NINETY SIX, S.C. – USC Upstate senior golfer Hunter Fry (Dacula, Ga.) won the Big South Championship on Tuesday afternoon at The Patriot at Grand Harbor Country Club.
Fry becomes the first male golfer in the Division I era to win a Conference Championship and he is the first Upstate golfer since Baxter Culler won the Peach Belt Championship in 2007. With the win Fry automatically qualifies for the NCAA Tournament and becomes the first player since Jordan Warnock to advance to the regional stage. This is also the first time in program history that USC Upstate holds the individual championships for both the men's and women's tournaments at the same time.
Fry started out the day shooting even through the first seven holes, then on hole eight the Peach State native sank an eagle put to move to two-under on the day. On the back nine, Fry recorded four birdies to balance out a pair of bogeys to finish four under for the tournament. Then the waiting game happened as Fry entered the clubhouse as the leader in the early afternoon. Both Longwood and Radford's players shot two-over par on the back-nine to give Fry the win. The senior shot eight-under on Par 5's and finished the tournament with 18 total birdies.
Max Dupree (Eatonton, Ga.) shot even par on the day to finish tied for ninth overall in the tournament. Sam Merrell (Greer, S.C.) shot three-over par for the day and finished tied for 37th overall. Dupree led the team with 34 pars in the tournament.
Parker Lewis (Inman, S.C.) shot a 74 in the final round and improved by five strokes from his second round score. Lewis finished 44th overall in the tournament, Zander Briggs (Simpsonville, S.C.) recorded a 77 in the final round and finished 45th in the event.
Fry will began preparing for the NCAA Regionals and the rest of the team will began preparing for the Fall 2021 season.
