The word “vaccine” derives from the Latin word for cow. The English physician, Edward Jenner, coined it in his 1798 pamphlet An Inquiry into the Causes and Effects of the Variolae Vaccinae. The last two Latin words mean “Smallpox of the Cow,” or cowpox. Jenner postulated that cowpox causes mild disease in humans while protecting them from the more dangerous smallpox. His proposal for inoculation with a weak form of disease-causing matter to prevent serious illness became the central concept of infectious disease medicine and has remained so ever since. The word “vaccine” was subsequently applied to immunizations against all infectious diseases. Its etymology is amazingly apt, because vaccines are the ultimate sacred cow.

Vaccines: Mythology, Ideology, and Reality tells the story of this technology and the celebrated men who developed it with some success, but also with failures that are never mentioned in the celebratory literature on vaccines. Vaccine advocates often proclaim that they “follow the science,” but most vaccine development has been a matter of guesses, gambles, and wild experimentation. Its key figures have been biased by religious faith, wishful thinking, ideology, and a desire for recognition and money.

Though credit is due to some vaccines for reducing infectious disease morbidity and mortality, their contribution to public health in developed nations has been grossly exaggerated by propagandists. Dramatic improvements in nutrition and sanitation were the primary drivers of this trend. The authors do not dismiss the concept of vaccination but seek to promote a more informed and less dogmatic discussion about its risks and benefits. Critical evaluation can only make the technology safer and more effective.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Dr. Peter McCullough and John Leake have done the near-impossible: cutting through the noise and contemporary dramas around the issues of vaccines, they have produced a page-turning history and a gripping analysis of vaccines as myth and social ideology. This astute combination of intellectual and medical history, cultural analysis, and hard-hitting medical and scientific exposition could not have been accomplished by any other team. Vaccines will change the way you think about medical history, and how the collective mind, shaped by powerful interests, may propagate illusions out of thin air. This is an essential book for navigating our frenzied times with knowledge and insight, and it is one that will outlast us—a beautifully written classic of medical history and the history of ideas.”

Dr. Naomi Wolf

“The appeal of vaccines that can prevent disease and death is obvious. Unfortunately, blind faith in vaccines has replaced critical thinking and robust cost-benefit analysis. Dr. Peter McCullough and John Leake provide both as they recount the history of vaccination in their must-read book.”

Senator Ron Johnson

“A sweeping historical investigation that presents objective and competent guidance to the promise, folly, and dangers of vaccines—an industry that clearly needs a reset in light of evidence.”

Jeffrey Tucker, Brownstone Institute

“John Leake and Peter McCullough, MD, separate fact from fiction in their telling of the 120-year history of the modern vaccine era. The most recent myth they expose is that new technologies can change the rules of biology—a false proposition that culminated with untested mRNA ‘vaccines,’ whose champions aspired to inject everyone with their new product.
Vaccines challenges this con that threatens the health of humanity.”

—Robert Clancy, emeritus professor of immunology, University of Newcastle

Everything you always wanted to know about vaccines...but were not afraid to ask!

This is an outstanding book, well-written, carefully documented, and co-authored by John Leake, an acclaimed investigative writer, and Dr. Peter A. McCullough, a respected professor of medicine and cardiology. It raises thoughtful questions and presents evidence for readers to consider. As a M.D., I found it genuinely informative.

They argue that vaccines have become the ultimate “sacred cow,” akin to a religion, largely shielded from honest criticism by faith, ideology, prestige, and money. They only began questioning the entire enterprise after witnessing the “stupendous chicanery” of the COVID-19 mRNA vaccine rollout in 2020. They are not “anti-vaxxers,” a term used by “vaccine propagandists” against anyone who dares ask questions.

One of the central arguments challenges the widely held belief that vaccines alone drove the dramatic decline in infectious disease mortality during the 20th century. Using vital statistics and historical data, the authors show that death rates from most diseases had already plummeted before their respective vaccines arrived. It’s easy for us to forget the harsh realities of 19th-century life for the poor which created perfect conditions for infectious diseases to spread. Improvements in nutrition, sanitation, clean water, sewage systems, housing, pasteurization, refrigeration, and antibiotics are confounding factors that cannot be ignored.

Several chapters are dedicated to smallpox due to the disease being foundational to the history of vaccination. In chapter 6, the authors question what really accounted for the sharp decline in smallpox mortality. Was it vaccination alone, or did major improvements in sanitation, and overall living conditions play the decisive role?

Chapter 18 exposes the ruthless, coordinated destruction of Dr. Andrew Wakefield, a respected British gastroenterologist whose modest 1998 Lancet paper that suggested a possible link between the MMR vaccine, intestinal damage, and autism in a small group of children unleashed the rage of the vaccine cartel that led to retraction of his paper, loss of his medical license, damage to his reputation, and set an example for any doctor who dares question vaccine safety.

