Nellie's 5th Birthday

When we were in the thick of full lockdown life, Nellie kept asking, "when it's my birthday, will I be able to see my friends and touch people??" All those months ago, I assured her that she's definitely be able to see her friends and touch people by the time AUGUST rolled around. Oh, how naive we were back them!
Although we still had so many limitations, she managed to have a fun, happy day. Aunt Katie even stopped by the night before her birthday to give last-day-of-being-four snuggles.
Image
Nellie recruited Aubree to make her cake (I am not complaining that Aubree has taken over that role!) and she was extra happy that Aubree let her help make the cake.
Image
On her birthday morning, Nellie hopped out of bed over-eager to open her presents.
 Image
She got new leggings and shirts and wanted to put them on immediately.
Image
She also got a couple barbies (something we've managed to avoid for 15 parenting years so far, but many months prior to my birthday she saw my 1997 graduation barbie tucked away in an old box and asked, "please, please can I have that for my birthday??" It seems I can't tell that cute face "no."), and a new sleeping bag for camping.
Image
Not to mention her birthday CD! Nellie is Mark's music side-kick. She loves to watch music videos and has strong opinions about what music she likes and doesn't like.
Image
We made a quick run to grab birthday doughnuts after/for breakfast.
Image
Everyone's happy with birthday doughnuts!
Image
To celebrate her birthday, Nellie told me she wanted to play at a playground. That's not something we've done much since Covid, but we thought hard and figured out a playground in a nearby small town where we figured there wouldn't be many other kids. Success!
Image
On our way home, we stopped to visit Venna, and in true generous Venna fashion, she had a bag full of fun gifts for Nellie.
Image
Back at home, Nellie got to help Aubree and Lily finish decorating her birthday cake.
Image
And after her birthday dinner, she was excited to clap out her candles (blowing out candles is a Covid casualty). She said she had a really happy 5th birthday.
Image
Nellie is so much fun! She is always up for an adventure (unless it's hiking), loves friends, is excited to learn, looks for every opportunity to play with babies and toddlers, is responsible, and has been the perfect caboose for our family.

Thane's 10th Birthday

When Thane's birthday rolled around towards the end of May, Washington was still pretty locked down (let's be honest - we're still pretty locked down). Ten is supposed to be a friend birthday party year, but that wasn't really possible this year. So, though our celebratory options were somewhat limited, we made the best of it.
The Sunday before his birthday we had a family party with Katie and her kids.
Image
Food plays a big roll in any celebration or event where Thane has any say. He was extra excited to have control over the dinner menu for his birthday week.
Image
On his actual birthday, Mark was still working for home, so Thane had the benefit of being able to open his gifts first thing in the morning. He got Legos, fabric markers, plain shirts to decorate, and perler bead supplies.
Image
He also got the standard, and highly anticipated, birthday CD mix from Mark.
Image
After getting dressed, I told him to get in the car and took him to a surprise breakfast with Tallie and Venna. They decorated their Sprinter van and made a full spread of food for him. They're are so incredibly thoughtful and definitely know how to win Thane over!
Image
For his birthday, Thane REALLY wanted to plant pumpkins. That may seem like a strange birthday wish, but we have friends who were planting an enormous, full-acre garden and they invited us to come help them.
Image
So, we spent Thane's birthday afternoon digging in the dirt and planting dozens up pumpkins.
Image
He's a super hard worker!
Aubree and ZZ went on a long run, then joined in the messy fun. Bryce worked right along with Thane.
Image
Everyone took planting breaks to visit the pigs and alpacas and other fun farm animals.
Image
Thane ended the day inviting Venna and her family over for pizza, cake, and ice cream.
Image
Thane asked Aubree to make him a Monopoly cake and she did not disappoint. It took her many, many hours and more butter than I'd care to consider.
Image
Thane was super happy with the final product. I think he had a pretty awesome day.
Image
Thane is tenacious, incredibly hard-working, quick, generous, kind-hearted, stubborn, and unique. He loves food, games, being creative, friends, jump rope, soccer, running, and orienteering. He definitely adds spice and wonder to our lives!

