Bitwarden deployment prerequisite note
For managed Bitwarden desktop deployments on clean Windows endpoints, stage Microsoft Visual C++ v14 Redistributable as an explicit prerequisite before installing or updating Bitwarden. Keeping the runtime dependency separate helps distinguish missing-runtime failures from Bitwarden package detection or update issues.
Official application source: Bitwarden downloads.
Bitwarden close-before-update note
For managed Bitwarden Desktop updates, close Bitwarden.exe before starting the Windows desktop installer. The per-user Windows package can return Exit Code 2 when the desktop client is open during an update, so Intune, ConfigMgr, RMM, or PSADT deployments should either notify users and defer or pre-close the conflicting process before retrying.
This is most important for user-context desktop installs: do not assume a retry under SYSTEM will fix a user-session update that failed while Bitwarden was running. Use the installed desktop application version as the deployment detection signal rather than browser-extension state, and use Bitwarden’s official download page for the current Windows desktop installer source: https://bitwarden.com/download/.
For managed Bitwarden desktop updates, close Bitwarden before running the per-user Windows installer. The User x64 package can return Exit Code 2 when Bitwarden is open during update, so use a pre-close or user-deferral step and verify the installed version afterward.
