Aleida's Challenge

12.31.2012
Image
Image

I never met Aleida Franklin, but I knew she was a wonderful wife and mother and a brilliant artist. I didn't know Aleida personally, but she taught me something I will never forget.

Aleida and I came together through the scrapbooking industry.  She emailed me to tell me she loved my blog and to ask if I like my short hair-cut. This lead to a series of emails which eventually led me to remark that I really loved how often she posted pictures of herself with her children on her blog. And she replied to me, "Have you ever seen a photograph of your own mother and thought to yourself how fat she looked? Or how she wasn't wearing make-up? Or wasn't dressed in a glamorous outfit?" Of course my answer was no.

She then responded with saying that she made it a goal to take a picture of herself with her children at least once every month. And that to use excuses about how we look, as women, is ridiculous, since our children will never care what we looked like, but only that we had physical evidence of the bond between mother and child.  Read her lovely blog post about it here.

Image

On September 8th, 2008 Aleida blogged a photo of herself, smiling, that read "Live today like there is no tomorrow."  Just four days later, on September 12th, Aleida was struck by another car on her way to work and passed away, leaving 2 small children and a grieving husband. She was 41 years old.  After she passed I thought of how those children must feel to have those precious photographs.

I have made it my personal goal to follow her wise suggestion and I now take photos of myself with my children....double chins, make-up free, bed-head and all.

I invite Mothers everywhere to take Aleida's Challenge. To photograph yourself with your children each and every month. And to post them here or use hashtah #ALEIDASCHALLENGE so that we can see Aleida's legacy unfolding.

Year in Review: 2012

12.30.2012
What did you do in 2012 that you’d never done before? Cooked with a whole bunch of new and unusual flours and grains like quinoa, rice flour, oat flour, almond flour, etc.

What moments from 2012 will remain etched upon your memory, and why? Many scenes from our visit to Utah.  Bianca going to meet Evangeline at the bus stop and running into her arms for a hug....every day.

What was your biggest achievement of the year? Finally gaining control of my health/weight.

Image
What was your biggest failure? Maintaining consistent order in our home....again.  I think that's my answer every year.

Did you suffer illness or injury? No, but I had a major surgery in May 2012.

What was the best thing you bought? an iPhone.  Oh man, I'm in love.

What was your favorite photo of 2012?  I chose three favorites.  Obviously.
Image

Image

Image

What did you get really, really, really excited about? Our trip to Utah over the Summer

What song will always remind you of 2012? "We Are Young" by fun.

What was the best food discovery of 2012? The recipe for my Healthy Double Chocolate Muffins

What do you wish you’d done more of? Exercising and spending one on one time with each of my kids.

What do you wish you’d done less of? Stressing.

What was your favorite new TV show? The Mindy Project

What was the best book you read? The Night Circus
Image

What was your greatest musical discovery? Lucy & the Cloud Parade

What did you want and get?  A supportive and friendly LDS Ward and a great Elementary School for the girls.

What did you want and not get? To see Emily Foley over the Summer

What's something you fell in love with? Quinoa

What was your family's favorite kid's book?  Balloons Over Broadway or The Gingerbread Man: Loose in the School

Image

What kept you sane? My family and close friends.

Who was the best new person you met? Sheena Ahlmer

What was a valuable life lesson you learned in 2012? I learned a lot about what qualities make a good friend.  I discovered commonality of life is much less important than core values like kindness, non-judgement and loyalty.  It was a hard and painful lesson to learn this year, but I am so glad I learned it.

(X and Z just have to have the letter somewhere in the title)

I didn't think I could do it, but I did! (see my 2011 and 2012 lists)
And along the way I rediscovered my passion for reading,
filled my mind with new stories and emerging thoughts
and found books I will love forever.

So I am ready to do it all over again in 2013!

Les Mis: Why I will wait until it's a rental

12.29.2012
Image
Les Miserables is my favorite book. Ever. Ever.
Les Miserables, the musical, is not my favorite.
And I won't be seeing the film until DVD release.

Here's why:

1. I really feel the basic theme and feeling of the musical is largely contrary to the basic theme and feeling of the book.  Obviously they wanted a musical version to have variations in mood and energy, and that's fine, that makes it appeal to a larger audience, but it's not really in the vein of the book.  The book is heartbreaking and inspiring and solemn in a way that cannot be honored in the musical.  Those who fell in love with the musical first will no doubt love the film version, but I am 99.9% sure I won't.  I read the book first, having a limited knowledge of the story line going in and it changed me.  Forever.  I am pretty sure that Victor Hugo's seventh level of hell is hearing the song "Master of the House" with all of its bawdy pretense.

