The Look Kindle Edition
In this celebration of style, from the moment she entered the public eye during her husband’s U.S. Senate campaign through her time as the first Black First Lady and today as one of this country’s most influential figures, Michelle Obama shares how she uses the beauty and intrigue of fashion to draw attention to her message.
Featuring the voices of Meredith Koop, Obama’s trusted stylist, as well as her makeup artist Carl Ray, hairstylists Yene Damtew, Johnny Wright, and Njeri Radway, and many of the designers who have dressed Obama for notable events, The Look brings readers behind the scenes not only to reveal how her most memorable looks came together but also to tell a powerful story about how we present ourselves.
Obama’s intimate and candid stories illuminate how her approach to dressing has evolved throughout her life—from the colorful sheath dresses, cardigans, and brooches she wore during her time as First Lady to the bold suits, denim, and braids of her post-White House life and all the active looks and beautiful gowns in between.
In The Look, Michelle Obama explores the joy and the purpose of fashion and beauty and how—when wielded with grace and care—they can uplift and affirm the values one holds most dear. Confidence, she concludes, cannot be put on. But when you’re wearing something that’s intentional or beloved, clothing can make you feel like the best version of yourself.

Editorial Reviews
Review
“[Obama] writes well, and honestly, about the havoc it can wreak on one’s sense of self to have to dress every morning for what would be, for the majority of people, the most visible day of their lives. . . . The Look, an unprecedented project among first ladies, may be the only first-person book to give such devoted treatment to the place of image-making in presidential politics. Some of the The Look’s best commentary on that topic comes from the members of Obama’s style and beauty team, who contribute writing about the nuts and bolts of zhuzhing up one of the most famous women in the world.”—Slate
“A delightful tip of the hat to the pleasures—and power—of glamour.”—Kirkus Reviews
“A fashionista’s fantasy come true . . . But The Look is more than just fashion mood-board fodder. . . . In The Look, [Obama] is holding a mirror up to the culture that has ogled her and women like her for years.”—Oprah Daily
“The evolution of Obama’s personal aesthetic, from the time Barack was elected for his first term in office to now, is finally given its due in The Look. Reading it grants an unedited look . . . at her sartorial choices—outside of the external commentary–backed echo chamber that cropped up while she served in one of the most important and public-facing positions of our time.”—Women’s Wear Daily

Wonderful Coffee table book, and Gift idea
Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2026The perfect coffee table book! I feel so honored to have a piece of history I can look back on the days that made history for America. Mrs. Obama set the bar real high and I sincerely hope the young girls growing up in today’s world see how education and staying true to yourself pays off. She’s
an excellent example how you can step into our world have a better life with strong possibilities a will and desire to be more than just ….. as I l read through her book “The Look” the beautiful pictures of both the former US president Obama, and the first lady Mrs. Obama it took me back in time. I remember those days..
I’m very proud of Mrs. Obama,, she (they) weren’t only thinking about (themselves) herself. She was thinking of all people regardless, of race, Creed, financial status or color, while maintaining her integrity when choosing clothes, hair styles etc.
A beautiful book and very well executed. The book is a great gift idea.
Love 💕

I love it!!! A great lesson about your Intentions
Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2025My take….
I hope those who reads this book understand she’s reflecting on why HER appearance commanded others to take note of her intentions where ever show she was. This book tells the story according to the path on her journey.
It’s not about the money (most don’t have extra on hand). If we could just think about how we present ourselves (not the features of our bodies), in our self care and choice of clothing, and attitude. Clothing can come from thrift stores, a mall, a luxury designer shop. The point is to look our best. It’s like don’t wear sweats, flip flop, and crocs when the occasion calls for a neat t-shirt, neat jeans, and a simple sandal or casual shoe. How we dress can have a positive or negative reaction to how we feel and that projects onto others.
I often have family members and friends tell me it doesn’t matter what you wear, no one will notice what you have on. If I listen to them it means I don’t care about my appearance. They mean I look ok however I dress. I had to learn to respect myself enough to ensure I’m happy when I leave the house. When I dress accordingly I draw people to me that know exactly I have a goal even if it’s going to get a gallon of milk. I’m neat I smile more and receives smiles in return. I stopped going to the gym in 10yr old sweat suit. I shopped around and purchased used athletic wear. Everyone noticed and complimented me on my smile, not my clothes. I felt better so I smiled and engaged with people about their day and not simply yell out from a chair “the price I was willing to take. I was offered VP job for a small company while having a yard sale after someone noticed my energy, In a field I excel in. I had on a simple shirt, neat jeans, and my favorite sandals. We made over $600 in 3 hrs. These were not expensive name brand items and had been put out on previous yard Past yard sales I looked like i dragged myself out of bed put things out and sat on the porch only getting up if someone asked a question. Each time we made about $150 in 5hrs.

Great Coffee Table Book
Reviewed in the United States on March 1, 2026The quality of the book itself is very good. Lots of stunning photos and the story behind them. Compared to her previous books, this one feels a little less in her voice and more narrated by someone else.
