Jim Hinse at Hannaford

Jim Hinse culls produce to be donated using the supermarket’s food waste diversion program during an Earth Day event at the store on Bicentennial Drive in Manchester.

Hannaford store manager Carl Provencher opened a green bin inside the supermarket’s produce prep room Wednesday filled with nearly 250 pounds of food waste — green peppers, onion shells, Swiss chard, potatoes.

None of it will end up in landfills. Instead the waste will be converted into renewable energy.