Interview with Thane:

Bryce Turns 12

Unfortunately, Bryce's 12th birthday fell when we were still in full lock-down mode. He handled the limitations with incredible grace and understanding (and six months later we still owe him doughnuts and dinner out with the family).
Image
Since Mark was working from home, he did have the benefit of getting to open his gifts in the morning instead of having to wait until Mark got home from work.
Image
Bryce got a new soccer ball, a weighted blanket, a Tesla shirt, Legos from Thane, a model Tesla, and his yearly personalized CD.
Image
Mark also took Bryce and Thane on a bike ride, then Bryce got to be the boss at home for the day. He and Aubree decided how he wanted his cake decorated.
Image
It ended up being a HUGE cake; way too much for our family and no one with whom to share it. Stinkin' Covid. We definitely missed celebrating with friends and/or family.
Image
Actually, Tallie and Venna did stop by bringing birthday wishes and a thoughtful gift. It was definitely a bright spot in the day!
Image
Bryce ended his day with choosing the movie for family movie night.
Image
Bryce had a hard 11th year (anxiety is a beast), but he is one of the most tender-hearted, loyal, thoughtful, genuine kids you'll ever meet. Everyone loves Bryce, and he gets along with everybody.
Image
He's obsessed with Teslas, loves all things technology-related, and enjoys ballroom dance, bike riding, and soccer. Currently he thinks he'd like to work for Tesla or Boston Dynamics when he's an adult.
Image
Pretty much, he's a star!

Interview with Bryce:
Favorite Color?: "Green."
Favorite Candy?:  "Milky Ways, Gummy Bears, Hershey's, M&M's, and Dots. I think that's all."
What do you want to be when you grow up?: "I want to either work at Tesla or Boston Dynamics.”
Where do you want to go on your mission?: "I would like to go to Texas because it's awesome there. Maybe Florida. Somewhere hot and awesome. Even though I hate the heat."
Favorite Church Song?: "'Armies of Helaman'."
Favorite Animal?: "Wombat."
Favorite Movie?: "'Peter Rabbit.'"
Favorite Thing to Do?: "Ride in Teslas."
Favorite Food?: "Homemade Hamburger Helper."
Best Friends?: "Jordan and Evan."
Favorite Book?: "'The War That Saved My Life.'"
Favorite Toy?: "Soccer ball and putty."
What makes you happy?: "Teslas."
Favorite thing to do with Mom?: "Go out to eat."
Favorite thing to do with Dad?: "Go on bike rides."
What do you do really well?: "Build and design things."
What makes you laugh?: "Watching old videos of Nellie."
Favorite Holiday?: "Christmas."
Favorite Sport?: "Orienteering and soccer and ballroom dance."
What’s the best time of day?: "3 pm, because it's snack time and most of our work is usually done by then."
What's your favorite day of the week?: "Friday and Saturday, because I don't have to do very much school work and we can go outside."
What are you afraid of?: "Large snakes. And small ones too! And tornadoes."
What do you like to do with your family?: "Play family board games."
What do you love to learn about?: "Teslas. I really like learning new dances at ballroom."
What is your favorite class/subject?: “Art.”
Where do you like to go?: "To friend's houses.”
If you had one wish, what would it be?: "To live next door to the Dance's and have 10-15 models of each Tesla."

What's your favorite Super Hero?: "Flash or Green Arrow."

Defy

This post is not nearly as inflammatory as the title may suggest.
Last fall, we decided to buy homeschool passes to Defy - a semi-nearby trampoline park (formerly, and still occasionally known as Flying Circus). The homeschool passes allow unlimited access Mondays-Fridays from 10am-3pm. A bunch of our homeschool friends also bought passes, which definitely added to the allure.
 Image
Mostly, we ended up going on Friday afternoons because of HuCo and other commitments Monday-Thursday.
Image
The kids loved going, jumping, and seeing their friends.
Image
I always felt just a little nervous, because I'm well aware of the inherent risks of jumping on trampolines. I figured time would tell whether the passes meant I was a really fun mom, or a really dumb one. When the Coronavirus shutdowns came, we obviously couldn't visit Defy anymore, so I'd say the overall lack of broken bones means, "fun mom."
Image
By February, Bryce commented, "When we first came here, it seemed huge, like we could never explore it all, but every time we come, it seems a little smaller." Ha! He was always still happy to go if it meant he got to see Jordan, though.
Image
I don't know that I'd get passes again anytime soon (mostly because it's a bit of a long drive), but we had a lot of fun.

