What was your biggest achievement of the year?  Having Cici, achieving my goal of being more consistent with keeping my house in order.

What was your biggest failure? Being patient with my children.

What was a valuable life lesson you learned in 2014? That I can do really hard things. I was stretched beyond what I thought my limits were this year and I made it through. Cecilia | 3 months

12.29.2014
Dear Cecilia,

After three months of non-stop crying we finally cracked the code to your contentment.  Let me explain.  In the hospital you drank Enfamil formula.  Within days I could tell you were lactose sensitive (like all of our other kids) so we switched you to soy formula, Wal*Mart brand soy formula.

You were very fussy, but that was normal. When we switched Jude over he was also fussy for a week.  But that week stretched into several weeks and then months.  We tried alternative formula brands.  Similac Soy and Target brand soy.  When neither of those worked we decided maybe your allergies were stronger. We tried Enfamil Nutramigen (which the redheads used) with no success and then Similac Alimentum. And you just kept crying. I started to wonder if you had urinary reflux, like Evangeline.
Image

At the beginning of December, with our doctor's appt still three weeks away, we switched you to Babies R Us brand soy (because it was on sale). It kind of worked!  We started seeing little smiles.

Image

For the first time the clouds parted....just a bit. You went from crying 100% of the time to 60% of the time. We were ecstatic!

Image

We went back to Babies R Us to get more and were informed they had discontinued their soy line of formula.  Oh no!  As a last resort I went to the store and bought the Enfamil brand of soy formula.  TA DA!!!  A miracle.

Image

Today you are three months old and we are finally seeing the real you.  A sweet, little, happy, monkey who smiles at strangers and seldom cries.  I have always loved you, but these past two weeks I have really started to LIKE you.  Spending time with you is a joy.  Your funny little swirly hair, your deep blue eyes, your bright smile. These things are much easier to appreciate when you are not constantly wailing.  Sad, but true.

Image

At today's appointment you were 10.31 lbs (10 perc.) and 22.5 inches (19 perc).  You are still my little mouse, but I expect you will grow more now that your formula is treating you well.  Mostly, I am so happy you are feeling better.  As hard as it was to hear you cry all the time, it was even harder thinking you were sad or your tummy was hurting and not know how to fix it! Here's to blue skies ahead!

I love you kid,
Mommy

The Peppermint Pig Tradition | Ahern Style

12.27.2014
Image

During our years in Pennsylvania we became aware of the Peppermint Pig.

THE HISTORICAL TRADITION:  This "Peppermint Pig is cast of hard peppermint candy. The pig is honored in Victorian holiday tradition as a symbol of good health, happiness and prosperity.  These special "Peppermint Pigs" came to represent much more. On New Years Eve you put the hard candy pig in the velvet bag and the  Pig is passed amongst those gathered. Each person recalls a happy memory from the year and then uses the little hammer to tap the pig within the bag.  Then you eat the broken pieces in hopes of prosperity for the coming year.

So, we got a peppermint pig each year over the past few years.  We added the tradition that whomever reaches into the bag and gets the pierce with the tail gets a special wish for the coming year.  There were a few issues though.  The peppermint pig breaks into viciously sharp shards.  It was hard to break for the little kids. The shards were too hard to eat since it's like a huge chunk of candy cane.

I decided to change things up. Adulterous? Maybe.

THE AHERN TRADITION: I bought some Chocolate Pig MoldsImageon Amazon. I melt Bright Pink Wilton Candy MeltsImage and add 2-3 drops of Peppermint OilImage (not the same as peppermint extract) and then pour them into the molds. Then, one pig gets a special chunk of real candy cane hidden in the middle before the candy melts harden.

On new Years Eve our family gathers after dinner and each family member recalls a favorite memory from the year and takes a bit of their pig.  We keep taking turns until each person has eaten their candy pig. Whomever finds the chunk of candy cane in their pig gets to make a special wish for the coming year.

If you want the real deal, you can always buy a legit Peppermint Pig Gift Set with Hammer and Pouch HERE.Image

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

December Daily 2014 | Days 14-20

12.21.2014

December 14 | After dinner tonight we headed down to the den and watched a favorite holiday film. The movie "ELF" always makes us laugh together. The kids loved it and so did the parents.
Afterward we sang our nightly carol which was "Here We Come a Wassailing" which is one of my favorites, but which our kids kind of hated. You can't win them all!

