. Also, I may have missed a few shots with Cathy being distracting. lol. Just kidding! XD

SBR.ph Duaman Duathlon Photos

Congratulations to the finishers of the second leg of the SBR.ph Tri Series! The second leg, the Duaman Duathlon, featured a 20-km bike in between two 3-km runs at Nuvali. I didn’t participate in the event as an athlete, but rather went there to support “Team Daza.” hahaha. Thanks again Cathy, and I’m pleased to finally meet you, Kuya Sherwin. 🙂

Congrats Cathy and Kuya Sherwin!

Congrats Cathy and Kuya Sherwin!

As with past running events I’ve attended, but not participated in, I took the opportunity to photograph the athletes. It was certainly interesting photographing the athletes at the transition area – something foreign to someone like me who is mainly a runner. Too bad I didn’t get a chance to take more bike photos. Oh well, one can’t be at two places at once. hahaha.

Also, you might notice that the albums are now on Monkey Saladeer Race Photography, rather than my own facebook profile. From now on, whenever I document racing events (whether running or multisport), I’ll be uploading photos for the public on that facebook page (so like it! hahaha). I know I don’t really regularly go to events to take photos as much as others, but I just thought this will make browsing for photos easier rather than finding them amongst my personal albums.

Ateneo Aquathlon 2013 Results and Photos

The Ateneo Aquathlon 2013 official race results have already been released during the past week. Photos by Karlo Lim and Jackie Cruz are also available on the Ateneo Aquathlon 2013 facebook page. Thank you to Jackie for the photos I got, both of which I have included in the gallery above along with a screenshot of my race results. I’ve gotten slightly slower from two years ago (about 2 minutes), though it’s not really a surprise considering the setback on my running.

Well, until the event schedules change, I’ll most likely be alternating this event with supporting Carlito at the Bataan Death March 102-Km Ultramarathon. Sana nga support lang lagi. No doubt, he’ll convince me to run eventually. hahaha.

That’s all for now… I’m still cooking up my next post, which will most likely be in connection to my recent trip to Taipei.

This Runner takes the Plunge: Ateneo Aquathlon 2013

The Ateneo Aquathlon is first major event of the year. I consider it a major event, in that (1) it’s my first official 5-km run coming from an injury, and (2) it’s also my second attempt at a multisport event. There’s just a different level of excitement when you try doing something new… Even if this is my second time at the Ateneo Aquathlon, it still feels like it’s my first time. I guess ganun talaga dahil di naman ako talaga regular sa multisport.

The event felt a lot like it did two years ago… While it did feel like there were a lot more participants this year, it still really felt really small and cozy. Maybe that’s just the effect of being at my alma mater though. haha. Although it’s probably because these events are really much smaller compared to the running events I’ve joined in the past with thousands of participants. Another good thing with the Ateneo Aquathlon is it’s very spectator-friendly. You can have your family and friends watch over you at the bleachers overlooking the pool! Good job also for the organizers to improve the event by using timing chips. Iba talaga ang dating pag may timing chip. I’m really excited to see if I improved from two years ago – I was really excited when I finished that I forgot to take note of my finish time. My only problem with the event is the lack of a nearby water station after the swim segment. I don’t know about the others, but I was really thirsty after the swim.

I did miss having my good buddy Carlito with me. He was off making his mark at BDM102. Congrats again to Carlito for making it to BDM102 Gold! I promise kasama na uli ako sa support in 2014. It really is a bummer that the two events are always scheduled on the same date. Anyway, I didn’t have to go to the event alone naman since Cathy was there with me. While we both share in our passion for running, it’s the first time we had been to an event together. I was really surprised to find she knew a lot of people that were there. Well, she has been around the running scene a lot longer than I. I really look forward to running with her though… and maybe more swim dates because my form is terrible. :-P. But I guess I’ll have to be content at being her waterboy at RU1 in two weeks. hahaha.
