Witch’s Night In
Snack © Daphna Kato
the wind howling / this potent night / you want to walk out in it / do a rain dance / but it’s chilly wet / and you remember how / you frightened your neighbour / the last time /
so you stay in / play dress up / eat ice cream / ignore the phone / watch a paranormal thriller / you already know who did it / your familiar beside you / ensconced in / a glimmer of togetherness /
your space made sacred / the comforting pelt of rain / surrounding / your haven womb home / small but perfect /
your creeper plants wave at you / as you try and glean / creepy guy’s next move / damn this series is good / so is your life /

*Thank you to The Ekphrastic Review for publishing this little scribble of mine. That last line isn’t entirely true in an absolute sense as my life, like yours, is a work in progress, with various problems that demand my attention. But I have the opportunity, if not always the means or the time, to be able to address them. Rather, there’s little moments in life that remind you that it’s great to be alive. And yet thoughts of others suffering genocide and the most unimaginable tortures are never too far away from my mind whatever “normality” I am immersed in. It’s a bubble with an edge of awareness of the luxury of my “normal” life compared to the parallel hell of others. So I was hesitant to share my poem, because it seems stupid and indulgent in comparison to what Palestinians (and all others displaced, victimised and oppressed) are suffering every passing moment. And yet I share it, along with my uncensored thoughts, because, even though it’s public, I like to confide in my blog, and the real-unreal people who care to know my thoughts.
If you’d like to take part in the next Ekphrastic Review Challenge, the deadline is 19.07.24.
Wishing you well, always 💕🍉
