Salsa

A couple of weeks ago my friend Stacie and I tried our had at farm labor work and went out to a field and picked tomatoes. Why? Because we wanted SALSA! After an entire day day of slicing and dicing this is what we ended up with.

Photo Shoot

Byron wanted to take a family picture while everyone was home for the summer; before Jennifer headed back to BYU and Caroline headed off on her adventure to Sacramento State. So of course I thought that matching clothes would be nice and headed out shopping. Not an easy task to come up with all the same color tops. Someone needs to open and family picture clothing store. Matching clothes in a wide rang of sizes and colors. It would make it much easier. My wonderful sister in law played photographer and we arranged and rearranged ourselves in a variety of poses trying to find one that would work. After a few shots Daniel thought we need our cat, McCoy, in the picture so he joined us for a few shots. These are just a small selection of some of them. I'm sure one will be on our Christmas card this year.

Summer Vacation Utah Style

We have never really "vacationed" in Utah. We have gone to General Conference or gone to take our daughter to BYU but never just to vacation. So this year we decided that since our daughter Jennifer wasn't coming home for the summer we would go vacation where she was. Dave and Kayleen Nelson graciously let us stay with them in Sundance.
On our way there our van's battery decided to die so we had to jump start it every time we stopped for gas. Luckily we had our portable jumper thing (what ever it is called) so we didn't have to bother other people to help get us going.
We enjoyed church with the Nelson's on Sunday. I like going to church in Utah to see if they do things the same way we do here in California.

Monday our first priority was a new battery for the van then we headed to distribution so Bishop could get supplies for the ward and just look around. We spent over two hours in there. Luckily we had dropped the kids off at the mall otherwise I really would have gone crazy. That night we took Dave and Kayleen to see The Fantastics at the Sundance out door theater. The play was very well done. We decided to leave the car there and walk home because of the traffic. So we walked 10 minutes down the mountain to the Nelson's property.
Tuesday we got up and drove up to where you can start hiking up to Timpanogos Caves. That has one tiring a hike. It made me wish I had been going to the gym more often. The caves are amazing and definitely worth the hike up there.

On Wednesday we had a hard time getting up and going because we were so tired from the day before. We decided to hike up to Stewart Falls anyways. That was also a long, tiring hike but the secenery was beautiful and the falls were gorgeous.

In the evening we helped set up for Matt Nelson's Eagle court of honor and the kids all played and visited.
On Thursday we were tried from our previous two days of hiking so we decided to go to Cascade Springs and just "walk" around. It is just beautiful! I could have sat there for hours.

That evening was Matt's Eagle Court. They had it planned for it to be out side in a clearing on their property. Of course as people started to arrive it started to rain. And boy did it rain. Kayleen finally said "ok everyone to the cabin". So we all grabbed stuff and headed indoors. It all worked out well.
Friday was moving day for Jennifer. We went to her apartment had helped her pack up and clean. Then took her stuff to her friends house were it would stay until their new place was ready to move into. That evening we met Wendell and Kris Woolsy, Paul Abbott and the Nelsons at Cafe Rio in Provo for dinner. It was great to see Wendell and Kris and get caught up. Wendell gave us all one of his "coinits". I can't explain it very well but it helps you not have to carry around a bunch of change. He invented it and is now trying to market them.
While we were sitting there eating our dinner Elder Jeffery R. Holland comes in and orders food to go. Byron went up and purposely bumped him a little in the shoulder and when Elder Holland turned around to say excuse me Byron said he did it on purpose so he could say he "rubs shoulders with Elder Holland". Elder Holland just laughed and said yes you can.
After enjoying ice cream at Cold Stone the Woolsey's came back to the Nelson's cabin to visit and take a hike on the trail around their property.
Saturday the fun was over and we all piled in the van to head back to Bakersfield. Jennifer's boss gave her some time off so she was able to come home with us and have a vacation here. We are grateful for the Nelson's hospitality and for being able to spend time with them. They are a wonderful family and we miss them very much!

Today is Byron's Birthday! We didn't do a whole lot to celebrate. Just had dinner as a family (which can be tricky to do). I made him lasagna and his favorite kind of cake, German Chocolate. Sister Johnson, our ward's RS President brought him a cheesecake. (Which Daniel ate half of in one sitting.) Which is another favorite. There were so many candles on the cake that Byron was glad he still had on his flame retardant clothes from work and his leather suspenders. The suspenders go with the age group he has now entered. He is now in his 47th year which is almost 50. Which is almost 60. He thinks he can see retirement lurking around the corner in the dark shadows.

Catching Up

We have had some computer problems at our house the last few months so I haven't kept up on the latest goings on so I thought I would post just a few to catch up.

Allison turned 11 and enjoyed a party with a few of her friends.