December 15 | It was Bianca’s last day of school before Christmas break. we made small gifts for her classmates and teacher. The kids each got a small, star-shaped, slinky. Her teacher got a mug with treats and a redbox code for a free movie rental. Bianca watched a movie in her pajamas at school and she loved it! They kids also exchanged small gifts.

A new friend dropped by and gave our kids a basket filled with activities to pass the days while we are on school break. The light of Christ shining from others has really lighted our December this year!

December 16 | Today I packed up all five kids and headed into Salt Lake City for a “Mommy Play-Date” with my friend Jill. We met at City Creek shopping center and ate lunch at Johnny Rockets. Burgers, fries and shakes for everyone! Then we went to the Disney Store where they were having a sale and I got the last two gifts we needed to completely finish our Christmas present shopping for this year, including stockings. We watched fountain shows, gazed at the Salt Lake Temple from the sky walk and stopped at Kneaders for dessert. It was a fun day filled with holiday hustle and bustle.

December 17 | This evening Jude and I stayed home while Matt took the girls to a live Nativity. The performers acted out the birth of Jesus and had speaking parts as well as leading the crowd in carols. Bianca came home so filled with excitement about the birth of baby Jesus!

December 18 | Today the kids and I made our SECOND batch of one of our favorite (and easiest) holiday treats: Rolo Turtles. We gobbled them all up in one day...again. We may need to make a THIRD batch before the season is over.

In an attempt to avoid my yearly "Merry Christmas Meltdown" I began cutting out the jammies tonight for sewing. Hopefully I can avoid the last minute rush and have a more peaceful Christmas Eve.

December 19 | Tonight as we sat for our Christmas Carol Advent I was happy to glance over and see the entire family snuggled onto one couch. I love these people!

After the kids were in bed I opened and organized the candy I had bought to make Gingerbread Houses with cousins tomorrow. I also made a batch of Gingerbread dough for cookies. I made sure to omit the butter so that Cousin Max can eat them too with his dairy allergy. Everything is ready for a fun-filled day tomorrow.

December 20 - Afternoon | Uncle Jon, Auntie Liz, and family arrived at 11:30 am for lunch and fun. In the morning I had baked a loaf of artisan bread. We had homemade beef stew for lunch with the bread and some butter. Then we cleared the table and set up for Gingerbread Houses. Ella requested we use graham crackers this year instead of real gingerbread....awesome! All of the kids sat at the table and made houses, barns, apartment buildings and cars. The mess was unholy, but worth it! I also made a batch of Gingerbread men to send home with the cousins. It was a fun afternoon!

Image

December 20 - Evening | In the evening we headed to Salt Lake City to attend a concert Dennis was performing in Temple Square. There was a very large accident on the highway and we finally arrived just after the concert ended. Blast! But we still had a wonderful time walking through Temple Square and seeing the lights and the glorious Temple. We have been gone for so long that these sights took my breath away! We had dinner at the Lion House Pantry with Grandma and Grandpa, the Chapmans, and the Arnolds. It was such a magical night! And we can still see the concert tomorrow night at a different location.

Family of Seven

Image

I wish this photo had truly turned out. Although it seems like it did to you, it's really only good for blog use.  It was badly unfocused and had to be sharpened quite a bit. So it has to stay small.

It was all my stupid camera's fault.  My wonderful sister-in-law took a gazillion photos, but it turned out my SD card was corrupted so only three actually appeared on the card.  I know. The worst.  But we can all still enjoy it in its post-processing, web-use-only form.

Enjoy!

FREEBIE: Printable Redbox Code Gift Cards

12.15.2014
Image
I saw a great idea on a blog this year and had to share it!  I first saw this on OVER THE BIG MOON.  Pam shared a printable that you can attach to a bag of microwave popcorn. It's super cute and you can print hers HERE.

Redbox allows you to purchase them on their website in bundles of 5, 10, 20 or 50 under their Redbox Gifts section (link at the bottom of the page). You order them online and the codes are emailed. So, you just enter your own email address in the recipient space and you’ll receive an email with all the codes listed!

I wanted to use this great idea, but wanted to be able to put my codes into a mug I had already purchased.  I also thought it would be handy if the recipient could tuck this card into their wallet for easy use at any time when they were out and passed a Redbox. Am I the only Impulse Redbox-er?  So I designed these cards and tucked them a mug with hot cocoa mixes, chocolates, candy canes and a cutie orange.

