2020 Goals: Week 4 of 52

Progress on my goals for Week 4 (Jan 20 through Jan 26)

Image

1.  Scan Old Photos and Slides
Digitize family photos and slides:
 - Slides from Farm
 - Photo Albums from Farm
 - Nana's photos
 - College and Early Marriage Years photos

No progress this week on this goal

Image

2.  Daily Gospel Study
In addition to daily 10 minutes reading in the Book of Mormon, spend 20 minutes per day studying:
 - Come Follow Me 2020 Book of Mormon
 - Inklings (Pres Nelson's challenge/invitation from Oct 2019 Conference)
 - General Conference Talks

Crazy schedules and early morning events have limited my scripture study this week.  I did one morning of Inklings on top of reading in the Book of Mormon 10 minutes each day (for 5 of the 7 days).  On Monday, I made it a priority to read all of the CFM scripture assignments which helped.

3.  Purge and Organize
Purge excess items from our home and organize what remains.

No purging this week.

4.  Train Brady
Work with Brady on specific behavior goals...
 - Clippers
 - Walking etiquette/behavior

Nada here too.  Now I'm wondering what I did this week.

5.  Virtual Walk to Salt Lake City
As a family, we have now walked 180+ miles so we've made it just past the Kansas City Missouri Temple.  It would be much higher but Kaylyn didn't wear her Garmin, many days I didn't carry my phone around with me, and Morgan leaves her phone in her locker at school.

6.  Build The Treasured Legacy
Completed one hat to add to a "store" and posted on Instagram..

7.  Read 6 non-fiction books

8.  Be more Social - Host regular Game Nights
We had our 3rd weekly game night on Friday AND also learned how to play Catan with friends on Saturday.  This coming week we'll be hosting again.
On top of game night, we hosted a family birthday party on Saturday morning.

9.  Attend the Temple at least 12 times in 2020.
1 - Jan 15th
2 -
Second trip is scheduled for Feb 1st.

10.  Clean out Recipes to Try 2020 Pinterest Board
Start of 2020 = 390 recipes.
Today = 375 recipes

11.  Create 12 Photo Books
No progress despite receiving free photo book offers from Shutterfly :(

12.  Be vigilent/Daily Tasks
This is where I'm spending much of my time, and primarily with keeping up on the house.  This made hosting K's birthday party much easier and allowed me to spend my time making the crepes she wanted instead of frantically cleaning.

2020 Goals: Week 3 of 52

Progress on my 2020 goals.
This is Week 3, and there was not a week 2 update.

Image

1.  Scan Old Photos and Slides
Digitize family photos and slides:
 - Slides from Farm
 - Photo Albums from Farm
 - Nana's photos
 - College and Early Marriage Years photos

No progress this week on this goal

Lots of Come Follow Me study and organization.  I am on target with CFM.  I have decided that on Mondays I have to read all the assigned scriptures.  Then throughout the week I can listen to the podcasts and related General Conference talks.
I did 1 or 2 weeks of Inklings since my last Goals update but several weeks behind schedule.  I studied 1 or 2 General Conference Talks.  Really need to do 2 per week to study them all before April conference.

Image

3.  Purge and Organize
Purge excess items from our home and organize what remains.

We went through the armoire, including the 72 hr kits which held a lot of lovely expired surprises and little girl clothes that won't even come close to fitting teenage daughters anymore.
We also went through several nightstand drawers but not the filing folder drawers, and Adam's Under-bed drawer.
We have identified a ton of stuff to get rid of but have not done the needed shredding or delivered the donate pile.
But PROGRESS continues!

Image

4.  Train Brady
Work with Brady on specific behavior goals...
 - Clippers
 - Walking etiquette/behavior

I need to be a lot more consistent with this.  Brady and I tried to take a walk on any day that was 50 degrees or more, which was more than you would expect in January.  The struggle is if I walk him everyday, he gets better each day.  But then we miss a day, or more, and he loses most of the progress.  I only worked with him on the clippers once or twice, and that needs to be a daily activity.

Image

5.  Virtual Walk to Salt Lake City
We're approaching the Peculiar exit on I-49.  I expect that this week we'll have made it to the Kansas City Temple.

Image

6.  Build The Treasured Legacy
Making connections with the Instagram knitting community and working on multiple projects.  Hoping to have several hats ready for sale by the end of January.

