Happy ONE YEAR to my little shop, Mae and Jane!

Eight days into 2014 I took a huge leap of faith and started this dream of mine. It was a year full of challenges, late nights, and hard lessons. Thankfully, the work paid off and this first year was such a rewarding experience. I feel so incredibly blessed with the success of this little business, and the support given by so many. I still have much to learn, but I can't wait to see what lies in store for 2015!

To celebrate reaching this milestone, I have teamed up with one of my favorite and most adored handmade shops, Freshly Picked. That's right! We will be giving away one pair of Freshly Picked Moccasins [in the size AND color of your choice!], along with a $50 Mae & Jane shop credit to one of YOU! I can't think of a better way to kick of my one year celebration!

[Review]

For those who may not be familiar, Freshly Picked is a company that sells high quality baby moccasins. It was founded and built by Susan Petersen, a hardworking mama who couldn't find any well-made, soft-soled shoes for her little boy. With some scrap leather found at a yard sale, she created her first prototype which she then used to start Freshly Picked!
Image
Her shoes have gone through six design changes over the past five years, which prove that the company values quality, and strive to give customers the best version of their shoe possible. As a result, their moccasins can be found in select Nordstrom stores and online. What a success story!

Freshly Picked moccasins come in a wide variety of colors [seen here]. They really have done a fabulous job of giving their customers a variety to choose from. It is hard to pick just one! The team over at Freshly Picked sent a pair of their Walnut colored moccasins for me and my Olivia to try. I ended up choosing a classic and gender neutral color, so she could wear them with just about any outfit!
Image
ImageAs seen in the above image, the shoes arrived in a cute, modern dust bag! Cute packaging is a huge plus for me, and they were spot on! The shoes are made out of high-quality leather, with an elastic around the ankle to ensure the shoe stays on the child's foot. Keeping shoes on Olivia seems to be one of my biggest challenges with her, so this was such a big deal for me.
Image
When pulled from the packaging I also noticed that there was no marker for which shoe was made for the left or right foot. After her first wear though, each moccasin starts to mold and curve to the foot, allowing you to recognize which foot it belongs on.
Image
Image
These shoes come in sizes 1-10 [the sizing chart can be found here]. I found the shoes to fit true to size, and are so easy to put on and take off.

Olivia absolutely LOVES these shoes (since they have been worn exclusively for the past few months!). I love how she never complains while wearing them, and that they stay on and never get lost! She also receives so many compliments on them wherever we go!
Image
Image
Although $60 is a substantial price to put on baby shoes, I must admit that these are worth every penny. The quality alone has sold me, and I'm a mama on a tight budget! The fact that they have been worn for months straight without a decrease in quality, are comfortable for my little one, and do not fall off, are key points that any mother wants on her side.

A Trip to Disney

Monday, November 3, 2014

We just go back from hanging out with Mickey and friends down in Florida. It was a week long adventure that was so full of magic and wonder for us all. I still can't believe it is over.

My little Ava had been talking about going to Cinderella's castle [Disney World] for the longest time. I guess it all started when I accidentally, out of desperation, told her we would go if she would just get the potty business down. Potty training was horrible. Months and months of frustration, tears and a short-tempered mama. But the bribe worked, obviously.

Brian was away from us girls for two straight months for medical away rotations. We thought this trip would be very much deserved and enjoyed once the two months were over. So that is exactly what we did. Brian rotated in Georgia [September] and South Carolina [October]. The girls and I flew to Georgia to stay with my parents for a few days at the end of October while he finished up in South Carolina. Brian drove down to meet us that Friday, [finally!] and we took off to Florida the next day.

We arrived at the resort around 4pm, dropped off our bags and headed to the park. Both girls were such troopers during that car ride, but Ava was a bit anxious to finally meet all the princesses. Meeting Cinderella and Rapunzel were the first on the list.

