Arches National Park

Image

I feel like this post is kinda all over the place but here is is anyways:) For my Spring break I was able to go with some friends on a trip to Arches National park in Moab Utah.  On our drive down we stopped for breakfast in Price. We found this really cute little restaurant called Farlaino's, the food was so yummy.  We left pretty early in the morning so that we could have time to set up camp and start hiking. We got to Moab around noon.  We found a really cute little camp spot right by the Colorado river.

Image
It was really windy the first day that we were there, as you can see from our tent. It was hard to fall asleep with the tent laying on top of us and flapping in the wind, but we survived. The second night was as calm as could be which was great!

The girls that I went with, we are all in the same ward.
Pam, Me, Leonee, Melissa

Image The first day we got there we decided to hike to Delicate Arch, the one that is on the Utah license plate. It was about a 3 mile hike round trip.  It was so beautiful and fun to see the arches in person, they are so big! This was one of my favorite hikes, by the time we finished it was almost dark so we headed to camp for the night.

The next day we decided to just drive and see where it took us.  It was the first time for all of us to be at Arches National Park. It was fun driving around the park, all of the rocks looked like something.  This on was called balanced rock. As you will notice we had fun taking lots of jumping pictures and planking pictures. For those of you who have no idea what planking is, here is the definition: Planking (or the Lying Down Game) is an activity consisting of lying face down in an unusual or incongruous location. Both hands must touch the sides of the body and having a photograph of the participant taken and posted on the Internet is an integral part of the game.  Players compete to find the most unusual and original location in which to play.

The above picture was my favorite view on our hike to see the double O arch.  The picture does not do it justice. All the rock fins look so cool. It makes you feel like you are on top of the world

This is the double O arch from the back side. the picture below if you look closely you can see Pam and I standing in the bottom O.

This the one of the arches on the way to the double O arch. This the the longest known arch in the world. It is it the length of a football field.

Breakfast was interesting on the first morning with all the wind, we had bread and eggs flying everywhere, so we decided if we wanted to enjoy the meal we should eat in the car!

On the last day were were there we heard about an arch outside of the park where people swing from it. So we decided to go check it out. We got lucky that when we got there, there was someone getting ready to swing from it. Pam and I hiked up right to the arch so we could watch it up close. It was so crazy, I can't imagine the rush that must be to jump off an arch. We talked to the guy afterwards and it was actually a group of students from BYU.  They told us how they set it up and made it as safe as possible. You definitely have to know what you are doing.

As you can see from the picture above that this hike involved walking on rock fins, which means on either side of you is a drop off. Melissa is afraid of heights and had a hard time crossing but was able to do it!

This trip as a lot of fun. I have never seen so many arches before. It was fun to be out in nature just hiking and spending time with friends. I have gotten to know these girls just over the past 3 months so it was fun that we are already good friends and doing things together.

One eventful month!

Just a warning this is a long post with details about how I got my job mostly so I remember, so if you want to read all of it you can, just know its long!:)