7.  Read 6 non-fiction books

8.  Be more Social - Host regular Game Nights
We hosted a game night on the 10th with 2 other couples.  Then on the 17th, one of those couples hosted and a new couple joined us.  The other couple from our first night is hosting on the 24th.  This has been fun!  I am especially excited to discover that several others in our group turn into pumpkins about 9/9:30 pm so while we're having fun, we're not staying out to midnight and paying for it the next day.

9.  Temple
Attend the Temple at least 12 times in 2020.

First temple trip of 2020 is in the books!  My friend D and I went on Wednesday morning.  It was fabulous!  And the time went so quick, we actually left the temple just before Noon so we had a leisurely lunch and then checked out Trader Joe's for the first time.  So many have raved about Trader Joe's that I was sure we'd love it.  It was fine but not particularly exciting so I don't think it'll become a monthly tradition.

Image

10.  Clean out Recipes to Try 2020 Pinterest Board
Start of 2020 = 390 recipes.
Today = 377 recipes
We tried several new recipes over the past 2 weeks.  Most were edible but disappointing.  One half-winner is this Bibimbap recipe.  We LOVED the veggies but the meat was not as good as this Korean beef recipe so we'll use one for the meat and one for the veggies.
As I looked for recipes to try, I deleted a few that have ingredients I'll never actually buy.  Down 10 recipes since Week 1's update!!

11.  Create 12 Photo Books
Didn't work on this at all - but did you catch the progress on the recipes?

12.  Be vigilent/Daily Tasks
I downloaded and printed a habit tracker.  Now to fill it out and USE it

2020 Goals - Week 1 of 52

Progress on my goals

Image

1.  Scan Old Photos and Slides
Digitize family photos and slides:

 - Photo Albums from Farm
 - Nana's photos
 - College and Early Marriage Years photos

No progress this week on this goal

We got our copy of the Come Follow Me book for this year.  I did a little studying of it in preparation for yesterday's Sunday School lesson.  And I did spend one morning studying a General Conference talk.  So for just a few days in the new year and at least 2 days successful with this goal.  This goal really starts this week as the family goes back to school/work.

Image

3.  Purge and Organize
Purge excess items from our home and organize what remains.

We completely emptied our master closet.  We have now gone through everything and put back what we're keeping.  We've taken 3 large bags of clothes to the DAV.  In addition, we've given away a Christmas tree and a few books to friends.
PROGRESS!!

Image

4.  Train Brady
Work with Brady on specific behavior goals...
 - Clippers
 - Walking etiquette/behavior

We took Brady to the vet on Thursday.  That was not a fun adventure.  Even though he was mildly sedated, he has a great fear of someone working on his feet.  We ended up having to completely sedate him and had his claws trimmed as far back as they can go.  Now to get focused on having him not panic at the sight of clippers so there is no repeat.

Image

5.  Virtual Walk to Salt Lake City
As a family, we walked 24 miles so we're almost to Bolivar (it is 34.6 miles to the Bolivar exit on Hwy 13).  We would have been further but Morgan has been sick and not doing anything since the 1st.

6.  Build The Treasured Legacy
Instagram page is now active with posts!  Check it out!

8.  Be more Social - Host regular Game Nights
We reached out to several friends and scheduled our first game night for Friday the 3rd.  But at the last minute, everyone canceled (with legitimate reasons).  Trying again for this weekend.  We DID go to a friend's house to play games on Thursday so we WERE social, just not the way we planned.

9.  Temple
Attend the Temple at least 12 times in 2020.

I'm currently scheduled for my monthly Temple trip on Wed Jan 16th.  And we're working to schedule a second trip which is my daughter's 17th birthday party (this is her tradition).

Image

10.  Clean out Recipes to Try 2020 Pinterest Board
Start of 2020 = 390 recipes.
Today = 387 recipes
I did a quick go through of the recipes on the board and deleted those I know we're not going to try or had already tried and didn't care for.  I also moved those we've tried in the past and liked.  Well, looking at the numbers, I didn't get rid of as many as it felt like.

11.  Create 12 Photo Books
I moved all photos taken prior to Jan 1 2020 from my phone to my laptop.

12.  Be vigilent/Daily Tasks
This is going to be hard to report on each week.  There are 0 dishes in the sink, but there are a few items on the counter that K didn't wash (water bottles and odd items).  Laundry is behind schedule already.  Having everyone home is making my normal housekeeping routines difficult to focus on.  Looking forward to getting back to my normal schedule.