ImageImage
We learned a lot about Ava during that week. For instance, she is absolutely scared of princes. She wanted nothing to do with Aladdin, Prince Charming, or even Mickey when he pretended to be a prince when he saw Ava dressed as Elsa. Silly girl. Also, when she gets nervous, her hands immediately go to her mouth. You'll notice this in many of the pictures taken. But her excitement overcame her nervousness most of the time, since she ran up to each of the characters [besides the princes, of course] and gave them a big hug when it was her turn. That night we also saw the electrical light parade. Our girls were wide-eyed the entire time. It was a great way for Ava to see all the characters at once. It confirmed to her that certain characters really were at Disney World, and were waiting to meet her that week!
ImageImageImage
[I made Minnie Mouse witch hats for each girl to wear around the park since we went the week before Halloween. That is a great time of year to go, by the way!]
Image
Sunday morning we had breakfast with some of the Disney characters. We saw Pluto, Goofy, and Minnie Mouse! Ava was on cloud nine, and had an eye on them at all times. I don't think she touched much of her food. When they came to our table she gave them all big hugs, put her hands over her mouth and tried her best to smile for the camera. Oh, I love that girl.
Image
Image
ImageImage
Although the day started off the best way possible, it began to go downhill once we hit the two o'clock mark. Our girls were tired, and incredibly whiny.  Lesson learned: do not stay out too late the night before. A good amount of sleep was required by both girls in order for the following day to go smoothly. We left the park around three that day, thinking that Olivia wouldn't nap in the stroller. Turns out she conked out on the monorail right after we left. We went back anyway, had an early dinner and put the cranks to bed. Mom and Dad enjoyed Netflix, so not all was lost.
Image
Another tip:  If you have little ones, buy a box of Uncrustables and pack one for each child that day for lunch. Those little sandwiches saved us during that mad lunch hour. Brian and I didn't eat much of a lunch while we were there. We survived off of small snacks like granola bars and apples. We would grab a treat or two, [you can't go to Disney without getting a Dole Whip. That would just be cruel!] but would go to an early dinner each night, then head to the resort and put the girls to bed.
Image
Once we discovered this little routine of ours, the rest of the trip was golden.
Image
We tackled Magic Kingdom the first two days, then took on Animal Kingdom. Animal Kingdom can be done in one day, in my opinion. We saw the Lion King Show [it was amazing!], went on a Safari, and even found Pocahontas!
Image
[Ava surprised us by jumping out of the stroller when she saw these girls dancing. She went right up to them and joined the fun.]

We went to Hollywood Studios the fourth day, where we sang songs with Anna and Elsa, met the Disney Junior Characters, and Brian and I about peed our pants riding the Rock 'n' Roller Coaster. Maybe if I read the description of the coaster, like he did, I wouldn't have been in such shock right out of the gate. Holy cow.
ImageImage
There isn't much to do in that park with little ones, so we got on a ferry boat with the intention of going back to the Magic Kingdom. The ferry dropped us off at Epcot, but the ferry entrance is nowhere near the monorails that we were planning on riding over to the other park, so we ended up spending our time in Epcot. I knew nothing about this park, and was pleasantly surprised by it! Epcot is so unique, and a definite must see! I could have spent hours there tasting all the different cuisines and enjoying the various shows and music. Some day when I am kid-free, I will do just that.
Image
We spent the rest of our days at Magic Kingdom. We saw just about every character there, rode rides multiple times, and just about wore ourselves out. I couldn't believe how smooth the trip went with two little ones though. We hit the jackpot. Most people don't advise tackling Disney until your child is at least 7. I beg to differ. If you start each day with a bit of patience and flexibility, taking young children is a blast and well worth it.

Other tidbits of the trip:
- Ava hates Splash Mountain and the Dinosaur ride at Animal Kingdom [bad idea, Brian].
- I think Ava loved waiting for the dumbo ride [due to the play area] more than the actual ride. Olivia throughly enjoyed both.
- Both girls loved the carousel.
- It is still unbelievably hot in Florida that time of year. Noted for next time.

Preschool for Miss Ava

Tuesday, September 2, 2014

Today's the day!

My little Ava bug started preschool this morning. She is so unbelievably excited. All last week I was asked multiple times when we were going to see Mrs. Andrews, and was told how she can't wait to meet all the girls and play with babies.

Image
She marched right into her classroom this morning, put her backpack away and gave me a quick "bye mom!". I love how she is growing more independent and is so excited to meet new friends. She has way more courage than I did at that age.

Be still my heart, little one. You are going to rock at this new adventure.

Happy 8 Months, Little Lou.

Thursday, May 1, 2014

Happy 8 months to this little ray of sunshine.

Image
Time is flying, especially with child number two.

This little nugget brings us so much joy. Her big blue eyes are so full of wonder and exploration. I often wonder what is going on in that head of hers. What is she piecing together? She is so close to rolling over. Soo close! She is a little fireball and gets frustrated easily, I'm learning. She lets out many cries of defeat when that one arm gets stuck beneath her. That darn arm!

Motherhood gives me such a great viewpoint on life, on discovery, and the process of learning something new. I really am spoiled with what I get to witness [and learn!] each and every day.

Life is so good.