Chapters 19 and 20 deliver an exposé on the autism-vaccine cover-up. Chapter 19 reveals how the Vaccine Court secretly conceded that vaccines triggered Hannah Poling’s autistic regression (daughter of Dr. Poling, MD), then silenced its own expert witness Dr. Andrew Zimmerman and manipulated evidence to protect the official lie that “vaccines don’t cause autism.” Chapter 20 documents autism’s catastrophic surge (from 1 in 10,000 to nearly 1 in 30) and the establishment’s refusal to investigate vaccines despite overwhelming evidence of regression after shots and far lower rates of autism in unvaccinated kids.

I found chapters 21 and 22 truly terrifying. U.S. biodefense labs deliberately engineer deadly new pathogens (anthrax at Fort Detrick and gain-of-function coronaviruses at Wuhan) and then exploit the resulting outbreaks, whip up public panic, and reward themselves and vaccine makers with billions in funding (plus total legal immunity for vaccine makers through the BioShield and PREP Acts). This is the greatest biological threat to the human species as a whole.

Chapter 24 is Dr. McCullough recount of his personal shift from vaccine acceptance to critic, appalled by Operation Warp Speed’s recklessness: massive Pfizer orders placed before trials ended, ignored whistleblower reports, dismissal of natural immunity, and the aggressive push to vaccinate low-risk groups (pregnant women, healthy children, and athletes) despite obvious safety concerns.

In the final chapter, the authors recommend repealing the 1986 liability shield that protects manufacturers, ending the FDA–pharma revolving door, requiring genuine informed consent, and replacing the one-size-fits-all childhood schedule with individualized approaches (including genetic screening and separate shots).

The book closes with two urgent demands: immediately pull all COVID-19 mRNA vaccines from the market due to safety concerns, and launch a full, transparent investigation into the causes of the autism epidemic. I highly recommend it to every truth-seeker.

A straightforward, well-written book that cuts through the noise and tells the truth about vaccines and public health. Forget what you’ve heard from the talking heads -- this book lays out the facts in a way that’s easy to understand but hard to ignore.

John Leake and Dr. McCullough team up to give us the real deal on vaccines, from the early days of smallpox to today’s high-pressure vaccine campaigns / mandates. They don’t hold back -- they share the good, the bad, and the ugly -- it’s eye-opening.

What really stands out in this book is how it exposes the deep ties between Big Pharma, the media, doctors, and universities. It’s no secret that pharmaceutical companies fund a lot of what we see on TV, hear from doctors, and learn in schools. That’s a problem when it comes to getting honest information about vaccines. The authors show how money and influence can twist the science.

They take a close look at vaccine safety and why some policies just don’t make sense. If you’ve ever felt like something wasn’t quite right with the whole vaccine story, this book will make you feel like you’re not alone.

For those that like to “do your own research” and are not yet ready to completely “leave the science to the scientists,” this book is worth your time. It’s a wake-up call. You’ll never look at vaccines the same way again.

We have all been fed lies for most of our lifetimes. I bought the stories until I becamse quite ill in my early 50's. I vaccinated my children thinking I was protecting them. All of us, as it turns out, are indeed vaccine damaged. Unfortunately, the world had to go through Covid for many people to wake up - at least among those who survived. I am grateful to a loving Heavenly Father who put me through illness to wake me up before the Covid jab came around. By the time the Covid hit I had been awake for a good many years. I want to thank Jeff Bezos for allowing a well researched book of historical facts to be sold on Amazon. I followed Dr. McCullough's bravery all through Covid and even saw him waking up during that time as he realized that the problem was not just the Covid jab, the problem was every vaccine which had never been tested against a saline placebo but was routinely injected into babies and children. The 1986 Act which removed all liability from pharma did not work as it was intended because the FDA never monitored what the drug companies were doing which was found out in FOIA request through ICAN. For interested readers, in addition to this fantastic book of history, facts and truths, I also recomment Turtles All the Way Down. So grateful that RFK Jr., Dr. McCullough, Pierre Kory, Simone Gold and many other brave medical practitioners can now speak freely! I have bought 2 of this book so I can share it with others. I have in the past purchased truthful books such as Naomi Wolf's on the Pfizer Papers and Pierre Kory's book, The War on Ivermectin, to give to my doctors. Be aware that there are paid trolls here on Amazon and on social media working to cast a large, dark shadow of doubt over this book. Don't be led astray. Your life and the lives of those you love may well depend upon you coming to a knowledge of the truth.

    Fascinating history of vaccine “science”

In this book you will learn the history of vaccinology and how we as a culture came to believe in it in the first place. The authors describe what really happened and you can draw your own conclusions whether it was science or superstitious hope.

They describe how the early proponents of vaccination such as Edward Jenner were literally jabbing in the dark, not knowing the causative agent of smallpox, but injecting pus from cow lesions into two little boys and proclaiming his experiments successful even though one of them died.

