Messenger Of The Lord

Valley of Dry Bones
The Book of Malachi
Malachi was the last of the Minor Prophets and the last book of the Old Testament! He is thought to have lived and prophesied about 470-420 BC and it is possible that he was a priest. The book of Malachi provides dialogue between God and Israel, with God yet again telling the people to come back to him and stop worshiping idols and giving vain or polluted offerings in the Temple! God rebukes the people for infidelity and the priests of corruption and treachery! But He clearly states:
“For from the rising of the sun, even to its going down,
My name shall be great among the Gentiles; In every place incense shall be offered to My name, And a pure offering; For My name shall be great among the nations,”
Says the Lord of hosts.”
The prophet goes on to declare the message of God to the people by telling them that the Messiah will be coming soon, preceded by “Elijah the Prophet”! Then will come the Day of Judgment, the Day of the Lord!

The Book of Habakkuk

Habakkuk is the seventh of the Minor Prophets of the Old Testament. It is believed that he lived in the 7th century during the reign of King Josiah, before the Babylonian Captivity. The three chapter book begins with Habakkuk pleadingly asking God why He is showing him visions of the devastating judgments that are coming on Israel. Habakkuk sees all the evil in his country, and knows what is coming and questions God as to why this is happening if God was so good? God answers Habakkuk by telling him that He will bring justice and judgement on His people for their sins allowing the Babylonians to conquer Israel for the many years that it has continuously broken their covenant with God! But Habakkuk questions God again about Israel’s punishment of destruction by Babylon! That the Babylonians are men to have done evil in God’s eyes also, and surely God will not allow them to get away with their evil deeds! God responds again, saying that the Babylonians will come and do all that God said they would do, according to God’s will but that the Just shall live by Faith! God doesn’t endorse the evil things that the nations do, but will bring about their down fall! The last chapter Habakkuk gives a powerful prayer to God for the Final Judgment against all evil!

The Book of Micah

Once again, we see that God sent another prophet to Israel just before the Babylonian Captivity to warn them of what was coming. Micah is a contemporary of Isaiah, Amos and Hosea, ministering from about 737 BC to 696 BC. He lives in a town in southern Judah called Moresheth. God brings him a message for the people of the coming judgments on the nation and surrounding nation which caused Israel to sin due to it’s evil influences. God gives prophecies of judgment against Samaria and Jerusalem. The kings of Judah and Israel were both doing what was evil in God’s sight, and the people were corrupt with idolatry and greed, even the prophets of God were corrupted by greed taking bribes! Once the prophesies are fulfilled, then the remnant will be restored in a new Jerusalem. Micah also prophesies of the coming of the Messiah ( Micah 5:2) and that through the messiah the Gentiles will be saved. These prophesies of judgment took place later and are also a warning of the final judgement that will come to the whole world. After the judgement, will come a new kingdom that will never be ended. The book of Micah ends with the pardoning grace for the sinner.

He has shown you, O man, what is good;
And what does the Lord require of you
But to do justly, To love mercy,
And to walk humbly with your God?
Micah 6:8

The Book of Amos

1620weigel20amos20the20herdsman20from20tekoa

Amos was another prophet who lived before the Babylonian Captivity, in the time of Jeroboam of Israel and Uzziah of Judah, two years before a major earthquake took place. Amos is a breeder of sheep and a fig farmer, and was not part of the school of the prophets, used to the study of scripture. He lives in Tekoa, a town near Bethlehem and the Dead Sea. The Lord comes to Amos, a simple sheepherder or husbandman, to tell him what will come to pass, what judgements He will send against the ancient cities and cultures of the Near East. God pronounces judgements against Damascus, Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Ammon, Edom, Tyre, Moab, Judah and Israel. God also tells Israel that again, they have sinned, by worshiping idols, made offerings and sacrifices to God but neglected the poor and needy, and even sold people into slavery for money even though God delivered them from slavery out of Egypt! Amos prophesies God’s judgments against Judah and Israel, as well as the surrounding nations! That they will fall and never rise again! But once again God has Amos tell the people  to come to Him and repent of their sins because they broke the covenant relationship with God and they refused to listen to His prophets who brought truth! Like the prophet Joel, Amos’ last prophecy concerns the Day of the Lord and what will take place then. Also, Amos is also given a vision of locusts that come to devour everything! Amos is given other visions as well, The Summer Fruit, The Fire and The Plumbline.

The Book of Hosea

amazinglove-a-1024x291

The Book of Hosea was originally written during the time of Israel’s division, between the house of David in Judah and Jeroboam in the North with they called Samaria. God uses marriage as a metaphor for the relationship between Israel and God. During this time, starting with Solomon to his son Rehoboam, idolatry, especially Baal worship, had infected Israel and spread through out the whole kingdom, that God brought judgments against the House of David and split the kingdom in two, the other half going to Jeroboam. But Jeroboam, who started out good, turned south fast in that he had two golden calfs created for the people of the north instead of allowing them to go to the Temple. So God comes to Hosea and tells him to marry a whore as an example of how God is married to Israel who was a maiden but became a whore by worshipping idols! Hosea’s audience is mainly the Northern Kingdom. God has Hosea tell Israel to turn back to God. That God should divorce Israel, but instead he would go after Israel to bring them back into covenant! God’s love, mercy, and commitment to us is stronger then our sin! So God will keep fighting to save us, even from ourselves! With such a God, we should come back into covenant with God.