2020 Goals

As we begin 2020, I was pondering ways to track my goals for this year, to be accountable and share/document my progress.  A blog post seemed the best fit but why make a new blog when I hae this one.  So I dug deep for the login and password as it's been over 6 years since I last posted here.  Yikes!  So here we go....

Image

1.  Scan Old Photos and Slides
Digitize family photos and slides:
 - Slides from Farm
 - Photo Albums from Farm
 - Nana's photos
 - College and Early Marriage Years photos

For a combo Christmas/Birthday present, my mom and stepdad gave me an Epson V600.  I asked for it because of the slides option.  My goal is to scan all the slides that are in storage at the farm where I grew up.   I also need to find a way to scan all the old photo albums that are also at the farm.  This is in addition to all the photos that I have from college and the early years of our marriage, plus Nana's photos.

Image

I need to create a schedule for what days to do which study so that one doesn't get left behind.  They are all important to me and I'm learning a ton as I do it.  Inklings began right after General Conference in October
Image

3.  Purge and Organize
Purge excess items from our home and organize what remains.
 - Master Closet
 - Master Bedroom
 - Master Bath
 - Linen Closet
 - Hall Bath
 - Living Room bookshelves
 - CDs and DVDs
 - Coat Closet
 - Food Rotation System
 - Pantry
 - Kitchen Cupboards
 - Garage

This seems to be a constant goal but I'm going to be more intentional and focused.  We started it this week on Monday by removing EVERY SINGLE THING from our closet (well 2 exceptions - my quilting rulers and cutting mats that hang on the wall and the gun safe).  I scrubbed the floor and the shelves and we are slowly going through the stacks and purging.  The donate pile is HUGE.  The clothes we're keeping are back in the closet with a few exceptions that still need to be looked at.

Image

4.  Train Brady
Work with Brady on specific behavior goals...
 - Clippers
 - Walking etiquette/behavior

Image

5.  Virtual Walk to Salt Lake City
As a family, walk 1250 miles before our summer trip to Utah.

As a way to help us become healthier and also countdown to summer vacation, we are going to walk 1250 miles as a family.  We will add up our individual steps each day and plot where we are on a map).  I created maps to track our progress using AAA's TripTik.  My first attempt at printing the maps did not work well (no color ink) so reprinting today.  I chose to use a TripTik as it plotted the highway mile markers to make it easy for us to know where we are on our virtual journey.

Image

6.  Build The Treasured Legacy
Open an Etsy shop and use up yarn stash.

After several sales of knitted/crocheted items and having several friends of friends admire stockings I had made and asking if I had an etsy shop, I'm taking the plunge.  We pondered and brainstormed and tested out a variety of shop names.  One criteria was to not have the name be yarn specific so that as Adam increases his time in woodworking, we could add some of his items to the shop as well.  We chose The Treasured Legacy as our shop name as the skills we're using are part of our treasured legacy.  The items I'll make for the shop will hopefully become part of another family's treasures.
On the associated Instagram and Facebook pages, I'll share about the legacy we've received as well as the legacy we're striving to build.
We've reserved the name on etsy, Instagram, Facebook, and gmail.  I'm trying to build up a small supply of finished items before we officially "open" the etsy shop but immediate goal is to start publishing on Instagram and Facebook asap.

7.  Read 6 non-fiction books
 - One by One by David A Bednar
 - ?
 - ?
 - ?
 - ?
 - ?

I LOVE to read, and have to read before I go to sleep each night.  But that's fiction.  I normally will read 2-3 fiction books per week (or more).   But I have to push myself to read non-fiction.  I've purchased a ton of non-fiction books fully intending to read, and haven't.  The first book I'm going to focus on is One by One by David A Bednar.  I borrowed it from a friend over a year ago and immediately started it, but then set it aside for more immediate matters.
This goal will also help with the purging.  If I read a book and don't like it, it can go away.

8.  Be more Social - Host regular Game Nights
Schedule regular game nights with other "Almost Empty"-Nesters.

As our girls have gotten older, our calendar has filled with their activities and nights without their activities have become rest nights.  That means OUR social activities have greatly diminished.  This is our attempt to build/re-build friendships as we prepare to become empty-nesters.  Morgan is halfway through the 7th grade so in 5 years we'll be looking at her high school graduation and moving on to college.  With her personality, I know those 5 years are going to be filled with her at this activity, hanging out with this friend and then that one, and simply time without us.