Sickness All Around

Tuesday, March 25, 2014

We are experiencing a round of sickness here at the house. I am on the mend from a nasty cold that took me out for nearly a week. We discovered Ava has caught pink eye a few nights ago. Now Olivia is developing a cough. I'm hoping and praying that she didn't catch what I have. Brian is busy with school and this mama is just worn out. There is no better way to put it.

I'm tired.
I don't want to think about, let alone cook dinner.
I just want to sleep.

I am also paranoid that I will catch the nasty pink stuff. Super paranoid, really. My eyes itch just thinking about it. Ahh. But, that is part of motherhood. You are likely to give your littles your sickies, and vise versa. You are there person, after all. I love being their person.

Hoping tomorrow is a bit better than today on this front.

A New Adventure

Saturday, March 8, 2014

My life go in waves it seems. There are weeks where I am in a certain routine with my free time (editing pictures, DIY projects, baking etc.) I will be stuck on one for awhile, then hit a stump or get bored, and move onto the next. Editing pictures and blogging was my go to for the past few years. I had a lot of free time when I only had one child to care for, and a husband in the first few years of medical school.

Around July of last year I found myself in a bit of a rut. I didn't feel the joy I once had for the hobbies I cherished so much before. (Thankfully I am now getting back into it and loving the journaling and capturing moments in lives of my family. Yet, I'm now playing catch up!). At this time though, I was pregnant, and thankfully nesting kicked in.  I found myself taking on large projects, such as reupholstering an entire chair for Olivia's nursery, moving across town and all the fun that comes with that whole process. Then, Olivia was born. She was [and still is!] an angel baby, but all babies come with and extra load of work.

I seemed to remain in this rut for a few months, until a friend of mine mentioned how she was starting a annual boutique/craft show called "Backyard Boutique", and was in search of vendors. Little did anyone know how it was a dream of mine to create and sell baby wear/children accessories. I'll admit, I held off for quite a few weeks. I went back and forth, scared at the possibility of being a failure.

With Brian's full support, a lot of prayer, and a few late nights designing and figuring out a business name and product line, I signed myself up.

I chose Mae & Jane as my shop's name. Mae is Ava's middle name, and Jane is Olivia's. My girls have been my inspiration for creating baby wear in the first place, so the name just seemed to fit.

Backyard Boutique was on November 23rd, and I can't even begin to tell you how nervous I was. Hoping my things would catch someone's eye, and that all the hours I spent during nap time, and at nights would be worth it.

After 8 stressful hours, I realized that it was indeed a hit. I received so many wonderful compliments that day, and couldn't help but beam. This venture was an adrenaline rush, and one I didn't want to give up.

After the holidays came and went, and a little extra push from family and friends, I took another leap. As of January 8, 2014, Mae & Jane entered the Etsy world. Its been a scary, and thrilling two months, but it gives me the high that I have been missing.

So, this is the reason why this blog has been on such a break lately. It will be making a come back, slowly. I've got a lot of catching up to do! Luckily the blog I have for the girls to capture the little moments during our day to day has stayed pretty up to date. Phew!

A big thank you to everyone who has contributed in any way to the making and success of my little shop. It has meant the world to me!

Love you all.

A Little Pampering

Saturday, September 28, 2013

We took Ava to get her haircut today. It has been a bit straggly, so much in fact that Brian was the one who suggested we take her in. Yeah, it was time. I went online to look up kid friendly hair salons in the Lubbock area and came across one that looked promising. So, Brian and I loaded up both girls and off we went.

Cuts for Kids was by far an excellent choice. Hands down. Not only were they playing Toy Story when we walked in (Ava's face immediately lit up), but they had their chairs made out of cars. She was drawn to Lightning McQueen, a surprising choice.

Image

Ava did great during the entire haircut! She was given a sucker and had Toy Story in view, so life was good. Then, we found out that girl's cuts included nail painting, a ring, sticker, and balloon. Um, awesome! I wasn't sure how Ava would do, since she is a bit of a terror when I try and paint her nails. She surprised me once again, because she did awesome. She seemed to adore the hairdresser, and did everything she said. She picked out a pink polish, held very still when she was getting them painted, and even held her hands out and fingers apart for awhile to let them dry. Um, who taught her that? She kept looking up at me and smiling as she was sitting at the table. A little pampering does the soul good.

Such a girly girl, that one!

Outnumbered and Surviving

Thursday, September 12, 2013

Today was one of those days where I looked around my house, and felt completely overwhelmed. When did laundry start to pile up this fast? Why couldn't someone unload the dishwasher instead of putting all their dishes in the sink? The house needed vacuuming. A little dusting wouldn't hurt either. Add the responsibilities I have as a mother of two on top of that. Yes, I was a bit overwhelmed.