2. This pretty much goes along the same lines as number one.  You know how a truly good film adaption of Pride and Prejudice really must be a mini-series of at least six hours?  The same goes for Les Miserables.  It doesn't matter who you are or what you do, if you try and tell the story of Les Mis in less than 6 hours (and maybe 8) you're going to fail. Miserably.  And every film adaptation of Les Mis has failed miserably in my eyes.

3. Here's where I get so snobby that you start to hate me. Although I have heard that Anne Hathaway is excellent I have heard from actual critics, reviewers and artists that the rest of the leads are wooden, not great singers and not great performers.  I think many who have seen this film may really love it because it is visually appealing and emotionally touching in a highly manufactured way. I think a lot of viewers allow those factors to override their awareness of the literal quality of performances.  And that's fine!  If you are touched by it and love it that's totally cool. But I just probably won't because of numbers one and two on this list and because I know a thing or two about music and vocal performance.

Also, I hate Russel Crow.  I really can't imagine him giving Javert the amazing depth and complexity which that character needs.  As Hugo wrote him you must hate him while also understanding his point of view completely.  He is both sympathetic and dastardly.  Russel Crow is a good actor, but is he that good?  I say no.  And can he really sing?  I may be proved wrong when I catch this on DVD and then I'll stage a formal apology here.

Soul-crushing Baby Names of 2012

12.27.2012
BabyCenter.com recently released their list of UNUSUAL BABY NAMES for 2012.  Their data comes from nearly half a million parents who shared their baby's name with them in 2012. Each of the unusual names below was given to at least two children – so it's not a fluke!

Image

Let's discuss the girl names first, shall we?  There are a few excellent names for a re-booted Teletubbies franchise in Juju, Leeloo, and Ummi along with their evil nemesis, Shoog.  The others girl names I just like to imagine be spoken across the alter.  "I, Brian, take you, Inny..." or "I, Michael, take you, Jagger..."  There won't be a dry-eye in the chapel.

On to the boy names. Adults love dressing their boys in mini baseball onesies to try and force them into traditional gender roles, but imagine the pressure of being named ESPN or, better yet, the performance pressure of bearing the name Casanova.  And Savior.  I mean, that's a tall order.  The male counterpart of the wedding game is imaging these boys becoming judges (maybe even Supreme Court Judges) someday and the bailiff saying, "The honorable judge Popeye Smith presiding" or "The honorable judge Thunder McMillan presiding" or "I'm Doctor Google Jones and I'll be performing your surgery today".

And Rogue, you awesome baby name, you made BOTH lists!  I mean, congrats!  The best part is that no matter what your baby's gender, you can save them all that hassle of changing their name when they become a stripper.  It's a win/win...really it is.

Sad days that the name Tron made the list since I have a Brother-In-Law named Tron and he's wicked awesome.  I'm just sayin'.

i get kind of annoyed when people
use the words college and university

Christmas 2012

12.25.2012

So, this year I decided not to take a lot of photos of our Christmas celebrations.  I wanted to be able to really savor each moment and relax a bit.  So there are just a few photo evidences of our day, but it was a great one.  Here's how it went.

On Christmas Eve I was still sewing the girls' jammies.  My sewing machine needle broke twice, prompting me to say a swear word in front of my kids.  I don't know what the deal was, it's not like I was sewing them out of denim or anything.

Image

But I did finally get them finished and they turned out really well.  On Black Friday I went to Joann Fabrics with the two older girls and let them pic the flannel fabric.

Image
( The mommy-sewn Christmas jammies as modeled by two and a half of my children. #classicbonka )
We had a short Christmas reading from the bible and sang a holiday song and then the kids were off to bed.  Matt and I cleaned up the front room and wrapped the presents.  We watched a movie and had a nice, peaceful evening together.  We only buy each family member three gifts (to symbolize the three wisemen), but this year we got a lot of good board games as family gifts, so our tree was packed!  Matt and I made the Christmas Strata (otherwise called Breakfast Casserole) and popped it into the fridge. We went to bed at 2:00 am.

Image

On Christmas morning the girls were up at 6:30am and ready to go.  I popped the Strata into the oven and we got to the presents.  It was lovely and so many of the gifts were truly meaningful and sweet.  Our last family gift was two little African Dwarf Frogs that the girls named Cutie and Shelly and Bianca promptly threw a plastic egg from her newly acquired kitchen set into the bowl.

