Photography 101: Edge – Saint Patrick’s Church, San Francisco

Saint Patrick's Church, San Francisco

Today’s Photo 101 is all about edges, so here’s a shot of the relatively linear architecture of Saint Patrick’s Church in downtown San Francisco. This also doubles as a test run for my first DSLR; hopefully this turned out well…

Weekly Photo Challenge: Angular, Or: Fugazi Bank Building

Fugazi Bank Building

This week’s challenge is all about angles, and I was reminded of a photo I took in San Francisco recently. The Fugazi Bank Building is named after Giovanni F. Fugazi, a prominent businessman in the 19th Century. His work helped lay the cornerstone for what the city’s Italian community has become. Though the building’s current ownership might be…questionable, its distinctive design and status as a heritage landmark are anything but.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Zigzag, Or: The Road To Hana

The Road To Hana

You want to talk zigzags? Try the legendary Road To Hana in Maui. This photo doesn’t do it nearly enough justice. Over 50 miles long with 620 curves and 59 bridges (many of which are one-lane)…and pavement just big enough for a two-lane road. This incredible feat of engineering allows people to drive along one of the most beautiful places on Earth. Where else can you see unspoiled jungle from your car? I was speechless when I saw it. If the Road To Hana isn’t on your bucket list, you need to add it.

Weekly Photo Challenge: ZigZag, Or Lombard Street Revisited

Lombard Street Revisited

Because nothing says zigzag like Lombard Street, the crookedest street ever paved.

A Little Lost

A Little Lost

Whenever I want to explore a new area of the city, I walk for a few miles and make some random turns. Getting a little lost sometimes is not necessarily a bad thing; you come to understand a place better when you have to find your way back. It also helps that San Francisco has plenty of landmarks to keep you oriented. In this case, the Transamerica Pyramid.

Lombard Street, San Francisco

Welcome to one of San Francisco’s many iconic landmarks: Lombard Street, one of the curviest roads on Earth. Not pictured: the hordes of tourists taking photos, and the ridiculously steep hill you need to climb just to reach the bottom of this wonderfully screwy spectacle.
