As we begin 2020, I was pondering ways to track my goals for this year, to be accountable and share/document my progress. A blog post seemed the best fit but why make a new blog when I hae this one. So I dug deep for the login and password as it's been over 6 years since I last posted here. Yikes! So here we go....
1. Scan Old Photos and Slides
Digitize family photos and slides:
- Slides from Farm
- Photo Albums from Farm
- Nana's photos
- College and Early Marriage Years photos
For a combo Christmas/Birthday present, my mom and stepdad gave me an Epson V600. I asked for it because of the slides option. My goal is to scan all the slides that are in storage at the farm where I grew up. I also need to find a way to scan all the old photo albums that are also at the farm. This is in addition to all the photos that I have from college and the early years of our marriage, plus Nana's photos.
2. Daily Gospel Study
In addition to daily 10 minutes reading in the Book of Mormon, spend 20 minutes per day studying:
- Come Follow Me 2020 Book of Mormon
- Inklings (Pres Nelson's challenge/invitation from Oct 2019 Conference)
- General Conference Talks
I need to create a schedule for what days to do which study so that one doesn't get left behind. They are all important to me and I'm learning a ton as I do it. Inklings began right after General Conference in October
3. Purge and Organize
Purge excess items from our home and organize what remains.
- Master Closet
- Master Bedroom
- Master Bath
- Linen Closet
- Hall Bath
- Living Room bookshelves
- CDs and DVDs
- Coat Closet
- Food Rotation System
- Pantry
- Kitchen Cupboards
- Garage
This seems to be a constant goal but I'm going to be more intentional and focused. We started it this week on Monday by removing EVERY SINGLE THING from our closet (well 2 exceptions - my quilting rulers and cutting mats that hang on the wall and the gun safe). I scrubbed the floor and the shelves and we are slowly going through the stacks and purging. The donate pile is HUGE. The clothes we're keeping are back in the closet with a few exceptions that still need to be looked at.
4. Train Brady
Work with Brady on specific behavior goals...
- Clippers
- Walking etiquette/behavior
5. Virtual Walk to Salt Lake City
As a family, walk 1250 miles before our summer trip to Utah.
As a way to help us become healthier and also countdown to summer vacation, we are going to walk 1250 miles as a family. We will add up our individual steps each day and plot where we are on a map). I created maps to track our progress using AAA's TripTik. My first attempt at printing the maps did not work well (no color ink) so reprinting today. I chose to use a TripTik as it plotted the highway mile markers to make it easy for us to know where we are on our virtual journey.
6. Build The Treasured Legacy
Open an Etsy shop and use up yarn stash.
After several sales of knitted/crocheted items and having several friends of friends admire stockings I had made and asking if I had an etsy shop, I'm taking the plunge. We pondered and brainstormed and tested out a variety of shop names. One criteria was to not have the name be yarn specific so that as Adam increases his time in woodworking, we could add some of his items to the shop as well. We chose The Treasured Legacy as our shop name as the skills we're using are part of our treasured legacy. The items I'll make for the shop will hopefully become part of another family's treasures.
On the associated Instagram and Facebook pages, I'll share about the legacy we've received as well as the legacy we're striving to build.
We've reserved the name on etsy, Instagram, Facebook, and gmail. I'm trying to build up a small supply of finished items before we officially "open" the etsy shop but immediate goal is to start publishing on Instagram and Facebook asap.
7. Read 6 non-fiction books
-
One by One by David A Bednar

I LOVE to read, and have to read before I go to sleep each night. But that's fiction. I normally will read 2-3 fiction books per week (or more). But I have to push myself to read non-fiction. I've purchased a ton of non-fiction books fully intending to read, and haven't. The first book I'm going to focus on is One by One by David A Bednar. I borrowed it from a friend over a year ago and immediately started it, but then set it aside for more immediate matters.
This goal will also help with the purging. If I read a book and don't like it, it can go away.
8. Be more Social - Host regular Game Nights
Schedule regular game nights with other "Almost Empty"-Nesters.
As our girls have gotten older, our calendar has filled with their activities and nights without their activities have become rest nights. That means OUR social activities have greatly diminished. This is our attempt to build/re-build friendships as we prepare to become empty-nesters. Morgan is halfway through the 7th grade so in 5 years we'll be looking at her high school graduation and moving on to college. With her personality, I know those 5 years are going to be filled with her at this activity, hanging out with this friend and then that one, and simply time without us.
9. Temple
Attend the Temple at least 12 times in 2020.
As I have a monthly temple trip scheduled with a good friend, this goal should be reasonable to accomplish. Adam has set his goal to go every other month, or 6-7 times in 2020. Add to this, the girls like to attend frequently as well. We did end 2019 in the Nauvoo Temple as we attended with Adam's sister as she went to the Temple for the first time.
10. Clean out Recipes to Try 2020 Pinterest Board
Try out the 390 recipes pinned. Delete those we won't actually try.
I doubt we'll try 390 new recipes in 2020 if I want my family to willingly come to dinner. But that's a LOT of recipes I've pinned and done nothing with. Anything new I find that we want to try will be pinned to a separate Recipes to Try Board on Pinterest so that 390 recipes won't increase.
11. Create 12 Photo Books
Catch up on creating photo books.
We have made several photo books over the years but I've not been consistent. By setting a goal of 12 photo books, I intend to prepare one each month. That does not mean I'll order it that month - I'll prep the books and be watching for deals, and setting money aside in our budget. First ones to focus on will be 2019 in general and our 2019 vacation.
12. Be vigilent
Be vigilent about daily tasks/to dos
I've made a list of things I need to remember and be vigilent about each day. This includes not just washing the laundry but folding it and putting it away. It also includes being vigilent about dishes being done each day, not letting it get put off to tomorrow. Flossing. Drink water (goal is to build up to 1 gallon per day). Just naming a few.
