our story

From a soup kitchen to serving Metro Atlanta’s large homeless population

1938

Atlanta Union Mission is established as a soup kitchen to feed men displaced by The Great Depression.

1947

Atlanta Union Mission gains 501(c)(3) status and is inducted as a non-profit organization.

1967

Atlanta Union Mission expands its services to offer recovery services to men facing homelessness. The Potter’s House opens offering long-term residential recovery programs for men experiencing homelessness due to addiction.

1969

Atlanta Union Mission opens a facility on Ponce de Leon, becoming the first entity in the United States to offer services to women facing homelessness.

1982

Atlanta Union Mission’s Women’s Services facility moves to its current Howell Mill Road location. Originally named Dorcas’ House, it was renamed My Sister’s House.

1996

Fuqua Hall is given to Atlanta Union Mission as a transitional housing facility for men experiencing homelessness.

2003

My Sister’s House expands its facilities, providing emergency services and long-term residential recovery care to 264 women (with and without children) each day.

2008

The Shepherd’s Inn expands to serve 1,000 meals and provide shelter to 450 men every day.

2010

Atlanta Union Mission changes its name to “Atlanta Mission.”

2013

Atlanta Mission acquires The Atlanta Day Shelter for Women and Children.

Atlanta Mission Transformation Model

2014

Through nationwide best practice research, Atlanta Mission develops the Transformation Model to End Homelessness.

The Atlanta Day Shelter for Women and Children adds Choose Help services to meet unique needs of women experiencing homelessness through friendship and hope.

Make Progress services are launched for women and children to better serve each individual and help end their homelessness.

Men’s Services launches Choose Help and Make Progress services.

Atlanta Mission celebrates 80 years of ending homelessness.

Next Steps

2019

Atlanta Mission partners with Cara to launch a workforce development program, Atlanta Mission Next Steps.

Atlanta Mission staff celebrates groundbreaking of Restoration House

2020

Construction is underway for Restoration House, our new, innovative low barrior-shelter for women and their children. We celebrated the groundbreaking in June of 2020.