2012 has already treated me really well! To start at the beginning, after having a awesome Christmas break back home in AZ (except for the part when about 20 people at my house took turns getting sick...like really sick, it was an interesting last week home:) I headed back up to Utah since I had a long term (6 weeks) subbing job that started on January 3rd.   To give some background on how I even got that job, it was for a teacher who was on maternity leave. Since she was going to be gone for more than three weeks she had to have a sub who was in Family and Consumer Sciences.  When I first saw the email she sent out that my cooperating teacher I student taught for showed me I quickly replied and said I was interested. I was especially hopeful that I would get it since I had just graduated college and now need a job, and since it is the middle of the school year I figured I would have to sub for awhile before any jobs became available.! She never responded so I emailed her again and she was still looking and said that there were no FCS subs in the Granite district so they would have to get me all set up to sub for her.  I had tried to get in the sub system for the district but they weren't hiring subs, so luckily since she really needed me I got the in!  I was so thankful for that.
So I started the subbing job at Hunter Jr. High. The next day after I started the subbing job I get a call from a principal who left me a voicemail saying there was a FCS/CTE full time position opening up the next week at Valley Jr. high if I was interested. I had no idea where the school was but knew it was in the same district. So I immediately called the principal back but he was gone for the day so I left him a message saying I was definitely interested, however I was subbing till February 10th, but that if we could work something out that would be great! With that said I didn't hear back from him for a few days so I figured he heard that and just moved on to find someone else.  Then a week later he called me back and left me another voicemail (he always called while I was teaching!). So after school I hurried and called him back, he told me he talked to some people at the district and the principal I was currently subbing for and they gave the ok for him to interview me.  After he told me that he said, " so that is if you are still interested, would you like to interview with us?"  Of course I was thrilled and agreed to interview.  We set up the interview for a few days later when I didn't have school.
On Friday the 13th at 8 in the morning I made my way to the school. I got there like 20 minutes early so I waited in my car and tried to think of answers to all these questions they were going to ask me.  I had never done an interview like this so I was extremely nervous and had no idea what to expect. The interview was set for 8:30 so at about 8:20 I headed in.  When I got there I met the principal and he handed me a paper with about 5 questions on it, and told me to review those and he would gather everyone.  As I read through the questions, about half of them I had no idea how to answer them, they had all these acronyms I had never heard of.  So a few minutes before 8:30 the interview started. There was me and 4 other people in the interview, the principal, another FACS teacher, the vice principal and a counselor. They each took a turn asking me the questions from the paper, and on about 2 of them I had to tell them I didn't know, I am so new to teaching I haven't had experience with that program but I tried to give experiences of similar things I had done with students. Then they asked me if I had any questions, so I asked a few and then that was it! They said they would let me know either way. I walked to my car to call my mom and the time was only 8:36. I have never had such a short interview, I wasn't sure if that was a good or bad thing.
The next few days I waited in anticipation for a call. By Tuesday I figured I would hear from them but each day keep passing and nothing. Finally on Friday, a week after the interview, later in the afternoon I got a call from the principal offering me a job and asking if I was still interested. Of course I was so I accepted the offer.  He then called HR so they could get the ball rolling for me to get everything figured out. They wanted me to sign my contract on Monday and then start Tuesday.  Since I was subbing still he said they would find someone else to replace me there.  Everything happened so fast! The thing that amazes me is I never even applied for a job, they called me! That part was nice:)  After I heard the news I called the teacher I was subbing for to see if she knew anything, and she didn't so I filled her it, she was really excited that I had found a job.  I told her I would do the sub plans for the next week, since I was kinda leaving her unexpectedly.
That Monday was a crazy day, I finished up my last day teaching, told the teachers I knew that surprise it was my last day.  I never told them I interviewed because I didn't know if anything would come of it. I had to finish up all the sub plans, call the new sub to fill her in, get the district building before it closed, sign my contract and get all sorts of paperwork, and benefits packet to go over! Then the next day I started and went in not having any idea what to expect.  The principal told me they were basically going to just "throw me into the fire", haha GREAT! It really was fine though, it has all worked out. As each of my classes came in they just thought I was another sub! Nope! I am the real deal.  Most of the seemed pretty excited since they have had a sub for awhile now. I still don't know tons about the teacher before me but apparently she quit. So for the first few days I did some get to know you things, got seating charts set up etc.  They finally got my computer log-in all set up and my gradebook is running so I can take attendance and start putting in grades.
Then today I went to a training so I can get a purchase card and start getting food for my cooking classes.  I teach three 7th grade CTE-intro classes and three 8th grade FACS exploration classes, so we learn about a variety of things in both classes, child care, child development, interior design, cooking, families, careers, sewing, nutrition, communication, etc. Right now I am trying to figure out what order to do everything in and getting lesson plans ready.  I really like the school so far.  All the teachers, custodians, secretaries, and the librarian have been so good to me and everyone seems really excited to have me there which is nice.  Today I went the teacher lounge for the first time for lunch and it was hoot. The teachers in there were so funny and a few who were close to my age, although I think I am the youngest teacher there. Anyways it is fun getting to know the other teachers.  My students are pretty good too:) There are always those few, but overall they are enjoyable to have in class.
Wow I feel like I just typed a novel, but man this past week has been eventful! I feel so blessed to have only been graduated for a month and I already found a job in my field and in the middle of the school year! I guess I will be in Utah for awhile, which is fine. I like it here!