2020 Covid Chore Challenge

Normally, we do Summer Chore Challenge when school gets out. Nothing is normal these days, so, effective immediately, we are starting Covid Chore Challenge. As a result of our big road trip last year, we didn't do a 2019 Summer Chore Challenge, so my kids have been pestering me to get going on this year's lists and tracking poster. They chose the poster's orienteering theme, but any map making mistakes are completely my fault.
Image
Covid Chore Challenge is pretty much the same as regular summer chore challenge, but starting earlier and with the potential to dove-tail into a regular chore challenge in a couple months. If you're not familiar with regular chore challenge, I've written more detailed blog post about them in the past, so click HERE, HERE, or HERE.
As a quick summary, the idea of chore challenge is to focus on training. Each kid has a list of 15 individualized chores and tasks to learn/accomplish. It takes a while to complete any task, but once a task is finished, they move up a step on the tracking chart. They get a small prize when they finish 3 tasks (along the lines of a Dairy Queen Blizzard), a bigger prize after finishing 7 tasks (something around $7-$10), and a grand prize when they finish 10 tasks (something around $25). If everyone reaches the grand prize, then we get a big family party.
Image
Since everything this summer has been cancelled and the months will be 2,345 days long, part one of the chore challenge will last from May 1-June 30. Anyone who has reached the grand prize level of part one will have the opportunity to participate in part two (which will run July 1-August 31). That level will carry over unfinished tasks/chores from part 1, plus 10 or more new tasks/chores. The kids are really excited about the potential for double to prizes.
Image
I think they'll all be successful. They're super excited about getting started and are all fully invested. Except perhaps Nellie. This is her first chore challenge and she seems to think she should get a prize for every little thing she does. Whoops!
So, here are their lists for part one...
Aubree (age 14) (Note - I had a hard time coming up with tasks for Aubree, because she's been super self-motivated during this lockdown. She has some weak areas we're addressing coughcleaningcough, but otherwise, I decided to go ahead and reward her for some of the great things she's already been working on).

