Regional Rehearsals

Bondi wasn’t really happening in the surf department this morning, so the cheeky tykes and I ventured down the coast to the salubrious village of Maroubra—where the east and north swell get a little magnification and there’s the odd bank or two doing its thing.

About Aquabumps

Since 1999

Eugene Tan (::Uge) started taking photos when he was nine. He’s a self taught tinkerer, a constant experimenter and a relentless documenter who likes to shoot unassisted, mainly at sunrise. If conditions permit you’ll find :: Uge swimming with his camera or dangling out of helicopters, …constantly hunting for new angles on his favourite subjects.

Photography is a way for him to explore his first love, the beach. And since he lives at the beach, that means documenting his home, Bondi. He’s a beach bum. Most of the time he’s either on the beach shooting, digging holes in the sand with his kids or in the line up. And because :: Uge and his family live smack bang in the middle of Bondi, a stone’s throw from his Aquabumps Gallery, you’ll rarely find him further than 300 metres from the shoreline. Close enough to catch those magic Bondi moments when they happen, with his camera, his board or both.

Aquabumps started in 1999 back when the internet was brand new and social media didn’t even have a name. It began as a hobby … a photo a day from the beach emailed to mates. It grew organically. Twenty years later Aquabumps’ photographs are now seen by hundreds of thousands of people, daily.

The best of :: Uge’s work hangs in the Aquabumps Gallery 64 Hall Street Bondi Beach NSW 2026 Telephone 02 9130 7788 Australia. Yes, they can be shipped globally.

Bondi wasn’t playing this morning, so we loaded up the crew and rolled south to Maroubra. East and north swells get a little extra love down there.

Surfing NSW Regionals is this weekend, so every hot dog in the postcode was out at first light — scoping banks, sharpening game plans, doing the thing.

Post overnight rain, sunshine flooded. Salt on skin, warmth on face, one of those mornings that just pulls you outside…

Snapper warm-ups are looking spicy — long, running tubes and a comp that’s shaping up to be an absolute ripper. Love it when it turns on up there…

Snapper is back on the big stage, with the World Surf League Championship Tour rolling into Coolangatta for the Gold Coast Pro, May 1–11. The forecast is looking good.

Have a good day.

There’s a particular quality of light in Bondi in late April. Low enough now that it comes in sideways at dawn — squeezing through the buildings of Ben Buckler. The ocean’s glassy and squeaky clean, but flat. Not a wave worth riding. The nor’easter will fix that this arvo, though only after a comfortable 22 degrees does its thing first.

Meanwhile, Margaret River delivered. George Pittar taking down Medina in the final — a Manly boy, his maiden CT win. Incredible. And Lakey Peterson reminding everyone she’s not done yet, too good for 21-year-old Brazilian Luana Silva and the women’s new guard.

I thought it was going to be a little offshore — or at least very, very light — this morning, but nope. The onshore was in early, blowing 10 knots plus, and really deteriorating the wave quality.

Yes, the swell dropped a lot, which is a good thing, as it wasn’t so rogue… but it was still a junkyard! Everyone who surfed, or walked past me, didn’t have many nice things to say about the conditions. There was even a sea snake in the lineup!

Nonetheless, it was sunny and Friday — the Friday before a long weekend. PS: we’re closed Monday for Anzac Day. The weather looks good for the next three days off though — hooray!

The Margaret River Pro is plagued with onshore conditions too, with 20-foot faces on Tuesday. Twenty foot and onshore! Later in the week, it’ll finally turn offshore.

Plenty of horrible 6-foot closeouts all morning — then one super hollow funnel with a surfer standing tall inside the womb. So it’s either a 2 or a 10 today… very random, with a solid swell jump.

With the onshore breeze, I’ll pass and wait for tomorrow — half the size with clean offshores.

Sun’s out as I type this, and clear weather ahead for a few days — hooray.

Have a great day,

We’ve been seriously spoilt lately—immaculate surf, dreamy weather—so these grim Bondi days feel even heavier. Still, you can sense the change coming… this onshore run should eventually clear out and make way for something decent.

This morning? Pretty ordinary. Six-foot, chunky onshore mush folding into the bay. Throw in cooler temps and a blanket of cloud and you’ve got yourself a proper “head down, get it done” kind of day.

Looks like Margaret River’s copping the same treatment for the comp—onshore woes all round. Strange, really… Autumn usually turns it on. Feels like it’s just taking a breather.
It’s coming.

Rain outside, onshore junk in the surf, and every reason to stay tucked up indoors.

It wasn’t a particularly memorable morning at Bondi. I did the regular lap — pool, south, Ramp 2, then north — and found slim pickings all round.

Hardly anyone was out, swimming or surfing. It’s a lumpy 4–6 feet, with the kind of wobble that sends people back to work, back to bed, or deep into a search for remote islands and mechanical point breaks. Guilty.

Even the Margaret River Pro is chalking up another lay day.

Head down.

The swell has gone rogue and the mercury has plummeted—quite different to recent weeks. I was just getting very comfortable with 24-degree water and summery days on repeat. Holidays over.

Bondi is breaking two to three times overhead. I saw one surfer out in the middle; he caught a single wave and went home. That kind of sums it up.

A 20-degree maximum will have you reaching for a jumper, while that fresh southerly will keep you dreaming of Easter.

Not great conditions for the Margaret River Pro in Western Australia this year. It looks very messy, though chunky. A shame, as I know how good it can get down there—and we’ve dragged the world’s best to the region. Competition on hold.

We’ve got a prototype of our new ‘Bondi Confetti’ board on display in the gallery and it looks smoking hot. I love it. Wanna check it out?

In memory, this has to be one of the best Easters on record — and the good times just keep rolling.

Where do I start? The water’s been impeccable. Warm days, cool nights. Ocean like a bath — I’ve gone days without a scrap of wetsuit rubber.

And waves… every single day we’ve found them.

Not in Sydney though — we’re on the annual pilgrimage, up and down the coastline of this great state, chasing it like so many others.

As per usual, I’m stepping away from the Bondi beat for a bit, hanging with my tykes. They surf better than me now… and aren’t shy about dishing out a few pointers.

Enjoy the weather and these chunky swells.

And remember — when in doubt, don’t go out. It’s proper size in Sydney today, peaking this arvo.

Autumn is a good time for surfing around Sydney. There always seems to be something to ride. Today served up a fun little 2–3 foot shorey on the 8am high tide, with a few short, punchy ones in the mix. When the tide’s that full, it breaks right up on the beach, so there’s not much runway, but no complaints here. The water is sublime — still warm — and it’s a pretty fine way to start a work day.

After lunch, the northeasterly should kick in, and we’re looking at a top of around 22 degrees. The sun is now out after a cloudy start, and it’s shaping up as an absolute cracker for some beach time. Reports this week also point to a warmer, mostly dry lead-in before wetter weekend weather arrives.

Tomorrow, Wednesday 1 April, the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach waiting period kicks off, running through 11 April, with competition only on suitable surf days.

Looks like small, fun waves for the Easter long weekend, although unfortunately Saturday and Sunday are shaping up wet.

We’ve got a new Aquabumps board… phwoar!
Our father-and-son crew at Campbell Designed have just dropped the latest in our art board series. Ocean Confetti — a Bondi water shot — now beautifully inlaid into an exquisite 6’6” mid-length.
She’s a looker. Hang it on the wall or take it for a spin — your call. Comment ‘CONFETTI’ for a link…
