OpenAI Codex CLI install and inventory note
For managed deployments of OpenAI Codex CLI, treat it as a developer CLI rather than a traditional machine-wide GUI app. The official project documents global installation with npm install -g @openai/codex; on macOS it also documents brew install --cask codex. On Windows, package the npm-based path only when Node.js/npm are already present or are part of your baseline, then update with the same global npm package flow.
Codex can also launch a desktop-app experience with codex app, and OpenAI publishes separate IDE integration guidance for VS Code, Cursor, and Windsurf. Keep those deployment tracks separate in software inventory: a global npm CLI package, a desktop app launch path, and editor integrations may not share the same detection or update behavior.