Although I am a person who loves a clean house and won't settle to living a life in the grunge, I have learned to let a few things go in order to be a better mom. I will put off the dusting until tonight when the girls are asleep so that I can focus on Ava and read her that favorite book. I'll do the same with the vacuuming so that I can spend a little extra time on the couch studying Liv's little features and coo at her a bit more.

My day to day lately can be defined as hectic, chaotic, and without schedule. I am still trying to get in the groove of this mother-of-two thing. I seem to conquer the needs of one child, only to find that the other one needs me for something completely different. Ava needs a snack. Olivia needs a diaper change. Ava wants you to read her a book. Olivia needs to eat. It goes on and on.

These are all very typical things that I knew my days would consist of. I love that they need me, and that I am able to stay home with them each day. I am blessed with this life. I do know that. But I can't help but feel so out of place, in survival mode. I am a juggler in a circus act. , who moves unbelievably slow from place to place due to

I look forward to the days when we have more of a schedule. And when I say schedule, I am only thinking about nap time happening for both girls. At the same time.

Because this mama needs some rest.

Things To Remember

Tuesday, September 10, 2013

The past few days have been a whirlwind for me. I remember them begin that way when Ava's first arrived home, but not nearly as crazy as with Olivia. I guess thats what happens when you throw a toddler in the mix of having a new babe. I've been jotting down the little bits and pieces of my days, hoping to not forget the small, yet important details .

To give a glimpse as to what my days have looked like lately, here are some of the moments I've jotted down:

- Ava always comes up to Olivia and always wants to give her tickles

- Today, (9/7/13) Ava fed Olivia a bottle. It was one of those moments where time stood still for me. Ava was mesmerized as she watched her baby sister suck on the bottle that she wa giving her. She kept asking "all done?" and looking at me with worried eyes. I reassured her that she was doing so good and that Olivia was still hungry. She then moved her eyes back to Olivia and continued to study her every movement. When it was time to burp her, she gladly took on that responsibility as well, moving my hand away and gently patting her back. What a little momma!

- When Ava hears Olivia stirring in her crib, she runs into her room a fast as she can and climbs up on the crib to get a better view of her new little sis. I love to listen to what she says to her. Sometimes she consoles her: "It's okay, baby". Other times she greets her with a warm hello, "hi, baby!". It is the cutest thing. She really has taken to her quite well.

- Olivia loves to kick her legs. Whenever she is fussy, but you know she has a clean diaper and full belly, rubbing we feet will usually do the trick.

- Olivia has a very distinct shriek that she uses to get someones attention. I'm in for it in a couple of months when she realizes this.

- Livvy loves to try and suck her fingers. I am battling with her on this one. I'll try and subsitute the binki for the fingers.

- When trying to burp Livvy on your lap, she always ends up tilting her head to the side so it's lying in the palm of your hand. She always falls asleep curled up like this.

- Every once and awhile you will catch her grinning in her sleep.

We are feeling so blessed to have each one of our days filled with moments like these. I just can't imagine life getting much better than this!

Welcome, Little One

Image

Life with this sweet girl is absolute heaven. My momma has been here helping out with Ava, which has been a life saver. Somehow Ava knows her momma can't chase after her these days, and takes full advantage of that. Luckily Grammy is pretty quick, ha! Brian was able to get time off of school this week, which has been so nice. I don't know what I am going to do when the house gets quiet and its just me and the two girls. Maybe then it will hit me that I am now outnumbered.

I just have to remind myself that life will eventually get back on a schedule. Ava will get back to sleeping on her own and taking naps (she will, right?!) Until then, we live in a circus where we are trying to find our way through each day. Luckily Olivia is a good baby.

Eat, Sleep, Poop, Repeat.

Coming Home

We are home and doing well!

So thankful to have Olivia home safe and sound, and to sleep in my own bed again. I also love seeing such a tiny body in that big crib. You forget how little they are!
Image
Life with two at home will be a little crazy, I can already tell. Ava has already been testing the waters, seeing what she can get away with. Luckily my mom is here for a week, then Brian's mom comes the day after to help pull in the reins.

Thank heaven for Grandmas!

Olivia Jane: A Birth Story

Monday, September 2, 2013

Image
Here I am. It is 4:30 in the morning, and I am unable to get the slightest bit of shut eye. Husband is lying next to me in this queen-sized hospital bed (so nice!), and my newest little babe is asleep in the bassinet near it's foot. I think I still have waves of adrenalin coursing though my veins, considering what my body just went through. Seriously, what a night. And how vastly different this labor and delivery was compared to Ava's. Here is a glimpse of how it went down, and a [not so] brief story of how our sweet Livvy joined our family.