Later in the week we wanted to take the kids to the beach but the weather was bad so we headed up to California Hot Springs to swim and play in the little bit of snow that was left on the ground. We filled up the van with a boat load of kids and had a great time.

The end of April I headed off to Women's Conference at BYU in Provo Utah with my friends Stacie and Natalie and my daughter Caroline. We stayed in the dorms, helped with the service project Thursday morning by passing out the kits for cute little crocheted flower hair clips for little girls, enjoyed wonderful speakers during the conference, the Friday night concert was a blast, Caroline and I especially loved it when Voice Male preformed (the even sang "Sweet Caroline" to Caroline.....not really but it sounds good, we enjoyed good weather which was a nice change from years past, and enjoyed the rest of the weekend spending time with Jennifer.

The ward we attended on Sunday was comical to say the least. A little boy about 9 years old got up to bare his testimony and told how his parents were yelling and screaming at each other and how he went to his room and prayed and after a little while longererer they finally stopped and he told everyone he was grateful for the Holy Ghost and how he can comfort you. I leaned over and told Caroline that boy is in soooo much trouble. And Caroline said no TV, Game Boy, computer for a month!Kids say the darnedest things!

In May Kate, our YW's president, and I took some of our YW camping at Morrow Bay. We set up camp Friday evening then Kate took them for a night hike on the beach and I drove to the pick up spot. Saturday we got up and went for a hike in the hills. After taking down our tents we spent the rest of the afternoon on the beach playing in the water and sleeping on the sand.

School ended the end of May. The last couple of weeks of school are crazy in 5th grade. Allison had to finish all her state report stuff in time for the May dinner and open house. She did her state report on Washington. Her display for her desk turned out awesome thanks to Caroline and her creativity. Then they had pioneer day which involves making a covered wagon and gathering pioneer clothes for all her friends and spending the day sweating in the sun helping the PTC with the different activities during the day. Allison preformed a tap dance in the school talent show. She danced to Mr. Pinstriped suit. Last year she danced with two of her friends but one of them moved away and the other one didn't want to preform she just wanted to watch. Next was Twin Day! Allison and her friend Michaela wanted to be twins together. Michaela's mom found these cute outfits for them to were for the day. Whats even funnier is that they sit next to each other in class and their teacher had a hard time telling them apart all day. :] Then it was the end of the year party where I helped set up carnival booths for their 5th Grade Carnival of fun. Thus the end of Allison's 5th grade year and the end of my children attending Elementary school. (Weird)

Now we are getting closer to the present.

In June I turned 29 again.(okay 47) My friend Stacy made me an awesome birthday cake: It was carrot cake, my favorite, with cream cheese frosting, yumm! in the shape of a BARBIE DOLL! It took me 47 years to finally get a barbie cake!!!

Later that night while eating the cake the missionaries had dropped in and after their visit when Byron walked them outside he noticed a box on the walkway and looked inside and it was empty but it was apparent that an animal had been inside. And there was food and a water bowl and a towel. But no animal. So the all the kids looked in the bushes for the kitten. Caroline finally found him. He was hiding in the bushes. He is gray and black stripped and really really cute! At first we thought he was a she (silly us) and we were going to called "her" June but then we realized he was a he and we named him Mccoy aka Bones but I call him Puddykat. Although Caroline and I are allergic to him, he is now part of our family and he is quite entertaining to say the least. He loves laundry baskets, socks, and boxes.

Mid June was dance rectal time. More crazyness!! Allison dances for American Dancers Workshop. We had two FULL days of dress rehearsal and three performances. Allison preformed really well in her dances. We're really proud of her and her growth this year.

NOW ON TO JULY!

For the 4th of July we all went over to Ventura as it has become our annual tradition to watch the firework show at the community college there with the Zahners and Jones. We meandered through the Ventura Street Fair looking at all the fun nicknacks and junk. Then we headed over to visit Lindsey at her job at Dairy Queen where we all ordered a yummy treat. In order to head to the campus and stake out a good spot we decided to grab dinner at Subway which is next door to the Dairy Queen. At the Firework show we ate, played, laughed, and got to enjoy some ubber yummy freshly made kettle corn (which is a favorite of the family). The program is always a blast and exciting to watch but most of all it is always fun to hang out and catch up with our extended family.

Finally!!! Last week Amber, Byron and I spent the week up at Big Meadow for our stake's YW's camp. It was a hot week up in the mountains which means the nights didn't get really cold (yea!). We really enjoy the beauty of Big Meadow. Amber was part of the Youth Leader Presidency and even got to be a YL on the 1st year hike. Byron is the the stay in camp priesthood leader and handy man. And I work in the kitchen with my friends; Stacie, Annette, Cathy, Joni, Terry and Carla. We have tons of fun hanging out and cooking for the YL and stake leaders.
