Perfect In Every Way (Manors and Mysteries Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars (1,109)

Historical fiction writer, Vivienne Dupree, is hoping to unravel the mystery of her WWII soldier, great-grandfather’s doomed love affair with the lovely Lady Harmony. A woman he met convalescing at the sweeping English country estate, The Downs.

Vivienne jumps at the invitation to spend time at this magnificent property, doing so with unfettered access to family papers.

What she doesn’t expect is to come face-to-face—and immediately go head-to-head—with Battle Talyn, the ludicrously handsome, imposing, ridiculously arrogant Duke of Burleigh.

From the start, Vivi and Battle match wits, but it doesn’t take long for Vivi to realize something is amiss at The Downs. She dives into her research to figure it out, at the same time Battle launches a campaign that Vivi doesn’t quite understand.

The game is on, and a mystery is afoot.

What kept the doomed lovers apart all those years ago? What’s happening in the ballroom? Is there a curse on The Downs?

And what does all of this have to do with Battle and Vivi?

Y'all sometimes the only happy you need is a new Kristen Ashley release. This latest installment in the Manors and Mysteries series—yes, you heard me, English manors and a compelling mystery!—was no exception. Vivienne Dupree is an author on a mission: she's come to England to write her next novel. It's based loosely on the enduring mystery of her WWII veteran great-grandfather and his doomed love affair with a British member of the upper class, and Vivi's received exclusive access to the manor house where it all happened. One of the manor's current residents is Vivi's pen-pal, Prudence (Prue) Talyn, who struck up a friendship with Vivi as they collaborated on the material and research for Vivi's writing project. Vivi's excited to spend time with her friend, meet Prue's family, and get to the bottom of her mystery. But something stands in the way of her success: Battle Talyn, the Duke of Burleigh. Battle doesn't want his family's secrets dragged through the public eye in the form of a lurid romance novel. But he hasn't encountered Vivi's American stubborn will. As the two "battle" their moral lines, they discover a dangerous chemistry that compels them both. Add in some classic KA shenanigans such as some family antics, some dramatic friends, and a love story that spans every page (and decade).... Yeah. This was a good time. Perfect in Every Way was just like its title. It hit the spot, and it was that—near-perfect in every way. (I say "near" perfect because... I must admit... I love a drama. I love a romantic angst. And Battle and Vivi?? They were a little too wholesome and emotionally stable for me. Yes, I know that reflects poorly on me. Oops.) Battle and Vivi's love affair was the core of this story. Their heart, sense of family, and immediate chemistry worked for me on many levels. I enjoyed seeing them dance together and find their happily ever after. Ugh, nobody writes an HEA like Kristen Ashley. Don't miss this one! It's a great entry point into the KA universe and a great standalone story.

Perfect In Every Way by Kristen Ashley was such a delight for my soul, my imagination, my escape from reality! It absolutely fulfilled the bill of being a mystery, and being set in a manor, as the series suggests it will be. It was a delicious standalone, and these characters had me hooked from the get go!

The whole Talyn family is next level, each strong individuals that have overcome a heck of a lot, loud strength, quiet strength, forces to be reckoned with, and the best kind of people to have on your side. They love hard, they support wholeheartedly, and they deserve every sliver of happiness that comes their way throughout this story!

Battle, oh, what a man! Strength in character and body, driven, hidden and visible depths, strong for his family, and he absolutely knows what he wants and has no qualms going after it and making it happen. And trading quips with the woman who upsets his world, well, that's icing on the cake!

Vivi, such a beautiful character, inside and out! Feisty, fierce, loving, giving, empathetic, a force of nature, and strong in her ideals, her principles, and her strength as she gives it in friendship, and in love. And the banter with the duke, well, that's the cherry on top of the sundae!

This story has intrigue, light drama and angst, mystery, amazing imagery, beautiful friendships, the strength of sisterhood, the beauty of brotherly love, and all types of devotion, including those that span time. It is evocative, it is descriptive, it is the perfect escape. I would wish everyone finds a love like all of these characters find, and the strength of friendships that support that!

This story will live rent free in my head for quite a while! Don't mind me, just reliving the banter, the chemistry, and the amazing characterization!

This is such a lovely story! Perfect In Every Way is the second book in the Manors and Mysteries series by Kristen Ashley.

Battle is the perfect hero who deeply cares for those he loves. He is smart and kind and had me falling in love with him from the very beginning of the book. Battle is the best big brother who is fiercely protective of his three younger, beautiful sisters. Their parents weren’t the best, so Battle basically raised those girls. They share a strong sibling bond that not only holds love but also adoration for one another.