Our first baby surprised us by coming a day shy of 37 weeks. So naturally, I thought my second would come even faster. I was well prepared to feel contractions, head to the hospital and have our new addition in the middle of August. Bags were packed, the nursery was complete and arrangements were already made for where Ava would go while mom and dad were at the hospital. We were much more prepared this go around then we were with Ava.

My 37th week of pregnancy with Olivia came and went, and day by day I realized how wrong I was about her early arrival. I really didn't have control over anything. I'll admit, it was a hard lesson to learn. A lot of my friends kept asking how I was doing, and politely reminding me that I wasn't even at my due date yet. Yes, I knew that. I shouldn't have had my hopes up so high.  I know. Lesson learned.

Truth be told, I started avoiding people. I didn't want to have that same conversation as to how I was still pregnant over and over with everyone I saw. That is exactly why Mom and I bolted out of church early today after Sacrament Meeting. Don't judge

The two of us went home and had ourselves a lazy day, much like the days before.  Mom checked email, I ate lunch and painted my nails (again). Then when hubs and Ava came home, everyone (but me--why am I still awake?!) took naps.

An hour or two later, I heard Brian's phone alarm go off, reminding him of the Stake Priesthood Meeting he had to attend that night. He left the house by 6:45ish, and not ten minutes later the little pains in my lower abdomen began. I was skeptical that this could actually be labor, which I had been wanting for so so long. So, I kept the little secret to myself. After seeing the consistency and duration of these little pains (about 7 minutes apart and lasting an average of 30 seconds), I opted to tell my mom. We decided to go on a walk to see what that would do. Off to the neighboring elementary school we went. Ava played on the playground while I walked and walked. Sure enough, the contractions kept coming, lasted a little longer and were getting a bit stronger each time, which lead me to send this picture and text to Brian:
Image
ImageImage
He stayed for the entire meeting. By the time he got home, had changed his clothes and was ready to go, I had had my first "knee dropping" contraction. Yeah, it was time to go. We loaded up the car, said goodbye to Grammy and Ava, then off we went. We texted our friend/photographer, Mariah (so glad I decided to do birth photography!) to let her know what was going on and that we would keep her updated.

We arrived at the hospital around 9:40, and that is where the contractions got painful and pressure seemed to come out of nowhere. My breath was taken away and my vision became blurred due to the pain. It was then and there that I knew Olivia was right there. My girl was so close to being in my arms. It felt like I was in that waiting room for ages. Brian claims it was only 5 minutes, but I'd beg to differ. It felt more like 15.
Image
They finally wheeled me back to a room, where I was once again on my hands and knees. I lost some blood, which scared me a bit, but not nearly as bad as hearing the nurse say I was dilated to a nine and was unable to get an epidural. Seriously, my worst nightmare. I begged for some type of numbing medicine, cream, shot, WHATEVER! (high fives all around to you women who do it naturally by choice). It took them nearly 15 minutes to decide (with the help of my husband, mind you), prep and administer a pudendal neural block, which only helped minimally with the pain.
Image
Image
My doctor arrived shortly after that was given (she was driving from clear across town), which is when Olivia was crowning.  I pushed anywhere from 5-10 minutes, and our Olivia was born. She arrived at 10:13pm, weighing 8 pounds, 8 ounces (just like her momma!), and being 20.5 inches in length.
Image
ImageImage
Image
We were in the hospital for a grand total of 33 minutes when our little girl was born. Talk about a whirlwind. I have been shaking ever since, in awe that I just delivered a child naturally and in such a short amount of time. Our bodies truly are amazing.

Although Olivia didn't come as soon as Ava did, it is true that labor with your second child is much [much] faster. Can you imagine what it will be like with our third? Yikes.

I am loving getting to know this little one. I can tell already that she is a good baby. She was so alert after she was born, barely crying. Her eyes were wide open and alert. She was studying me, as I was studying her. Possibly my favorite part after labor is seeing my little ones turn their heads to the sound of my voice. Both Ava and Olivia did this. It really does something to me when I see this. It is as though they know I am their momma, and that they find comfort in knowing I'm there.
Image
Image
Oh how we love our Livvy! She looks a lot like her big sister when we is sleeping, but when she is awake I think she has her own look. I can't even express how grateful, blessed and excited I am to have two girls. They will meet for the first time tomorrow, and I simply can't wait. I'm sure Ava will be overjoyed to meet and hold a new baby. The years ahead of us will be good ones. To watch these two grow and interact together will be the highlight of my days.

Brian and I are so blessed.

Welcome to the world, Olivia Jane!
