Seven Desires: Looking Past What Separates Us to Learn What Connects Us
Audible Audiobook
– Unabridged
This new take on relationships changes everything! By examining the seven desires we all share, Mark and Debra Laaser illustrate how men and women are actually more alike than different. Do you long for ways to:
- Tune in more closely to your children?
- Connect on a deeper level with your spouse?
- Strengthen friendships?
- Reach a fuller relationship with God?
The Laasers look past what separates us to examine what connects us. Instead of focusing on how to sidestep or compensate for perceived differences, they dig deeper, to the core of our souls, to examine how the basic needs of all people make us more alike than different.
Seven Desires explores the common desires God has given us--to be heard, affirmed, blessed, safe, touched, chosen, and included. Using stories, biblical references, and sound psychological principles, the Laasers explain each desire and show us how we seek it and what it feels like to have it truly fulfilled. You will learn healthy ways to embody these desires in your relationships and receive the tools you need to start repairing and rebuilding relationships and developing new skills for creating emotional and spiritual intimacy.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2025Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis is a great read for anyone! My son read it first and could not stop referencing it in everyday conversation which prompted me to read it and then gift it to several friends! It a definite fit your home library! Very enlightening. Price is appropriate.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2018Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseLike many marriage books, this one helps you change the only person you have control of... yourself. Does a great job of connecting what our "heart desires" with our motivation and behavior. The premises is laid out in the first chapter on the seven desires proper, then the rest of the book helps you see how these drive behavior in various (mostly unhealthy) ways, then finally some help in re-directing these in healthy ways. The first chapter alone is worth the price, but really pays off if you can track and implement this idea. Thanks Mark and Debbie for a great book.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2017Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseNo one had a perfect childhood. This is an excellent book for examining how you were wounded in childhood and how those wounds still impact you today. I would recommend this book to anyone working with people in ministry. It's very helpful in understanding why people react the way they do and how to pursue healing emotional wounds. This will be a book that I reread and give to others. A lot of the examples in the book involve married couples. I'm not married and absolutely love this book. It is a very helpful resource for ministering to people. Emotional and relational difficulties are not exclusive to marriage. This book is an excellent read no matter your stage of life.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 14, 2011Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseThe Seven Desires of Every Heart is one of the best books I have ever read for putting
words to the desires of my heart. It not only helped me understand my own desires and
wants but it has helped me understand others more. I found a lot of freedom in looking
at the 7 desires and how some of these basic needs were not met for me as a child.
I was able to begin to grieve the loss of them in my life and heal. I highly recommend
this book to others. I think it would be best read with at least one other person.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2017Book was good, using it in conjunction with therapy. But I paid $12 for it and when the book arrived it had a $1.99 sticker on the back of it.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 5, 2023No matter what you’ve been through, this book will give you so much clarity into yourself and why you display the thoughts, feelings and reactions that you have in adulthood. The concepts are not revolutionary by any means and the Lassar’s are simply rebranding some old Systems theories, but each chapter is beneficially worded and will propel you to have insight in yourself while maintaining a perspective of grace towards your past self.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2013I have seen, first hand, with my own eyes the result of the work the Laaser's do in the lives of people who's marriages are beyond hope. Their work did not "fix" the couple; it "changed" them.
If you are not dealing with marital issues but you still live on planet earth and have to deal with other people this is also a must read. CAUTION: Read this book slowly. Read it when you are fully awake; no TV on to distract you. Read it with a pen and paper at hand to take notes. You will get out of it what you put in.