They describe Louis Pasteur’s Quest for Vaccine Glory (Chapter 7), and how he gave prestige to the idea of vaccination though he deceptively hid his experimental methods and to this day, his experiments cannot be reproduced.

They reiterate that the risk factors for infectious diseases are poor living conditions—i.e. poor diet, hygiene, sanitation, etc. The engineers and other public authorities cleaned up the slums in the cities and made many infectious diseases all but disappear, but the vaccine religion was already alive so the profiteers took credit.

You will find out many other revealing facts from these authors who are among the most brilliant science-based commentators in the world. John Leake is a phenomenal historical researcher and Dr. McCullough wants to set the record straight. One of the chapters is how during covid he came to his current opinion of vaccination-- it has rested far too long on unquestioned assumptions and the whole practice needs to be completely reevaluated and revised in order to stop the harm it is causing.

As an RN, I have seen the good and bad in modern medicine. Yes, there are many successes, and even miracles, if you will. However, established practices can easily become dogmas, and practitioners resistant to change. Hmmm, doctors used to believe in bloodletting, lobotomies and smoking too. Bless Dr. McCullough and John Leake for urging the reevaluation of vaccination, especially now that a newborn is supposed to get 27 shots by the time they are 2 years old!

Just finished this book and it is excellent. We'll researched and written so a lay person can understand it. This is a good review of the history of vaccines. The authors detail the horrors of the mRNA vaccines, how the government, Bigpharma, and the media lied about the safety and efficacy of these vaccines. These vaccines never underwent the trials required for drug safety and Bigpharma lied about the trial results. As Dr. McCullough so eloquently states, "The COVID vaccines were the greatest experiment ever conducted on humanity and the greatest bio-pharmaceutical disaster in history." This book is a must read.

I noticed that none of the one star ratings were verified purchases. That's a sad sign of the times that some individuals are so closed minded because of ideology, they refuse to answer any questions. That being said... I'm an engineer, and I love facts, statistics and data, and this book of full of all that! All references are provided in the back of the book, so anyone can verify the information themselves. I wish this information had been known when my kids were growing up. I had the "mother's intuition" to delay vaccination for as long as I could, much to the reprimand from my pediatrician, but I did not have the information to back up my intuition. I hope all young mothers read this book. Another great one that focuses specifically on Polio is 'The Moth in the Iron Lung". Absolutely fascinating history.

CONVID (spelling intended) was my great awakening. I questioned everything about it and in the process, lost respect for the institution of medicine (my profession) and so many colleagues I once thought were truly brilliant. My trust in the CDC and FDA completely vanished as I witnessed their industry capture and corruption during the pandemic. From my own research, I had warned friends and family not only about the dangers of the Pfizer-BioNtech and Moderna mRNA vaccines, but also about the excessive and egregious childhood vaccine schedule. With the 1986 Nat'l Childhood Vaccine Injury Act --which sounds benign-- vaccine manufacturers were granted immunity (pun intended) from all liability for injury or death once the CDC puts a vaccine on the childhood vaccine schedule! Hence the explosion in the number of shots on the schedule and the related explosion of neurocognitive and immune dysregulatory disorders in children. John Leake and Peter McCullough do a masterful job of pulling together all the threads of vaccine history (mythology), dogma (ideology), and facts (reality). This book provides so much information (sourced and cited) in such an easily readable fashion that I may buy several more copies as Christmas presents for my indoctrinated, propagandized colleagues and friends who desperately need enlightenment.

Every American should read this book, but especially young couples who want to have families. This is a balanced historical look at vaccines and the irrational exuberance of the medical establishment and Big Pharma who push them without question. Many have been harmed, but they refuse to acknowledge even the possibility of a connection. Vaccines are a tradeoff, with downside risks, an increasing number of people are not willing to to make. This book will help them understand why. The authors are not "anti-Vax," and try to be dispassionately accurate in their analysis.

I have been through the book and read 10 chapters so far, selected for content that I am familiar with...by way of a cross check. A very straightforward and factual statement of events that align exactly with what I witnessed myself over the last 5 years, with the added advantage of filling in several blank spots in my knowledge. It also aligns with RFK's book on Fauci and Gates as well as Turtles all the way down.

Well written and brimful of information from a wide array of sources.

Gradually the scales are falling from the eyes

They've been conning us about vaccines ever since smallpox. Great book which outlines the vaccine journeys ever since their conception....it will have you thinking twice about all of them!

Very good read, learned a lot about the history of vaccination I was never taught and modern medicine completely ignores.

A well-researched book that is easy to read by a layman. Nothing scandalous about it (unless one gets scandalised by the lies of the medical professionals) and all it does is to shine a light on this important issue. By the way, to all those people who dismiss vaccine injured as liars, cranks, etc, try seeing your perfectly healthy child regress into a non-verbal screaming mess within 48 hours of receiving his vaccinations and then be constantly told that it’s all a figment of your imagination.
