Activity Days Talent & Recognition Night
Before our ward split and we ended up in a new ward we put on a talent and recognition night for our Activity Days girls. Weeks leading up to it we asked the girls to share a talent that they had. Whether it was a performing talent or not, we asked them to bring something to display on tables we would have set up for them and they would each get up and tell us about what that brought.
A couple of the girls took this VERY seriously. One of them rose her hand during one activity and said, "Well I'm good at basketball and singing so could I sing while I shoot hoops?" We told them that it is great if they have more than one talent that they want to share, but that in the interest of saving time they needed to limit their sharing to ONE of talent. They could bring as much as they wanted to display on the tables, but when it came time to share or perform something they needed to do just one.
So we had tables set up that day and asked the families to come and support their girls. We had a great turn out. We filled the primary room, standing room only! It was awesome! On any given day, our group of girls ranges from 10-22 girls. This night we had 15 girls and their families come! WOW!
Some girls brought pictures they had drawn, one made smoothies as her talent, one brought in jars of food she had canned/jarred with her mom, one brought in soccer trophies, another clogged for us, one of the girls loves to hand embroider and brought in lots of things she had done to show us, then we had girls that were in performing arts that showed off playbills and costumes of things, a couple of girls that are in gymnastics and performed for us and we even saw a Scooby Doo collection (well part of one anyway). A couple of the girls even sang for us! That was lovely!
Alana decided she wanted to share her talent for music and played the piano. She did such a great job!
(unfortunately I can't upload anymore pictures right now because I have apparently met my picture quota on here. I am gonna have to pull some of this off and get it printed like I want and delete them so I can post more pictures.)
About half way through the evening we did the recognition portion and presented each of the girls a bracelet with different little charms on them, one for each of the 13 Articles of Faith. If the girls had memorized their Articles of Faith (we went over one/two a month) and recited it to one of us (the leaders) or their parents they signed it off and got the corresponding charm added to their bracelet. Some of the girls only had a couple charms and others had a lot! They absolutely loved this and we told them to make sure to keep working on them and to recite them to their parents or find one of us and recite it so they could fill their bracelets. (Now that the wards have been re-done, the girl's parents will email us and we will get their charms to them)
It was such a lovely evening with everyone that came. I am sad I am no longer with most of them because of the changes to the boundaries and what not, but just received a new calling that is going to allow me to still serve some of the girls I had before, so I'm a happy camper!