Mine are four to a page and you can print a certain color by selecting the page it's on to print or print off a few of each color!  Note: the codes come in bundles of five. We had three teachers so we printed one for each of them and then printed two to give to a certain cousin one of our kids has in the name draw.

CLICK HERE to print these off for your teachers, neighbors, and friends!

December 07 | This morning at Choir Practice our family was asked if we would sing a song at the Ward Christmas Party this Saturday. So, before church, we broke out some instruments and began practicing. I was so excited to finally try out our ukelele and ended up practicing all morning.

During sacrament meeting at church Eva drew the cutest picture of marshmallows relaxing in a cup of hot chocolate. She is so awesome.

We finally located the missing tree skirt and put it under our tree for the very first time. It’s so fancy! I love it.

December 08 | Today I worked on our annual CD of holiday music. We add a few new songs to it each year and keep our old favorites. Now, this isn't traditional Christmas music. We like new takes on old classics by undiscovered Indie Artists and quirky covers.

This year there are a lot of new songs by Jack Johnson, Guster, Weezer and old favorites like “Christmas Island”.

I burned the CD and took it into the car for a quick errand. When we got home the kids begged to keep driving so we could hear the rest. So we did and I loved every minute of it.

December 09 | One of my favorite holiday traditions. The Scholastic Warehouse sale. I went this afternoon with Ella, Jude and Cecilia. We got so many great books for so cheap! I stacked them all up and gazed at the pile, grinning. Two years ago we started a tradition of giving our favorite picture book of that year to our close friends and family. And this year we will do it again. There is nothing that excites me more than gifting a book that we love to a family that we love.

December 10 | Today was a very busy day and I wondered if we could make time to let Christmas in at all. But in the end we did.

We sang our Advent Christmas song and I handed out these wooden jingle bells I bought for each of the kids. They loved shaking them in time to "Donde Este Santa Claus?" and dancing around the living room.

Then we drew names for the family present exchange. We ended the night with a small craft and there was no fighting or crying for 10 minutes in a row. It's a Christmas miracle!

Before bed we sat down with our no-stress Christmas-song Advent and taught our kids about the song "The First Noel".

December 11 | Today I opened an early Christmas present from my in-laws: a Bluetooth speaker system. The kids and I spent the morning dancing around the kitchen as the music played.

We dropped off Bianca for a play date and preschool and the rest of the kids and I headed to a Christmas concert by the Crescent Super Band. Not only was the music amazing, but we got served hot chocolate from the best Mrs. Claus ever AND Evangeline won a door prize of five Christmas CDs.

Before dinner the redheads and I did a Christmas craft and then Ella and I made easy microwave caramels. They are delicious!! Today was a very Christmasy day!

Before bed we sat down with our no-stress Christmas-song Advent and taught our kids about the song "The First Noel".

December 12 | Today was a hard day. I cooked and cleaned. I organized and unpacked. I finished the Christmas shopping and ran errands all day - with five kids in tow. I cut and wrapped 30 homemade caramels. I yelled at my kids. I listened to a crying baby. I was mad at my husband. I felt lonely and exhausted. I cried at the end of the day.

After 1 am I tried to sleep, but couldn't. I went into the front room and turned on the lights on the tree. Those soft lights seemed to calm my spirit. I wondered at the power of those lights. This caused me to reflect on the Light of the World. I thought about Christ's power to calm, sooth, and comfort. And he extends that power to people who have suffered massive, gut-wrenching, hardships AND to tired moms who have had a hard day. For that, I am thankful.

Before bed we sat down with our no-stress Christmas-song Advent and taught our kids about the song "The First Noel".

December 13 | Today was our church Christmas party as new members of the Layton 37th Ward. The theme was Dr. Seuss and the church was decorated so well! Amazing centerpieces and decorations. The kids got to watch "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" and do a craft while the adults played a get-acquainted game. There was dinner and then a small program.

After a week of practicing, our family took the stage in hula skirts, leis, and with kazoos and a ukelele. It was fantastic! We belted out "Christmas Island", we danced, we hula-ed. It was great!

After the musical number a Grinch appeared to give out candy canes. I have to say I thought he was a bit creepy. But Evangeline went right up for a photo op. Brave girl.

Before bed we sat down with our no-stress Christmas-song Advent and taught our kids about the song "The First Noel".
