Legionnaires Book One Paperback – April 18, 2017

4.6 out of 5 stars (71)

Rokk Krinn of Braal. Imra Ardeen of Titan. Garth Ranzz of Winath. Three teenagers who, despite being complete strangers from member worlds within the fledgling Federation of United Planets, pool together their unique powers and abilities to thwart an assassination attempt against R.J. Brande, one of the cosmos’ wealthiest sentients. Seeing an opportunity to reshape the 30th Century and truly unify the struggling United Planets, a grateful Brande encourages his young rescuers to form the core of an interplanetary protection force—a group of young de-facto ambassadors from U.P. home worlds…

…A legion of superheroes.

Realizing Brande’s vision won’t be easy. The newly christened Legion is beset by an interfering U.P. government and uncooperative law enforcement, faced with growing cultural bigotry and xenophobia, and opposed by powerful enemies who represent grave threats to the galaxy.

So begins the adolescent adventures of the 30th Century’s greatest heroes, written by the critically acclaimed Mark Waid (THE FLASH), Tom McCraw (AQUAMAN) and Tom Peyer (BATMAN ’66), and masterfully illustrated by Lee Moder (STARS AND S.T.R.I.P.E.), Jeffrey Moy (STAR TREK/LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES) and many others. Collects LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES #0, #62-68, and LEGIONNAIRES #0, #19-24 with an introduction by Mark Waid himself!

Before I begin, I'd like to point out that, at first, I was hesitant to purchase this book as I already had "Beginnings of Tomorrow" TPB that also included the same stories... or so I thought. To my surprise, this volume contains about 50% more material!

So, if you're on the fence, then let that be a deciding factor.

All of that aside, if you're a fan of the "Zero Hour" Legion then this is where you'll want to start. The quality of the art and colors is superb and the storyline is very well conceived and written.

I have enjoyed many versions of the Legion of Super-heroes old and current, but I somehow missed the run from the 90's. This book (and also book two) has issues from both LSH series as well as the separate Legionaires companion series. Mark Waid a writer on many of the issues. Totally worth picking up by any fan of LSH.

Collects the early issues of the Zero Hour Legion reboot.

Back in 1994, the Legion franchise was in trouble. Confusing continuity issues made the books impenetrable (or so many believed). There were two Legion books at the time. "Legion of Super-Heroes" was the main book, chronicling the adventures of the older, original Legion. It wasn't your typical comic, the heroes had been allowed to grow up. They no longer used code names or wore colorful costumes. They didn't even use their superpowers very often.

The other book was "Legionnaires", a spin-off about a younger Legion with a more traditional super-hero feel. These kids were clones of the originals..... or they were time-displaced somehow ..... or they *were* the originals woken from suspended animation and the older team was the clones.... or something. The writers purposefully left it vague. It was an opportunity to update some of the legionnaires' names and costumes. Lightning Lad became Live Wire, Phantom Girl became Apparition, etc.

Sales on both books were poor, and the writers were at a loss on how to resolve all the continuity complications. So, when the Zero Hour crossover rolled around, it was decided to just reboot the entire concept from scratch. That's what this book is. The reboot. LSH #61 and Legionnaires #18 were the final issues featuring the old team and the clone-kids. Next month both books had "zero" issues that retold a whole new (but familiar) origin. The books resumed their numbering the month after, and the two books told one story, kid of like the four Superman books did at the time.

The new Legion closely resembled the clone (or whatever) kids of the Legionnaires book. Most of the new, "hip" code names were kept as were the new costumes. But beyond those superficialities, it was an all new start.

The first year or so (this book covers the first 6-7 months) of the reboot was enjoyable. It was all very competently done. A serviceable origin story. A clever plot point allowed the writers to quickly reintroduce a dozen Legionnaires in only a handful of issues. Several new Legionnaires were created to keep things fresh. The writers were even careful to add some much needed racial diversity to the Legion.

The villains were hit-or-miss. The space spiders seemed lame. And I never warmed to Leland Macauley, a Lex Luthor like evil businessman who would go on to be arguably the reboot Legion's main adversary. But the White Triangle, a xenophobic terrorist group, was a worthy enemy. And there was a truly awesome storyline with the Legion caught in the middle of a jailbreak.

I enjoyed these stories when they were published, and I'm pleasantly surprised how well they hold up 20 plus years later. Not many comics from the 90s stand the test of time.

The presentation of the book itself is flawless. The covers are all reprinted, there's a neat new logo on the cover, and there's even a new intro by Mark Waid.

I took one star off cause, while the stories are solid, they lack depth in some places. The previous, "5 year gap" era Legion took chances. The nine-panel grid, the lack of code names, the multiple pages of text every issue, the slow pacing, the "dense" artwork. It didn't always work, but it was ballsy. The reboot Legion played it too safe. As I said, it was all quite competent, but it took no chances. I'm thrilled this material is being reprinted, but I'm sorry to see the innovative Five Year Gap era be overlooked again.

And, on a side note, I'm very curious about why a new Legionnaires logo was created for this book. I'm cautiously hopeful that a new logo signifies that a new monthly Legion book is in the works.

One of the best ever runs from DC Comics! I am so glad the DC decided to reprint this series in TPB, and I would love for them to keep publishing future volumes (especially the Emerald Eye saga).

I really liked the reboot version of the Legion. I'm hoping all of the reboot Legionnaires and Legion of Super Heroes vol 4 issues get collected.

When the rest of the nineties was soaked in so-called 'gritty' anti-heroes, the Legion of Super-Heroes rediscovered the sense of wonder that comicbooks can offer, with its utopian view of a galaxy one thousand years in the future.

This is the first volume of what the internet may refer to as the 'reboot' era, but while that may conjure an image of intricate backstories to recall, but it is in reality a blank slate for the reader to discover.

Mark Waid lends his usual reliable scripting skills to the issues, and the artwork is all crisp and clean, neither writing nor art dominating. There is not an abundance of splash pages, nor panels crammed with word balloons. Instead, both work in perfect union, for an enjoyable experience that reads very smoothly.