Solomon The Wisest Man

God chooses Solomon to be king over Israel instead of his brother Adonijah who tries to make himself king. Solomon replaces the high priest, the captain of the army and other officials. At his anointing, he sacrifices offerings to God and asks for wisdom to rule over Israel. God grants his wishes my making the wisest man alive at that time and adds to this a blessing of great riches and a peaceful reign, which makes him world famous. He also marries the daughter of Pharaoh, making peace with Egypt. Immediately  afterward he begins the building of the Temple his father designed according to the specifications of God. The surrounding countries such as the king of Tyre, send Solomon cedar trees from Lebanon and skilled carpenters to help Solomon with the building of the First Temple. The First Temple was magnificent, unlike any structure on Earth, covered with cherubims, palm trees, and flowers!

Solomon had two pillars made with capstones of brass that had pomegranates and a throne of ivory, overlaid with gold, that had six steps with twelve lions. The Temple was a representation of the Temple in Heaven. Solomon also had a palace built for himself and another for his wife, the daughter of Pharaoh. After about fourteen years the Temple was finished, so Solomon had the priests bring the Ark of the Covenant to the Temple. Then Solomon assembled all the people to dedicate the temple to the Lord with sacrifices and offerings consisting of 22,000 oxen, 120,000 sheep. Gods glory filled the Temple! Afterward a feast was held for fourteen days. God appeared to Solomon a second time telling him that if him that if he continues to walk in His ways and keep His commandments, and walk in integrity and uprightness, then he will continue to prosper! But if not, Israel will lose the Promised Land! After twenty years of ruling the Queen of Sheba came to Jerusalem with a large caravan of camels laden with spices and 120 talents of gold for king Solomon. Solomon answered all her questions and she  witnessed his wisdom. She saw the Temple and its splendor. Solomon received 636 talents of gold a year! So he had 300 shields made of gold, each using 3 lbs. of gold!

Solomon loved and married many woman from the surrounding countries, which influenced him in the wrong direction! He had 700 wives and 300 concubines! He was convinced that he could convert them to the worship of GOD by going through the motions of their pagan religions. He became synchronistic, thinking he could worship God at the same time worshiping idols. This was a great sin and God brought judgment! So God allowed several men to attack Solomon. The prophet Ahijah came to a man named Jeroboam to tell him that God will give him ten tribes for him to rule over while Solomon’s son will only have one! After forty years as king Solomon dies and his son Rehoboam is made king.

Samuel Part III

David has fled to Naioth in Ramah and makes an plan with Jonathan on how to escape from Saul. David stayed away from the palace for three days to determine is his live was in danger. On the third day Saul realized that David was not in the palace, he asked Jonathan where David was. Jonathan told him he had gone home to a family worship service. Saul became angry, yelling at Jonathan telling him that David was planning to take over as king. The next morning Jonathan went out into the field where David was hiding and shot arrows, leaving one in the field as a warning to David that Saul wanted him dead. David left the place where he was hiding and with a few men left to Nob the city of priests where he met with Ahemelech to ask for bread and weapons. The only bread available was the showbread that was hallowed bread, which Ahimelech gave to David as well as the sword of Goliath. While they were with Ahemelech, a servant of Saul who was an Edomite named Doeg was there worshiping God and saw David. David moves around the country to stay out of reach of Saul and his men, hiding in the wilderness and fighting other enemies. Doeg tells Saul about seeing David, bringing Saul to hunt David to kill him until finally Saul and David come to the wilderness of Ziph, where David hides with six-hundred men. But before Saul could attack David, he was pulled away by the invasion of Philistines.

While Saul was preoccupied with the Philistines, David and his men fled to the natural stronghold and oasis of Engedi near the Dead Sea. After defeating the Philistines Saul and Jonathan come to Engedi with 3,000 men, here they encamp in a place where shepherds pin their sheep. In this place was a cave where Saul slept. Meanwhile David and his men are hiding on the other side of the mountain with the cave. So David seeing his chance, sneaks into the cave while Saul slept, he cut off a piece of his robe to show that he was never trying to harm Saul let alone Jonathan to steal the throne, even though both Saul and Jonathan knew that David had been anointed by Samuel to be king. In the morning Saul rose to leave the cave, when suddenly he hears David calling his name. He showed Saul the piece of his robe, declaring that he could have killed him but did not! Saul realized his sin, that he accused David falsely. Saul weeps and asks David to spare his family from death that he will not kill off his descendants. David promises that he will never harm Saul’s family. So Saul and his men left Engedi to go back to the palace while David, not trusting Saul, stays. At this time the prophet and high priest Samuel, dies. All of Isreal came to Ramah to mourn him. Then David travels to the Wilderness of Paran where he sends some of his men to offer help to a rich man and his wife who were shearing their three-thousand sheep in the city of Maon near Carmel. The man’s name was Nabal, a descendant of Caleb, one of the two faithful spies. But David’s men were told to leave, David took offense, he gathered four-hundred men to go confront Nabal. A servant came to Nabal’s wife Abigail and told her everything that happened. Nabal was a Baal worshiper. Wanting to stop all fighting, Abigail had her servants prepare two hundred loaves of bread and two bottles of wine and five sheep already butchered, corn, raisins, and two hundred fig cakes and had this all placed on donkeys for David. Abigail’s husband knew nothing of what was happening. Abigail to the donkeys herself to go to David to stop any fighting. As she came down the hill she met David. She came down from the donkey and fell down before his feet asking him to forgive her husband’s evil, even though Nabal worships Baal, to have mercy, that God will deal with her husband! But when David is king and God has dealt with Nabal, remember her. David blessed her and took what she brought him. Abigail told her husband everything that happened the next morning, ten days later God caused Nabal’s death for all the evil that he did! Then David sent for Abigail and married her!
