Dependency Agent vs Azure Monitor Agent download note

If you landed here from an Azure Monitor Agent download search, do not treat the older Dependency Agent package as the current Azure Monitor Agent installer. Microsoft documents the Dependency Agent as a VM Insights dependency-mapping component that requires Azure Monitor Agent on the same machine, while Azure Monitor Agent itself is installed and managed through Azure Monitor/Arc/Policy workflows or the Windows client MSI path described in Microsoft Learn.

For managed deployments, validate whether you need the legacy Dependency Agent for VM Insights Map/dependency data, or the Azure Monitor Agent for data collection rules. Use Microsoft Learn as the source for both: Dependency Agent requirements and Install and manage Azure Monitor Agent.

Can be deployed via Azure VM extension with typeHandlerVersion 9.10. Requires enableAMA setting when using Azure Monitor Agent.

Notes

Dependency Agent will be retired on 30 June 2028. When using Azure Monitor Agent, the enableAMA setting must be added to the template to prevent the Dependency agent from attempting to send data to the legacy Log Analytics agent.