Vivienne is such a wonderful heroine. She brings life to The Downs and quickly falls in love with the three sisters as well as the gorgeous Battle. Not only does she have a backbone but Vivienne has no problem voicing her opinions and fighting for those who need it. She’s bright and loves living and experiencing new things.

Prudence, Temperance and Chasity are Battle’s three sisters. They have completely different personalities and are all lost and struggling in some way. During this story, we get to watch each of them grow and bloom into the women they are meant to be. I loved them as much as I loved Battle and Vivienne.

The storyline regarding the history at The Downs with Vivienne’s great-grandfather and his first love Lady Harmony added to the love story we had a front seat in witnessing between Vivi and Battle.

KA is and remains my favorite author. I can always count on her books to suck me in, make me feel as though I am in the same room as the characters and leave me feeling happy and content with the ending. Hers are the books I reread and the stories I love the most.

An English country estate, a titled hero, a smart heroine, and a mystery waiting to be solved, just a few things I love about this story. Also, I love that all the Talyn siblings are in their own way very protective of each other. The romance between Battle and Vivi was passionate and sweet. The story wrapped up nicely with no eleventh hour misunderstanding between the MC, which I appreciated very much.

As always a pleasure to read Kristen Ashley. This series is very enjoyable to me, I’m not a Bridgerton era fan, but I love stories about the modern aristocracy and their way of life.

The characters are so interesting, filled with personality and you can’t help but love the them all, along with all the pets in the household. The fun banter between Battie and Vivi, is so much fun. This quote seemed to sum it up for me.

“I told my sister I felt comfortable here, in this beautiful jewel of a massive house, which could and maybe should be formidable, but it isn’t. Because it’s so full of love. You four built that. And I’m so honored I was even invited to walk through the front doors to experience it.” “Oh, Vivi,” Prue said and gave me a hug. I hugged her back. “

Kristen Ashley’s sweeping, atmospheric romance, Perfect in Every Way, was a sizzling contemporary love story intertwined with a haunting historical mystery. Vivienne, a thoughtful historical fiction author, traveled to the majestic British countryside estate of her friend, Prue Talyn, to research her great-grandfather’s WWII romance with Prue’s great-aunt. Prue’s alpha older brother, Battle, the audaciously arrogant and devastatingly handsome Duke of Burleigh, was on Vivi’s case from the moment she arrives.

Ashley expertly used the forced proximity of the sprawling ancestral home to amplify the intense chemistry and razor-sharp wit that crackled between Vivi and Battle, which made their modern-day antagonism the perfect echo of the doomed lovers from the past. As they reluctantly worked together to uncover long-buried secrets, the slow-burn build-up of both their romance and the mystery created a rich, layered narrative that kept me tapping my Kindle furiously. Ashley delivered a captivating tale where the past and present collide and commanding heroes and resilient heroines are caught up in grand romances and a suspenseful plot. Kristen Ashley’s Perfect in Every Way gets five smooches from me!

Light mystery with some serious romance. This ticked all the boxes for me, i loved it.

Vivi is an American author looking to research her latest historical fiction novel. She has been corresponding with Lady Prue of The Downs, one of the 3 sisters of the current Duke. All 4 siblings live in the large stately home and she has been invited to stay for 2 weeks to go through letters and diaries from the 1940s. Her great grandfather fell in love with the daughter of the house while convalescing during the war. She has the letters written to him and was hoping to find out why they never married.

She doesn’t expect to be instantly floored by the reclusive siblings. Battle, the Duke, lives up to his name and is overwhelming, protective and infuriatingly handsome. His sisters range from timid to calculating but Vivi’s natural kindness, charm and strength endear her to them.

There are 2 main themes running through the book. The mystery of their ancestors letters and the mystery of the sisters in the present. Each is engaging and interesting and the story moves at a good pace with plenty of revelations throughout.

I knew at the 50% mark that it was going to be a book that I’d immediately start re-reading again once I’d finished. I enjoyed spending time with the characters and I love the slightly supernatural lean of the mystery element.

This book is everything I’ve come to love and expect from Kristen Ashley. Her characters always feel real, layered, and completely absorbing. The kind you become emotionally invested in before you even realise it’s happened.
Also, as an Aussie, I have to say that the reference to one of the characters being sent to Sydney absolutely tickled me. I’m not sure whether it was intentional, but given Australia’s history as a British penal colony, the implication was hilariously clever. Whether it was deliberate or not, I appreciated the moment immensely as it gave me a good giggle.