Dusting off!

I decided to visit my blog today and dust it off:) I noticed that my last post was about 8 months about, but my last real blog post was about a year ago. This has been a very eventful year for me. This winter was my last semester at BYU-Idaho. Since I had to do my student teaching in a different state I chose to walk in April so that I didn't have to go to Rexburg in December just to walk for graduation. All of my siblings and most of their families were able to make it to my graduation. It was awesome and a fun time.

Image
Immediately after graduating I started my internship two days later in Chandler AZ. Shirley and her family were kind enough to find me this internship and let me live with them for the 7 weeks. I was able to help at a Preschool and do some teaching there for my internship. For the last few weeks of my internship I was able to get a car since I would be needing it for my student teaching in Utah. It is a 2001 Honda Civic.

ImageAfter completing my internship I went home to Snowflake to work at Catalyst paper for my summer job. I worked in Mill materials which is basically a huge warehouse with tons of parts for the paper mill. I did inventory all summer, I have some really good counting skills:) I worked there all summer till I had to leave to move to Utah in August.

My student teaching started on August 15th and the first day of school was August 22nd. I could write a whole novel on student teaching. It was a big learning experience, and a lot of work. Overall though it was enjoyable and a good experience. I taught 7th, 8th, and 9th graders at Brockbank Jr. High in Magna Utah. I taught three CTE classes (Career Technical Education), two 8th grade FACS exploration classes and two 9th grade Food & Nutrition I classes. From those classes I taught about careers, family, sewing, cooking, nutrition, interior design, child development and more. After completing my student teaching in November I started looking for a job. My plan was to get on the subbing list for surrounding school districts. It turned out to be harder than I planned. None of the school districts were hiring substitutes, so why does everyone say they are always needing subs?? Who knows. So I began looking for any job possible. I had a few interviews but nothing came from them.
The last few weeks of my student teaching my cooperating teacher received an email of a teacher going on maternity leave and wanted names of any good FACS long term subs. So I emailed her and told her I was interested. I didn't hear from her for about 2 or 3 weeks so I emailed her again and told her I was still interested if she was still looking. She emailed me back and said she was still looking and asked if I was comfortable with the classes she taught. Of course I was because they are basically the same classes I just taught while student teaching. So turns out since she is going to be gone for more than 3 weeks she has to have a sub that has a Family Consumer Science degree, and there are no FACS subs in granite school district, so she had to take me:) It all worked out because it got me on the list that was impossible to get on and I got a job! So at the beginning of January I will be starting that long term subbing job teaching what I graduated in, so that is exciting. I am glad to be able to stay in Utah for now. Scott and his family are kind enough to be letting me live with them. The school is located not far from their home which is nice. I am enjoying Utah and like my YSA ward I am in. December 17th was my official graduation date, so I am officially graduated now and am waiting for my diploma to come it the mail so I can start applying for my teaching license.

For now I am home for the Holidays and am trying to enjoy this vacation before I start work in January.

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2011

For New Years this year we had our own little party at our house. We some played games, and ate yummy snacks. About 10 minutes before midnight we decided to go to the ball drop they were have at the park by our house. Sadly, when we got there, not a single person was there. We assumed they canceled it since it was -5 outside! We hurried back home just in time to set off some fireworks at midnight! Kevin and Merica got them, they also got sparklers which were really fun.

ImageThis is my attempt to write 2011 with my sparkler, didn't quite work.
