Review
— ANNE E. CUNNINGHAM, Professor, Learning Sciences and Human Development, University of California, Berkeley; author of Book Smart: How toDevelop and Support Successful, Motivated Readers
“This book speaks to something near and dear to my heart—the power of early literacy to lead to lifelong learning and immeasurable opportunities. With clarity and precision, Dr. Lindsey cuts through the distracting noise around reading instruction. Her book should be required reading in preservice and inservice programs. With it, we can chart a course forward to literacy for all.”
— SHARIF EL-MEKKI, Chief Executive Officer, Center for Black Educator Development
“One of the best books I’ve read on decoding and phonics. With passion for teaching, Dr. Lindsey interprets reading science in ways that are directly transferable to the classroom. Her book is chock full of techniques, activities, and strategies—a veritable ‘go-to’ resource. This is exactly the kind of translational work the field needs!”
— HEIDI ANNE MESMER, Professor of Literacy Education, Virginia Tech; author of Letter Lessons andFirst Words: Phonics Foundations That Work
“In Reading Above the Fray, Julia masterfully connects the deep research base on how kids learn to read to what teachers can do tomorrow in their classrooms. What I love even more about the book is her focus on the joy of helping students develop the tools they need to achieve reading success.”
— SUSANNE NOBLES, Chief Academic Officer, ReadWorks
“Accessible, timely, and easy to use, this is a book that needed to be written for teachers, literacy coaches, and school administrators looking to develop efficient and effective literacy instruction. Dr. Lindsey simplifies the complexities of foundational skills instruction, synthesizes research by bridging it to practice, and provides routines that can be implemented the very next day. I predict it will become a primary resource that educators return to time and again.”
— REBECCA MILES, Early Literacy Consultant and Coach Coordinator, Berrien Regional Educational Service Agency
“If you think a professional book about decoding and foundational skills can’t be engaging, think again! Dr. Lindsey artfully combines wit, wisdom, and classroom realism with evidence-based routines that we can implement immediately. Most important, she centers each chapter on children, calling us to value and build upon the strengths, perspectives, and cultural assets they bring. This book is a win for educators and, by extension, the children and families they serve!”
— ANNIE PETROZZELLI SPEAR, Literacy Specialist, Consultant, and Author
“Elementary teachers have been waiting for this one! Dr. Lindsey explains not only the ‘why’ behind the essential elements of decoding, but also provides explicit guidance and routines to help any teacher swap out ineffective practices for more effective and efficient research-based ones. She makes it easy to align instruction to reading science
and teach ‘above the fray.’”
— KATHARINE NOONAN, English Language Arts Instructional Coach, District of Columbia Public Schools

I am a Literacy Coach and teacher of 28 years and you will get your money’s worth reading Reading Above the Fray.
This book does a fabulous job breaking down the theory and many of the practical applications that are critical to ensuring that readers are taught and understand all of the components of reading. And, I love that it doesn’t waste time on the useless “Reading Wars” discussion, but focuses on things we can do to help children become strategic readers quickly and comprehensively.
The chapters are well organized and the information is shared in simple and easy to follow format. You will be able to use what you are learning as you read.
That being said, there are areas that you might want to learn more about once you finish Reading Above the Fray. Speech to print is the equivalent of a self-taught LETRS training for those who are very self-motivated. The Comprehension Blueprint, The Writing Rope, and The Writing Revolution are great add-one to Reading Above the Fray, as well as Shifting the Balance and Structured Literacy.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 23, 2022Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseIt's rare to find a professional book that can offer easy access points to those new to teaching early literacy as well as nuanced, research-based insights to those who have experience with decoding instruction. This treasure of a text hits all the marks. It is written in clear terms, organized in digestible sections, and enhanced by helpful tables and graphics.
Dr. Lindsey's ability to distill scads of studies into economical, practitioner-friendly prose is remarkable, and her upbeat tone makes each chapter a delight to read. Most importantly, the book answers an incredible range of questions that are in the minds of every teacher and teacher-educator such as: How quickly can kindergartners learn the alphabet? How much time should be devoted to foundational skills every day? How can I use decodable texts in my small group reading instruction? You will find practical explanations and examples to answer these queries and many more.
This is exactly what the world of early literacy needs, and it's arrived at exactly the right moment!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2024Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseLooking into reading problems for a paper I am writing and this was recommended. Good book but dry. Aimed at teachers but they have enough bland to read I would have tried to streamline it.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 29, 2022Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI'm finishing up my first year of teaching second grade--and wish i had this book at the start of the year because it is so useful. It contains just the right balance of smart strategies and research-based rationales for using them. The author clearly describes why foundational skills (such as phonemic awareness and sound-spelling knowledge) are so important in developing decoding skills. But she doesn't stop there. She makes it very clear that children gain those skills for a reason--to become passionate, proficient readers who view reading as a meaning making process. Love this book!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 26, 2022Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseExcited to dig into this book because it's so thoughtful and practical! Julia Lindsey presents the research on foundational skills so that teachers can base their instruction on the latest in research. What I truly love about this book is the tone is about informing teachers about understanding early literacy, so that they can make professional decisions. I'll definitely be using it with my pre-service teachers.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2025Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseGreat condition. Hate the textbook. Not because of the info but just because I actually have to use it for class and not just enjoy it personally.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 22, 2023Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseIf you are new to the literacy world, this is a good book start your learning. It is written in a very common sense approach and has practical ideas. If you already have a basic understanding of the science of reading and best practices for teaching students how to read it will likely be repetitive information for you.
