Across 8.2M petitions in 2025, local issues consistently outperformed national and global ones by 2x. It makes sense when you think about it. People sign petitions when they feel like the outcome is real and close to home. If your petition isn't getting traction, the issue might not be your cause, it might be how far away the decision feels. We want to hear from experienced campaigners — does local always win, or have you found ways to make a bigger cause feel urgent? Ps. We also looked into $235M in donations and 2.3B messages in 2025 to find what's working and what's quietly costing organizations money and engagement (see more of the trends linked in the comments.)

In 2020, a group of over 100 women started a WhatsApp group. Today, they're running for office in all 32 states of Mexico. Aúna Mexico began as a collective of organizers, academics, technologists, activists united by a single belief: That Mexico's political parity laws could be a turning point, not just in representation, but in transformative progressive power. From group chat to national organization, they vet candidates not simply because they are women-but because they carry a vision for justice, equality, and inclusive leadership with a particular focus on indigenous, Afro-descendant, and LGBTQ+ women who have historically been excluded from formal political life. As co-founder Monica Tapia A. puts it: Aúna is "A tangible sign that the union of diverse and committed women can generate profound and significant changes in our society." Today they have seen 27 winning candidates, 500+ applicants to their most recent cohort, and a historic 100+ women at their annual gathering. And they're just getting started. They have a Latin American consortium now in development, bringing together allied organizations in Colombia, Brazil, and Argentina. Meet Guy Citron: A vocal advocate fighting overdevelopment and discrimination at town meetings. Meet Tyler Powell: A cybersecurity expert who went from homelessness to helping protect New Jersey’s electrical grid and water systems. Together they closed a 21-point gap in a district built against them. They had no institutional backing, a limited budget, and an almost entirely volunteer operation. Turns out presence, authenticity, and the right infrastructure to organize it was the most powerful strategy they had. While they didn't flip the district this cycle, they proved it's flippable. And they're already filed for 2027. Just stepped out of the session “Bridging the Gap: Communicating Across Divides” here at the Public Affairs Council PAC Conference, representing NationBuilder, and it was one of the most thought-provoking conversations of the day. Amy McIsaac from Philanthropy for Active Civic Engagement (PACE) shared insights from PACE’s national civic language survey of US voters, exploring how people react to civic terms when they aren’t defined for them and what that means for those of us working in advocacy and engagement. A few insights I’m still thinking about: 1️⃣ “Freedom” ranked as the most positive term overall, while “authoritarian” ranked most negative. “Pluralism” was the most unfamiliar. 2️⃣ Framing changes everything. “Free and fair democracy” and “constitutional democracy” resonate more strongly than “democracy” on its own. 3️⃣ Unifying language such as community, unity, service, belonging and liberty continues to trend positively over the past four years. 4️⃣ Political party affiliation remains the strongest driver of perception differences, which makes bridging harder but not impossible when shared identities are activated. My biggest takeaway is that the words we choose don’t just communicate ideas, they signal identity and values. In an era of polarization, thoughtful framing can help close perception gaps and bridge divides rather than deepen divides. #PACConference #Advocacy #PublicAffairs #PoliticalCommunication #NationBuilder