9.  Temple
Attend the Temple at least 12 times in 2020.

As I have a monthly temple trip scheduled with a good friend, this goal should be reasonable to accomplish.  Adam has set his goal to go every other month, or 6-7 times in 2020.  Add to this, the girls like to attend frequently as well.  We did end 2019 in the Nauvoo Temple as we attended with Adam's sister as she went to the Temple for the first time.

Image

10.  Clean out Recipes to Try 2020 Pinterest Board
Try out the 390 recipes pinned.  Delete those we won't actually try.

I doubt we'll try 390 new recipes in 2020 if I want my family to willingly come to dinner.  But that's a LOT of recipes I've pinned and done nothing with.  Anything new I find that we want to try will be pinned to a separate Recipes to Try Board on Pinterest so that 390 recipes won't increase.

11.  Create 12 Photo Books
Catch up on creating photo books.

We have made several photo books over the years but I've not been consistent.  By setting a goal of 12 photo books, I intend to prepare one each month.  That does not mean I'll order it that month - I'll prep the books and be watching for deals, and setting money aside in our budget.  First ones to focus on will be 2019 in general and our 2019 vacation.

12.  Be vigilent
Be vigilent about daily tasks/to dos

I've made a list of things I need to remember and be vigilent about each day.  This includes not just washing the laundry but folding it and putting it away.  It also includes being vigilent about dishes being done each day, not letting it get put off to tomorrow.  Flossing.  Drink water (goal is to build up to 1 gallon per day).  Just naming a few.

Trials and Blessings

I'm highly tempted to ignore any of my responsibilities (outside necessities for my family - but as I type the girls are fighting so maybe I'll include them in the ignoring) and take the evening off!

Here's my afternoon:
 - Took Kitty to the vet for a booster shot.
 - Went to Sam's and bought a new mattress set for Kaylyn.  But it didn't fit in my van.
 - Quickly drove to pick up Morgan at school and got pretty wet carrying the box of book fair flyers through the rain so I could put them into teacher mailboxes
 - Made a fast dash over to Walgreen's to pick up prescriptions
 - Van acted funny while sitting in carline to pick up Kaylyn (radio turned itself off and on, and off again so then I turned it off) but we made it home for the 10 minutes we had before gymnastics so Morgan could change clothes.
 - Tried to leave for gymnastics and van won't start.  Okay, let's figure out something for dinner and prep bedrooms for the big bed switch-around
 - Decided to pull out the bed frame in the garage to make sure it will fit a queen mattress set and discovered standing water.  Wouldn't be so much of a problem if the garage wasn't filled with boxes!
 - Looking at the bed frame, I don't think it will fit the queen mattress set
 - Came inside and my girls are fighting over a polly pockets sized "hairbrush"; they are both now in their rooms mad at each other AND mad at me.

I would say Calgon take me away, but instead I'm going to say Andy's Frozen Custard take me away!  And it may come true since Adam and I get to meet our very giving friend with a pickup truck who has agreed to pick up our mattress set on his way home from work.

Now to continue focusing on the blessings in the midst of trials

 - friends who are willing to help
 - van is in my driveway and NOT somewhere in the middle of the errands I ran this afternoon
 - the girls have toys to fight over (at least today, that may change tomorrow)
 - I can smell freshly baking homemade bread in the bread machine to eat with chicken noodle soup for dinner
 - Kaylyn knocked on her sister's door to say she missed her and could they play (they sure do love each other)
 - I can always get my girls to smile for me, even when they are SUPER MAD at mom.
 - the Van started for Adam when he got home

Kaylyn celebrates being 10

We celebrated Kaylyn's birthday with friends on Saturday Jan 26th. She chose a Minute to Win It theme. We played a few of the games before opening presents but I didn't get those pictures. Kaylyn really enjoyed her presents, and as our tradition, we took a picture with each friend and their present.

Go West - 4th Grade Performance

Kaylyn's 4th Grade Class Music Performance (in January 2013) was titled "Go West" and Kaylyn was assigned the part of "Pioneer Woman". By the time of the performance, the songs were already stuck in all of our heads.

Kaylyn as a "dancer" for the song Steamboatin'.  All the girls had boas (Kaylyn used a fun ruffle scarf she got for her birthday from her friend Kiara)

As Pioneer Woman, Kaylyn had a speaking part.  We were blessed to borrow this pioneer dress from my friend Beth who's daughter had used it the year before for the Living Museum.  Braiding her hair completed Kaylyn's pioneer look.