40th Birthday CRUISE

I've avoided writing this post because there's just SO MUCH to say! It's overwhelming. But Aubree is sitting behind me chanting, "Write a blog, write a blog!," so I guess I'll get started.
A little background first... A few years ago, a quick trip down to Southern California turned into an impromptu Sister's Trip. We had SUCH a good time together, that we started brainstorming ways to make get-togethers a more regular occurrence. We settled on the idea of having 40th birthday trips. Basically, the birthday girl gets to plan a trip and sisters, moms, aunts, cousins (whoever!) can join in on the fun.
As the oldest sister, my trip was up first. I tried to think of something that was convenient, reasonably priced, and required minimal planning on my part. I settled on a 5-day cruise out of Long Beach. Even better, we manage to schedule our cruise the week of my birthday in November. Even even better, we had our cruise long before Covid-19 turned cruising into a nightmare.
Katie and I flew out of Seattle early Saturday morning. It still blows my mind how easy it is to travel without kids! When we arrived in LA, we met up with my Aunt Amanda who had flown in from Texas at the same time (note - though she is my aunt, Amanda is 4 years younger than me and has kids the same age as my kids). What a joyous reunion! The laughter started immediately. Amanda commented, "I want ALL the minutes" (meaning she didn't want to miss any of our time together), and "All the minutes" quickly became the theme of the week.
Image
Another Aunt, Emily, picked us up at the Van Nuys flyaway and treated us to lunch at In-N-Out. That marked our official return to California. We went back to Emily's home and the day kept getting better and better as more sisters and family arrived in waves. We soon realized our laughing muscles were out of shape. They got a lot of exercise over the next week.
Image
Once everyone arrived, we moved over to my Uncle Rick's home for a special dinner.
Image
Rick made fried rice on his outdoor grill. That sentence sounds bland, but I assure you, he put on a show worthy of any entertainment restaurant, and the food was phenomenal!
Image
My 40th birthday coincides with my baby sister Lauren's 30th birthday, so we finished off the evening with cake and singing for her.
Image
Sunday morning we were able to attend church with my Grammy Bunker.
Image
She was so excited to have all of us with her in her ward, and we were equally thrilled to be there with her. We dramatically increased the regular attendance in her Relief Society meeting, and since the majority of us are definitely NOT quiet or reserved, we might have talked and participated in the discussion a lot.
Image
After church, we had just enough time to change clothes and grab a little lunch before heading out to the cruise. Only a couple of us had been on a cruise before, so there was a lot of anticipation and excitement. Impressively, the check-in process was super easy and quick.
Image
And just like that, our cruise adventures officially began! First things first - lunch!
Image
There were ten of us split in three rooms. I had the privilege of bunking with Sue and Colleen. They were great roommates!
Image
After eating and getting settled in our rooms, we spent some time exploring the ship and just enjoying being together.
Image
We spent Monday at Catalina Island. It's not the most exciting of destinations, but the weather was beautiful and we enjoyed walking around the main thoroughfare. We wanted to rent a golf cart to further explore the island, but they were all sold out by the time we were ready to rent one. Boo!
Image
Some members of our group also got a bit of shopping in (not me, in case you're wondering). Kira let me borrow her hat because my Washington eyes weren't used to all the sun!
Image
Back on the ship we quickly gained a reputation for being loud, fun, and a little obnoxious. We thought we were extra funny because we were probably the only group on the "booze cruise" that wasn't drunk, but you couldn't really tell from our behavior. Every time we left our rooms, while we waited for stragglers, we would make a tunnel for any of the passengers or crew who happened to walk by. Our rooms were situated in an area where a lot of crew passed by, so they were the main targets of our cheers and victory tunnel. When the crew members would see our group in other parts of the ship, they'd always raise their own hands up and cheer. I think we could all probably use more victory tunnels and daily cheers, right?
Image
In the main dining room, we were a big enough group that we got our own table. We loved getting to try out the different appetizers, entrees, and desserts, and would regularly share with each other to sample a wider variety. I thought the food on this Carnival cruise wasn't quite as good as on our Celebrity cruise, with the fish tacos as the biggest exception to that statement. Those fish tacos were incredible! However, the dining room entertainment was better on this ship. Most nights the waiters would put on a little show that ended with a huge dance party. Fun!
Image
Speaking of dancing, when we had down time on the ship, we often sought out the dance classes. A few members of our group are excellent dancers, but the rest of us were just along for the experience.
Image
The main dance/singing/entertainment group on board soon knew our group because of our attendance at the dance classes. We mostly became buddies with Frank. We got special shout-outs from them at some of the nighttime shows.
Image
On Tuesday we arrived in Ensenada, Mexico. Even though I grew up in California, that was my first time in Mexico.
Image
It's not easy keeping ten people together, but we did our best...until we gave up and split into smaller groups. Ensenada was an interesting place to visit. It's a good place to go if you like vendors yelling at you and constantly trying to get you to buy their stuff/go to their restaurant/drink their margaritas. Mostly we wandered the shopping area looking for souvenirs and take-home gifts, but part of our group also got massages.
During part of our explorations, Kira, Lauren, and I passed a bar with a sign that said, "Mormons drink free." Ha! We thought it warranted a picture.
Image
Back on board we were spoiled by our aunts. Aunt Sue brought a birthday cake on board for me (we ate it earlier in the week), plus noise makers and party hats. Yeah, we looked plenty ridiculous.
 Image
Aunt Emily made gift bags for each of us full of goodies like socks and facial masks.
Image
Emily and Sue conspired to decorate my cabin. There were streamers everywhere and the walls, mirrors, and even the ceiling was covered with print outs of birthday memes. They were hilarious. We were all laughing so hard we couldn't talk.
 Image
Wednesday was an at-sea day as the ship ever-so-slowly made it's way back to LA. I am 100% sure I'm not accurately keeping track of what activities we did on which day, but we managed to keep ourselves happily occupied all of the time. Kira was excited to get the best score on a mini-golf competition.
Image
Katie and Amanda were our most outgoing group members. They plotted their way onto the stage one night for a men vs. women game show.
Image
More impressively, they weren't even embarrassed by the wild things they were asked to do. With their help, the women's team won, breaking an 8 week men's team winning streak. They came home with silly trophies for their efforts.
Image
On the last night on board, we went to the finale dance show and afterwards tried to perform a small part of a routine we'd been practicing along with the dance team.
Image
We did a fairly terrible job, but boy was it fun!
It was sad to leave the cruise and say good-bye to all the family on Thursday morning. I couldn't have possibly had a better time. So much laughter, so many memories, ALL THE MINUTES!
And major props to Mark for handling the home front! I didn't have cell service for most of the time I was gone, so he was really flying solo. A bunch of really wonderful friends stepped up and pitched in so Mark could still go to work a few days. I am overwhelmingly grateful for everyone's sacrifices and efforts on my behalf. It was the best birthday ever! Hurrah for 40!
Can't wait for the next sister to turn 40...