We had our delicious breakfast and tidied up the room.  The girls played with their presents happily (and sometimes UNhappily) for the rest of the morning.

At 2:00 we threw a big, fat Christmas Pot Roast into a pot and got dressed in nice clothes to meet our friends, the Busaths, at a local Nursing Home where we had arranged to visit and sing Christmas Carols to the residents.  This is a tradition our family started three years ago when we were invited by some of our friends in Mount Joy to participate.  We did it for two years in a row and then missed last Christmas because some of us were sick.

Image
I looked up nursing homes in our are and we made the arrangements.  This is always my favorite part of Christmas day.

Matt brought his guitar and the Busaths brought three beautiful singing voices.  This gentleman loved playing his mini guitar for us and Bianca repeatedly wanted to shake his hand, which he loved.

Image

Some residents just sat quietly, not even making eye contact as we sang, but others raised their voices to join our songs and my heart felt like it might burst with happiness.  This is a Christmas tradition I want to never let go of.

Image
( It was stuffed animal heaven in that room. Bianca couldn't resist! )
After an hour of singing we headed home.  Poor Bianca had missed her nap and she was on the brink of destruction.  We made a delicious dinner of pot roast and gravy, roasted potatoes and HEALTHY green bean casserole (which was divine)!  I was out of steam by the evening so we will make our traditional Cranberry Upside-down Cake tomorrow for a Boxing Day celebration!

Why don't Americans celebrate Boxing Day?  Weird.

I finished the night with a 2 Hour talk sesh with Emily Foley where we covered bipolar disorder, Mexico, horse riding stories, BYU road trips, ferrets, stupid baby names, game hunting, green bean casserole and anchor jewelry among other things. One of my best Christmas presents this year.

Christmas Eve

12.24.2012
Image

Lift up your head and be of good cheer; for behold, the time is at hand, and on this night shall the sign be given, and on the morrow come I into the world, to show unto the world that I will fulfill all that which I have caused to be spoken by the mouth of my holy prophets.

Friday Fave: Period Tracker App

12.23.2012
Image
Is it weird for me to recommend a Period Tracker app? Well, get over it, because I am.

It's free (unless you want to pay money to change the background graphics to reflect holidays and seasons. But really, do you?) and it's so easy to use.

When you start your period you open the app and tap the huge button. Then when you're done you tap it again.

Now, here's where the magic comes in. After gleaning this data for a few months it can predict exactly when your period is coming and will send you a notification to prepare you for the impending doom. It also tells you your fertility window and ovulation dates. You can track your period symptoms (but why?) and even track incidents of friskiness with your mate.

This week I used the calendar to predict just how un-awesome our approaching planned Anniversary trip might be and when we could rearrange it so the we didn't celebrate ten years of marriage with me barking at my husband for rubbing my neck and shoulders "like a girl".

Just get the app. You'll love it.

I got a comment on a post this week from a lovely Bloggie.

Em Said:
You are so organized. Or you are fooling everyone. Either way, good job.

Oh, sweet, innocent, Em.
You've been duped!
(although that is not my intention).

If you follow me on Instragram then you had the
privilege of seeing this photo I posted yesterday of our front room
(minus the arrows and words...I added those just for you).

Busy, Busy, Mama's Dizzy

12.17.2012
December is flying by and we are speeding towards Christmas at break-neck speed.

I still need to sew family stockings AND family pajamas before Dec 24.
The girls have a week at school filled with holiday parties and gift exchanges.
I am working on finishing up presents for my handmade exchange.

Image

Tomorrow I am mailing the mother of all Christmas packages to my in-laws to distribute to the family in Utah.

The good news is, part of the reason December is flying by is that we are having tons of fun:

- reading lots of holiday picture books

Image

- finishing up the very last book for my A to Z Reading Challenge 2102
- cookie decorating with friends (who we got sick...sorry!)

Image

- busting out the dreidle...love.

Image

- candy cane milkshakes
- mailing out holiday cards

Image

- buying and wrapping presents for cousins
- watching our favorite holiday movies
- making lots of holiday crafts

Image
Image

- getting ready to make sugar plums for winter solstice
-  playing with our new "little people" nativity set
- visiting with Mall Santa

Image

- drinking sugar-free hot chocolate
- eating massive amounts of zipper oranges

Image

- teaching holiday songs to Bianca
- decorating the house

Image

- listening to holiday CDs in the car

Image

- doing Christmas puzzles and games

Image
